Los Compadres was my first food truck experience, and sadly, it didn't measure up to the hype.
On a cold and windy day, after braving the weather to cross the parking lot where the food trucks had congregated by my work, I was hoping for some authentic Mexican fare to warm me from top to toes... what I got instead was a mouthful of sad.
I ordered the Choritacos (an order of 3 chorizo and cheese tacos) as well as the Churro compadres (churro filled with chocolate) and eagerly anticipated a fantastic lunch. How could it not be - the combination of authentic tortillas, chorizo and cheese is delicious! Chocolate filled churro? Amazing!
After waiting in the biting wind for what seemed to be an almost ridiculous amount of time, I finally got my order and scurried back to my office with my goodies tucked into my jacket to keep everything warm.
I traded 1 of my Choritacos to a friend who ordered the Bisteck (3 top sirloin tacos). The Bisteck wasn't bad - the seasoning was good, the tortilla was great, the meat was a little chewy and dry, which was surprising considering the cut.
Sadly, the Choritacos disappointed. While the tortilla was delicious, the meat was terrible. It was so heavily salted and over-seasoned, I could barely finish half of one. There was very little cheese on it, and the meat was dry and disgusting.
The churro did little to stave off my disappointment. I was expecting a long, hot, crispy tube of fried goodness, covered in cinnamon sugar and filled with creamy chocolate. Instead, I received a tiny, cold, chewy stick and a plastic portion cup filled with glutenous chocolate pudding in which to dip the churro. Waitasecond. Dip? I thought the menu said filled with chocolate, not "dip this in chocolate."
Los Compadres received 2 stars for it's authenticity - the flavours are there, and the tortillas are delicious. Unfortunately, the portion sizes were "petite" for what you paid, it took an inordinate amount of time to get my order, and the tacos were so salty, I could have cried (I didn't though, for fear of even more salt).
I'm really hoping that my experience was a one-off, and that the food is actually much better. I'm a huge proponent of small business and creative dining, so hopefully, mine was a unique experience. Unique or not, though, I highly doubt I'll be hunting Los Compadres again any time soon. read more
