Combo #17 Shrimp Chimichanga
Oliver H.

My partner and I were about to get Chipotle and decided on going here instead. We live in the area, we're never going anywhere else - this place was so good and the prices were great. The service was quick and friendly, chips and salsa when we got seated, and it's really cute inside. Definitely coming back

I'm not happy that I have to write a bad review, but this is unfortunately necessary, I'll start off that the only reason I'm even giving this 2 stars instead of one, is that the employees were kind and attentive. The food unfortunately was a 1/5. My wife and I both got chimichangas with steak. They were very small, and very thin. There was hardly anything in them. There had to have only been a few small pieces of steak in them. What's more is, when we got the bill, we were surprised to find out that steak is an additional $5 each. No one bothered to mention this as we had assumed that steak was one of the options. Overall, for two meals, we spent $50 and I've never been so unhappy spending $50 for dinner. It's FAR too expensive for what was received. If it was half that price, I could see giving them 3 stars.

This salsa was really good. It was very spicy and I already had a little bit of a runny nose so it gave me a little bit more of a runny nose, but I couldn't stop eating it. Unfortunately, this visit was very different. We were seated quickly and given menus, but then no one came to greet us or take care of us. We watched several other tables get seated and receive chips and salsa while we continued waiting. The restaurant was somewhat busy, so at first we assumed they were just behind. After waiting quite a while, I finally got up and spoke with one of the managers at the front. He immediately apologized and sent someone over to our table, who was also very apologetic. We ordered two tamales as an appetizer--which were amazing and definitely lived up to what they are known for--and shared the enchiladas since they come with four. Our first server brought the tamales and then told us that Nadia would be taking over our table. However, we never saw Nadia. Eventually, the other server brought our enchiladas, which were also very good. Unfortunately, after that, no one came back to check on us for the remainder of the meal. I had ordered water with ice, which had completely melted, and honestly wished I had ordered something else because there was never an opportunity to ask. At that point, it felt like we had once again been forgotten. A different manager eventually came over and apologized again. He offered to pay for our dinner, which was an incredibly generous gesture and very much appreciated. The whole situation was a little awkward because we could see staff at the front discussing the situation and looking over at our table, but then no one actually came back to check on us. When we were ready to leave, I finally got up and asked if there was anything we needed to do before leaving. Thankfully, the manager confirmed everything had been taken care of. I really have to give credit to the restaurant managers for recognizing the situation and doing their best to make it right. We have eaten here several times before and the food has consistently been excellent, especially the tamales. Because of our previous experiences and the way management handled this situation, we will definitely be back. Hopefully, this was just an unfortunate one-off experience because La Casa del Tamal truly has amazing food.

What a wonderful hidden gem! It doesn't look like much or even very big from the outside. Don't let that fool you. It was great food, great service, huge portions, and we were in and out quick. They turned over tables fast and more people kept coming in to eat. We were surprised how busy it was on a Monday night! The whole place was full - every table! I had a chicken fajita burrito with a strawberry marg and my husband had the chili verde. Fresh ingredients, homemade food and sauces. I ordered a Barbacoa Burrito for takeout and the food was nicely packaged up in to-go containers. First look, the serving size was great for what you pay for. Additionally, the presentation was great, with a variety of different sauces and toppings with the burrito--they also had extra homemade sauces on the side which tasted great. After taking my first bite, my evening lit up with the excellent flavor of the food. Since it was a good serving size, I felt full and also satisfied with the taste. My food was delivered via UberEats, so service and ambiance not a factor, the food was delicious and I highly recommend! Honorable mention--they had legitimate fried tortillas!

We found Tarahumara on Yelp and the reviews looked good and it was still opened so we decided to call in our order for pick up. The restaurant is located in a plaza so there is plenty of parking around. It was almost closing time so no one was inside. Pollo asada burrito (3/5): This was okay. The chicken didn't taste grilled? Maybe the flavor got lost in the burrito and sauce. Maybe I am too spoiled with California mexican food. I don't know what it was smothered with on the outside but it tasted like I was eating a pizza with the red sauce and melted cheese. They have a sauce and salsa bar where you can grab as much as you want. The salsa was spicy but good. I also got the creamy chipotle sauce and it was definitely spicy. The order sat at the counter for a bit because we weren't sure if it was ours. The order came with chips as well.

The staff was friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was very clean. First of all, Muertos Cantina is a total vibe! The inside is so cool with fluorescent lighting, colorful decor and bottles displayed beautifully behind the bar. Even the bathrooms are worth mentioning! Each one is decorated differently with tons of bright colors. Seriously, each bathroom is like its own little fiesta sanctuary. Now for the FOOD! They start you off with fresh tortilla chips and a trio of salsas, and the chips were AMAZING (especially the flour chips). Each salsa had its own completely different flavor. The Red Chile Arbol had some heat, the Chipitle Lime Crema was smooth & creamu, and then there was the milder Tomatillo Verde, which was my favorite. Soooo good! We also tried the Agua Frescas. They were refreshing, flavorful and really pretty to look at. The watermelon was probably our least favorite, but to me anything watermelon flavored can sometimes taste a little watered down. The pineapple was definitely the winner because it was way more flavorful and satisfying. Then came the Elote Corn Dip. YUMMY! It had fire roasted corn, cheese, spices, crema, pico de gallo, cilantro and Tajín. It had so much flavor and texture. Definitely one I would order again. My daughter chose the Birria Ramen, and I think this might have been her favorite part of the meal. It had slow cooked beef birria, consommé, melty cheese and ramen noodles with cilantro and red onions, plus lime and radishes on the side. It had a little spice to it and was absolutely packed with flavor. She loved it! My husband ordered one of their burritos with a side of tater tots. The kid in him was VERY happy that tater tots were an option. And FYI the burritos here are HUGE. I ordered the Smothered Spicy Chile Verde Burrito, and OMG. It had braised pork in chile verde sauce with rice and refried black beans, wrapped in a flour tortilla and then smothered with MORE chile verde, melted cheese and chipotle lime crema. It was MASSIVE and SO GOOD! I honestly have yet to find anything in Reno that compares to this one. I would order it again in a heartbeat. And whatever you do, SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT! We got the churro beignets, and they were fantastic. Covered in cinnamon sugar and drizzled with caramel and condensed milk... seriously, what more do you need? They were the perfect way to finish the meal. Muertos Cantina ended up being such a great first stop on our Utah trip. Fun atmosphere, really good food, huge portions and so many different flavors. Again the atmosphere set the entire vibe for our meal. Yelp came through for me again!

The food is still very good here and some of my previous gripes are no longer an issue. I can now order tacos and burritos à la carte again. While there is still no way to go pick whatever salsa I want and the options are still more limited than before, at least they bring out 3 of my favorites with the chips now. The drinks are still just okay , a shadow of their former selves and I will never be able to accept the loss of my beloved watermelon margarita, the way they used to make it, but I will concede the drinks are decent. Service was fine. Parking is a hassle but that's just Sugarhouse. ‍ So yeah, I guess I'm back to "willing to eat here once in a while", from "I'm never eating here again". They even have a nice taco Tuesday deal which I may hit up in the near future.

Unfortunately, our experience with our server, Letty, completely changed our opinion of this restaurant. There were two main issues that made our visit frustrating: 1. We did not receive our drinks until after our food arrived, and we actually had to remind our server that we were still waiting on them. When Letty brought out our food, we politely asked about our two cokes and were told, "Give her more time." We felt we had already been very patient and only asked after our food had arrived. Waiting for drinks while eating a meal was frustrating, especially since the restaurant was not busy and was actually starting to slow down during the last hour we were there (around 8-9 PM). 2. While we were eating, Letty refilled our water and the table next to us, then continued having a long conversation with the neighboring table while standing very close to us. It felt like we were being completely ignored, and the lack of awareness for our personal space made it difficult for my husband especially to comfortably enjoy his meal. We understand that everyone has busy shifts, but the level of attentiveness and service we experienced was disappointing. We left feeling frustrated and unlikely to return after this visit and would NOT recommend this place to anyone.
