Highly recommend sitting at the kitchen counter, I loved being able to watch the chefs do their thing. The gumbo oysters were so flavorful and the rice cake grits were so interesting. Overall punchy flavors and really well cooked fish, but hats off to the team for going above and beyond. They heard us debating between what we got and the low country boil, and they surprised us with a mini version of the low country boil to try! It was delicious and I was delighted

    The yuzu cocktail - delicious

Loved our dinner and drinks at Lolas! I forget the name of the drink - something with yuzu in it, extremely refreshing! The food was banger - we got the naan, chicken thighs and bento box. Everything was incredible. Luke behind the bar was so genuine and kind! Cannot wait to come back.

Crispy Chicken Thighs- Pantry pickles, pantry pickles, fermented hot honey, and coconut vinegar. $29. Tasty. Best of the evening

Side note: The menu at this place appears to change pretty often outside of a handful of appetizers and a couple of the mains such as the short rib and chicken so you might not get the same menu as me. In short, I would recommend the Crispy Chicken, the Panzanella, and the Cookie for dessert. First off, shoutouts in particular go to our excellent server as well as the rest of the waitstaff. They went above and beyond in terms of asking questions/confirming things, cleaning stuff, asking if we needed new plates or silverware, and other things. Anyway, this interesting little restaurant off of 5th Avenue opened up a little while ago and I went earlier in the evening with a group. They describe themselves as being Southern and Korean though I would consider this more Southern and pan-Asian. The place inside has comfortable seating and the lighting is a bit dim unless you're all the way in back by where they cook. The food is pretty good though some dishes definitely are a whole lot better than others and the price points can be a bit high. I started with one of their $19 signature drinks; the Leche De Tigre with mezcal and ceviche sauce. This was a unique drink with some smokiness from the mezcal and some herbal flavors from the ceviche mix. It was interesting though I likely would not order it again. Best of the smaller plates was something that someone else ordered which was the Asparagus + Kale Panzanella for $26 with bacon + red onion jam, cheddar, and toasted sourdough. I'm usually not the biggest fan of kale but it worked here with some of it being crisped up for texture. The bits of sourdough added crunch, the cheddar added some saltiness, and it just overall had a nice mix of textures. This was the best bite of the night along with the chicken easily. My appetizer was the Beef + Barley Tartare for $28 with broccolini, gochujang, and sunchoke chips. The tartare had a good texture compared to most with the beef being in larger chopped pieces and the chips added some good crunch. The gochujang added some nice spiciness to the dish though I felt it made the dish a tad salty. It was pretty tasty though a bit pricey. The last appetizer anyone ordered which I tried was the Marinated Beets + Strawberries for $24 with goat cheese, pepitas, and calamansi honey which was alright. The strawberry was unique here though it got a bit overpowered from the goat cheese and beets. The calamansi wasn't really detectable though the dressing was a bit light in general. I just don't think the mix worked too well even if the quality of the ingredients was good. I went with the recommended dish from most other reviewers as my main which was the Crispy Chicken Thighs for $29 with pantry pickles, pantry pickles, fermented hot honey, and coconut vinegar which is the closest thing to a Filipino dish on the menu. The chicken was somewhat similar in terms of texture to Taiwanese popcorn chicken though lacking that distinct and wonderful white pepper flavor and was pretty tender and juicy though there was a lot of batter. The chicken itself was pretty moist and the portion size was pretty large. The pickles on the side were on the lighter side for pickles with the sweetness being similar to Filipino atchara though I prefer the original style as a slaw. The red sauce on the side had a similar heat to the coconut vinegar and I think they worked the best combined to add a proper amount of heat and flavor. This was good and I would recommend it. The rest of the people got the Roasted Short Rib for $39 with caramelized shallot barbecue, charred broccolini, and mushroom ragu. You would expect the dish to be very large based on the price point but as per many photos, it consists of multiple small chunks. While it added a nice presentation, the portion size was therefore a lot smaller than expected. This would be forgiven if the flavor was excellent but I found it to be a bit bland and the piece of short rib that I tried was tough. I wouldn't recommend this. A few people ordered two of the desserts at the end which I had a small nibble of. Better of the bunch was the Brown Butter + Miso Chocolate Cookie for $10 with oolong milk. The waitstaff split up the oolong milk into 6 small glasses which was very nice of them and was pretty tasty with the milk helping to reduce the richness of the cookie. The cookie had a nice mix of textures and was pretty sweet though not cloyingly and the closest comparison especially with the pretzels on top for salt would be a much better version of the Compost Cookie from Milk Bar. It was solid. Interesting and alright was the Sweet Blue Cornbread for $14 with roasted strawberry, rhubarb, and whipped buttermilk. The cornbread had a nice texture and was mildly sweet though there was oddly a lot of ginger inside which others found unpleasant though I didn't have a huge piece. The fruit and buttermilk went with it nicely. This was OK. Out of review room. 3.8

This spot is super cute. We got a table right by the bar seats so we were close to the action. We got most of the items on the menu. The naan, oysters, and pimento cheese to start. All solid. Next we got the panzenella and lettuce wraps. Then the rice cakes, chicken thighs, dumplings, short rib, and striped bass. Everything was delicious but the stand outs were the lettuce wraps and chicken thighs. We finished with the cookie and black forest ham. The milk and cookies and little bits of pretzels were an amazing touch. The service is also really good. At one point I dropped my chopsticks and they replaced it right away before I even picked it up. We'll definitely be back.

it was very much above mid food we got the naan, tilefish, fried chicken, short rib, and cookies naan: surprising good for it having carrots on it and i hate cooked carrots tilefish: an elevated fancy filet o fish with no bread fried chicken: super juicy crispy and flavorful short rib: no no no. no flavor at all and it tasted like beef. need some sort of glaze or sauce cookies: super yummy with oolong milk

50/50 Lola's martini, they made it Vodka (because that is my preference, but didn't expect that I would have an option).

Looked online for places to eat, not realizing at the time I was saving a place that was one of The New York Times 100 best restaurants. Walked over from our hotel and loved the overall vibe, which was busy and welcoming. Our server was so nice, asking dietary restrictions and even my preference of Gin or Vodka for my Lola's Martini (which you can get with lower ABV!). We ordered the beet and strawberry salad because we were curious of how the Calamansi honey would taste, and even though we didn't taste it overtly, the salad was amazing. We shared the crispy chicken and the wild striped bass. Both were delicious and not too heavy, light enough that we ordered a Rhubarb Cosmo to share, and wow, so delicious, with a strong taste of Calamansi citrus. Again, shoutout to our server who talked to us and when I mentioned my birthday offered a sweet happy birthday to me, complimented my bolo tie (of NYC), and we mentioned how much we liked the vinegar with Calamansi and she saved some for us on a tiny plastic container! Amazing! Go here (get a reservation) and sit at a table Or at the beautiful bar at the front of the restaurant or the other bar seating by the kitchen! You wk be delighted by the vibe, the staff, and especially the food and drinks!

LOLA's Overview: My friend and I came here for dinner on a Tuesday night at 5pm. We made a reservation as well and I would recommend doing so since by the time we left it was fully packed. The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice. Very chic but also welcoming. Overall, the food was great. We liked our entrees more than our apps. The entrees were fantastic. Also, I got the fresh cranberry cosmo and it was dangerously delicious! What was ordered: FOOD: beef & barely tartare, marinated beets, local tuna tataki, roasted short rib DRINKS: fresh cranberry cosmo, mezcal old fashioned, yuzu lager Stand outs: Roasted Short Rib & local tuna tataki Would I come back/recommend: Yes - I would go back Yes - I would recommend

    Pimento toast

This was incredible. The naan, pimento toast, fried fish lettuce wraps, and especially the heritage pork were absolutely perfect. We weren't that crazy about the egg noodles and would probably skip that next time. This place is more vegetable forward than I realized going in and next time would lean more in that direction (although the pork and pimento toast were kind of sneaky veggie dishes in their own right). We also liked the chocolate chip cookie for dessert but the real champ was the Black Forest cake.

We had our Valentine's dinner here, and overall, it was a lovely experience with some standout dishes. We actually took a long time to decide and the server was so patient and happy to help explain the dishes to us. Highlights: * Beef Tartare - Hands down the best dish of the night! I loved how they chopped the tartare into mini cubes and mixed it with black barley, which added a nice chewy texture. The sunchoke chips were a great touch, adding some crunch to balance it out. Super creative and well-executed. * Chicken Thigh - This reminded me of Taiwanese popcorn chicken in the best way! The coconut vinegar really helped cut through the oiliness, making it feel lighter and easy to keep eating. The hot honey dipping sauce wasn't really for me, but it might be for others. * Naan & Sauces - The sauces were excellent--carrot masala yogurt and cilantro chutney were both packed with flavor. The naan itself had a strange flavor to me, almost like gas or something charred too much. My husband, on the other hand, thought it tasted great, so maybe it's just personal preference. Just Okay: * Beets salad & Stir-Fried Noodles - Worth trying once, but I probably wouldn't order it again. Nothing bad, just not as memorable as the other dishes. Lola has a great atmosphere and some really creative dishes. While not everything hit the mark for me, the highlights made it worth the visit. Would definitely come back to try more!

Made a visit to Lola's for dinner on Valentine's Day and the food, sommelier, and decor did not disappoint. The oysters, pimento toast, and crispy chicken thighs made an impression.

Stunning food! We walked in for 2 and sat at the bar. It's a chef's counter and you can see quite a bit. We ordered cocktails, the bread and dip, a salad, the farmer's market special, and the chicken. Our server recommended the chicken, and I'd definitely try it if it's your first time! Everything tasted wonderful, and I had some nice acidic and spicy bites. The bread and dip and the salad were all beautiful. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu. Friendly, quick service. Really cool vibe inside, the design was awesome. Nice bathrooms.

So tasty! Have heard great things about the restaurant and finally got to try it. I think reservations are recommended; there is space for walkins but not much. Every dish we ordered really hit the spot. My favorite dish was definitely the chicken thigh, as many others have pointed out. We asked for recommendations, and our server was really helpful in describing pretty much everything on the menu so we can get exactly what we wanted. My friend also tried the pandan cocktail, which tasted great. Honestly kudos to the bartender! We also had the cookie dessert with oolong milk, the milk was actually the better half!

I was in town all-too-briefly producing an event, and I had but one restaurant on my list: Lola's. Coincidentally, the event featured a particular NY Times food writer who just so happened to review Lola's for the Gray Lady, so when I mentioned to her my schedule might deter me from stopping in, well, she looked at me and told me in no uncertain terms that I'd regret it if I missed it. As fate would have it, I was staying a block away at the Ace Hotel. So I managed to eke out 40 blessed minutes on my way to the airport, and walked-in, luggage in tow, to a seat at the kitchen counter at 5:01pm. Said food writer was not wrong -- Lola's is a winner. I'm intrigued by Asian food culture in the American South, and I've read about Chef Suzi Cupps' story and background integrating Filipino cooking with her South Carolina roots. Given her cooking pedigree (Gramercy Tavern, Annisa, Untitled at the Whitney), I had pretty high expectations. But the experience at Lola's starts way before anything hits your tongue - the whole vibe of the place just feels original yet absolutely welcoming. It felt like I'd dropped back into my regular neighborhood haunt in Prospect Heights or Cobble Hill instead of here in the glossy Flatiron district. The service, FOH staff, everything was poised but also very humane, devoid of pretension. Having cautioned the server of my now 37-minute window, I was heartened by his efficiency, though he still managed to make things feel leisurely and unrushed. I quickly landed on the recommended Paraiso Market Salad (and relieved when I was offered a 1/2 portion) and the Roasted Short Rib with shiitake & spring onion ragu, bloomsdale spinach, and blue cornbread (honestly the cornbread sold me), with a Yuzu shrub mocktail -- "don't bother coursing it, just bring it when anything is ready!" What will stay with me is the thoughtfulness and deliberation of it all. Every ingredient was there for a functional reason. From the pretzel crunch in the salad to the densely slippery shrooms in the ragu, Chef Cupps clearly has a thing for textures, and it added a dimension to things that was just, well, fun. And the flavors were pure spring - vibrant, bright, alive. I only wish I had more time to stay for dessert. The kitchen counter is a great place to be: I love watching cooks, and the precision and synchronicity of the crew didn't disappoint. Chef Cupps wasn't on the line that night, but I wish I could have offered her a quick and heartfelt thumbs up. Next time I'm in town I'll be sure to book myself enough time to truly stretch out and explore the menu. Try it. You'll regret it if you don't.

We shared the lobster pasta entree. Tasted more like Mexican goulash. No Italian flavors to be found in the sauce. Never once did the nameless waiter stop and inquire about our meal. Just all around a poor experience and a disappointing Friday night. There are far better places that appreciate your patronage. We will not be coming back. Not worth it.

The front part where you first walk in is the bar area with some tables. This restaurant is on the darker side and brings you back in time. Once you walk in further that is where the main dinning room is. This is also on the darker side as you can maybe tell by my photos. The wall paper and art around the restaurant is cool and there are some monkey statues around the restaurant. I was seated in a corner table in a booth area that seemed to be for at least 2-3 people. I thought for sure they would seat me at the bar area. I had a wonderful waitress whose name I think was Taylor but I could be wrong. I ordered the Monkey bread to start off with. It's a very buttery bread with truffle and parm cheese on top. I have alot of allergies and I was searching online if I could even have truffles as I have a nut allergy. So, I asked the waitress and she said she had never heard this. But, she came back to me and told me that White truffle grows near or like over where Almonds grow from but that, they don't use white truffle so I was all good. Well, this was super nice of her to check for me. I had no idea she was going to do this. She said the restaurant has strict protocols when it comes to food allergies. I then got for my main dish the double cheese burger with onions and pickles. To drink I had the cucumber martini. WOW everything was pretty darn good!! I passed on dessert. We started with drinks, and mine ended up being a surprise standout. I ordered the coconut margarita, slightly hesitant since I'm not usually a margarita fan--but it completely won me over. It struck a perfect balance and leaned just enough into the coconut to make it feel unique without being overpowering. My sister-in-law, who's pregnant, had a non-alcoholic Ritual margarita and loved it, noting how convincingly it mimicked the real thing. Since we were sharing, we got to try a good mix of the menu. The monkey bread came first--definitely a splurge at $34, but it's one of those fun, indulgent starters that's worth ordering at least once. While I wouldn't call it the best bread I've ever had, I also wouldn't change anything about it. The crab rangoon was another highlight. Having it made with real crab made a noticeable difference, and the dipping sauces complemented it really well. It felt like a more elevated take on something familiar. For mains, the French dip was a hit. The meat was incredibly tender, the bread had that ideal crusty exterior, and the au jus was packed with flavor--I was very glad I ordered extra. It pulled the whole dish together. We also tried the smoked whitefish Caesar, which was the only dish that didn't quite land for me. It was a well-made, fresh salad, but the smoked fish flavor was a bit overpowering and took over the balance of the dish. Even though we were too full for dessert, the restaurant surprised us with a scoop of strawberry ice cream with chocolate sauce to celebrate my sister-in-law's babymoon. It ended up being one of the most memorable bites of the meal--we're still talking about how good that ice cream was. We arrived right at 11:45, and by the time we left, the place was absolutely buzzing. It's clearly a popular spot, and for good reason. Between the lively atmosphere, strong service, and well-executed food, I'd highly recommend making a reservation if you can.

Located at MoMA, The Modern is a 2 Michelin star restaurant hosting both fine dining, showcasing Chef Thomas Allan's cuisine, and a more casual dining experience in The Bar Room. The restaurant is gorgeous and has a giant glass wall overlooking MoMA's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, a lovely view. There is an abridged tasting menu of 3 courses, but we opted for the full chef's menu cause we didn't want to miss their signature "eggs on eggs on eggs" and after the supplemental charge, the price was close enough. - Hiramasa and sugar snap peas/crispy ham and cheese--simple and delicious, with the hiramasa being light and fresh and the ham and cheese providing a deeply savory contrast - Chilled lobster, shiso, and green radish--the lobster was cold and sweet but as a personal preference, I don't really enjoy bitter flavors and the slice of lemon under the radish threw it off a bit - Eggs on eggs on eggs--words cannot adequately describe the unctuousness of this dish, it's like eating rich, buttery velvet on a crispy, fluffy log of brioche. As a bonus, they bring you an extra toast to mop up all the tasty bits - Pumpkin seed sourdough and cultured butter--okay I totally didn't know this was meant to be eaten with the next dish so given total lack of self control in the face of pillowy fresh bread and perhaps the smoothest butter on the planet, I may or may not have eaten it all before the trout showed up... they were nice enough to give us more :') - Sea trout with clams and saffron shellfish broth--the fish was cooked to literal perfection and the clam and saffron sauce enhanced everything even more. This fights with the chicken dish for spot #2 in my favorites of this meal - Heritage chicken, provençal asparagus, vin jaune--this reminds me of the stuffed chicken from Per Se and was cooked just as well. The vin jaune sauce was slightly nutty with an incredibly rich flavor and also went well with the bread - Lamb saddle, romanesco, and lemon poached dates--for some reason I thought the chicken was the final savory course and I did not pace myself at all and was so full by this point. The lamb was tender and the date was a wonderful bite though - Wild strawberries and cacao--I can't remember what was all in this but I loved the little wild strawberries as they were like delicious strawberry gummies - Dark chocolate cremeux, meyer lemon, and espresso--delicious with interesting flavors, I haven't had many lemon, chocolate, and coffee combinations - Mignardises of raspberry, lemon coconut, cherry cheesecake--only one I tried was the cherry cheesecake bonbon but my husband ate 'em all so they must've been good lol The MVP of this meal was the melon lemonade mocktail, made with honeydew, jasmine, and pandan. Might be the most perfect drink for me ever made because it was melony with a subtle floral note from the pandan and jasmine, and only lightly sweet and tart, everything I love. Sooooo good! Service was pretty good up until we wanted to pay, and for some reason it became really difficult to find someone to close us out. We waited almost 20 minutes between the mignardises and finally being able to pay, even actively looking around trying to flag someone down. Despite The Modern not being the most innovative of meals, it's easily one of my all time favorites. I definitely prefer food that's executed well over food that's pushing boundaries, and may be back any time I'm in town.

Their entire operation seemed so incredibly focused, meticulous, and inspiring that we knew we had to try it. We started with the Iberico ham and the hiramasa tart, both incredible. Then came the chilled lobster, which was super fresh and refreshing, served with an amazing sauce that made me want to lick the plate clean. Every dish felt refined without being overly complicated. The service was extraordinary. You can immediately tell the front-of-house team is operating at an extremely high level and is aware of everything happening in the room at all times. At one point, my wife stepped away to use the restroom just as they were about to serve the first course. Without saying a word or making anything awkward, the staff simply looped around a couple of times until she returned. The moment she sat down, they resumed service seamlessly without missing a beat. That level of awareness and professionalism really stood out to us. Next came the rye bread, which was fresh and crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, paired with delicious butter. Then we had the sea bass with crab, which was phenomenal and one of my favorite dishes of the night. But the true star of the show for me was the lamb. My wife and I grill lamb racks often, and I genuinely had no idea this level of perfection existed. It was cooked flawlessly, and the sauce was absolutely incredible. If I was not in public, I probably would have been scraping the bone clean :) Big shoutout to one of the staff members, Stephanie, who completely made our night. We were telling her how excited we were to finally visit after watching the Bon Appétit video, and she casually asked if we wanted a tour of the kitchen after dinner. Honestly, I thought she was joking at first. Then she came back after dessert and reminded us. Even after paying the bill, I still thought maybe she was kidding, but then she walked over smiling and said, "Let's go." My wife and I were completely geeked out. Seeing the kitchen in person was surreal. It was exactly like the video: super meticulous, orders being called out and repeated in unison, everyone moving with total precision and purpose. You could see the Omega clock, the Michelin stars on the wall, and just the overall culture of excellence behind everything they do. We were honestly in awe. Thank you again, Stephanie. That experience meant so much to us. Every time we visit a fine dining restaurant for a special occasion, I always wonder whether it will truly live up to the hype. Some completely miss the mark. Some are very good. But none have delivered on every aspect the way The Modern did. This is officially our favorite restaurant in the world.

They did however seat us at a table that was directly in the way of a lot of movement through the restaurant. Many waiters found themselves squeezing between our table and another to attend to other tables. Some were carrying very heavy looking trays. Beyond that, we had a blast. We ordered the butter service, which was super fun! The waiters make a whole show of it, seasoning the butter at the table, talking it up a bit, and then allowing us to go to town. The added shallots on top bring an extra hit of umami. The chorizo spread was a little grainy for me, but others at the table were going for seconds and thirds. I especially enjoyed the marinated leeks and the eggplant dip it was also served with. Our entrees were a little underwhelming. We ordered the lobster frites and the french onion soup burger. The burger wasn't overtly French oniony. It was just a solidly good burger. The lobster was delicious, but not anything I am continuing to think about. What I am still thinking about though, are the creme brulees! We ordered the corn creme brulee for a side. It was sweet and salty, with a great crack and chew to the top. I also loved the espresso creme brulee for dessert, which also had a nice light saltiness to it. We also got the spicy orange carrots which were totally delicious. In addition to the espresso creme brulee, we also ordered the lemon ice cream cake. It was bright and refreshing. The only downsides were the wait for the desserts. The wait was so long that our waiter insisted that they would be comped for our inconvenience. However, they were still on the bill at the end of the meal. He did remove them immediately when we pointed them out, though. And finally, coat check accidentally gave our Mother's Day bouquet of flowers to the wrong mom! We wound up with a much prettier bunch, but lost our balloon as part of the switch. Oh well! Next time, we'll definitely be ordering the brulees and I'll be damned if I leave without having their french onion soup!

I am writing to share some constructive feedback regarding a recent dinner at Quality Bistro…read more Having been a loyal patron of Quality Meats and Quality Italian for many years, I was eager to experience your take on the French bistro concept. While there were highlights to the evening, several aspects of the experience did not meet the high standards I have come to associate with the Quality Branded family. First, I must address a significant comfort issue two weeks ago. Our group was seated in one of the large booths, and we found that the cushions were so soft that we sank down uncomfortably low. It was quite awkward to dine when several guests could barely see over the top of the table. For a restaurant of this caliber, guest ergonomics are essential, and I would strongly encourage looking into firmer seating support for those booths. Regarding the menu, we found the oysters to be a bit of a letdown for the $5 price point. The citrus toppings were so heavy-handed that they completely overwhelmed the natural flavor of the oyster. Additionally, as a long-time fan of Quality Meats, I found the steak to be lacking in both presentation and precise execution. I had hoped for a dish that mirrored the excellence of your sister properties, but this fell short of expectations. On a more positive note, your staff was incredibly friendly and attentive throughout the night. We also thoroughly enjoyed the bread and butter cart; the butter was truly lovely and stands up well against international varieties I have tried. Furthermore, your desserts are stunning and were the highlight of our meal. I share this because I truly enjoy your restaurant group and would love to see Quality Bistro refine these details to match the world-class experience of your other locations and competitive locations in the neighborhood. I look forward to returning in the future to see how the space evolves.
