I haven't been in Edinburgh long, but this is the best fishmonger I've seen, and I've definitely been looking. Scallops, razor clams, crabs, john dory, squid, mackerel, lobster, king prawn, to name a few things there today. I will absolutely be going back regularly.

When I buy seafood - it makes a big impression that I can actually see the sea and boats from the store. Now add in years of experience, a super clean and shiny shop, great variety, friendly staff and of course fresh FISH. Whole fish, fillets, 'steaks', shellfish - langoustines with the whiskers still twitching, a giant tank of lobster, piles of mussels and loads of extras. They have smokies, smoked haddock, cold smoked salmon and my favourite - their own Hot Smoked Salmon. You can even get slices of these vac packed (well - they can vac pack anything for you) to keep in the fridge for a few days. Soft, flaky, smoky, delicate - great cold or gently warmed up. All this is set at the quaint Newhaven harbour - completely with picturesque lighthouse, dock with seats to sit and watch the boats from and a couple of restaurants. Makes it all worth the trip!

Live crayfish in huge tanks adorn a wall, filleted & whole fish, shellfish, prawns, you name it, they'll most likely have it. The most endearing point to make is the fact that rather than reside behind a counter, the fishmongers mix amongst the patrons and take an active interest in showing their produce in best light. Tesco, Morrisons, ASDA and the like, take note...this is seafood and that is service at it's best! Bravo!

I came here and bought fresh halibut and prawns for a dinner party, and although there was a strong fishy smell (and my granny always told me if fish is smelly it's not fresh) I found the fish quite good! The shop has been there for over ten years, and there are several in the Edinburgh area. I had a nice chat with the lady in there ( I couldn't work out if she was Sheila or not) and she said they've got the most skilled workers, and probably the best fish in Scotland. I've grown a little wary of self promotion, so it's up to you to decide. What I did find charming were the old fashioned cutting tables, which I'm sure have a more appropriate and technical name, and scales. They're also several donations by customers, to a certain hospice, plastered all over the wall. Nothing like a community conscious fishmongers eh?

This is a fairly traditional place, so don't expect anything too wacky or modern. George Hughes & Son does, however, boast a massive selection of locally and sustainably sourced fish and seafood. From sea bass to trout, lobster, john dory, scallops, tuna, you name it, they've probably got it. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful too. Being an independent 'fish emporium' (note, not a fishmonger), expect to pay independent fish emporium prices. You won't get a tuna steak for supermarket prices. But then, it'll taste of tuna and not salt water. Also, you can eat it safe in the knowledge it's been sustainably sourced and you're supporting a local business, both of which are very important in these testing times.

If you know your fish you'll recognise that the range of fish covered here is very impressive and you do not pay any premium in return for being offered this range. The fish generally start at £9 a kilo, which really isn't bad for fish of this quality and you'll get a decent amount of choice in that price range with the price going up from here. For those less set on their specific choice of variety there is also the option of the off cuts from many varieties of fish at £7 per kilo. Given that this often contains good fish and all high quality fish this is certainly a winner in my book - you cannot beat this price.

Ultimately, it's all about the fish and, at G Armstrong, there's no need for fancy flavours as the supermarkets tend to do. - The quality is just so high that there's no need. In fact, it's best to enjoy the natural smoked flavours. The salmon feels so indulgent and plump that even the smallest of nibbles is satisfying. The fillet I bought will provide three portions to put in other dishes. So, although, it's more expensive than a supermarket offering, it is so very worth it and the quality is evident. The fish on offer here offers both good quality and reasonable pricing, which is as much as you can really ask for. My main complaint is the fact that they only display prices in pounds. I know that fishmongers work in pounds, but I work in kilos and I can't help but think that it wouldn't be much effort on their part just to knock out the conversion on a calculator whereas I have to try and do it in my head without really knowing how many pounds are equivalent to a kilo. Despite this, you do seem to get a good amount of fish for you money even though I'm not precisely sure how much you get, but it is certainly on a par with elsewhere. The staff here are friendly and will be happy to have a quick chat with you as they weigh out your order and get you your chance which adds a bit of pleasantry to your visit although I must admit I still struggle with some of the accents so my parts in these chats often end up being nodding and smiling a lot. Another little criticism, however, is that the range is fairly small sticking to the old favourites which most will be happy with, but I do like choice in my fish so I do find this a bit disappointing. I was immediately drawn to "Something Fishy" as the lovely wee shoppe reminded me of the old fishmongers we used to have around in my birthplace near La Rochelle before the bloody supermarkets put them all out of business. So my friend and I popped in on a Tuesday an inquired about these fine ladies of the sea.. alas there wasn't any. As the benevolent and knowledgeable owner explained us, since it's a pricey delicacy people tend to treat themselves with it only for fine supper over the week-end. That said, the good man went on a limb and offered to order us a kilo of them to pick-up on Thursday morning, without any guarantee that the Frog and Yankee tourists will be back for it. Needless to say, I was there on Thursday morning at first light! And what lovely beasts they were.. big, extra fresh and full of caviar.. But pictures are best. Quel délice!

Indeed, I think Indulgence is a theme in the cafe. My first visit was under sad circumstances - recently single and feeling vulnerable, my friend took me and ordered me the 'Spanish Hot Chocolate' (see picture). Oh My God. Where I was feeling despairing, distraught and dismayed I was overcome with delight, deliriousness and felt thoroughly delectable!! It was perfect...perhaps a bit rich, but the first few sips were to die for. It even came with a little dough cake-thing to dip into the thick, gloopy chocolate, like fondue! It would have been ideal for two to share. To be honest, I'm not what you would call a choc-a-holic - especially now that Cadbury's is no longer considered 'chocolate'. But there is something for everyone to enjoy, whether its a slice of their GLORIOUS chocolate cake (it was delicious, after a while I felt I should find a mirror to check if my pupils had dilated) or one of their mini chocolate bites. If you can't make it to the shop they sell online and they're much cheaper than their competition ( it's one of their ethical principles, woohoo!). It really is worth visiting, on a warm summer day to lounge and indulge yourself, or on a cold winter evening to keep yourself warm. It's the sort of place I imagine Harry Potter would sit in...
