My wife and I visited for the first time on a busy Saturday night. The place is pretty big, so seating was plentiful and service never skipped a beat. Our server was attentive and efficient, and the food arrived hot and fresh. The salsa was honestly the highlight for me. It's served warm, which makes all the difference, and it's delicious. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to have a funeral potluck that is Mexican food themed, prepared by people who have never had Mexican food... try this place out. Our server was the only good part of this experience. He was kind and attentive. The chips seem to be multigrain? The salsa tastes like Pace Picante Sauce and it's served warm. Don't get me wrong, I'm not better than Pace but why was it warm? We ordered queso dip and the texture was crumbly, like it had too much thickener maybe? No alcohol btw - just in case you were hoping a marg could salvage the meal, nope... not here. My spouse ordered fajitas and I ordered Maria's enchiladas. The fajitas were served on a plate instead of a steaming skillet, and my enchiladas were covered in so much sauce, it took 3 tries to find them to cut into them. As we tried to enjoy our food, we looked around us and noticed the other customers and staff were all white as far as we could see. Not the best sign in a Mexican restaurant. We have loved eating at El Matador's for over 30 years. We ate there again a few weeks ago and were extremely disappointed with the quality of the food and the portion size. I always order the same thing, this time with the first bite I immediately knew it wasn't the same flavor I knew and loved. My husband's usual go-to pork salad was also not the same. The shell was almost half the size and the flavor was lacking. We both agreed that this would be the last time we eat at El Matador's. We've lived here over 7 years and finally tried El Matador. I grew up in SoCal and like authentic Mexican food. This is not that. But I also love Mexican-American type food too (not Taco Bell- better and closer to the real thing than places like that). We have good places like that in SoCal too and I've decided it's time to fill that hole in my life here in Utah. This places does the job. It's not amazing. But it's pretty good. The enchilada sauces are phenomenal and cover a multitude of sins. My husband loved his enchiladas. Most of the meat we had was well cooked. My chili relleno was really good, especially with the sauce, but it was too much like fair food to eat more than a few bites. There is tons of cheese and it's battered and (deep?) fried. The tamale was pretty good, again, especially with the sauce. The chili verde, though....I had to try it because it's my favorite dish. Luckily we got it in addition to our 2 entrees. The a la carte bowl comes like a soup, and it's not green. I ate a few bites straight out of the bowl and it was ok. But once I put it in a tortilla, it was almost inedible. Everything was dry and hard to chew. I won't be getting that again. The place has a fun vibe. It was very busy on a Friday night at 7:30, but they got us seated within 10 minutes. There are a ton of tables and it seats a lot of people. It's also very well staffed and we never had to wait for anything. Because there are so many people, though, it is kind of loud. Our server was the best part of the whole experience. She was super sweet. It started off all wrong... we requested chips and salsa. Pretty standard request, but it was warm. Who in their right mind serves warm salsa. It tasted like warmed pace picante sauce and enchilada sauce mixed together. My husband had a burrito and I had tacos. Both our plates came out hot. The beans had already crusted over and looked like they had been on the plate all day and tasted like they opened a can and dumped them out. The rice had no flavor to it and was barely room temperature. The chicken on my tacos actually had flavor. Probably the best flavor we've found so far. It also tasted like a salt lick. The chicken was so wet that I had eat the tacos with a fork and they dropped everywhere. The shells looked like they went down the street to Del Taco and bought theirs. First time coming here, a few of my friends told me how nice and amazing the people and food was so I had to try it, my friend and I decided to come. I got their before my friend and they still seated me and asked me what I wanted to drinks and my friend. Once my friend got there they came out and brought chips and salsa, and an appetizer for us. Which was delicious, there mango salsa is fire i love it. My friend ordered a smothered bean and cheese and pork burrito, she loved it and said how amazing it was. I got a carna asada burrito with extra cheese and sour cream. It was bomb i was impressed, i also wanted to try some shrimp and they didn't have a shrimp taco but they were able to make arrangements for me and made me a shrimp taco and it was delicious as well.
