Excellent place for popsicles, mangonada, and many other desserts in Durham. It is a little pricy, but worth it for the occasional treat. We stopped by on a Saturday for popsicles (mixed fruit, cotton candy, and mango chile) and mangonada. They offer numerous options so it took us a while to decide on what we wanted. The employees were patient and assisted us in finding what we were looking for. Many of the items are made with fresh fruit and are packed with flavor. I especially enjoyed the mangonada. It had an ideal balance of fresh mangos, sorbet, chamoy, and chili powder. Overall, we had a good experience here and recommend this ice cream shop to others!

Mango paletas. Filled with chunky pieces of mango!

How did I wait so long before visiting here?! The prices are reasonable and the selection of paletas is off the charts! Be it fruit filled (lots of fruit!) or creme version, it'll take a while to get thru all the selections they offer. They also have ice cream with tons of flavors too. I had mango and it was a huge portion and really delicious! It was filled with fruit chunks and exactly what I needed on a hot day to cool down! The employees are super nice and the decor is fun too.

I visited today, for a cool mangonada, and a scoop of Fresa strawberry ice cream, and yummy.

"Mexican paletas/ popsicles & ice cream- a shop to rival Locopops!" We all know and love Locopops, but this is some serious competition. A quick walk around the corner from Mami Noras as well as several other Latin American food places, this dessert stop has tons of Mexican paletas as well as ice cream. As the other review notes, there aren't any labels, but you can look closely and guess the flavors or ask for help from the friendly staff. Kiwi, watermelon, pistachio, mixed nut, strawberry, etc.- all look REALLY good, and there are tons of options. Cost is $2 for either the popsicle or a cup of ice cream. If you get ice cream, they also have standard toppings available. The quality is very high- the paletas are very dense and clearly fresh-made. You can see/ taste big chunks of fruit in all the fruit options, for example. Restaurant is also strikingly clean (albeit a little Spartan). What's especially nice here is that most of the same flavors are available as either ice cream or as a popsicle. Relatedly, they give you small sample spoons, so you can see if something tastes good by tasting the ice cream before plopping the $2 investment in the popsicle or cup. That worked for me- I almost got something else but tried the pistachio, and it was SO good I had to buy it instead. The flavors aren't as "experimental" as at Locopops (more "straight" flavors), but I do really like the opportunity to sample that this place affords. I'd say this place rocks- am excited to come back. PS- This is my 100th review!

One visible oreo, and a hidden one to surprise inside

Walked in on a crisp fall night (perf time for ice cream when you're already freezing) and was greeted by the server. The popsicles are laid out on the left side of the shop underneath the flavors sign, and the ice cream is next to it on the right. If you're looking for ice cream, the flavors are different that those on the sign and not labeled at all, so it's best to browse the ice cream, annoyingly ask the server what each flavor is, sample and make a choice. They also help you with the popsicles as they aren't clearly labeled either and are very nice throughout. Huge variety of flavors, including some novel ones like lime ice cream (yay tropical) and rice pudding popsicles. Hubby got the rose and pistachio flavors, both a bit too strong for my taste, but on point flavorings. My oreo popsicle had two whole cookies in it, so for $5.91 we were really pleased! Bring cash if you are planning on ordering less than 3 items, as there is a $6 min. Will return next time to try some authentic treats, esp the mangonada!

    So many flavors!

Thanks to Steve A. for finding La Monarca (I can always count on him to find a tasty spot when he's got a craving!) If you're looking for a huge variety of flavors, ice cream, popsicles, frozen banana treats or cake pops, this is your stop! La Monarca is located in a strip mall in the heart of Durham's "Little Mexico." (FYI: the GPS took us to the Compare Foods side, but the shop is actually located directly opposite, around the corner from Alpaca Peruvian Charcoal Chicken i.e. Mami Nora's) It truly gives you a different cultural perspective, which can be very eye opening and honestly is needed for so many of us that live a very cookie cutter lifestyle. But don't get me started on that...let's talk about the ICE CREAM! There are TONS of flavors, both typical and unusual. The employees were very willing to let us sample several things: coconut, mocha, coffee with almond, pistachio, cookies & cream and even Kahlúa. The ice creams are in huge blocks, so flavors might interact a bit, for example, the cookies & cream had a slight red hots flavor to it, but was incredibly rich and had HUGE cookie chunks. Also, the portions are large and the price is very reasonable for the amount you're getting. $2 for a small cup and $4 for a double scoop waffle cone. The popsicles looked really great, which big chunks of cookies or fruit, I'll have to try one of those next time! I highly recommend taking the ice cream to go and driving six minutes to Northgate Park for a little walk along the Ellerbe Creek Trail. La Monarca is a great spot to satisfy that sweet tooth craving!

I absolutely love the ice cream here and it is the best in Durham. There is a huge variety of flavors and you can't go wrong with any of them! The coffee ice cream is my absolute favorite.

    Dozens of Flavors

Pros: Super affordable, A wide variety of traditional and authentic Mexican flavors. Cons: A little difficult to find the first time. Located right next to the Boost Mobile. $6 min purchase if using credit Bottom Line: If you are craving something sweet, spicy, or sweet and spicy, stop by here for dessert! During my time in Durham I was on the hunt for a local dessert eatery that I could try and found that my fellow yelpers gave all 5 stars to this hole in the wall. Unfortunately I had trouble finding the location because Google Maps directs you to the same plaza but the wrong location. Instead look for the Boost Mobile across from Compare Foods and Big Lots and you'll find La Monarca. As soon as I walked In, I noticed the giant freezer filled with popsicles of every fruit and color. The ice cream doesn't lose out in variety either as there are all sorts of colorful concoctions spread throughout the store. The sheer number of choices was a little overwhelming, but the kind owner walked me through all of the selections including her own recommendations and favorites. For $2 per popsicle it's tempting to go ham and order 3 or 4 when you have options like strawberries and crème, mango habanero, and salsa picante. Since I had a big dinner though I was able to hold back and ordered a chocolate covered banana topped with pecans, and a guava popsicle. The banana was delicious; I mean who doesn't like chocolate covered anything?! The guava was delicious too! My only warning is that she uses fresh fruit when making her concoctions so beware of seeds when ordering the guava popsicle. If you are like me and love fruit junks in your desserts, you'll definitely want to try La Monarca.

Everything I sampled was delicious, and the scoop I ended up with was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. You can tell they put a lot of thought into creating combinations that are both creative and genuinely tasty. Whether you're a local or just visiting Durham, Jeni's is absolutely worth a stop for a sweet treat. Great ice cream, great atmosphere, and even better customer service. "Eastern-inspired ice cream and other sweets, next door to La Vaquita in Durham"…read more Stopped by this lovely shop at 7pm on a Saturday evening. The name a little hard to catch, but it's a small greenish building immediately beside La Vaquita on Chapel Hill Road (with the giant cow on the roof). The outdoor area is quite nice, with a fenced outdoor area having swings and other seating/ space for families. We were greeted quite warmly when we arrived. They had maybe ~15 flavors of ice cream or similar (will return to that in a second) as well as other sweets like baklava. But this is not your ordinary ice cream shop-- the flavors were unusual. Cucumber, date, and others caught my eye, but I didn't try those. Unlike one Yelp reviewer's comment, when we went, there was both a regular pistachio as well as a vegan pistachio option. I got something different-- I tried the falooda... a Persian inspired ice-cream-like dish with rose syrup and small cooked noodles. The texture is slightly like an italian ice, but the flavor was great. However, there's more-- on a table off to the side, there were separate lemon and cherry flavors that we were invited to try adding to the falooda. Let me tell you-- either addition turned a good dish into a heavenly dish! Sooooo good. Try it, but only if you're open to "this isn't just ice cream". There were also some wafer cookies to the side we were invited to have with our respective dishes. Seating inside was stools at benches facing a thin window bar-- outside is nicer if you have a big group and/ or if weather is nice, but it was fine. I did stop by the restroom briefly, and it was clean, too. Overall, definitely plan to come back to this eastern-inspired ice cream shop, and I encourage others to give it a try too!
