My mother in law has been talking about this place for awhile now and we finally decided to stop in. She takes my nephew about every week - she lives within walking distance - and raves about how good it is. She recommended the mexican chocolate but quickly remembered it has cinnamon in it - which is a DEFINITE NO for me...i HATE cinnamon...so I was a little disappointed because I've heard how good it is. I opted for the strawberry and cream and it was pretty good. The hubs got chocolate brownie and loved it. While visiting my mom in Durham I made my mom take me to this shop just based on the look of it! And then again 2 days later. It was great, they have some regular flavors but I had to go for the crazy ones. The Grapefruit basil was ok, not grapefruity enough for me, mango chile was hot and cold at the same time. My favorite was Apricot Chipotle and Latte, both of these are more creamy type pops. Yes, I got 2 pops per visit to Locopops, they were that good. Couldnt muster the cojones to try the Chocolate Bacon pop.... maybe next time! There is some seating inside and out, books and toys for kiddos. Locopops, you're so Durham and I'm pretty sure you do know it. I never knew gourmet popsicles existed when I was growing up (thanks a lot, Mom) but I have since come to enjoy them in my semi-grown up state. Nothing pretentious about this little shop, but don't let the shabby appearance dissuade you from enjoying some frozen goodness. Selections from both the regular menu and the guest stars delicacies are sure to enjoy with my faves being the Mexican chocolate, mojito, and mango chile. Had such high hopes after reading reviews & talking with friends. Sadly, Locopops was a disappointment. We so wanted to love it! A lil tricky to find due to poor signage, but after a quick u-turn & GPS consult, we spotted it. Walked in & was overwhelmed by unpleasant smell, mentioned by another reviewer as cleaning products. My partner in crime said it smelled like a dishwasher. I thought it smelled like a Goodwill store. I had one of the creamy guest flavors, Plum Pink Pepper. The taste worked fine... nice balance of flavors, lovely solid, creamy texture, etc. It was definitely an interesting taste experience, which I enjoy. But it wasn't, er, yummy. Not bad, but not something I'd ever really need to try again. Couldn't actually finish my popsicle... 2/3 of the way through I ran out of enthusiasm altogether. I prefer my dessert to be sweet & delicious, not "interesting". :) My guy tried 2 flavors, Mojito (non-creamy) & Sweet Corn (creamy). Mojito was the best we tried, refreshing & light... definitely mostly lime-flavored. Sweet Corn was just odd in both flavor & texture. As with the PPP described above, it was balanced in taste & not altogether icky, just not super-delicious. Locopops... we so wanted to love you. I may return to try another flavor or 2; perhaps better luck next time? Either way, something needs to be done about the off-putting smell in this place. Very unappetizing. :( read more

We love LocoPops tons! This is a simple but a great place. Each time we drive by, we just couldn't resist stopping here. We have a strategy in ordering different flavors. I get the basic flavor, and my wife orders the fancy one that attracts her eyes. She always ends up eating mine. There is a nice local Durham feel about this place. Great concept, interesting flavours, lots of variety. I didn't try any of the creamy popsicles, but I did try a few of the water-based ones, including: - cherry hibiscus: Delicious! Refreshing! Tastes like tart cherry! - cherry pomegranate: Delicious! Refreshing! Tastes like tart cherry! - strawberry lime: Delicious! Refreshing! Tastes like tart strawberry! In summary, it seems like one flavor tends to overpower the others in their dual flavor combos. My friends tried and reported: - mojito: Tastes just like lime, not so much like mint - mango chile : A rare example where you can taste both flavors - cafe latte: Tastes like coffee ice cream - cookies and cream: Tastes like watery milk - tangerine basil: Tangerine overpowers basil - tangerine pomegranate: Tart tangerine - apple pie: Tastes just like apple pie, complete with chunks of crust Decor is bare and minimal. Just a few freezers and a couple of chairs. This is apparently the way LocoPops likes to decorate, since the location on Franklin Street is even more sparse. It's kind of like they moved into the location and decided to spend $0 on decorating. I'm not complaining though, I do like their fresh-tasting popsicles. I also like how their regular flavors come in large and small sizes (though their seasonal flavors only come in medium). Yes, thats right. Three. Mojito, Jalepeno-Lemonade, and Black Raspberry Mango (or some derivative of those flavors). Quite great, actually. Reminded me a lot of Molly Moons back home in Seattle. Business savvy women starting a place of their own with local sustainability in mind. Locopops serves up some delicious treats for your sweet tooth! I can foresee coming here many more times to try out more of their interesting popsicle flavors. It was a pretty warm day and I was in search of something sweet and cool. I was leaning towards just getting a cup of froyo and then I discovered Locopops was on my way home thanks to Yelp. Popsicles sounded like an interesting alternative to the usual froyo so I decided to pop in. They've got a great selection of cream based or water based popsicles and really creative flavors too. I decided to try a brownie chocolate popsicle and got a mexican chocolate popsicle to take home. I looved the brownie chocolate popsicle-- if you're a lover of chocolate I think you'll enjoy this one. The chunks of soft brownie embedded in the creamy chocolate are just delicious! I'm excited to try the Mexican Chocolate popsicle waiting for me in the freezer when my next sweet craving hits. They had some interesting seasonal flavors too like Apple Pie, Pumpkin Spice, and Chocolate Chile. I'm hoping to visit again soon before they stop selling the Apple Pie so I can try that one! The prices are right and easy on your wallet at $2.25 a pop ;) I like that they sell baby pops so you can get a smaller portion (and it's only a $1.50) too. Can't wait to come back! read more

This is a place that serves ice cream on a stick. That's it. I appreciate it when businesses do one thing and do it well, and Locopops has mastered the art of ice cream on a stick. There are lots of flavors to choose from, including vegan and gluten free options. I had a chocolate brownie popsicle, and my husband got cookies and cream. They were both delicious. The brownie pieces tasted fresh, not like the dense clumps of chocolate you get in store-bought "brownie" ice cream. And for under $5 for two pops, the price was right too. read more

At first, I thought - locopops? What's the big deal about popsicles? Turns out the big deal is that they're awesome. They specialize in paletas - Mexican-style popsicles. Flavors are too many to count, and include common American flavors like cookies and cream, but also a variety of fruits and spices (mango-chili, blueberry, hibiscus, etc). Flavors are either water or milk-based (I prefer the creamy ones myself...my last one was like a liquid brownie...yum), and prices are right where they need to be at $1-2. I visited Locopops for the first time today and I am already looking forward to going back soon to try some more flavors! It was a hot day and I was in the area, so I decided to head to Locopops to cool off. There were lots of interesting flavors to choose from, but I felt like something fruity, so I went with one of their specials of the day, strawberry lemonade. It was very refreshing and very tasty. I think it is cool how they also have pup pops for dogs, next time I will bring my dog to enjoy one. I had three kids with me who all tried different flavors, including cookies and cream (with big pieces of Oreos inside- yum), butter pecan and strawberries and cream. I like that they have different sizes of popsicles available including the baby pops, which are just smaller portions - the perfect size for the 4 year old that was there with me! It's a small shop but they have benches outside as well as tables for days when it isn't too hot. The prices are pretty reasonable. Definitely a nice treat for a hot summer day! read more

There is really nothing not to love about Locopops (especially now that there is another location in Chapel Hill). Cheap, simple, tasty treats done well - that's about it. Don't let that "paleta" name scare you - these are frozen pops you've enjoyed your whole life, just probably not in these flavor combinations. The ingredients are all fresh, and almost all are available in small or large sizes (I recommend getting 2 small pops for the sake of variety). I'm not as daring as some, and mainly stick to the water-based pops (Hibiscus; blueberry nectarine), but I have to say that most everything sounds/looks great. A word of advice - a friend once got a pop with tomato (perhaps a gazpacho pop?) and the tomato skin was not fully pureed, which made eating the pop a bit messy and unappetizing. read more

Locopops sells gourmet popsicles in either milk or water based flavors. They normally have about two dozen varieties that constantly change and range from standard fruits, to specialty Mexican flavors, to more exotic blends. First time I went there with some friends we tried about ten flavors (some were really good--blueberry, and some were just ok--ginger). They are reasonably priced and you can get two sizes of pops. Try some of the daring flavors. Decorations are sparse and there are some either really funny/disturbing/boring drawings on the walls, I can't decide which. But you come here to get the yummy desserts, and Locopops gets the job done. read more

Finally got around to trying these popsicles and I admit to being hooked. Delicious. Their flavors are spot on and they have both standard and rotating selections. Their store-front is a bit sketchy, but the benefit of this business is that they wholesale to numerous markets and restaurants around Durham - Nana Taco, Foster's, Co-Op, etc. etc. So really, you don't even ever need to go to the store itself to enjoy these. I recently got a chance to stop in to this heralded local establishment. I was admittedly leery of how much one could actually do with a Popsicle, but after a couple of trips in I'm a believer. Locopops is a very fun concept: natural ingredients, wide and expanding variety of flavors, and a unique product. All of that comes together for a mouthwatering taste that can briefly return the biggest of kids to summer times spent chasing the ice cream truck. I've tried two flavors so far: mojito and cookies 'n' creme. Both were quite tasty. This spot is nestled in what has become the fine foods hot spot of Chapel Hill. It is a secluded square set on Franklin Street. A great treat, no matter the season. read more

This is not the Locopop store I remember. Today I brought my fam who was visiting Durham here. From what I remember, Locopops were creamy and delicious. I ordered the strawberry pina colada pop and it tasted like flavored water. When I went in to inquire about my locopop and why it didnt taste creamy as I remembered, the cashier was nonchalant and said that the pop I ordered was water based. No where on their menu does it say that. On top of that, she attempted to charge me $2.75 to exchange the pop for something I ACTUALLY WOULD ENJOY. Locopops strikes me as quintessentially Durham, and I often take visitors from out of town to this place to show them what Durham is about. It's great to see people from different backgrounds congregate and happily lick their popsicles. I like the kind of grungy vibe of the Hillsborough Rd location, too. I have to give it only 4 stars, though, because Nashville's Mexican popsicle mecca, Las Paletas, was superior. (Sigh. I miss that place so much). Locopops, in comparison, have a grittier texture, and are often too icy/hard, snapping off into crunchy chunks with each bite. The pops from Las Paletas were smoother and slightly softer, which I preferred. The Locopop flavors are also hit-and-miss. The crema and agua standards, especially the Mexican Chocolate and Cookies-and-Cream, are pretty good. A lot of the guest flavors were, well...rather flavorless. I have frequently picked up an exotic-sounding pop with almond milk or lavender or green tea or whatever, only to find...that I didn't taste much other than ice when I bit into it. Meh. Again, I never struck out with Las Paletas; all of their pops were bursting with flavor, even rose petal and other funkier flavors. I'm a frequent customer and it's one of my favorite hangouts in Durham, and the pops are mostly good, but...not the best. read more

You can find Locopops in all sorts of businesses around Durham and at a lot of events, but there's something charming about going to the store, especially the original location. It's not in the most picturesque area of town, but it does have a few nice tables outside which are perfect to enjoy your popsicles at. A lot of the reviews rave about the Mexican chocolate, so I want to put in a good word for the water-based flavors! They're a bit better for you than the cream ones, and are honestly just as good! They are fruity and delicious without making you feel guilty. And, as much as you think eating a bright red popsicle will stain your mouth, it will really only make your lips a bit rosier--none of their popsicles have the effect of making you look like a kid in a candy store with a blue or green or red tongue! They aren't cheap, but considering all the other types of desserts you can go out for--frozen yogurt, cupcakes, Ben & Jerry's, etc.--they aren't expensive either, especially for how good they are! read more

If you have heard of Locopops and are looking for a reason to finally go try it out, I'm giving you permission to drop $2 on a popsicle that will change the way you look at the freezer aisle in your local grocery store. Locopops has expanded around the Triangle quickly and there's a reason. The quirky flavors are a novelty, but also really tasty. I'm a sucker for the Watermelon-Basil, and my wife is crazy over the Chocolate-Chili when she can actually find it. For those not looking to try to figure out how two disparate flavors can actually fit together so well, their normal flavors are still light years ahead of whatever you deem the competition to be. Occasionally, I even enjoy a regular strawberry or key lime popsicle. Also, if you're one of those crazy dog people...they make treats for your pets. I don't know why or how they work, but I'm guessing that your dogs will thank you...after all, none of their other flavors have turned out to be bad ideas yet. read more

My friend and I got four flavors to try: grapefuit basil (only tasted the grapefruit and it's quite bitter, but refreshing), strawberry oreo (creamy and delicious), asian plum (sweet and a bit tangy), lemon orange blossom (taste very flowery...kind of like that chinese soap). Loved the pops as well as the gelato. The place is in almost a hole in a wall type of strip but well worth trying it out. The store itself was very simple but clean. Bench seating inside and some outside in front of the store. The pops and gelato are pretty expensive ($2.50 each pop and small gelato). But a nice treat still. Another Yelp Elite recommended this place, so I checked it out while in Durham! Seems like they just moved to the location on Hillsborough St. Inside it had a very cute, almost beachy vibe. There were a lot of ice cream and pop (ice cream pop / popsicle ) options. My boyfriend got a scoop of coffee nutella ice cream which was creamy and the coffee/nutella combined well. I had a strawberries and creme pop, and it was the perfect combination of creamy / fruity and pretty refreshing. They also sell pies by the slice here and have a small kids' area. read more

Love love love. Only in Durham :). Lots of options both creamy and ice Locopops. They are only a couple of dollars so a nice cheap treat. My fav is cookies and cream because they have large chunks of oreo and usually even a whole oreo in it. But mexican chocolate, and strawberries and cream are also awesome (clearly I prefer the creamy pops). They do a lot of crazy flavors... and out of the many many times I have gone I have found one I didn't like (something tomato.. so don't get that one) but most of the time they are great. They even have one for a dog! They are frozen beef or chicken with a rawhide as the stick. read more

Now this is the perfect ice cream place. Had their Mexican Chocolate. Not super sweet, not super cinnamonny. Perfect thickness. Plus they have pops for dogs! Beef and Chicken flavour. They just need to add a bacon flavoured pop for dogs and they will get 5 stars on the puppy version of yelp. Plus just 3.50 for a pint. Wish I could take it on the plane back to Philly.
