Soon after they moved to their new home which was built only 3 years before they purchased it, it became clear there was a signings that construction defect on the second floor with a large leak into the ceiling which was due to incorrect installation of a sliding door. This was a known defect which had not been transparently disclosed by the prior owner. We attempted to contact the contractor who had built the home without success. After months of meeting with other contractors to get this door replaced and reinstalled, we found Sommer Construction. Thomas met with us and was incredibly empathetic - he insisted that rather than repair it himself - he would help us contact the home builder and facilitate the repair being done under warranty. When we first heard this idea, we didn't really want to go down this path because we didn't think there was any way this could work. Given the long ordeal, we simply wanted to pay for it and have it repaired without the hassle of arguing and fighting with someone (especially given that Covid was ongoing). After speaking to Tom and considering how expensive the repair was going to be, we thought why not give it a chance. Tom was convinced that this repair should be repaired under warranty by the person who built the home. It seemed to good to be true that someone would go through all of this hassle and go out of their way to help us get this done. This just speaks to the kind of person Thomas is, he tracked down the original builder and held him responsible for the repair. He then guided us through the negotiations and repairs with the original contractor - taking time out of his busy schedule all because he is a genuinely good and empathetic human being. It is so refreshing to meet someone like this and we cannot express how grateful we are to Thomas Sommer. He gives contractors a good name. If you read the other reviews you will quickly see that this is just the way that Thomas is and how he runs his company. The more we got to know Thomas we found that he is simply a man of principle first and foremost. If we ever need any project done, he is the first person we would call for sure! There's only one person in the house and with the pandemic, nobody else has been here. There isn't much traffic in that room. I contacted Thomas on 1/11/21. I asked about a warranty and explained about the grout and that the floor was creaking. He was a bit defensive - he'd done the job right - but said to call him back in a week and we'd look into it. I called again on 1/20/21 as requested; no response. I called again 1/28; no response. Ghosting your clients when there is an issue with your work is really problematic. Even if the warranty is over, it's best to find out what has happened. For this, I'm going to hire someone else to regrout and I think the problem should be solved - I've since realized the creaking is coming only where the tiles are missing grout so it should be an easy fix. That said, you should think twice about using Sommer Construction; what if the situation is bigger? And, if it is, you can always claim against his Contractors bond with the State of CA to get resolution if he ghosts you.

First time, I didn't write a review, I should have, it was a positive experience and I need to be better about that. I called on a Saturday morning when our door wouldn't go down at all leaving out stuff completely exposed. They were sympathetic, saying they would make it out the same day. It was obvious we needed a new door, the question was did we also need a new motor. They could have easily lied, we'd have believed them if they said we needed both, but they were very honest and adjusted the motor the suggested we let our motor live out it's life, which should be at least 2 more years. We bought and installed the door for a reasonable price. Yesterday I called called when I had challenges with the going down without having to hold the button, it was obvious to me that it wasn't the actual door. Today Brian came out shared it was simply bad luck that the wires to one of the sensors was old and broke/separated. He didn't suggest rewiring, he fixed the wires with some tools and electrical tape so no rewiring needed. I can't speak for others who may have had a different experience but I'm in a service industry, know what quality service is, and I'm also pretty high maintenance as a person. I've found my best contractors through reviews, and conversely, I've realized too late that the ones I've had issues with usually have a history of bad feedback--and Ace Garage Door Company / Brian is no exception. Brian originally installed my garage door. Recently, after some home construction, the door needed a simple realignment. I called him out expecting an estimate first. Instead of providing a clear quote, he went ahead and did the work without my prior approval. The entire job took him about 15 minutes, and he then slapped me with an unreasonably high $175 invoice. When I asked for a reduction, he claimed he "quoted it last time" (which I have absolutely no record of) and insisted the work took him much longer. When I reached out to discuss the unfair charge, he was completely dismissive, sending me a laundry list of reasons why he charges so much--citing his personal rent, $2,000+ monthly gas bill, and taxes. He showed a total sense of entitlement, seemingly forgetting that consumers also have bills to pay. I told him that if he couldn't be reasonable with his pricing, he would lose both my positive review and my return business. He couldn't have cared less. To make matters worse, after I paid him via Venmo, he sent me a revised invoice adding an extra $5.33 just to force me to cover his 2.99% Venmo seller fees. On top of the price gouging, he brought a terrible attitude to my property. On his invoice, he actually apologized for being "crabby," justifying his bad attitude by explaining he was "recently almost sued" because of a different job. To top it all off, he is misleading about his business history. He claims it "took him 35 years to get this good," implying decades of business experience, but public records show his business has only existed since 2006. There are plenty of skilled, honest garage door contractors out there who charge reasonable prices while maintaining a professional customer experience. Avoid this business and save yourself the headache.

I had to split the work up into two days cause some of my items hadn't arrived yet and he was able to quote me for the two days just fine with a clear understanding of the work. He worked efficiently, had all the tools and a floor tarp and work was excellent quality all around. The price was very competitive and reasonable. He was very pushy and so into himself that I had a difficult time getting him to listen so I could ask questions. He finally hung up on me. I'm looking for a licensed contractor to correct the shoddy work of another licensed contractor. Consequently I'm working from the basis of an expensive hard earned lesson. So I wanted it clear I have my requirements and want assurance they will be met. Joel refused to listen, wanted to argue, tell me what to think, told me I should instead hire a handyman (and that my previous licensed contractor was just a handyman). Then he hung up on me. Oh, I did finally get out of him in answer to my question, that Greenlight Building Services has a $500 minimum. My conclusion from this phone call is this company is pushy, will not listen, and therefore cannot be trusted.
