Really terrible way to start the morning. The worst part is the employees watched us get harassed then had the nerve to thank the man as he left. Allowed a pregnant woman to be scolded for sitting in an open chair! I thought after he left an employee would apologize or at least tell us of course a pregnant woman and her toddler are welcome in the cafe - this did not occur. My husband was looking forward to visiting this coffee shop, we walked 10 minutes out of our way to get there. Only two chairs remained in the entire place, luckily they were next to each other. I am 20 weeks (visibly) pregnant. I sat and my husband parked our one year old's compact stroller next to me. We saw a backpack on the table across from us but we planned to only grab cups of coffee therefore we did not intend to use the table and did not want to stay more than 15 minutes. As we were discussing what to order a tall, grown, forty-something man came over with his hot coffee and shook it around in the air as he exclaimed, raising his voice for the entire cafe to hear, "Wow! Love you guys, aren't you all cute! Well I actually haven't been able to sit in this seat for months! Not that you care I was really looking forward to it but no, you go right ahead and TAKE IT!   My husband tried to tell him he could sit there & I tried to acknowledge his upset as we saw his backpack there but it's the only seat and we won't bother you or your table. Our existence had already offended him. As my husband said "sorry but.." This older man yelled, "Well you should be!" He waved to the employees, "ok, thanks!" To which they replied, bye, thank you! After the employees ignored us and thanked him, we decided not to spend money in an establishment that supports the aggressor and chooses not to offer families a safe space to drink their lattes.  This man took a patio seat outside and as we walked on the sidewalk past him he let out a loud, angry spitting noise at us. At this, I realized, maybe the employees were afraid of such an unstable grown man. Unfortunately, that did not excuse them saying nothing to us after he walked out; or even as we started to walk out. read more

Stopped here for breakfast on our way home from the beach. Definitely a little bit of a wait with a line out the door but the baristas got our order very quickly and even gave an extra bagel for a very slight mix up which we appreciated! The bagels were great and they had amazing looking pastries behind the counter as well. They have so many syrup options if you like flavored coffee and even a few different sugar-free options which is more than Starbucks offers! This is definitely our new favorite coffee shop in town. As far as coffee shops go, this one is a little far for me to frequent. However, the seating is ah-may-zing, and I will definitely make the trek out here for the comfy couches to hang out on and do work. There are a lot of fun drink options as well, though I think the plain black coffee is just average. This is a great stop in the downtown Gloucester area with lots of other stores to wander around near it. There's really only street parking around here, but it's not too hard to find a spot. This is my favorite local coffee place in Gloucester. Whenever I'm home, I make sure to go at least once a day. The coffee is great-- they have a ton of specialty flavors and delicious add ons. There's a cute sitting area, too. This isn't Starbucks, though! Sometimes there's a line of other locals trying to get their gourmet coffee on. By far, the best cappuccino I have ever been blessed with. Came here with my son Charlie, and was created with a polite, cheerful staff. The atmosphere is colorful with the wares of local craft makers, and the air fragrant with the rich, powerful roasted beans. This aroma - reminding me of better days with my late lovely wife - had my mind craving for a velvety, frothy treat. My Son Charlie could feel my anticipation as we approached the counter. Charlie knew what was on my mind and what I was longing for. We approached the counter - Charlie and myself. Greeted by young man. He was dark and mysterious, legs wrapped in tight black denim fabric, hair long, angst and edge strong. You could feel his glowing aura. Charlie and I felt a connection with this man - his enthusiasm for great java and a sadness that sits deep inside. Charlie ordered for him self and me - two cappuccinos, thick with foam and made with care. The dark presence behind the counter lit up with excitement. Charlie and I knew we were in the right place. The slender man got to work. Grinding the beans, tamping the filter, frothing the milk, all with precision. I watched him pore the espresso into a mug, followed by a slash of creamy milk, and topped with a heavy head of foam (just how Charlie and I like it). We took our mugs to table, jaw agape by the impressive precision we had just witnessed. We sipped, we enjoyed. Best cappuccino I have ever been blessed with. The Lone Gull is like a breath of fresh air when it comes to smaller coffee houses on the North Shore. With an ever-revolving list of specialty coffees, and now an expanded menu that includes panini sandwiches, plus an array of delicious breakfast staples and bakery goodies, it's hard to beat the Lone Gull. The staff is great, and have never messed up my order. Depending on how busy it gets, they're cordial, friendly, and chatty. The line can be long, but that's a testament to how awesome the place is. Tip- go in during mid-day to early afternoon and you'll avoid the going to/leaving work crowds. I used to go to the Lone Gull every day when I lived just up the street. Now, not as often because I just don't find myself in the West End portion of downtown Gloucester. You seriously have to try it though, especially if you're a coffee addict like I am. My buddies and I stopped here for some early morning coffee and pastries before hauling our tails outta town. We got it to go! This cute coffee shop is very bright and clean and we all agreed that this place is a step above the typical Starbucks. There are a few tables and chairs, framed artwork on the walls and some Lone Gull apparel for sale. The baked goods (tiramisu, cakes, scones, & pastries) looked very tempting. The French Roast coffee was strong and had a good robust flavor to keep us going on the job. The blueberry scones (caky texture with frosting) and apple turnover were very good with our coffees. Great coffee!! My latte was awesome. The food is ok--they have Jim's bagels and some other items, but nothing too special. This is primarily a coffee joint. There area couple cozy areas to sit, and a bistro table outside if you're lucky. It's a small-ish space, but so nice that Gloucester has a legit coffee joint. I sadly agree with Derek. I visited ONCE a couple months ago, and I was appalled that any coffee shop would have a "one hour limit" - so, if I order three coffees, then what? I actually asked that question - I was told it was an hour - period. BIG WARM WELCOME TO YA THERE.... I agree it was disorganized and while they have a decent atmosphere - I don't wish to be anywhere where I have to watch the clock to make sure I am not going over my allotment of time. I can understand if they were soooo busy that they needed the space, but on subsequent walk-bys when I have looked inside, there have been one or two people - seriously! The ambiance, building, and service get 4 stars. Really comfy chairs, great number of tables, nice people, nice customers, good feel. The coffee gets two stars. I ordered a double lowfat latte, and--though I'm a latte-lover--couldn't finish it. It tasted like it had been made with really old espresso (which, perhaps, it had been). It left a gross aftertaste, too. Three stars seems about fair. Don't go out of your way to check it out, but if you're in town and need a place to chat with a friend, it'll do. read more

Awesome coffee shop in downtown Gloucester. Their coffee and chai are delicious and they serve it up in a speedy and friendly manner. The food selection is small, but the bagel and cream cheese I had was good. I wish they would add more breakfast items such as an egg and cheese sandwich or quiche. The inside is cute and cozy. It's pretty spacious with ample seating. The staff are helpful and seem to be patient and attentive. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area. I wish I was in Gloucester more frequently because it really is a cool town. Seems like Lone Gull would be a great place to cozy up with book and a mug of joe. read more

Lone Gull delivers a subpar cup consistent or worse than the other cafes nearby. The espresso tastes burnt and metallic likely resulting from use of stale beans and a careless barista. The coffee scene on Cape Ann is pretty sad in general and I'm not sure why one has to drive to Beverly (Gusto Cafe) or Ipswich (Little Wolf Coffee) for a decent cup but that seems to be reality. The combination of rude service and stale coffee at Lone Gull will leave a bitter taste in your mouth that can only be resolved by seltzer across the road at CVS. Don't waste your money here. Only Sandpiper Bakery and Caffe Sicilia offer an acceptable caffeine fix if you're stuck on the island. Good luck! read more

We ordered coffee and a latte yesterday afternoon; both were very good (the dark roast coffee was excellent, actually). They get points for serving them piping hot in nice sturdy mugs. We also had blueberry coffee cake, which was very good - a contrast to many coffee shops where the pastries are sad and dried out. The thing I loved most, though, was the quiet, old-timey jazz that was playing on the sound system. I find that so many coffee shops and restaurants don't think about the music they play and it often completely detracts from their environment. At the Lone Gull, it really added to the ambiance and made it someplace I'd like to come back to. read more

What a sweet little place! Since teaching sup yoga in the YMCA pool this winter, I needed a coffee shop in the Gloucester area. A woman pointed to a man in a green cap who was doing laps and said "see him? He did an iron man...and runs the best little coffee shop in town." Sold!! The first time there i drove. Silly me, I could walk from the Y, which makes this place even more inviting after work. I had my favorite: a cappuccino. Perfectly made and they even asked if I liked it "dry" or not. I love that - I love foam but some people tend to only put foam in my cup and I need a little coffee in there. I've only sampled the bagels so far, but they are delicious. I may try a muffin next week to surgery :) The restroom is clean and boasts photos of close up reef sharks, barracuda and more. The photos actually look like home photography (in a good way, I need to ask if the owner also dives, wouldn't be rare in this area and I love fellow divers!!) This place is adorable!! If I ever have more time to stay and write, I'll check into wifi and report back. read more

In the area for work and had some time before my inspection. I found this place on Google maps and stopped in to catch up on emails and reports. The coffee of the week is papa New Guinea which is an amazing brew. Very nice medium body for those that don't know. The place is very cute and has just enough table for me to do down work. I'm a huge fan of Yelp and have been using this for years...LOVE IT! This place must use it too cause there was no pretentious sign although there must have been before because people clearly saw it.
