We stopped into Los Dos Molinos while back in Phoenix, and after our 20-year absence, it was a complete joy to see that Los Dos is still serving up the hottest son-of-a-gun food in all of Arizona. The place continues to have that easygoing "just doing it our way" vibe you know and love it for, and it remains our favorite New Mexican chile-it-up restaurant on the planet. Clearly a lot of people feel that way, since even at an off hour in the middle of a summer afternoon, you'll find locals in there savoring the F&B. If the delicious dishes start to singe your tastebuds, don't forget to order a pitcher of the heartiest margaritas in town (or at least a flavored iced tea). Los Dos is the best of the best!

Have I really never written a review for Los Dos after 20 some years of going here anytime I am in Phoenix?! For history's sake I will give them 4 stars but today was more like 3. Went for Saturday brunch for the first time. No wait. Sat right down. Service was slow and food was slow to arrive. Fortunately drinks came quick. The servers have never been super friendly here and years of being popular have certainly made the restaurant comfortable in doing things their way and customers be damned. If you love the food you just learn to roll with it. And really the food is the deal. Intense, uncompromising New Mexican food that will set your hair on fire. Some like it hot indeed. In the old days you'd be guaranteed a wait and planned to just have a pitcher of margs and chips in the meantime. Now you can sit at your table and do the same wait after you order.

DONT RECOMMEND! I brought my kids and boyfriend to eat here after a long day. We waited forever for service and there was only 1 other table with people. Then we get our food. The steak was burnt. We kindly advised it was too hard to eat. They took it away and brought it back and said " that's how we make it" and gave it back. We ordered a tamale. It was so dry I am had to drink water to get it down my throat. Very disappointed. Still gad to buy McDonald's for my kids on the way home. It's a shame when McDonald's is better than a a Mexican food restaurant. DONT RECOMMEND!

Its live and gets good!

Okay first of all let me tell you about the good style.... If you like spicy and flavorful sauces like enchiladas, carne con chile or burritos or something eith a saucy sauce, this place is the place you want to go too. The food has an authentic new Mexico tatste and the service is exceptional! Just to give you an example Erik gave us great recommendations, took time to explain spicy levels and also the difference between your regular style Mexican food vs this new Mexico style food Overall, the food was delicious, the music was great and the service was exceptional! Come vist them... I know i am!

There are many worse injustices in the world, but chief among the lessor wrongs I'm aware of is that at the time of this writing, the original Los Dos Molinas is rated only 3.5 on Yelp. This is an insult to the integrity of Yelp's rating system. In the reviews there are complaints that the food is too spicy (yes, in fact it's very very spicy, so beware), the service can be slow sometimes (they are very popular and very busy - but my service has never been slow), the food is tasteless (are you kidding?? It's easily some of the most flavorful food I've ever eaten), and the décor is cheesy (yes it is.) If spicy food and cheesy décor is not your thing, then don't go. If you can deal with that, then visit Los Dos Molinas and you'll be in for a treat possibly unlike anything you've ever tasted. This location is basically a national landmark, located in the former ranch home of Tom Mix. If you don't know Tom Mix, he was a silent movie star - basically he was John Wayne before John Wayne was John Wayne. There is an outdoor courtyard where you can sit and drink while waiting for a table in the smallish dining room. The dining room is somewhat dark and full of kitschy décor, but this doesn't impact the quality of the food. I highly recommend beginning your meal with a bowl of green chile stew and a savory sopapilla - wow, so good. I've eaten at this restaurant on regular visits to Phoenix over the past 30 years (my first Yelp picture of Los Dos Molinas is dated 2013) and it's consistently been delicious whether I've had the enchiladas, the pork roast, or anything else on the menu. Everything they serve is spicy, but pay special attention to the chile symbols on the menu as they designate the items that are EXTRA spicy. As the chef says right on the menu, he doesn't know how to make mild. Los Dos Molinas is my favorite Mexican / New Mexican restaurant - I lived in Houston / San Antonio for 10 years and Oklahoma for 7, so I have a pretty good idea what Mexican food is supposed to taste like. If you can handle spicy food, I'm confident you'll like it too.

The house Margaritas taste even better at Happy Hour. Seconds!

Every time I visit friends in Phoenix, we wind up at Los Dos Molinos. It's a great gathering place, fun to watch people and oh so good when it comes to food and drink. It serves hot and spicy New Mexico style cuisine. I finally found out the story on the restaurant's name. The founders had two chile grinders, and that's what the name means, The Two Grinders. Many of the entrée's feature a chile next to them. That means it's "Hot". They don't provide mild sauce and they are proud to say they do not know how make "Mild". Beyond the delicious house Margaritas, the carafe of ice water was helpful throughout this meal. We arrived early for dinner on a Friday night and beat the rush that shows up a few hours later. We were seated in the outdoor patio, which with perfect February weather, was a great dining experience. The inside dining area is often described as homey with lots of spectacular artwork and sculptures. Every dish is prepared special and they make a point of telling you this isn't an assembly line/microwave restaurant. The menu offers entrees low in fat and gluten-free. The house specialty is slow-cooked, red chili-marinated Carne Adovada served over fresh tortillas. It was a standout for our meal. The Green Enchiladas, Roast Tacos Dinners and Roast Burrito Dinner was equally as good. Los Dos Molinos never disappoints!

Los Dos Molinos Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Los Dos Molinos

When is Los Dos Molinos coming to Orange County in Southern California?

Sometime between now and never.

What is this place at Mortuary back in the day?

Yes it was a mortuary [Botimers] at least until the 80's or early 90's, until there was a fire. [My grandparents were prepared for burial there] After the fire, they moved their business across the street into an old Circle K, then they eventually… Read more

Probably not going back to Dick's…read more.. We were visiting both Phoenix and Scottsdale with friends and decided to meet up at Dick's Hideaway for dinner after hearing good things. There were six of us, and we were quoted a 45-minute wait, which seemed reasonable at first. However, their system for managing waits is honestly pretty frustrating. There are no reservations, no text notifications, and no call when your table is ready. You're basically left hovering and guessing. We did make it back in time for our table, but a simple "hey, your table's ready" system would go a long way in making guests feel valued. We were seated around 8 PM after waiting and taken to a large corner booth in the back. Unfortunately, there were still two people from the previous party lingering at the table even after they had paid and the rest of their group had already left. I understand finishing drinks, but it felt inconsiderate given how busy the restaurant was and how long people were waiting. After being seated, it took about 15 minutes before anyone came to our table, and even then, not everyone in our group was acknowledged right away. Things didn't improve much from there. It took over 30 minutes just to place our food order. From what we could tell, there was only one server handling the entire restaurant. I can definitely empathize with how difficult that must be, but at the same time, when we first arrived, she appeared to be standing near the entrance rather than actively managing tables, which added to the confusion. When the food finally came out, it was very staggered instead of arriving together. I ordered the Taos tenderloin with green beans and fries. The sides were actually great--probably the highlight of the meal--but the steak itself was disappointing. I ordered it medium, but it came out with an overly charred, almost burnt crust that completely overpowered the flavor. The whole dish really needed basic seasoning like salt and pepper to bring it together. The atmosphere also didn't do much to help the experience. It's extremely dark inside--so much so that it's hard to see your food--and the space feels cramped. The layout is also pretty strange and honestly a bit off-putting. There's what appears to be a kitchen area right behind the bar, and then a full kitchen in the back--but what really stood out was the lack of separation near the restroom area. There's no proper door between the kitchen and the bathroom space, and from a small step down off the dining area, you can basically see straight into the kitchen if you wanted to. It just didn't feel very private or well thought out. Another thing that stood out was the portion sizes. While some people might see that as a positive, they were honestly too large--especially for those of us traveling who couldn't take leftovers with us. Slightly smaller portions might not only reduce waste but also help the kitchen keep up with demand and improve overall service speed. Overall, this ended up being more of a one-time experience than a place we'd return to. Between the disorganized wait system, slow and inconsistent service, and underwhelming food, it just didn't live up to the expectations we had going in.

The restaurant was about half-full and bustling brightly indoors and on the deep shaded wrap-around patio. Our server, Branden, was one of the best servers we've ever had! Attentive and polite, even reading off the entire menu and describing highlights to hubs, who'd never been before. We were seated immediately at a booth table and brought complimentary chips and salsa. These are good fresh, thin chips and smoky mild-hot tasty salsa. Branden brought us a second round of chips and salsa as well. We ordered: - Coca-Cola fountain drink - Coke Zero fountain drink - SHORT RIB MACHACA ENCHILADAS 5/5 - Highly recommend - caramelized peppers & onions, yellow cheese, ancho chile sauce, cilantro. Served with sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, rice, & choice of beans. Classic enchilada sauce like how I remember, delicious tender shredded marinated short rib inside. - CARNE ASADA FAJITAS 4/5 (sweet soy salsa verde) served with blistered peppers, charred onions, jack cheese, guacamole, salsa fresca, sour cream, choice of beans & tortillas. Hubs said these were good. He did want rice with his meal so he ended up taking my rice which I didn't want. As you can see in the pics, the tortillas are scratch made in-house as well as the sauces and sides. Bar seating, booth and table, and patio seating available. Men's and women's restroom available for customers.
