We paid roughly $4,000 for a new garage door and motor, including an upgraded insulated door that was supposed to improve efficiency. From day one, the installation was poorly done. There were large gaps along the sides of the door, making the insulation completely useless. Instead of fixing the tracks properly, the installer nailed 2x4s along the sides as a makeshift "solution." It looked unprofessional and should have been a red flag immediately. The person doing the install was clearly inexperienced and spent most of the time hitting the tracks to force them into place rather than recommending proper repairs or replacement. Fast forward three years, and now the tracks are failing--no surprise given the original workmanship. The company's solution? A new quote for $1,800 to replace the tracks they should have installed correctly in the first place. This feels like a scam company with untrained employees, charging premium prices for subpar work and then coming back years later to charge even more to fix their own mistakes. Everything was explained thoroughly and he was very friendly and gave good advice about updating our system. If I could give separate ratings for quality and value, I would give five stars for quality and service. After receiving the recommendation to update our garage door opener I decided to get many other quotes from well rated insured and licensed vendors. Local garage doors was the highest by far. Twice as much as a smaller vendor and 600 more than the highest alternate quote I received. In this economy, it makes it really difficult to justify using Local Garage Doors going forward. He quoted me a cost for a new door which could be installed the next day. I said ok and came back out with the coupon which I had for $300 off a new door. When I mentioned that he quickly said oh I already included that in and claimed he is doing the $500 off. I felt mislead and of course had no way to challenge it. He didn't mention the coupon or any discount up front even when I asked if that was the best they could do. Shady sales tactics or a way to refuse their own coupon. Buyer BEWARE! of Local Garage Doors. Our garage door (original one, about 21 years old) was making rough and squeaking noises when opening and closing it. So, I pulled one of Local Garage Doors commonly seen ad flyers seen both seen in the Valpak mailers and TheHomeMag, and made an appointment. When I spoke with the person answering the business number, I mentioned the $95 coupon that stated the following: "Extensive Lube and Tune" No service call charge. No hidden fees! Plus 31 point safety inspection Garage Door Tune up. ' Gabriel the service tech arrived promptly at the appointment time and quickly explained what the issue was with the garage door and how to repair it. He detailed that the original garage door rollers (5 on each side) are not very good and that they don't actually roll now and that when the door moves these rollers scrape in the track as it moves causing the noise. He then presented to me the options: he has some replacement rollers that are only guaranteed for 1 year; and then he has some very good rollers that have ball bearings and have a lifetime warranty. He definitely recommended the better rollers and that they would be worth it. I showed him the coupon and he said that his service would include that but that installing the rollers would cost more. I said "ok, I guess so." After about 30 minutes later, Gabriel knocked on the door to let me know he was finished. The cost to me was $479.48. Whoa! that was certainly much higher than the $95 tune up plus what I ballparked for the rollers and labor to be maybe another $100 for a grand total of $195 give or take, I thought. When Local Garage Doors contacted me to post a review, I said sure, but could they please provide me an itemized invoice or receipt so I could see how much I paid for the parts and how much was for labor, so that I could understand their pricing. The receipt I received listed: Qty 1: neighborhood lube & tune; Qt1: High cycle lifetime rollers (10); Qty 1: Labor roller installation. There was no corresponding cost next to the quantity, so I asked again for the price for each of these listed quantities. I was told that is the level and detail of their invoicing, that they charge by the job. So, I looked up the cost of rollers with ball bearings that are in fact sold in packs of 10. The prices ranged from $15 to $20 for a pack of ten. Hmmm. And the entire lube, tune and roller installation took all of 30 minutes to complete. What I find most interesting, is that these bad rollers that I was now replacing were of the cheap end and it was now after 21 years that they started to make a lot of noise. Did I really need the top end lifetime with ball bearing rollers? Buyer beware. Even if the cost of the rollers that I looked up were inferior to the ones that they used, let's even double the cost of the rollers to $40, so that they get a profit mark up. With a final price of $479.48, that means I paid $439.48 for half an hour of labor. Incredible. Yes, California raised the minimum wage for fast food workers to around $20/hr, but I had no idea that garage service labor hours would be over $800/hour. Who knew? Gabriel is a great tech and I enjoyed a brief chat with him and I trust the work he did was fine. But in these very tough times, with egg prices through the roof and gas at $4.20/gal. It's really a bad experience to have a grossly overpriced repair service like this. In comparison, last year we had a service tech come in and pull out our original dishwasher, install new water hoses, and hook up the new dishwasher and it took him 2.5 to 3.0 hours, and he hauled away the old one, all for $275. Jacob and two trainees came out to do a "lube and tune special" on my garage door that was installed by their company a couple of years ago. I have never been happy with the original installation and expressed my dissatisfaction to Jacob. They proceeded to address all of my concerns which included new rollers, weatherstripping, stripped bolt replacement, track adjustment and the lube and tune. They were here for over two hours. I was only charged for the lube and tune. This company has to be the biggest scam in the business. Do NOT trust them. They lie and use the excuse of the employee was in training to cover their greed. I called them and asked for a quote as my garage door wouldn't close and I live alone and was very nervous. The employee who showed up said it was the worst garage door he had seen yet.. It was in such bad shape that I needed new rails and new controller and a new door . I asked how much she said probably 2800. I know nothing about garage doors or pricing. But OK I needed it that day. I signed the agreement and they came back to install. Their boss was there who said you didn't need the rails and the controller is fine. OK if I didn't need new rails, why is the price the same as when he said I needed new rails and gave me a price. He said I can give you a new controller for $800 more $800 more? OK that brings me up to 3800. That's $1000-$1500 more than the verbal quote. I was given by the gentleman who came to give me the estimate. He said the gentleman who gave you the estimate is a brand new employee and I'm here to make sure everything goes OK. Well, the new employee screwed up on the quote obviously. They weren't willing to compensate. They're all staring at me waiting for me to sign the thing and pay it. So I paid it assuming the company would hear what happened and compensate me somehow. I called and talked to Catherine the manager of the company I guess. She says the bill is correct charged only for the door. Well I could care less about that. I was told that I needed new everything and then this is the price and the boss says no I don't need new tracks but it's still the same price. They charge me the same for everything when I didn't eat everything. She said I will give you new rails for free. I said I was just told I didn't need new rails. Why would I accept new rails? He also recommended some other repairs I should have done in the future but there was no pressure to get them done right now. I also had a weird issue afterwards where I was accidentally charged twice for the repair on my credit card. Unfortunately I have to amend my previous review. After only 3 weeks of operation after their repair, my garage door failed. The cable came undone and to door came off the track. I contacted the company and they sent someone out to repair it in a timely manner but the tech said it was not covered by the warranty. I disagreed, as the cable was reinstalled by the other tech in the first repair, but I didn't want to hassle the tech and I needed the door fix and able to close. $500+ for this second repair after the first $700 repair. Upon reaching out to the office and explaining that there was no way this was not covered by the warranty, we exchange dozens of messages escalating in frustration at one point they claimed it was "operator error." I found this offensive give that operation of a garage door is pushing a button. They agreed to send out a senior tech to "explain it to me". He ultimately just called and after I explained it to him he decided he didn't need to come up the hill and offer $200 refund. I had spent enough time dealing with this company and agreed in the interest of moving on. So I would not recommend going with this company, and if you do you should understand they will not stand behind their work or honor their whopping 30 day warranty. Technician Jorge Sopon arrived early and immediately was able to identify problem. I purchased a second remote and had him install an outdoor key pad as well.
