Then the Earl opened. I miss living in marchmont now! The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is the size of it, or lack of it. It holds roughly 30-40 people, so as pubs go it's not huge; although the result is a friendly and welcoming pub with an inviting atmosphere, it does mean that it's sometimes hard to find a seat. The food here is fantastic. It's all home-made according to the menu, and it offers great value for money - you can get a panini & soup combo for £4.95, or if you're after something more substantial you can get macaroni cheese bake for only £3.95, or a huge portion of nachos for 2 to share for £5.95. Despite being in the heart of student-ville, this pub attracts young professionals and students in equal measure - maybe it's the good range of drinks behind the bar, the fancy bar snacks such as wasabi peanuts, or the huge comfy sofas in front of the huge windows with fairy lights overhead. Whatever the reason is, this place works. Don't miss... They have Bulmers on tap here, unlike most places where you have to buy it by the bottle.

During the summer they put out seating on the street so you can have a few chilled out beers outside, which was a nice addition. There is an okay selection of beers, and although not too cheap are really good. As well as the normal beer, wine and spirits they have cocktails, with special offers changing, meaning you can get a pretty good cocktail for good value.The food is pretty tasty as well, especially the Nachos which are hee-owge. The atmosphere is really chilled out, with most people just coming in for a few drinks, but there is a TV for those wanting to watch a bit of sports. Another bonus is that the bar staff are awesome, definitely the friendliest around and make the experience much better than in many other bars.

The staff are friendly, the prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is standard Edinburgh quiet-ish pub. I came here a few times as it is about 100 metres from where a few of my friends live. We came here to watch a few World Cup games and it seemed a pretty nice place. The décor is pretty nice and is styled in the traditional British pub way. Drink prices are pretty good with a pint costing £2.75 and can be a good way of avoiding the price hikes you will find in nearby New Town. There is a good range of drinks available including real ales and malt whiskeys and they do sell food, although not proper meals. They do pies, toasties and hot dogs at pretty decent prices and these certainly complimented the beers we had whilst watching the football. The pub is pretty small however and during the football many people had to stand as there was not enough seats to go round. I will definitely be returning when I next go and see my friends in this part of town.

But, I have to admit, Smithies is a really good pub. It's a total old man boozer (despite the fact that it sells what is apparently very nice champagne?!?!), but not in a smelly way, just in a really friendy way. Everyone who works behind the bar is family - dad, mum, son and daughter, which gives it a really nice vibe. They all obviously care about their establishment as well as their customers. The pints are good and reasonably priced, even the food is nice. It's basic pub fare of soup and toasties but is well done. Smithies is a great relaxed pub hidden away in Canonmills. If you happen to find yourself in here and notice a baldy Glaswegian whose voice carries across county lines, tell him to go home, his girlfriend doesn't want him too hungover in the morning.

Drinks were pricey compared to a lot of other pubs in this area of the city centre, and although it was no more expensive than Teuchters just across the road it lacks the same relaxed and trendy vibe that Teuchters has. Although in its defense, the food menu did look nice and inviting as well as being good value for money, so I'll probably head back here at some point to try it out. I ordered a build-you-own scotch flight with help of bartender. It was cool to enjoy it with his guidance and check out the afternoon locals - including a piper dissembling and cleaning his bagpipes.
