The overall experience was good, taking one star off because of the service. We had to wait 30 minutes even though we made a reservation. The atmosphere and ambiance are amazing, very well thought-out, and well-decorated. The food was amazing, with generous portions. Most dishes are spicy, so if you cannot handle spice; this may not be the best restaurant for you to try. Service seems a bit of a mess, not only did we have to wait 30 minutes but some of the servers here are a bit sloppy. The waiter who served our aguachile spilled the sauce all over the table and did not notice it. I would say Loreto is my favorite restaurant in Frogtown. It's located right on the LA river in quaint Frogtown, which is an area that I rarely make it to so it was nice to mix it up this past weekend for Saturday night dinner. The cuisine is Mexican, but it's not like the traditional casual El Choli sit down type of Mexican restaurant but more elevated. Inside has a great vibe with low lighting and spread out seating. Half the tables are inside and half are outside and it's a sort of place that would be especially great for a date. They don't have a dedicated parking lot but they do offer valet for $15 however we were able to find free neighborhood parking about a block away which is what I would suggest because it was a nice walk through the neighborhood to and from dinner. The plates are share size portions, except for the full size plates at the bottom of the menu. For my first visit, I chose the Ensenada Ceviche to start and thought it was fantastic. The melon mixing with the Dungeness crab really made it for me. For my entrée, I chose the Branzino, which was a very large sized portion and was absolutely delicious. It came with tortillas to make your own tacos and honestly, it was a huge hit at the table. There were very few bones in the Branzino and the flavors were just stupendous. Overall, a fantastic Mexican restaurant in a quiet part of town. I would recommend to anyone and plan to be back in the near future. read more

Loreto is a diamond in the Frogtown rough. The ceviche selection is the highlight with a nice range of flavors. Grilled octopus was pretty delicious too. We've been wanting to try Loreto for a while and it did not disappoint! My hesitation came as I'm not a big seafood eater aside from shellfish but the menu was certainly accommodating to that! We got 4 dishes to share between 2 and it was the perfect amount of food. Food: Bang Bang Shrimp Tostada was the perfect start to the meal, the shrimp had a nice crisp to it and the flavors were bold and super tasty, even the tiny pickles on top, I could've eaten a bowl of the pickles - highly recommend! Dón-Pling these were sooo tasty, the filling was cooked with a nice char too which I loved - highly recommend! Cavatelli Pasta was my favorite dish, rich savory flavor, very decadent, the Cavatelli was al dente complimented by big pieces of clam - top recommendation! Mar-Esquites were so good, I'm not big on corn but it came in a nice broth that flavored everything so well - recommend! Cab/Sangiovese blend was really lovely, great martini and margarita. This is a great place to go with friends and family, dishes are easy to share, it's very big and open, super friendly service. We'll definitely be back soon! read more

Did I just find one of my new favorite restaurants in LA? Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood in Frogtown, Loreto is a seafood lover's dream spot. Service was knowledgeable and attentive and clearly appreciated food. We probably over-ordered for two people (toro sashimi, leche de tigre ceviche, culichi tostada, bang bang shrimp tostada, mar-esquites, croquetas, and pulp brocheta) but we finished every single bite. Standouts were the toro sashimi (so simple but so delicious), the culichi tostada (my absolute favorite from the evening; the scallops were so fresh and the sweetness from the Asian pear, passionfruit, and kumquat was wonderful), and the pulpo brocheta (perfectly cooked octopus and the peanut salsa provided a nice crunch). Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, this unique setting offers a glimpse into the experience that awaits. The open, rustic, factory-style space features striking double doors that lead into a stunning, wave-like bar stretching across two long walls of the restaurant. Despite its size, the bar was packed, and service was a bit slow. Unfortunately, our experience wasn't as warm or welcoming as we had hoped, but the drinks more than made up for it. We ordered two spicy margaritas, and they were absolutely perfect--just the right balance of spice, sweetness, tartness, salt, and tequila. For food, we tried the Yellowtail Sashimi, Camote Hornedo, Mar-Esquites, Atun Picante, Callo Brochetas, and Churros for dessert. Standouts: The Yellowtail Sashimi and Atun Picante were the biggest surprises of the night! I initially expected them to be slight variations of what you'd find at a sushi restaurant, but quite the contrary--they were remarkably different in texture, taste, and preparation. Yellowtail Sashimi was delicate, precisely cut, and bathed in the most sensational sauce. The combination of chopped onions, lime, cilantro, epazote (a fragrant herb), and pequín pepper created an explosion of fresh, zesty, and aromatic flavors. Atun Picante was an unexpected delight! A variation of the popular tuna crispy rice, the epazote-infused rice had an extraordinary crispiness, adding a delightful crunch to each bite. The fresh, generously cut tuna was dressed in a rich salsa negra and paired with avocado. Creamy, crispy, and packed with bold, zesty flavors--this dish was outstanding. Other Dishes: Camote Hornedo was comforting, hearty, and full of flavor. The combination of roasted and charred Japanese sweet potato, escabeche, clams, and labneh created a unique and satisfying dish. Mar-Esquites didn't pack as much punch as some street corn variations, but it was still a well-balanced, creamy, and tangy dish. The mix of shrimp, corn, lobster mayo, chile sequin, lemon, and queso fresco came together nicely. Callo Brochetas was our least favorite dish. The scallops were grilled beautifully and delicious on their own, but the overall dish--featuring salsa de cacahuate, pickles, and cilantro on a white creamy base served with purple tortillas--lacked the depth of flavor we found in our other choices. Dessert: The Churros were shaped into an "LA" and served with a passionfruit yuzu sauce--a spectacular pairing! The churros were perfectly crispy on the outside and sweet, making for a delightful ending to the meal. To top it all off, a spoonful of coconut ice cream was gifted to me for my birthday; the ice cream was rich, creamy, and bursting with fresh coconut flavor, making it an absolute treat. I finally had the opportunity to try out Loreto and it didn't disappoint. We made an early dinner reservation and were able to easily find parking in the neighborhood. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and shown to a nice table in the main dining room. We needed to move the table more into the room as there was a large plant behind one of the chairs whose giant leaves were hanging over into the seating area. Why they hadn't rectifies that in advance was surprising especially given that the table next to us had the same issue. Hmmmm....but let's move on to the menu. While perusing the menu, we ordered drinks. I had a drink that was made with milk punch but I can't remember the name. It was delicious! Meanwhile, we chose to order the Aguachile Negro, Ceviche Magdalena, Bang Bang Tostada, Pulpo Brocheta and Grilled Brussels Sprouts. The Aguachile Negro was excellent, with a nice amount of shrimp piled in the middle and surrounded by cucumber and avocado. The aguachile itself was nice and bright with ample citrus, robust charred chile flavor and a nice amount of heat. The Ceviche Magdalena was also quite good. It contained pieces of yellowtail along with cucumber, melon, onion, jalapeño and avocado. They gave us some small tostadas to enjoy with it. These were our favorite two dishes of the night by far. Next up was the Bang Bang Tostada which was highly recommended by our server. I'm not sure what I was expecting but it was on the disappointing side. For those unfamiliar with the term "bang bang", it referred to shrimp that were battered and fried, then mixed with Bang Bang sauce which overpowered the shrimp and made them soggy instead of crispy. And the toppings were piled so high there was no way to pick it up and eat it. I ended up eating the shrimp one by one and then breaking up the tostada with a fork. I should have known better than to order this but was swayed by the server. It did not represent coastal Baja in any way whatsoever. Two thumbs down. Next we received our Pulpo Brocheta and Grilled Brussels Sprouts. We absolutely LOVE grilled octopus and order it almost everywhere we go. We received two skewers with chunks of octopus, both the body and tentacles, that had been grilled and brushed with Salsa Cacahuate. We eagerly jumped on this dish but were quickly let down. The majority of the octopus was chewier than a rubber band and the sauce completely overpowered the octopus. It was beyond disappointing. Another two thumbs down. The Brussels Sprouts were decent and came with a nice Cesar Hollandaise. We were ready to leave when we saw a beautiful dessert being served at another table. We had to have it and it was one of the best desserts I have had in a long time. The base was a meringue that was light and crunchy and it was layered with some of the best tasting strawberries you can find along with a delicious whipped cream. What a fantastic ending to our meal!! Overall we loved the ambiance and the guest service was quite good. We loved the aguachile and ceviche as well as the dessert, which I still think about regularly. Sadly the tostada and brocheta were complete letdowns. We look forward to returning but we will certainly avoid certain parts of the menu. For what they charge, those two items were far from worth the price. read more

We ordered: CDMX tostada, Jurel ceviche, Atún picante (crispy rice & tuna), empanadas, soft shell crab tacos, and LA churros. The ceviche in particular was very creative with fresh and unexpected flavors, and the empanada was so light and juicy. Came here last night with my work team for my boss' going away dinner as it was her suggestion! She always eats at really nice restaurants so we just took her word for it! She was right! The establishment is a cute little palm springs vibe, very open with cacti in the outside patio. They do have a parking lot but it's valet only and it's $15 (with a service charge less than $2 if you use a credit card) This is mostly all if not ALL seafood options. We got the lobster and the branzino. Personally I liked the lobster more, but you get more bang for your buck if you get the branzino. It comes with Spanish rice, black beans, mini quesadillas, pickled onions and two salsas. We also loved the bang bang tostada, so we ordered another. We ordered something that was on top of crispy rice and OMG, drool, it was probably one of my favorite things that we ordered! We had to order the beet oysters and we got the West Coast ones because they're less briny. The churro dessert is so cute because they fry them as the LA symbol. I've been here on 4 different occasions. I always come back cos of ambiance and that the food resembles that of Mexico City Marisco style restaurants, but lands right at middddd. Tonight again i forgot about how bad the service was. I like to take people here cos the vibes could be immaculate---but they're so not. We sat inside and there were flies buzzing all around our $98 seafood tower, fucking gross. On top of that the servers all look miserable and don't really wanna be there. Expressions are monotone and ungrateful, Ana was very rude and didn't have proper etiquette. Come to find out she was one of the managers which now makes sense why the service is so bad. She made the experience awful. I have never met a manager with no customer experience & improper conduct towards clients. It was very disappointing I hope the owner knows that their restaurant is being managed poorly. It was overall a fantastic experience that never let us down other than the fact that we ordered way too much food :) We didn't even end up trying the mains because the small plates were just so good.
