Disappointed Doesn't Even Begin to Cover It We've been to other locations of this Mexican restaurant before and always enjoyed our go-to dishes--so we expected the same quality here. Sadly, this was hands-down the worst experience we've had at any of their spots. We ordered the Steak Mexicano, Steak & Shrimp, Shrimp Cocktail, and two margaritas. The drinks were the only highlight--strong, flavorful, and honestly the only reason this review gets a single star. The food, however, was a disaster. Let's start with the steaks. Both were bland and flavorless, with the Steak Mexicano tasting like it had been reheated on the grill--dry and chewy. The other steak was full of fatty pieces, nearly a quarter of it was inedible. Tortillas were forgotten, and when they finally arrived, the meal was nearly over. The rice and beans were passable, but that's not exactly high praise. The worst part? The shrimp cocktail. We were looking forward to sharing it, but the first shrimp we tasted was so questionable we had to send it back. It genuinely tasted off--not fresh at all--and even the orange slices on the side looked like they had been sitting out all day, maybe for display. We should've known better than to order seafood here, but we didn't expect it to be outright spoiled. When we brought up the issues while paying, the lady at the register dismissively said, "not my problem." She later backtracked and claimed she had said "no problem," but by then the damage was done. She could've at least apologized, since we are paying for food that we hardly ate. (We didn't get charged for the shrimp cocktail). Honestly, if you don't know what good Mexican food should taste like, you might be fooled by the endless stale chips and a good margarita. But don't be deceived--this location is a far cry from the others. If you're craving the better deal, you're better off going to the one in 5036 S Westnedge Ave, Portage or Kalamazoo. I stopped here for lunch. It wasn't very busy. Was seated quickly. I ordered steak fajitas. The food came out relatively quickly. The taste was average. It tasted like it was cooked in old oil. The waitress was friendly. But dropped my food off and never checked on me again. I didn't see her until she brought the bill. Definitely a Mexican feel, right down to the Mexican rodeo event Charreada playing on the TV. Which many in the United States believe it is animal abuse. I realize this is a Mexican restaurant. This time, the food was OK. The service was subpar. We were there early enough so there was no crowd. The big problem with the service was when it came time to pay our separate checks. The server got EVERYTHING mixed up. One member of our party received more in change than he gave the server. Another member received more back than she should have. Me? I got "stiffed," paying more than I should have as I received NO CHANGE. The other members of the party got theirs straightened out. I gave up! Bottom line, use a credit card, not cash. They're about a three. They were marginal for me. Nothing exceptional but nothing not so good either. I did like the picante salsa. The tamale and the chorizo taco were okay. Veggie fajitas were okay if but a bit too greasy. There were plenty of accompaniments and I did like the pico. Hospitality wasn't without spots of awkwardness or carelessness but adequate. I am so disappointed in our latest experience here that I may never go back. It all starts with an unfriendly greeter/host that simply takes us to our table, drops the menus and leaves without so much as a smile or "your wait person will be right with you". Then the waiter who could have cared less if we were there comes and asks for our drink order. When we order water he simply walks away but we did manage to squeak out a basket of chips and salsa. Our orders were simple and were without issue, except for a piece of black something in my chile, which the waiter couldn't figure out either but assured me that it was nothing to worry about. I was done with the meal at that point but not so much as an apology or a "can I get you something else". The table across from us was a bunch of drunks who used so much filthy language that it would make a sailor blush. So glad when we said something to the manager that he just shrugged it off and super glad that our kids weren't present or my demeanor would have been a bit more assertive. I've been coming here for a year now and for two months came every Tuesday. My boyfriend and I love coming here for taco Tuesday. We always get the Mexican style tacos with everything (cilantro, onions). The tacos we get are the al pastor, chorizo, and grilled chicken! Amazing taste, authentic, and friendly staff. An evening out with my mom and she chose Los Amigos. It has been a few years since I was last here. We arrived fairly early before the dinner crowd. We were seated promptly and the chips & salsa were immediately brought out. After reading the menu we decided what we were going to order. We were seated in what was like a private room and I had to flag down the waiter. Not sure if he forgot about us since we were the only ones in that room. I had the tamales and they were very good and very filling. Mom really liked her burrito. Our one complaint was the room was very cold when the ceiling fans were running, even the napkins were fluttering. Great chicken chimichanga but service needs some work. Waiters are hard to catch if you need anything. If you are used to tomatoes on your tacos, order them with your taco--again catching a waiter after is difficult. Bathrooms need a plumber! Hubby almost got toilet up spray when he flushed! The carne asada tacos were below average at best, the guac tasted like the single-serving packaged kind from Costco, and I'm not even sure the steak queso fundido had any Monterey Jack or chihuahua cheese in it; it tasted like cheap nacho cheese. I would have gotten chorizo on it but they ran out so I got the steak. I doubt it would've made a difference considering how bad the "queso" tasted. The flour tortillas that came with it were soggy, which leads me to believe they were previously frozen and microwaved. This is usually our go-to for Mexican food. Service is usually fast and friendly. After last night's experience, we will not be returning. We arrived around 5:45. To be honest, I've never been there when it was so busy. Never thought we would have an issue getting in. In front of us were one group and one couple. behind us were a group of 8 and a couple. Then, three more couples walked in. The manager asked each of us how many were in our parties. The three couples who walked in each said six. The group in front of us was seated. The group of eight behind us was seated next. The couple in front of us was seated.Then he took the the groups of six, even though the rest of their parties were not there. By then. we and the couple behind us were angry. We said something to the manager, who told us that he couldn't sit two people at a six-top. I told him he can seat his six people, but he might lose us forever. He argued and argued. I told him that most restaurants, where reservations are not available, it's first come, first serve. He argued with me again. We were seated, but I was mad at that point, and didn't feel like eating. I ordered a lemonade, and my boyfriend ordered a meal, not realizing that I wasn't going to eat. The manager came by to apologize, but really just wanted to tell us we were wrong and he was right. When our server dropped off the bill of about $17, we asked that the meal be comped. This was a hard one for me to rate, but the more I thought about it, the easier it was. I took my wife and 18 month old so. Here for dinner. We haven't been to a Mexican restaurant in awhile, so we were excited to try something new. We arrived at about 5pm and the dinner rush had not started yet. Only a few people in the whole place, yet we waited for the host to seat us for a solid 5 minutes. Normally not a big deal, but it wasn't bust at all!!! The host was not very friendly and when I asked for a highchair, he just pointed to the corner where they were stacked up. Out waiter greeted us within minutes. That said, we put a drink order in and it was nearly 10 minutes before we saw home again. At that point brought our chips and salsa and informed us the blender was broken. Considering most of their specialty drinks were blended drinks and took that long to inform us, it was a bit off putting. After sitting for a solid 15 to 20 minted we finally got our order put in and had to ASK for waters as we were never given anything. Food was quick and was decent. By no means authentic, but we didn't expect that. If the service could have been better we prolly would go back at some point, but for now we will go to other places. read more

This place has a good atmosphere and good service. The food is pretty typical. It relies heavily on salt and cheese for flavor, however, it comes quick and you get a ton of it. I enjoyed my taco and refried beans. My wife got shrimp fajitas which where good: flavorful and not overcooked. Unfortunately, this place doesn't seem to prepare anything outside of prepackaged flavors. I can cook all this stuff at home, healthier, and with more spices and herbs. I was looking for something real Mexican for brunch, and since I did not want to drive all the way to downtown, I decided to stop somewhere nearby. Decided on Los Amigos...after seeing few stars, and like some posts mention, empty parking lot, I decided to give them one chance. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros (which I was craving for). First thing...they charge $0.99 more because this is only available M-F...what!!!! Really, eggs and beans...what's the complexity? Anyway I wanted them with corn tortillas. That's why I was here... Mexicans don't eat rice during lunch...nor rancheros with flour tortillas; not sure where this idea came from. Anyway I ordered mine with no rice and corn tortillas. Waiter was nice and gave me double order of refried beans. Dish was good in size, but the eggs were from maybe a dove! Small and all covered in oil... Lots of beans...I could not finish them! And I had to reorder my tortillas...I did not want flour and that's what I was given. Needed more coffee and, where is the waiter!!! He hasn't showed up for 5 min! And there they are...sending text messages. OMG...manager should be around to see all this. Got my check and left a small tip. This is the go-to Mexican place for my Kalamazoo relatives, and I think it probably offers a satisfactory experience much of the time. Whether yours is or not may depend on what you order. I went with a large group of family members. Service was decent considering the size of our group and the fact that almost nobody ordered the same thing--not hard to do since the menu is very large. Most of the group seemed satisfied with their food, though most also had quibble or two. Exactly what these were I can't remember (like I said it was large group), but nobody had a problem clearing their plate, and plates here come with large portions. I did taste my wife's enchiladas rancheras and it was very good. The pork was very tender and the sauce was pleasantly spicy. My own meal, carne asadas, was not so enjoyable. It came with large pieces of steak but that was overcooked, tough (couldn't cut it without shaking the table), and not well seasoned. The beans and guacamole my have been the highlight of my dinner, above average put against those of other Mexican restaurants I've been to, though these aren't the reason you order carne asada. Given my party's overall experience with the food, I could probably give Los Amigos three stars, but I have to deduct a star for the beverage service. When we walked in, a blackboard behind the host's stand announced a special on Bell's Oberon beer. That sounded good, so several of us ordered them. Our server returned to inform us they were out of Oberon. There were two other beers from Bell's (the local craft beer powerhouse) on the menu, but were told these also were unavailable. In a town with large craft brewing scene, where microbrews are offered at nearly every bar and eatery and people tend to expect them, it's surprising Los Amigos would let themselves run short. I don't mind the bottled Mexican beers they had, but if you're expecting a Bell's, they're a letdown. I could see returning here, if only to get those enchiladas rancheras, but on the rare visits I make to Kalamazoo, I wouidn't make a point of it. read more

We wanted to remove a couple of items and add veggies and we were pointed to the limited options under vegeterian and told we need to order from that. I orders the steak fajitas and normally I just order the vegetable which are very flavorable so this time I thought Why not. Add some steak=more flavor. Not in this case. Secondly the service was horrible. The place wasn't that busy and our waiter we saw 3 times. Drink order/delivery. Food order/delivery and the bill. Not once did he come to the table to check to see if we could use a refill. In fact he sat down at a table right in my plain eye sight and played on his electronic device. I had the Al Pastor Tacos which were amazing! Best Al Pastor that I have had in a long while. It came with three tacos on corn, cliantro and onions, and tomatoes. I asked for cheese to be added. The meal also comes with a side of rice and beans and pico de gio. Service was fast especially for a lunch crew of 8. No one else in my party had any problems with the food. The chips and salsa was amazing as well. Salsa is spicy with a kick so if you're sensitive to spice avoid it. Well definitely be back. read more

I ordered the Chilies Poblano dinner. Description says 2 deep fried poblano stuffed peppers served on top of a bed of beef w rice. It comes out no beef. When I asked the waiter said "he cancelled the beef off that". I told him that HE should have edited the menus or the server should have told me upon ordering!! Waiter was nice and offered to bring a side of beef but by this point our food is cold. THEN we get charged full price of $11.49. I could have ordered the 2 poblano a la carte for $6 and side of rice $2.49....for a total of $8.49 as it is same as I was served. Instead they charged me $11.49 for something I didn't get!!! Maybe their DOL suit cost them so much they are cutting back, but don't falsely describe a dish on the menu and overcharge customers now!! Los Amigos is one of our favorite local Mexican food joints in town! We dine in at least once a month! My son loves the fajitas! The single serving easily serves two as long as you request extra tortillas! He and I often share those! Other favorites are the carnitas platter, (SO much food!) the Burrito Monterey, which is MASSIVE and so delicious! Easily shared or take the leftovers home for a filling lunch, tomorrow!! Anything with the cheese sauce is delicious! The only warning I would give is the "steak" in any entree is not great. It's usually chewy and on the tougher side! I once ordered a steak burrito where steak was the main filling and it was difficult to eat! If you want good steak definitely stick with the carné asada! That's real steak and delicious every time! My absolute fav dish there is the Polo Toluca! It's a chicken and chorizo meal with the most fabulous flavor combinations! I love to eat with just my fork! (no tortillas) The rice is also amazing! Always moist and flavorful! The staff is always friendly and wants you to leave happy and full!! They have good drink specials most nights of the week! Vsited the Westnedge location with some family. We had a party of 9 and was seated quickly. The service was a little slow but it was Cinco de Mayo so they were a little busy. I ordered the grilled chicken taco with rice and beans. Others ordered the Carne Asada burrito, enchilada/taco/chile poblano combo and more. Los Amigos is very inviting and very festive. Since I'm not from the Portage area, I'm not sure why it moved. I'm glad I called before we went, because if we didn't do it, we wouldn't have known it relocated to its current Westnedge location. The menu is huge and it has some pretty unique items. The menu online doesn't do it justice. My bf's entree was served in a dug out grilled pineapple. I had the Burrito California, which was covered in a cheese sauce. It was so huge and I couldn't finish half of it. I love the grilled steak inside the Burrito California. I think the only problem with a burrito that big is that once you start eating it, everything started to mix together and I couldn't tell what all I was eating after awhile. The service was great.
