The staff is friendly and you can tell they take pride in everything they make. All of the dessert items looked beautiful and delicious. I was there to try the food though. I order a pastor taco and a chorizo taco. First, the presentation was phenomenal. They include red and green sauces, grilled onions, roasted jalepeno, cucumbers, limes and radishes on the side. Out of the many, many Mexican restaurants I've tried since moving to MI 3 years ago, this is the first place that included garnish on the side. The food and presentation reminded of Las Vegas, where I'm from. The pastor meat is tender and flavorful. The chorizo is full of flavor and not dry. Other places drain the chorizo which causes it to lose a lot of flavor. The chorizo was exactly the way I like it. Overall, I will be back to try other menu items.

Food was very good, buffet was very clean and well stocked even with the long line, service was good and polite. 1 star ding was for their terrible diced steak; it tasted fine, but was full of big chunks of gristle, I should have taken a picture of all that I separated out; sincerely the worst quality I've ever had - but they can fix that quickly with better quality meat. Other meat selections were very good. I provided my mostly positive 1st time experience feedback at the counter and mentioned the poor steak to maybe the owner/wife? - I'm not sure she understood (i.e., possible language barrier?). IMO the $16.95 is a bit high, but food was tasty. Will go again, maybe Taco Tuesdays.

A 4 indicates that it's good and I will definitely be back. Food: was pretty good leaning slight closer to more authentic Mexican food than many of similar places in Portage and Kalamazoo. Our table had a burrito, salad, and street tacos. Everyone seem to enjoy the quality and taste. See attached picture of my Burrito Ranchero. The included guacamole, picante, and sour cream are extremely small. Service: expected a little more responsiveness. It wasn't really busy for a Monday dinner seating. But many of our extra requested food items ie fresh jalapenos, cheese, and salsa came later with meal getting cold. Our server had no sense of urgency or hospitality. Atmosphere: We liked the seating which was private enough to have an enjoyable conversation but open enough to observe other around us enjoying themselves. Overall a very pleasant clean place with a warm fun vibe.

The corn tacos were okay, hard to eat with the shredded chicken. Chips and salsa are ok. Guacamole would have made it even better, as the shells broke after a bite and got soggy from the liquid. The chicken itself wasn't bad, not super flavorful. The queso was quite runny, purely liquid. Some onions or cilantro would have been nice condiment adds.

I recently stopped at Roca in downtown Kalamazoo on one of those beautifully perfect Saturday…read moreevenings when summer is still holding on while fall hovers just over its shoulder, patiently waiting for its turn. I sat outside on the covered patio and was immediately welcomed by Cardyn, who was absolutely exceptional throughout the evening. I started with the Hibiscus Lemon Mezgarita, an unusual take on a margarita made with mezcal, lemon, agave-hibiscus syrup, and orange bitters. I love a good margarita, and this was one I was very glad I chose. Next came the homemade tortilla chips and Salsa Roja. The chips were fresh, warm, and had just the right amount of salt, while the salsa was blended exactly the way I like it--not overly chunky, but not so smooth that the individual flavors disappeared. For my main course, I had the Braised Lamb Tacos, and they were wonderful. The lamb was incredibly flavorful and practically melted in my mouth, while the other ingredients each added something without overpowering one another. Between the food, the atmosphere, and exceptional service, Roca was the perfect ending to a busy day. I'm not entirely sure whether I chose Roca or Roca chose me, but either way, I'm very glad I ended up there. Five stars and a restaurant I would happily visit again.
