Really hate to do this to my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city but here we go: First off, the food is excellent. Everything always taste fresh and well seasoned, the drinks are potent, and green salsa is spicy and delicious. I've tried many Mexican restaurants that are closer to my house, but always end up back at this one for the quality of food in spite of the commute. On this day, I came in on my off day (not wearing my usual work attire. I mention this because i feel it's relevant) I sat at the bar and waited about 5 minutes in order to order a drink. Drink comes promptly and she whisks away before i can place an order for food. So i wait. And wait. About 15 minutes later I finally have to flag someone down to tell them I'm ready to order. Meanwhile the person next to me at the bar is receiving his food. Hmm ok. My food comes hot and delicious as always so I put the less than prompt service out of my head. As I'm enjoying my food, the staff literally begins to stack and fill salsa containers... right in front of me. Literally over my food. It was super rude and I was overall extremely disappointed in this experience. This coupled with the slow and unconcerned service left me less than pleased with the overall experience that i truly believe was related to my appearance. Not sure if I can return after this. D*mn shame. I'm gonna miss those street tacos read more

Been here so many times!! Their employees are great, friendly & welcoming! The seating is pretty open, we always go for a booth. The food is soooooo good!!! I switched it up this time, T-bone Steak with Shrimp, onions & peppers. Only $15.50 for all this food!! You definitely cannot beat that!! I've never had better Mexican food than at Los Comales! My husband got the carne asada chimichanga (the guacamole was fresh and so flavorful) and I got the shrimp, chicken and steak enchiladas (I forgot the name of the meal). The food had so much flavor and all of it seemed made to order! The margaritas were fresh and delicious! The ambiance was welcome and the service was great! The only complaint I have is that it's not in St.Louis! read more

Food was good , service could have been better, Waitress was nice and friendly. She had a big smile. She was very patient even though we did have a big group of about 10 people on the other hand, my wife she got a margarita and she found a bottle cap in it and I don't understand why, but the manager came out and she replaced her drink with another drink , I would assume that you probably would've gave me the drink for free or gave her a free meal, but there was no discount given. I'm not saying I won't come back. It's just that I'll be cautious next time. The ambiance was beyond noisy. It was extremely loud, I think, due to the openness of the restaurant itself and tall ceilings. read more

Grrat food great drinks and the service is awesome. I will say some nights are busy but it's not a long wait everything is worth it . I normally get nachos with margaritas or chicken tacos always it's so good here. I even take my friends here when they come in town and they always request to go back when visiting read more

My favorite Mexican restaurant in Memphis!!!! Great service, good portions, great prices, and delicious every. single. time. From the last three years I've been in Memphis, Los Comales has always been a go-to. They bring out a salsa with chips, and a green sauce that has the best spicy kick to it! I've tried the chicken fajitas, chorizo fundido, chicken flautas, and pollo y camaron blanco. All were amazing! The tacos come with these spicy peppers. Hola Amigos...and Amigas...mucho important review...this place rocks...Astrid (waitstaff) was delightful...she was prompt, smiling and attentive...i ordered the lunch portion carne fajitas (served until 3)...with corn tortillas beans and rice...yummm....yumm...yum. A nice portioned but more importantly delicious meal that i thoroughly enjoyed...to the last drop...Always accompanied by warm chips and red and green salsa...along with the largest glass of Coke products ( largest meaning size of the drinks...lol)... this authentic Mexican cantina is great! Visited this little gem on the recommendation of a friend, since then I've been back for birthday's and have even brought out of town guest to enjoy this amazing food. First off even though the outside of the building is nothing fancy the vibe and coziness of the inside more than makes up for it. Also this place is just right off Overton Square!, so enjoy some good eats and then hit up Overton Square and catch some fabulous live music. I always order a dish and I'm not sure what the name of it is but its basically thin country fried chicken with tortillas refried bean and rice and taste out of this world delicious and the portions will leave you stuffed and not wanting to drive home, lol. So if you want to enjoy some real authentic Mexican fare done right and a party vibe to go along with it, visit this place on your next outing to midtown. read more

I have ate dinner here twice, and the tacos are AMAZING. I got Taco de Asada (grilled steak) during my first visit about a month ago. Though, the steak could have been juicer, I still give this place 5 stars because lime juice solved the dryness. The steak was full of flavor none the less. Tonight, I ordered two Taco De Asada and two Taco de Chorizo. The Taco de Chorizo won my heart over. So much flavor!! Next time I will opt for only Chorizo. The steak was cooked better this go around, I just really favor chorizo. This restaurant is beautiful. A huge plus, it smells clean and IS CLEAN. We were greeted with a smile and seated quickly. You better go check this place out if you love Mexican food! I most recently dropped in on Taco Tuesday and it did not disappoint. I think the carnitas tacos are the best but I've yet to have anything bad! Also highly recommend the shrimp ceviche tostada, so good! Will be going back again and again! read more

Okay this place is amazing. The food is delicious and affordable. I usually get the pastor burrito which comes with rice and beans. Along with the unlimited chips and salsa, you are guaranteed to leave a bit chubbier and a while lot satisfied. Their pastor is well seasoned; I definitely recommend trying the pastor! The restaurant tends to be pretty loud and can get busy around dinner time, but the wait is never too long. Definitely check this place out! read more

The queso is sooo delicious!!! I am also a huge fan of their steak fajitas due to the large portion size and all of the sides that come with it (guac, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, rice, beans - no extra charge). I do have to say that when I've dined in, it's been somewhat slow service which reduces my rating to 4 stars (I've felt frustrated once or twice). However, I primarily do take-out and have 0 issues there! read more

Easy parking, visited after Fedex Forum event. Place was clean, staff was friendly. We were waited on right away. Two adults, three kids, everyone ordered an entree and a soft drink, total bill was $60. That's a really good deal for this family! I had the Parrillada (fajita mix, not sure of the spelling). Had chorizo, shrimp, chicken, steak, etc. meat was prepared well, I enjoyed it, but probably will order steak and chicken next time, it was just a little heavy for me. After moving to Memphis from Arizona (lived in AZ for 28 years) I was craving some mexican food and had been mostly disappointed with my findings so far. Enter los comales into the mix: solid ass mexican food, cheap beer and good margs just like at home. They have some of my favorite carne asada that I've ever had - ever. I've tried carne from little street carts in Mexico to fine Mexico City dining and this carne is that legit. Service is always on point, the wait staff is always professional and quick to assist. We have always been sat promptly and never feel like we are uncomfortable at a table there. We have tried the enchiladas, chimichangas, fajitas, gorditas, and more. If you want to order it, it's likely going to be really, really good. I'm so stoked to have found los comales, and I'm excited it's so close to my place! read more

Ok! Ok! I've been here 3 times. I'm just gonna tell you. It's legit. For real. Good stuff. We ain't talking about Taco Bell. We talking about you spent money and flew to Mexico good. I am a believer. I can only do 3 stars.. I came here because of their high reviews. Unfortunately we must have come on a rough night. -1 star due to cleanliness.. Wipe your tables down. We were not the only people to sit down and literally look at the table in disgust because they sat us at dirty tables. -1 star for our waitress who solely focused on certain tables. We had to wave her down, ask for multiple things that should have been server etiquette and she checked on us once while we had our food. Can't say I will recommend or come back to this establishment. read more

I was looking for some yummies on a late Sunday night and stumbled across this place. The food was really good but the service was horrible. I felt like I was inconveniencing the server. She wasn't personable, didn't check on me after my food was served and just gave off some really unapproachable vibes. I also never received my side salad instead of rice and beans. Now I don't know if this was going on because I was there after 8pm and the staff was cleaning up for the night, but as soon as I walked in, there was a a very strong smell of chemicals. Like so strong it burned the inside of my nose and gave me a headache. Smelling that while eating was gross. Also, a lot of the staff were hanging out at the bar on their cell phones. So I was excited to come try something else. On the plus side, the bathroom was so nicely decorated. It was also very clean. I sat at the end of the bar, beside the little section of books. The bartender was nice. I ordered the Ember&Passion cocktail. Although it was pretty good, it was quite mild. Unexpected with the ingredients in it. I was surprised that the level of expected heat was not very detectable. I give it 7/10. When I came here before in the winter, the temperature was perfect and I don't remember being too bothered that they don't have cocktail napkins. But yesterday it was quite warm in the restaurant and not having these napkins wasn't good. Nobody in the restaurant had any type of napkin under any drink! I noticed that just like mine, every glass of water from every patron had a puddle of condensation under the glass. Each time I picked up my glass of water, it would drip onto my food and clothes. My two menus got so wet. I suppose they made this decision to save themselves a lot of money. As for the food: My parmesan truffle fries were excellent!! Hot, crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked in the middle. Best I've had in a long time. The Alabama white sauce on the side was just your typical sauce. It tasted just like every other Alabama white sauce that I've had so was not disappointing. But I actually ended up not using it because it was too thin and it didn't add anything to the fries. The fries were excellent enough on their own. I ordered my burger "pink" but there wasn't any pink to it, but I wasn't that bothered about it. Burger and the toppings were tasty, except for the fried green tomato. Looking closely at the picture, you can see that it was SO SMALL compared to the size of the burger. When a restaurant does that, don't they realize that it makes for a glaring disappointment?! It apparently came from near the end of the tomato, and not the middle. If you are going to offer a fried green tomato on a burger, then I feel as if you should only use the larger slices of the tomato, and save the smaller ends for maybe putting in salads. I've always been obsessed with fried green tomatoes. After having my first two bites of burger and still not reaching the tomato, I took it off to eat by itself. Sadly, it tasted terrible! I was surprised. Obviously, they didn't season the tomato or the batter. (Salt and pepper go a long way.) The burger toppings apparently made the tomato batter not only soggy, but also this strange thick texture. Like mushy and chewy at the same time. 1/10 Worst problem: FLIES!!! So many flies! When I just had my drink but no food yet, I noticed them but was not bombarded by them at that point. It wasn't until my food came. All of a sudden I was literally surrounded by them. They were everywhere! No exaggeration. I actually had to use only one hand to eat and the other hand to constantly move back and forth over my food. I eventually gave up and set the plate of some of my fries about 4 inches in front of my burger in order to hopefully draw the flies to the fries so that I could eat my burger. Unfortunately, after only four bites of my burger, when I set it down to take a drink of water, a fly landed on it within one second. Obviously, that was my last bite, and even when I was moving the plate closer to the end of the counter, two more flies landed on it. The glass of straws was inches from me. That, and the book closest to me seemed to be where they gathered to wait for their opportunity to dive bomb me. So many of them! It turned my stomach when I realized that I had been drinking from a straw with my water and I'm sure there had been flies on it before I got there. Every person that gets a straw in their drink at this restaurant has had a fly sitting on top of it. Had I known the fly situation was that bad when I first got my drink, I would have never stayed there, and I certainly would have never ordered food. I do think it is a real shame because the winter months are a totally different experience in that restaurant. But because of how horrible it was this time, I just can't ever come back.

As my friend was still excited about the menu and to taste some of the pairings, we decided to wait. At 7:59 (like clockwork), the notice of our table being ready was sent. The hostess seated us and again, I wasn't optimistic of what would occur during the visit. The server that greeted us was GREAT!!! We ordered SEVERAL appetizers and drinks and all were AMAZING - (the grilled avocado with the shrimp was worth the trip alone). For dinner we ordered Peking Duck and Ribeye Steak Salads (and more drinks). Both were amazing. And while the desserts looked divine, there was absolutely no room. We were impressed with the old Beauty Shop decor - it really was a conversation piece. It's small and quaint and we had a lovely chat with the patrons alongside us. The food and service EXCELLENT! Let me start by saying this: I truly enjoy this restaurant. The atmosphere is unique, the concept is fun, and historically the food and service have been reliable. That's exactly why this experience stood out so much. For a party of our size, we would have preferred seating toward the back of the restaurant where it was noticeably warmer and more comfortable. Instead, we were seated in an area that felt a bit chilly, which set the tone for the evening. The bigger issue, however, was with the food and service execution. Four dishes out of our party of twelve were essentially untouched. Two scallop entrées and the Steak Frites were overcooked, tough, and unfortunately inedible. The special ribeye of the night--the most expensive entrée--was also not finished. What concerned me most was that no one from the service team paused to read the table or ask why multiple plates remained full. Only one dish was removed, and there was no follow-up conversation about the others. We spent over $800 that evening, including drinks, appetizers, sides, and desserts, so expectations for attentiveness and quality were understandably higher. When a table leaves several entrées uneaten, that's usually a signal worth acknowledging. After the visit, on January 9, 2025, I took the time to provide feedback privately through OpenTable in the hope that management would review it and respond. Unfortunately, I never received any acknowledgment. Even a brief reply would have gone a long way. Silence, in this case, was disappointing and felt like a missed opportunity to demonstrate care and accountability. I'm sharing this feedback because I believe in the restaurant and want to see it succeed. I work in a customer-facing industry myself, and I know firsthand how small service touches--checking in, asking questions, and following up--can make the difference between a good experience and one that keeps guests coming back. I genuinely hope this was just an off night. I would still consider returning, but I do hope the level of attentiveness and follow-through improves.
