Went here for my birthday dinner and it was amazing! The restaurant is beautiful, perfect for a rainy March evening. The owner talked us over the menu and shared the story behind the restaurant. I adored the handwritten recipes on the wall that were featured as artwork. The cocktails were amazing, the duck was so good I almost cried. The bar took a while to give us our drinks so we got a complimentary dessert which I gladly would have paid for. For a Sunday morning brunch, this a cute quaint little place. Very modern inside and super clean. We came right when they opened at 10:30. Not many people but still might be worth having a reservation later. Honestly, the food was okay. I started with a tomato basil soup - it had an interesting texture and flavor. I didn't really fully enjoy it, but it was doable to continue eating it. It had a strong cheese flavor - like a feta? It just wasn't what I expected. My friend and I also ordered chicken fried chicken and being a southern restaurant, it was lacking flavor. When the waiter brought our food, he even asked if we wanted salt and pepper. It really needed some extra flavoring for me to love it. In comparison I love Cheevers chicken fry. The potatoes, although ALMOST done, I would have preferred it cut smaller so there would be some crispiness to it as well as flavor and being done. Overall, still a cool place for brunch but the food didn't wow me as much as I expected with the type of cuisine they offered. The meal was good flavor wise but could use some additional contrast to help the flavors pop. The winners were: 1. the Bluepoint fresh oysters served on a bed of fine salt with horseradish, lemon, and tobasco, and, 2. the peach hand pie with the exquisite flavor of the peach ice cream. Also had the fried chicken, ahi tuna, and the pimento cheese ball which were well executed but could have use something more to fully elevate the dish. The fried chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, seasoned just right with so much flavor in every bite. You could tell it was cooked fresh. Lorena is an absolutely beautiful restaurant. The ambiance is great, the music was upbeat, and the food was delicious. Deviled eggs were good, but there was only the tiniest piece of ham on each one. The Caesar was hands down the best Caesar I have ever had. Charred romaine, smoked oyster dressing, and croutons that were light, but packed with flavor. For entrees we had the featured skillet with prime rib, and the chicken fried steak. Both were fantastic. The gravy on the chicken fry was excellent, and the skillet entree was equally as great with the poached eggs and fire roasted peppers and onions. For dessert we had the banana pudding. Served in a beautiful little glass jar, and packed with flavor. Huge chunks of banana and a nice layer of macadamia nuts at the bottom. Service was very slow. It took about 10 mins to be greeted, and there was just no second gear. A sense of urgency goes a long way. We could have cut down our dining time by 30-40 mins had things moved at a more appropriate pace. Server asked if we'd like cracked pepper, I said yes, she came back 5mins later with a pepper mill...there was a pepper mill right next to our table. Took our card for payment then proceeded to take the order on a 7-top. Little things to prioritize and tweak do matter. Updating my review after several more visits. We come here often for brunch, and overall, it's a solid brunch spot. The steak & eggs are consistently good and cooked to my liking. I usually opt for scrambled eggs, which tend to be overcooked, so maybe I'll just stick to fried eggs. The shrimp and grits are another favorite. We've also been back for dinner and tried the chicken & dumpling, which was very flavorful and comforting with thick, hearty noodles. The fried chicken dinner was just okay. Today was our 2nd time going to Lorena. The first time we went on a Sunday at 11:00, place was empty, asked for a table for 2, hostess inquired if we had reservations to which we replied no. At this point hostess seems very confused, I inquire if there's a problem and was told "yes, we have reservations coming in and there's nowhere to seat you." Fast forward and my son booked Lorena as a Mother's Day dining experience for today. We arrive on time, approach hostess and we are told it's going to be a few minutes. 2 other parties arrive after us (same number of guests as our party) and they are seated right away. We are then told that they are cleaning a table for us. Table was in our view and there was no sense of urgency in getting it cleaned and set up. We get seated 30 minutes after our reserved time. Waitperson did not seem friendly. We finally ask if we can place our order after being seated for half an hour. When asked if we had any questions one of our party asks to know more about a dish and was met with a very stoic "it's a vegetarian plate." Food comes out and my plate is missing one of the things the menu lists as being on my plate and we are not checked upon during the meal. Food was bland and disappointing. I really wanted to like Lorena but frankly will never return there due to the manner in which we were treated both times, the lack of service and the quality of our dishes. read more

I have been seeing some reviews for Lorena, and it looked like a place I should try very soon. I went with a group of friends, and we very much enjoyed our experience here. The servers took great care of us, making recommendations and answering questions. The starter portion of the menu had several items we wanted to try, but we decided on the skillet biscuits and the pimento cheese ball. Both were excellent. I loved the apple butter on the biscuits and the firecrackers served with the cheese ball. It was tough to decide on an entree not because there were many great options, but because there were only eight choices, and many of them just didn't look like something I would want. So we each chose a different soup/salad/app for our entree, and we all enjoyed our selection. I will say that I got a to go order of the fried chicken to take home, and my husband loved it. So all the food was good, but I would have liked to have seen a few more entree options. Nevertheless, it was a delightful experience, and I am sure I will be recommending it to others. read more

Lunch with a friend at Lorena. We were hungry for Italian and went to Stella's, but they are not open for lunch so we went next door to Lorena, their sister restrauant. Lorena is a modern restrauant that serves traditional Southern culinary dishes with a contemporary twist. We started with fried green tomatoes. They were good and we enjoyed them. I ordered the fried bologna sandwich. I had not had fried bologna sandwich in years and this one was very good. I did not care for the potato salad, wish I had ordered chips. My friend ordered the Cast Iron Akaushi Burger. It comes with Martin's Dutch sesame potato bun, natty lite mustard, and Duke's mayo spread, Cooper sharp white cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, sweet onion. It was excellent. Ohh my lanta the food and service is superb! We ordered the mussels, biscuits, pimento cheese ball, and pot roast Benedict. The Benedict needed some salt but that is a personal preference. Our second visit to Lorena was another winner. This time we tried the fried green tomatoes which were delicious. I especially enjoyed the accompanying sauce. These would be the perfect addition to drinks with friends after work. There were six slices and we had six guests so it was a great match. We also ordered the pimento cheese ball for the table which was a huge hit on our last visit. It was just as tasty this time as it was on our last trip. The entrees this visit were almost identical to the first so look at my first review for other dishes. My husband and I made new choices. He had the catfish which were delightful little strips of fish; light, tasty and perfectly cooked. I was most interested in trying the pickled green tomato tartar sauce. The portion was too small and the taste not as remarkable as I expected, although my husband liked it. I will definitely order the catfish next time but ask for more sauce, or maybe just catsup. I started with a cup of the black pepper clam chowder. It was a good cup of soup but not something I'd order again. I ordered the Teres Major steak for my entree. They recommended medium rare and I asked for medium but it just seemed overcooked. That made it not as good as it could've been. The rice was delicious and the beignets were an interesting play on hush puppies. I would order it again and go with their recommendation of medium rare. I ordered the angel food cake for dessert and my husband (and several others) ordered the peach hand pies with peach ice cream. Both were delicious but the peach pies were the better choice. I was super excited to try this place. When you first walk in, there are many different areas to sit and dine with a home-y, welcoming vibe. It took about 25 minutes for us to be seated, have our order taken and receive water. Atmosphere: 5/5 The food was a different story. We ordered the fried chicken meal and the pork chop meal. The fried chicken was compared to that of "college cafeteria chicken" with a small side of mashed potatoes and green beans. The Duroc Pork Ribeye I had such high hopes for. The first bite was good but pretty charred. The second bite was the realization that my pork was incredibly overcooked, no give or moisture from the chop. The baked potato wasn't terrible, definitely didnt taste the white cheddar. The peach compote on top of the pork was the star of the show. Fried Chicken meal: 3/5 Pork Chop meal: 1/5 After sending the chop back, I was offered for my meal to be taken off of the bill and a salad. The grilled Caesar was tasty! Five for service and atmosphere. This was a very chill place to dine (and we were there for almost two hours because we were sampling a lot of things). Our server was amazing and hilarious. Very attentive (and did I say she was entertaining as well). Most of the appetizers were good and some were stellar. Here's my take on them in order of excellence: the pimento cheese dip, the okra fritters, the deviled eggs, and the fried green tomatoes. The spiced saltines that came with the pimento cheese should be offered as an appetizer themselves. Delicious. The sauce with the fritters was great. The deviled eggs were solid like Grandma would make. The fried green tomatoes were good (with another great sauce). Our table tried the catfish, the shrimp and grits (with pork belly), and the quail with the mac 'n cheese. I only sampled the catfish and I would totally order that again. Actually, I saw the fried chicken being delivered to another table and that is what I would order definitely. The desserts were great. Tried the banana pudding and the angel food cake. The strawberry Nestle's Quick sauce was beautiful as was the chocolate butter cream. (The picture does not do that sauce justice. It was a beautiful pale pink.) This was my first time trying Lorena, I stopped in randomly for brunch, and glad I did! I found out it's owned by the same person behind Stella's, so I had a feeling it would be good. The staff was super kind and welcoming right from the start. The atmosphere is a bit more upscale than I was expecting for a casual brunch spot, and they even had specials of the day. I ordered the Wagyu sandwich special for lunch and thought it was a tasty wholesome meal. The only downside was that the food took a little while to come out, but overall it was a nice experience. Finally! An "upper scale" southern home cooking place. It was delicious. I had the duck and ate all of it. we had the mini biscuits for an appetizer with homemade jam... so, so, so, good! AND they have outdoor seating. My only suggestion is the happy hour being available wherever you sit. Currently, you cannot get happy hour prices unless you are sitting AT the bar (or bar area). I am 100% sure I posted a review of Lorena before but maybe it got wiped. During that visit, I got to meet the owner Lori Burton, who also owns Stella Modern Italian Cuisine next door, and who also told me she named the restaurant after her grandmother. I think I also ordered a sandwich or the shrimp and grits during lunch then. This time I just got several of the soups, appetizers and brunch items. Amazing service from Ash (there are two Ashley's and she goes by Ash). She was able to whip up a mean Arnold Palmer for me. I got all of the soups - tomato basil, chicken dumplings and clam chowder - and they were all excellent. Also got the Coke float (vanilla ice cream + Coca-Cola), which comes with peanuts and which I distinctly remember I got last time. The berry salad was great, as was the fried okra bits. The deviled eggs were also awesome. Interior dining environment very cool, nice windows, and gorgeous bar with a private dining event that you can reserve for events (they also cater them as well). We enjoyed a great meal with another couple this evening at Lorena. This place is newly opened and has a fresh clean look and upscale vibe. We arrived 30 minutes early than our reservation time but were still able to be seated as it was pretty early for dinner. Our waiter was Wesley and he was so friendly and attentive and was knowledgeable about the menu and offered suggestions. All the food was plated well with a nice presentation. See my photos! With the exception of the Local farm salad, everything else hit the mark earning 5 stars! I missed getting pictures of the mini fried peach pies with peach ice cream or the banana pudding. This is an awesome new concept from the folks at Stella! Who doesn't love southern food? My party was a teeny bit late to our reservation, but they were super kind and accommodating. The vibes of the restaurant are very cool and modern. And our server was so great. She explained the dishes well and made good recommendations. The appetizers are definitely the best part of the menu. I loved the pimento dip with spicy crackers and housemade chips probably the best! But the fried green tomatoes and okra fritters were also amazing. I thought the deviled eggs were just okay. My cocktail was the Bayou Float, and it was unlike anything I've ever tried. Sweet southern and delicious. It even had chocolate chips in the bottom! Desserts were delicious as well. I thought I'd love the classic banana one, but the angel food cake was best! That strawberry Quik englaise and chocolate buttercream were dreamy. My sadness was my pick of entree. I thought I'd try the Mac & cheese stuffed quail because it said it was spicy. Nothing was spicy at all. And my quail seemed a bit overcooked. Stuffing it with Mac & cheese is a very neat idea, but it just got dried out a bit. Everything is so unique, creative, and innovative, so I still have to give 5 stars. I'd just try a different entree next time or get 5 appetizers!!! Great new find for the midtown area. Opened a little over a month ago. Came in about 20 minutes before close (oops I was one of those people) and had to wait for the staff to notice me at the host stand. But once I was shown to a table, the service was superb. They have a smaller menu (perfect) which told me they focus on quality vs quantity. And that they did. Stated with a craft cocktail which was darn good (had 2). Then the farm salad and the steak entree. While I did show up just before they closed for the evening I never felt rushed. Can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu. read more

It tasted more like hushpuppies. Ok but I would not get it again.
