They don't have any selection here at all! The rude staff doesn't help anybody but the regular old guys who sit there and drink coffee all day and by 9 AM they're sold out of all of their donuts except for the stale crunchy donut that suck. This place has certainly gone downhill. And what are you gonna use all those premade boxes for if you don't have any donuts? read more

People in the area seem to like the place and they sell out daily. I wanted to really like it but I didn't care for the donut I got. I got a maple iced one instead of a long John because they were out and I felt like I could taste the lard in the donut. I'll give it another try another time. The people are nice and it's a cute little spot. Definitely a local place. One of my best friends and her kids also love it here. read more

I was just telling a friend about the Looney Baker and that they have my favorite donut ever. So I decided to see if they were still in business and I'm thrilled that they are. I left Highland Twp in 1986 but I still count their donuts as the best. I was a Township Trustee back then and I would take my son there on Saturday mornings for hot cocoa and donuts...he would help fold boxes while I talked to my constituents. Use to live near the Livonia location, but now love near the Highland location. Called ahead before stopping by to see if they had any apple fritters left (it was early Friday afternoon and I know they sell out quickly). Employee agreed to hold one for me until I came in a while later - excellent customer service! When I arrived, I decided to pick up a few more sweets - Got a glazed donut, apple fritter, caramel apple croissant, and cinnamon roll all for $5. Everything was fresh, moist and melted in your mouth. The croissant was a bit over cooked which made the outside crust a bit hard but the filling tasted like apple pie. Highly recommended for not only great fresh donuts, but reasonable prices for a bakery setting. read more

Good, but not great. I'm kinda torn between giving it three or four stars because I know the Looney Baker has been better than what I experienced this last time, but I'm going to just go with it and rate it based on what I saw first-hand last week. We stopped in for some pastry at 12:30 and the place was nearly cleaned out of baked goods. Seriously, at noon? The staff didn't seem to be in much of a rush to make more and it kinda seemed like they were just going to coast through the rest of the day (until 6 p.m., I believe) on what they had left. I even asked if they were making anything else and the guy standing behind the counter brushed my question off. Well, okay then! Like I said, there wasn't much left to order at noon, so we picked a few cream cheese and custard filled pastries to go. The selection was limited, but they had a few that looked like winners. To be honest, the custard-style pastry was kinda dry and tasted like it had been left over since the day before, although I'm sure it wasn't (they open early around 4:30 a.m. every morning), but it wasn't really fresh and was lacking in custard filling. The other pastries were okay, particularly the apricot pastry. That one was pretty decent and I would've ordered more of that type, but it was the only one left. What a pity. I was jonesing for some decent coffee or a cappuccino (I mean, what bakery worth its salt doesn't have good coffee to go with their donuts, right?), but they only had a commercialized "gas station-type cappuccino" out of a dispenser for $1. I don't know, but I doubt that "gas cap" would've truly tasted anything like Salted Caramel Cappuccino as it said. I passed on it. There wasn't even any regular coffee made. Weird. As for the service, well, it has been better and definitely should have been better on this day. The guy that waited on us acted like we were an intrusion, to an extent, and was a bit gruff. I don't remember the service being so non-cordial the last time I picked up donuts. Perhaps we came in on an off day or something, I'm really not sure. At any rate, the pastry was kinda stale and not quite up to snuff and the service didn't rate. Oh, and outside on the door, there were signs plastered all over the place announcing prices would be raised throughout the bakery on March 1st (we were there a few days before). One of the nicest things about Looney Baker has been their consistent quality and low prices, but it looks like the prices won't be quite as nice after this week. I don't know how much they're going up, but hopefully the quality will go up again along with the bottom line. It was rather weird because I've gotten really good donuts and breads from Looney Baker before, with excellent service, too, but this experience was just a little off. read more

My husband and I will set alarms to be up at 430 to get in the car just for the doughnuts and bagels here. It's delicious as well as fast, and their pastries are HUGE compared to everything else around highland. I love them forever. read more

Everything was so good, and way better than the chain stores even though they didn't look as "perfect." I've lived in the highland area since birth ('81) and the Looney Baker has been a staple for decades that fails to disappoint. Yeah, there's no glitz or glam, and the selection might be small, but it's a community meeting place that ties us together. Oakland County police can be seen early in the AM having a cup of coffee at the table, and the regular old-timers can be seen chatting it up on the other side. Apple fritters are still my number one donut, and second in line is the plain glazed. Add that and a good cup of coffee and you have your usual morning start. Don't be discouraged at some of the negative, because they're not aware of what we DIDN'T have before Highland built up to what it was. Back in the mid 80's and early 90's? You said "Looney Baker" to any Highlander and they knew just what you were talking about. That, and D's Cafe. read more

The best peanut doughnut ever. Looney Toons dolls and posters have replaced the smoke and cops that used to frequent this joint which is not my favorite, but it doesn't take away from the great doughnuts. Opens real early and everyone is very friendly. read more

Super disappointed in their lack of masks and gloves. I bought a donut but can't decide if I should even eat it.

The donuts are good but the filling in the long johns is next to non existent. It's best to get there very early because afternoon there isn't anything left. Besides the donuts, the woman behind the counter that waited on me was extremely unfriendly never said Hi or thank you. Actually she acted as if I were an inconvenience. Poor selection in this dark empty bakery. I wanted to support a local bakery, but they are just not what I'm used to. Single muffins wrapped in plastic wrap on big trays scream out that they aren't fresh. We wanted 2 apple fritters but they only had 1 at 8am on a Sunday. I doubt I'll ever go back. read more

After wanting to stop at this bakery for several years thinking it was the same as the one in Livonia, let me just say it was a highly disappointing experience. The chocolate donuts had no flavor and the donut holes actually crumbled into pieces when you bit into them from being dried out and the custard sticks were dry as well. Then, I looked at my receipt and they charged a 4% service fee for using a card to purchase. That may have been my fault as there may have been a sign posted regarding that, but I don't recall seeing one offhand. I have had way better donuts than this place and will not go back. Knapp's Donuts in downtown Rochester and in Troy beat the pants off this place. The ones I had from the Livonia Looney Baker were fantastic as well. I stopped in this bakery this morning to buy a dozen doughnuts. I counted over 13. I asked for a dozen and the mean lady behind the counter said "I dont have a dozen" She told me to go to Meijers or Dunkin Doughnuts. When I told her I would take what she had left, she got extremely upset and started throwing doughnuts in the box. I asked why she was so irrated and she whipped around and said GREAT! NOT what it used to be. I can remember coming here as a little girl with my Dad. Back then my parents had one vehicle and we would drive my Dad to work. Each morning my dad would cradle my sister and I up in his arms from our beds and take us to the back seat, still wrapped in our blankets for the ride. Every morning we would stop and The Looney Baker. My Dad would take one of us (usually whoever wasn't still sleeping) in with him while my mom waited in the car with the other. They were so kind and friendly. They would write "Hi Ruth" on my moms cup with a smiley face, knowing she was in the car waiting. Now... the service is sterile. Its covered it old, outdated cartoon characters. (let it go, it's horrible). The coffee is still pretty good but it needs some "mama and pops" local community feel back in it. Needs a good overhaul, but not in the modernized, trendy or chic fashion. read more

Can't believe how horrible the experience was. I wanted to get doughnuts for a few co-workers. I asked for 2 cinnamon rolls that were behind the counter. The woman working said "those are hard, you don't want those" so I then asked for another type of doughnut. The women reached for them and said "sorry those a hard too" instead of pulling them from the shelf the women just placed the doughnut back down on the shelf.
