The first fish monger i've ever seen with a line out the door. These fish are in demand. There is so much fresh fish on ice, that it feels like you're walking into a freezer. The choice is great, picked up a beautiful piece of salmon that I baked with some peppercorns. Much better taste than the bleachy stuff you get out of the packet in Tesco. My only objection is that it's a little pricey, which you expect from independent branches, but it's a little overpriced.

A really good quality fishmongers which has a brilliant reputation, so much so that my Auntie actually brings us fish over from here every other week because my Mum loves it so much. Today, I ventured into the shop for the first time myself, having tasted some fishy wonderfulness but never been in the shop. The fishmonger was really helpful, as I wanted a portion of my new favourite fish, seabass. He told me which weight would be best for what I needed and although it was pricey, I was happy to pay for it because it looked fresh. They have a great selection, but are a bit on the pricey side, although with fish I just wouldn't cut any corners to save money just incase.

I have never seen a fishmongers so busy; on saturday mornings you can see people actually queuing outside just to pick up some prawns or whatever. I mean how many places can you say that about. And the fish is incredible. Having bought the aforementioned prawns (didn't queue though - not because they're not worth it, just because I'm really lazy) I can safely say they're the best in Edinburgh. They are absolutely huge, really fresh and tasted amazing. The rest of the food is awesome as well, even if you're just picking up a piece of haddock or something then it is the best place around. Admittedly slightly more expensive than the supermarkets, but when you're getting fish of this quality that is fresh every day then you can't really complain.

Although it's right in the middle of student-ville, Eddie's is well-known all over the city and once you've bought from here it's easy to see why. The staff are not only friendly but also really knowledgeable. When I went in I needed things to make a fish pie, although I didn't know which fish would be best for it. Rather than simply trying to flog me the most expensive fish they had, the guy was very patient with me and showed me loads of different options. When I used to live in Marchmont I used to see the new deiliveries coming in every day (on the rare occasions I was up early enough, that is!), so you can always be confident that the stuff they have is fresh.

When I buy seafood - it makes a big impression that I can actually see the sea and boats from the store. Now add in years of experience, a super clean and shiny shop, great variety, friendly staff and of course fresh FISH. Whole fish, fillets, 'steaks', shellfish - langoustines with the whiskers still twitching, a giant tank of lobster, piles of mussels and loads of extras. They have smokies, smoked haddock, cold smoked salmon and my favourite - their own Hot Smoked Salmon. You can even get slices of these vac packed (well - they can vac pack anything for you) to keep in the fridge for a few days. Soft, flaky, smoky, delicate - great cold or gently warmed up. All this is set at the quaint Newhaven harbour - completely with picturesque lighthouse, dock with seats to sit and watch the boats from and a couple of restaurants. Makes it all worth the trip!

This is a fairly traditional place, so don't expect anything too wacky or modern. George Hughes & Son does, however, boast a massive selection of locally and sustainably sourced fish and seafood. From sea bass to trout, lobster, john dory, scallops, tuna, you name it, they've probably got it. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful too. Being an independent 'fish emporium' (note, not a fishmonger), expect to pay independent fish emporium prices. You won't get a tuna steak for supermarket prices. But then, it'll taste of tuna and not salt water. Also, you can eat it safe in the knowledge it's been sustainably sourced and you're supporting a local business, both of which are very important in these testing times.

If you know your fish you'll recognise that the range of fish covered here is very impressive and you do not pay any premium in return for being offered this range. The fish generally start at £9 a kilo, which really isn't bad for fish of this quality and you'll get a decent amount of choice in that price range with the price going up from here. For those less set on their specific choice of variety there is also the option of the off cuts from many varieties of fish at £7 per kilo. Given that this often contains good fish and all high quality fish this is certainly a winner in my book - you cannot beat this price.
