There is outdoor dining too that would be nice if the weather was warmer. Cool vibe, but it is kind of dark inside the stone walls. The menu is Scottish-focused with seasonal ingredients. We didn't want to overeat, so we decided to share a starter and a main. We got the Scottish venison fritters, which were ok. We enjoyed the pappardelle pasta (roast pumpkin and pecorino sauce, wild mushrooms, spinach, bacon and poppy seed crumb, crispy sage). It was flavorful and didn't feel too heavy. What made it even more disappointing was the rather grand announcement on the menu: "Gilmour's Roast Sirloin of Beef served every Sunday Lunch from 12-4pm, while stocks last." Well, that certainly set my expectations high! The wording made it sound as though people were practically queuing around the block to get their hands on this legendary Sunday roast before it sold out. Having now sampled it, I suspect they'll have enough beef left over to see them through to next Sunday. What arrived was two rather sad slices of very dry beef. I was expecting a generous portion of beautifully roasted, succulent beef--tender, juicy, and practically falling apart at the mere sight of a fork. Instead, I was presented with something that appeared to have spent rather too long contemplating its existence in the oven. A bit of gravy might have helped, but I suspect even a full-scale rescue operation would have struggled to bring this beef back to life. Now, the sticky toffee pudding was an entirely different story! Absolutely delightful. Warm, moist, and delicious, with a generous helping of rich toffee sauce and a small dollop of ice cream. Proper British comfort food at its finest! If the Sunday roast was the disappointment of the afternoon, the sticky toffee pudding was the hero that swooped in to save the day. I would happily return for that alone. The service was lovely, with friendly and welcoming staff, and the restaurant itself is in a fantastic location with a wonderful atmosphere. It's a great spot to sit down and enjoy a meal. Unfortunately, when you advertise a Sunday roast as though it's the hottest ticket in town, you really ought to deliver something worth writing home about. In short: Come for the atmosphere, stay for the sticky toffee pudding, but perhaps give the Sunday roast a miss.

Aha, I remembered, we'd be passing that new street food police box that Blythe reviewed earlier today, let's stop by and try it. Cue, the best decision I made all weekend. Having had a busy day, what with the Tram Stop Market, the lovely chap who runs B&B had run out of slaw, so gave us a discount on our meals. Totally unnecessary, but very welcome nonetheless. As we were going to be walking and eating (no mean feat) we both opted for rolls - mine with beef, Kip's with crab. The beef was slow-cooked short rib in a sherry gravy, umm, amazing! Tender and delicious, the roll (from Manna House) soaked up the juices wonderfully providing an entirely enjoyable experience with every bite. The crab comes in a home-made lemon mayonnaise, and Kip declared it better than the beef (I wouldn't agree, they were both excellent and I preferred the warm temperature of the beef to the cold crab). B&B had proved to be so good we stopped by again on Sunday - this time I had crab on 'tarragon salted chips' and Kip had crab with quinoa salad. Again, he was certain his meal was better (it was very nice) but I'm a sucker for chips and these were perfect, yellow, crispy chips made in their little deep-fat fryer to order. Mr B&B told us he's got the lease for 12 months, so please do pop by and try! There's a couple of great sounding brunch options which I'm keen to try. I was also interested to see what food you can make in a tiny police box! A friendly hello came from within as I studied the menu. The options are simple - crab dressed with lemon mayonnaise or slow cooked rib of beef. Pretty gourmet for a phone box! This can be served on tarragon fries, quinoa salad or on a roll. We decided to go for one of each on chips. The food is fresh and made to order so be patient, remember there is only room for one chef! Our food arrives in cardboard boxes and we happily take our wooden forks and dig in. Delicious! The chips are wonderfully crispy and the tarragon salt is unusual but the aromatic flavour works. The main attractions of the beef and the crab are lovely and soft in contrast to the crunchy potato. The flavours are delicate and tasty. I felt the beef was more of a success as it was hot. Although the crab was delicious it was cold and didn't work as well on the chips. At £6 a box it's not the cheapest but a nice treat. After the other restaurant (named for the Devil, oddly enough) was ridiculously rude, but the staff at Angels with Bagpipes was wonderful! The drinks were great, the food was incredible and probably the best meal we've had the entire time in the UK. We had a crab appetizer and bread. Then for the main course the kids both had the filet, I had the chicken dish and my husband had a carrot risotto. I almost never eat chicken out at a restaurant but this was so tender! Everything on the plate went together very well. My husband loved his risotto too and I agree it was delicious. I hope you can make a trip to this restaurant when visiting Edinburgh. Because I will never - EVER - find a fish supper superior, or perhaps even equal, to the one I had this weekend from the Golden Bite. I travelled to Portobello with Moray L on the express mission of trying the legendary Bite Of Gold after reading Justin G's review, and we were the first ones in when the doors opened at 16:45. The man who greeted us over the counter could not have been happier if he had been a dog in a field full of squirrels. It doesn't seem an exaggeration to say that I suspect frying fish has been his lifelong passion. Because we were so early, we got the first haddock to go into the fryer - clean, white haddock of gobsmacking, Jonah-swallowing proportions which the chap wobbled at us playfully before setting about the battering and frying. At this point - minutes after the doors opened - the shop filled. I mean it properly filled. I know not how many of these were pilgrims like us, and how many were locals, but it's clear that the reputation of The Golden Bite's fish suppers is widely renowned. I was reaching five stars simply from the cleanliness, the rich frying smell, and the chap's jollity before I'd even put anything in my mouth, and when a small girl entered and he pulled down a teddy bear to wave at her, I was smitten with the place entirely. But the food. The food. The proof of the poisson is in the eating. Oh. My. Wrapped lovingly in paper and carried down reverently to the seafront for consumption, these piscine Midas fillets were battered to crispy perfection, but still with the softer underside that makes a fish supper truly sensational. The chips - proper chip shop chips - were glorious and plentiful, but not so numerous as to prevent one from finishing the lustrous, luscious fishywishy that so enchanted both me and Moray. I need to go back. No, you don't understand. I NEED to go back. Now. And I don't think I will ever love a fish supper in quite the same way that I love the Golden Bite's.

A great chip shop that can be found in the Main Street in Portobello…read more Run by Italian husband and wife team serving freshly prepared pizzas, jacket potatoes, I even spotted a battered ribeye steak in the hot display cabinet as well as the famous fish and chips that are cooked to order, for me that is a really good sign of a well run chip shop where the food is fresh and not sitting in a hot box for ages. Crispy batter and cooked just right. I did notice that a plastic sheet A5 size was placed on top of the fish to stop it from sticking to the paper what a great idea, this shop is a must for anyone passing by
