Los Agaves is a Santa Barbara staple and I've never had a bad meal here. It's a casual but not too casual place with lots of outdoor seating and situated in the courtyard of Camino Real. The line always moves fast and the food comes out quickly too. What compelled me to write this review was because I had a delicious pescado a la diabla, which was a daily special. The fish was a huge portion -- a whole filet with a delicious spicy sauce, perfectly cooked and flaky. The rice and beans are always great, perfectly seasoned and cooked. I also had a passionfruit margarita which was big and well balanced. The salsa bar is very good; the habanero salsa is really tasty but their old version without cream was one of the best salsa I ever had and I'm so sad they don't offer it anymore. It was legitimately spicy. I always love coming here with my friends after a movie so we can discuss the flick over some great mexican food. read more

Coming from the Bay Area, I definitely had pretty high expectations for Mexican food and Los Agaves was rather impressive! My friends and I came on a busy Taco Tuesday. You order and pay at the register, grab a number, seat yourself, and your food (along with complimentary chips) is brought to your table. There were plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options. Everything else is self-serve, including drinks and salsa/toppings. Their salsa bar had a great variety and I honestly loved every salsa I tried! You can't go wrong with whatever you choose, but I recommend the avocado salsa. My friend and I swapped a taco from each of our plates, so I was able to try their tacos al pastor and tacos del mar with halibut. The al pastor was particularly flavorful and well marinated, and to my surprise, I enjoyed the pineapple bits in the taco. The halibut tasted fresh and the chipotle sauce on top paired nicely. I also love a good side of rice and beans and I can't even put my finger on it, but it was just so tasty. It got pretty busy during the dinner rush and I was seated right along the order line, but nothing too disruptive to our dining experience. Los agaves is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Goleta. The service is always quick and friendly, you order up at the counter and then sit with your table number and your food is brought to you. The inside has a classic Santa Barbara feel to it and is warm and inviting. They also have a very organized take-out system, and their online ordering is really easy and convenient. The guacamole is fresh and while it's a little pricey, the portion os generous. The steak nachos had toppings spread throughout the chips, not just sitting on top which has been my experience at some other restaurants. The quesabirria special is my go to dish here, the meat is so tender and flavorful! read more

Dinner here is a staple for me! There are two locations, one in Goleta and another in Downtown SB. Casual dining but very crowded almost every night. The service is always quick whether you dine in or get take out. Dining in you get table chips and then can take full advantage of the homemade salsa bar. My favorite dish is the chicken chimichanga, yum! The quesadilla and flautas are also tasty, and the smothered burritos are very popular. Los Agaves is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. This spot sits in the middle of Goleta by the Costco, but do not overlook it! This spot serves extremely yummy burritos and unlimited chips! I usually sit outside to soak in some sun, but the interior is nicely decorated and clean. Sometimes you will see a few birds wandering in, but it really adds to the ambiance. I got the mole chicken enchiladas, the enchiladas were really oily. The beans were on the runnier side and rice was a bit bland. I did enjoy the environment of the restaurant because you have a choice of indoor seating or outdoor seating. They have a salsa bar available. This is such a terrible taco I almost started laughing. It's one tiny blob of meat and one tiny squirt of sour cream and a tiny bit of wilted iceberg lettuce - FOR $7.50! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! One thing to note is seating can be a little crowded/busy, but it has never been a huge issue for me. This location at Camino Marketplace is somewhat uneventful. No bar, and the same (as we are accustom) counter-ordering with the expected full 15-25% tip. Ugh. I got a carnitas burrito, and while the meat was great, the overall was just an average burrito, nothing special. Prices reflect a "restaurant", not fast food, so don't be mistaken here. Tacos were horrible, meat was dryyyyy! The seafood ceviche was way too sour ! When asked what beers they have, the cashier just stand there looked at us and didn't even care to reply us. Sauce bar was very hard to "self serve ". This place has no space for customers to be in line for sauce and others to fill soft drinks. Staff only care if their own friend or family stop by the restaurant. I don't know, maybe they pick and choose to be nice depends on their mood. Molcajete was delicious and wasn't over tomato based sauce more of a chipotle driven sauce which I liked much more than the typical tomato based. As long as I'm on the Central Coast, I will continue to drive an hour for 2 dishes at Los Agaves. My go to true blue are the Chiles Nortenos, but the molé chicken enchiladas are something dreams are made of! The molé is smoky and chocolatey and unmatched. Also, there is a smoky salsa that would be my drink of choice when I go to Los Agaves. I enjoy sitting out on the patio and people watching the busy marketplace in the late afternoons. I was excited to try this since someone who went to la super rica taqueria said this was just as good or better. Since la super rica is closed on Tuesday, thought I would give it a try. Except their prices are a lot higher - like 2x super rica prices. I was hesitant to try but saw someone post about taco tuesday. We got soft chorizo and potato tacos, and crunch beef and chicken. The soft tacos just have protein - no onion, cilantro like normal street tacos. The hard taco has protein, lettuce and sour cream. It was just hard on the teeth to eat. One of our family favorites when in Santa Barbara! The cheese enchiladas are sooo goood!!! They're the perfect cheese pull! My son enjoyed the chile relleno plate with rice. Gave it a good 8/10. Service is super fast, staff is very friendly as well. It's always busy, especially at dinner time and lunch time, but the wait is well worth it.
