We came here for dinner, the restaurant was quite busy so I thought it should be good food. We were seated quickly, received a pitcher of water but not pored into our glass. The comp chips were good and a bottle of salsa for us to pour into a small dipping bowl. Im trying to decide if they made the salsa or if its caned. My wife ordered a bean and cheese smothered burrito, I think the beans were mixed with chile verde, yea pork chunks in a bean burro but it could have been the smothering, lots and lots of smothering. She ate half, said it was ok. I ordered the small combo, 'here we go, ill tell you how many beans were in that meal' bean meat mash in the taco wetted with all the sauce on the plate, bean burrito different beans than the taco kinda gray color in a dry burrito shell, bean tostada in a wet pile of bean mash with cheese and lettuce on top, a cheese enchilada in a red enchilada sauce. Pros: it was only $9.00 and I could only eat half of it. Will I return? this is my second trip within a ten year period so I can't say if I will return anytime soon. I've been coming here for years, but don't worry, I will keep my biases in check. Lorena's is definitely good at one thing: consistency. And that goes for the pros and the cons. It's safe to say that Lorena's is not the best nor the worst Mexican restaurant around. The food is pretty good and steaming hot when it arrives. The chips and salsa are also a nice appetizer. But even then, the food lacks seasoning and sometimes can be bland. The ambiance is fine, however dated, as it hasn't changed in the lifetime I've been coming here. Finally, it's no secret that other Yelpers are unhappy with Lorena's service and rightfully so. The food was decent, I had the smothered burrito with rice and beans. The price was what I expected. The restaurant looked like it needed some upgrades as well. However the service here was horrible and everyone we encountered at this place were very rude. The hostess did not great us, asked how many and then showed us to our table. Did not say anything to us nor did she smile or show any kind of pleasant greetings. Since it was our first time there, we did not know that salsa was in a container that looked like ketchup, so we ate our chips without salsa. It wasn't until we had already finished our food that we noticed someone else pouring salsa from the container into a little dish, it would've been nice to know when they gave us our chips. I also noticed that they charged for refills on chips which they made sure to post in every booth. My 2 year old started to cry in the restaurant since it was around nap time and she was really tired. We tried to get her to calm down but ended up taking her out side. one of the workers there told us "you shoud've taken her outside when she first started crying." It was a very rude comment and on top of the lack of service and atmosphere of this restaurant , I will never be going back here or recommending this place to anyone. read more

People call me a vegan and I was able to eat here with no issues. The spouse had a cheese enchilada and had an issue with the enchilada sauce (a dark brown color) being almost a bitter flavor. The salsa had good flavor and was on the table in a squeeze bottle and was not chunky. We like the chunky salsa for the consistency. I had two servings of rice and beans and asked for the fajita vegetables to be steamed or grilled with out oil which they did. The spouse said the chips were just ok. Waitresses have bad attitudes, food is a little bland and plated without any care. It started off great. But after we ordered it just went down hill. It was slow yet we only saw our waitress maybe 3 times in an hour and a half. It's pretty sad when the bus boy gets you more refills than the wait staff. The service used to be great but tonight I don't think I saw one customer receiving good service. I might be back eventually just in hopes that the service returns to being good. A fairly bland and unimpressive Mexican restaurant. I will admit, i have been here a number of times. Never have i walked away completely blown away and dying to come back again. I feel for the most part, there are only a few Mexican restaurants that go above the average expectation, and Lorena's is not one of them. This trip, we were celebrating a birthday with family. When i arrived, we were walked back to a "party" room. They did very little to set things up for us, so i had to walk around and deliver menus, silverware and water to each person. The complimentary chips and salsa came out, nothing earth shattering. I decided to go with something not as heavy and get the combo fajitas. When they came out, there was only one tortilla, which i thought was a little odd. The steak was really good actually, but the chicken was dry and rubbery. Stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday. I wanted to try a few dishes I like at other Mexican restaurants to gauge Lorena's. I ordered a tamale, a chili relleno, and a soft shell shredded beef taco. The chips were crisp and salty but the salsa was plain old tomato sauce. Tasted like it was from a can, with a slight sweet edge. The tamale had huge chunks of pork that didn't seem to be seasoned and the corn meal coating was dry and broke apart like corn bread. The chili relleno was fine. The shredded beef was unseasoned and the flour tortilla was dry and cracked in half when I lifted the taco for a bite. I wasn't impressed with the service, not very friendly and never asked how the meal tasted. I had to ask for Tabasco (which they didn't have) to add flavor to the tamale and taco. read more

I have never been so dissatisfied with a restaurant. Usually, what they lack in one place, they make up in another. Lorena's was just a miss all around. First, the service is awful. When I first walked in two waitresses were sitting in the first booth talking. They made sure, to finish up their conversation before, not greeting us, but just walking us to our table. Second, how can you mess up chips, and salsa? The chips were bland, the salsa was in a ketchup container and had zero taste, I mine as well, have been dipping my chips in water. Fine, I thought, the main food will be better. I order the small combination that came with a, burrito, tostada, enchilada, and a hard shell taco. I did not expect them to all come on the same plate. Stacked on top of each other. I couldn't distinguish what was what, because it was all a sloppy mess. My hard taco, and tostada were buried at the bottom, and we're completely soggy. This is the type of Mexican food you want at 2am when you are very drunk - cheap, fast, and greasy! I had a smothered pork tamale that was very dry and a beef enchilada that had no taste other than grease. My sister had one of their breakfast options, offered all day, and she enjoyed the eggs, ham, and tortillas. Her potatoes were very dry however. Not awful, and on par with El Matador in Bountiful. Their chips and salsa and refried beans were great! The spice on the chips was an unique twist. That's about all I can say that was nice. My wife wanted me to be mean and nasty but I'll try to be fair. The rest of the dinner items were fair to horrible. I lived in Laredo and know real Mexican and Tex-Mex so I was not expecting authentic Mexican and my expectations were low. However, this was bad by any standard. If I wanted fair Mexican American, I could have gone to Taco Bell, spent less money and enjoyed the meal more. I'm not a big fan of chains and prefer to patronize locally run restaurants so when you hear me endorse a national chain over a family restaurant, the experience was really bad. The Mrs. ordered the Grande Combo Plate and I had the Chicken and Steak Fajita. City Weekly and many Yelp reviewers said Lorena's had the best Chili Verde so maybe we caught them on a bad night. Maybe the cook was ticked at the owners and wanted to put them out of business. My wife couldn't chew the mystery meat. It was like they took overcooked fried pork sirloin chunks, let it sit in an uncovered warmer all day and threw it in sauce just before serving--and put a little over a bean and cheese burrito. We were glad they didn't put a lot on the plate. My wife had me taste the toughest, driest Chili Verde I've ever broken a tooth on and the sauce wasn't very good or authentic either. Her enchilada was cold with semi-hard cheese and enchilada sauce was fair. An Americanized Tostada and a hard shell Taco (authentic Mexican American in a bent Tostada) is a bit redundant. I endured the toughest chicken fajita with a few small bits of leathery steak in my life. I've never experience a plate fajita dinner with a lot of tough meat stuffed into one gordita flour tortilla. Most resturants the fajita comes out by itself on the plate served with a few tortillas on the side. No Pico de Gallo with Fajita's?! Come on! Chili's or Applebees are a huge step ahead with fajita on Lorena's. The meats at the chains are at least tender and flavorful, and also comes with Pico de Gallo and a bit of Guacamole, too. If you want cheap, good and authentic Mexican try the tacos stands on Midvale's Center Street or Victor's Tires on 7th West in Salt Lake. You will experience tender and flavorful meats. If you want cheap and decent Mexican American stick with Dell Taco and get your side of beans in a cup. Rice and beans on a plate with bad main courses doesn't make for a good meal or authentic Mexican. MEXICAN is supposed to be prepared to make even the cheapest cuts of meat tender and the sauces flavorful. read more

This is easily the nastiest Mexican food I've ever come across. There were undertones of very bizarre flavors, the salsa was more of a vinegared tomato paste kept in a ketchup bottle on the table. Lorena's is the kind of Mexican restaurant that cuts straight to the point. Cheap prices, huge portions, and amazing 'authentic-yet-not-at-all-pretentious' food. The owners, the servers, and the hosts are all friendly, genuine people. The Chili Verde is to die for. It's a lot thicker and a lot heartier than most chili's you'll find. I'd almost compare it to a spicy pork gravy than anything else. You may not find the overrated sense of snobby cred that the hipsters give the red/blue iguana, but you will find some amazing home-made mexican food for next to nothing. read more

First thing's first... Go to Lorena's! My family and I have gone here for probably 15 years now. I every time someone in the family comes to visit from out of town, be sure to see us at Lorena's. Before tonight, I hadn't been there in a few months. I guess because we hadn't had any visitors and my wife's not real keen on the place. But this weekend, my brother's in town and he wanted to go to "our place." We met up at 6 o'clock (prime time for eating out) and got seated right away. Normally, I would recommend their salsa to anyone that loves non-chunky, pretty spicy salsa (no, I'm not trying to say it's SUPER spicy, it's just at the perfect temperature for a half Mexican like myself), but today, it was not good. It tasted like spicy tomato sauce. And, unfortunately for me, don't like my salsa tasting like tomato sauce. But in my 15 years of going there, this is the FIRST time I've ever had this problem. I pretty much have a 'usual.' It's the chicken enchilada on a flour tortilla with green enchilada sauce, not red... And, of course, sour cream on the side. Honestly, it's delicious! I love it. One enchilada is the perfect size for a feller like me (around 200 lbs.). Another favorite is the regular smothered burrito. Tasty! If you happen to sit where Ernie is your is your server, consider yourself lucky. He's pretty awesome. There are numerous restaurants in Utah that have the same menu. Lorenas, La Frontera, La Puenta, La Fuenta, Las Lunas. I believe that Lorena's in Bountiful does a better job than the rest. I go to these restaurants (Lorena's espeically) for the Chili Verde, I either get it as a burrito or as Huevos Rancheros. Open on Sunday? In Davis County? It's real folks! I don't know what's up with the listing, but I've been there on Sunday and can report it's not a mirage. Still, it's mostly another greasy Mexican joint. A step above, but this ain't no Tacos Daniel or Chungas. The steaks are decent and come with tasty potatoes. Beans & rice are better than average for sure. The servings are enormous - which is good if you find yourself starvingly hungry on a Sunday round these parts, so keep in mind when ordering. My usual eating companions like the chile verde and enchiladas a great deal, and report the burritos are up to Mexican-diner standards. Don't bother with the tamales, they're worth missing. Service is very friendly, attentive, and usually humorous. Charming staff goes a long way in my book, and Lorena's does that pretty well. The vibe there overall: fun, casual, and like it's always filled with regulars, makes this a good place to be even if the food isn't fantastic. Gross. I don't remember this place being this bad. I'm confident that my whole meal was poured from a variety of cans onto my plate and then microwaved. Neither my wife nor I could stomach the mush on our plate long enough to finish what we ordered. I have no idea how this place stays open, let alone busy. Happiness is a warm tortilla. Of course, it's the hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurants that are the best. This is the best one in Bountiful. I give it four stars despite the lack of ambience. The four stars are based on deliciousness only. The restaurant itself is cheesy. Lots of room for groups (in fact it was so busy one Saturday night I was seated in the back near a Utah family of 23. All at one long table). No music. Plastic everything. Old vinyl booths. Oh and poor ventilation so you are guaranteed to come out with your clothes smelling like a chili rellano. Portions are huge. Try the smothered anything. I'm a cheese enchilada fan and I also dig the chips and hot sauce (let's be fair, that's not salsa). My husband swears by the ribs. Sopapillas on special occasions. Some reviewers have said this is not authentic Mexican food. This is not tex-mex. This is not what you ate when your cruise ship stopped in Acapulco. This is what I ate growing up in the barrio: Mexican-American cuisine from the great southwest. Service is average. Prices are very reasonable. Parking is ample. Moving from New Mexico, I am anxious to find any restaurant that knows what real Hatch green chili is. This place serves something that is perhaps mid-way between New Mexico green chili and verde sauce. It was good, enjoyed trying it. I had the green chili burrito and also tried the chili relleno stuffed with cheese. I prefer chili relleno stuffed with shredded beef, but again that does not seem common in Utah? I did not prefer the way they make their salsa. I prefer it chunky and without a lot a chili pepper. But this is a nice local place to eat for Mexican food. read more
