And the fish is incredible. Having bought the aforementioned prawns (didn't queue though - not because they're not worth it, just because I'm really lazy) I can safely say they're the best in Edinburgh. They are absolutely huge, really fresh and tasted amazing. The rest of the food is awesome as well, even if you're just picking up a piece of haddock or something then it is the best place around. Admittedly slightly more expensive than the supermarkets, but when you're getting fish of this quality that is fresh every day then you can't really complain.

Rather than simply trying to flog me the most expensive fish they had, the guy was very patient with me and showed me loads of different options. When I used to live in Marchmont I used to see the new deiliveries coming in every day (on the rare occasions I was up early enough, that is!), so you can always be confident that the stuff they have is fresh.

Now add in years of experience, a super clean and shiny shop, great variety, friendly staff and of course fresh FISH. Whole fish, fillets, 'steaks', shellfish - langoustines with the whiskers still twitching, a giant tank of lobster, piles of mussels and loads of extras. They have smokies, smoked haddock, cold smoked salmon and my favourite - their own Hot Smoked Salmon. You can even get slices of these vac packed (well - they can vac pack anything for you) to keep in the fridge for a few days. Soft, flaky, smoky, delicate - great cold or gently warmed up. All this is set at the quaint Newhaven harbour - completely with picturesque lighthouse, dock with seats to sit and watch the boats from and a couple of restaurants. Makes it all worth the trip!

Live crayfish in huge tanks adorn a wall, filleted & whole fish, shellfish, prawns, you name it, they'll most likely have it. The most endearing point to make is the fact that rather than reside behind a counter, the fishmongers mix amongst the patrons and take an active interest in showing their produce in best light. Tesco, Morrisons, ASDA and the like, take note...this is seafood and that is service at it's best! Bravo!

There are fresh produce vendors as well as food, snacks, honey, candles, and coffee mixed in. I really wanted to try the pasties guy, the rows and rows of savory baked good looked amazing but we let our kids choose and they went for something else. Most places do accept credit cards and we came mainly to pick up some fresh fruit to balance out all the heavy food we would be eating. The climate in Scotland is cold and rainy this time of year and the oranges and raspberries we got tasted different that the ones we get in the Bay Area. There is also meat and seafood, I loved seeing the fresh caught crab on a bed of seaweed and hard to find meat like venison for sale.

He got raspberry, but they offered different flavors. It was very creamy and good and their waffle cone was excellent. Tasted almost caramelized and nicely crunchy. My favorite was their egg custard. It was very flaky and crunchy with a creamy center. It was very good. I've had some egg custards in Portugal as well, and these tasted authentic.

I know that fishmongers work in pounds, but I work in kilos and I can't help but think that it wouldn't be much effort on their part just to knock out the conversion on a calculator whereas I have to try and do it in my head without really knowing how many pounds are equivalent to a kilo. Despite this, you do seem to get a good amount of fish for you money even though I'm not precisely sure how much you get, but it is certainly on a par with elsewhere. The staff here are friendly and will be happy to have a quick chat with you as they weigh out your order and get you your chance which adds a bit of pleasantry to your visit although I must admit I still struggle with some of the accents so my parts in these chats often end up being nodding and smiling a lot. Another little criticism, however, is that the range is fairly small sticking to the old favourites which most will be happy with, but I do like choice in my fish so I do find this a bit disappointing. I was immediately drawn to "Something Fishy" as the lovely wee shoppe reminded me of the old fishmongers we used to have around in my birthplace near La Rochelle before the bloody supermarkets put them all out of business. So my friend and I popped in on a Tuesday an inquired about these fine ladies of the sea.. alas there wasn't any. As the benevolent and knowledgeable owner explained us, since it's a pricey delicacy people tend to treat themselves with it only for fine supper over the week-end. That said, the good man went on a limb and offered to order us a kilo of them to pick-up on Thursday morning, without any guarantee that the Frog and Yankee tourists will be back for it. Needless to say, I was there on Thursday morning at first light! And what lovely beasts they were.. big, extra fresh and full of caviar.. But pictures are best. Quel délice!

But this year I've been pretty regular at getting myself over there to ogle all the fresh fruit and veg, as well as all the fresh fish. The only way I normally let myself eat fish is when it's local, because the idea of eating fish that has been shipped to Scotland from Australia always puts me off, no matter how much time it's spent on ice. A & D Patterson have both fresh and smoked fish. They also sell shellfish. I bought smoked haddock there a couple of weeks ago to replicate an amazing risotto recipe my family tried at Sweet Melindas: risotto with smoked haddock and chives with fresh cod. If you're as iffy as I am about the environmental impact of fishing and yet have as little self-control when it comes to seafood as I do, definitely stop by the Farmer's Market on a bright Saturday and get some fish from A & D Patterson, who're there every Saturday.
