There seemed to be a very homogeneous crowd in the pub that seemed to be from the surrounding neighbourhood, over 60 and male. The inside of the pub is tailored very much in the style of the "traditional" British pub and there is a good selection of drinks to pick from including ales and spirits.

This place is incredible and just infused with the beach vibe. It could very easily been in Venice, California and fit right in. The interior decor is so much and beachy. Our server was a fun woman named Sid and she was just dripping with spunky personality. Friendly, fast, efficient and always smiling. She made our meal even getter just being herself. The fish and chips were tasty, hot and fresh. The real star of the day was the tomato soup. I've never tasted anything quite like it and I figure they make it in house. I suggest ordering a bowl if you find yourself on Portobello Beach. Big thump up for this local eatery.

Drinks All the usual suspects are sold here with the less popular ones being sold out of the bottles. But all the brands sold here are known brands not like the pub across the road where l didn't recognise anything sold there. Weekends I've seen karaoke here towards the weekend and usually when l see them start to set up l know that's my cue to leave. Overall half descent bar if you don't mind the odd old geezer starring you down.

I do have to say it - and I have to go back as heaven forbid there was a redecoration effort here, as that would break my ice-cold heart - the thing I loved about the Ormelie, and has resulted in the treasured place it holds for me, is the wallpaper in the womens' bathroom. With what estate-agents might term a "well-proportioned" garden and a series of bright and cosy adjoining rooms leading from the front door to the bar, it feels as much like a friend's home as it does a beach pub. We arrived on a Sunday to find, to my sheer delight, a session in progress. It seems that live music is a regular feature in the Dalriada week, as if its sweeping views of the ocean weren't sufficient entertainment. A session always, always means extra points from me. I wished I'd brought my mandolin so I could join in, but instead took advantage of the glorious weather to sit on the grass outside and admire the view. As a seaside establishment ought, it caters for pretty much everyone. The bar is well-stocked with a range of beverages and (hoorah) cakes, and they even keep water bowls behind the bar for the many dogs that romp along the sand every day. There was a great family atmosphere when I went, too - little children were out in the garden having a whale of a time. Something that I, a naturally queue-conscious Brit, particularly enjoyed was the bar experience. The bar room itself is a little on the small side and so, rather than the usual game of squashing around the bar and hoping the serving staff have a supernatural ability to remember the order everyone arrived in, there was a nice little linear queue that wimbled out into the next room. That queue scooted along at a good pace, too; that's impressive given the business they were getting on such an unexpectedly gorgeous day. It doesn't all hinge on the weather, though. It seems such a lovely place that I'm almost looking forward to the winter - I do love a bitterly cold walk along the beach and I can't think of a nicer way to round it off than with a spot of music and a hot chocolate while gazing out of the window. Dalriada, please don't go back to the West. Stay here forever so that I can make you part of my every trip to Portobello Beach.

When we arrived at noon (opening time), the restaurant wasn't too busy. There is an impressive bar downstairs with many whiskies. We were led upstairs to the dining area. There is outdoor dining too that would be nice if the weather was warmer. Cool vibe, but it is kind of dark inside the stone walls. The menu is Scottish-focused with seasonal ingredients. We didn't want to overeat, so we decided to share a starter and a main. We got the Scottish venison fritters, which were ok. We enjoyed the pappardelle pasta (roast pumpkin and pecorino sauce, wild mushrooms, spinach, bacon and poppy seed crumb, crispy sage). It was flavorful and didn't feel too heavy. The Fisherman Pie, which was Haddock, Smoked Haddock and Salmon in a Creamy Leek & Chive Sauce, topped with Mash Potato and Isle of mull Cheddar, was delicious. A chicken and bacon burger was ordered and a chicken and bacon burger it was. Where the chicken that this chicken breast came from I don't know but it was definitely doing some serious weightlifting and bulking up. It was MASSIVE, in all it's chickeny beauty I found it hard to resist taking a huge bite out of the burger. Long stoy short, I ended up taking a huge bite out of the burger. The chicken was beautifully juicy for general pub grub and the bacon was lovely, sweet but slightly salted which gelled all the flavours of the breaded chicken and the toasted roll together. Thinking about it now, I'm getting hungry again. Every time I have a pub burger, the side salad always lets it down, every time, it's like the bars expect people not to eat it, but not this bar. The salad was crisp and fresh, served up with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette that was perfect for dipping a wee bit of the roll in. The spirit measures were 35ml and the guest ales on offer covered breweries such as Innis & Gunn and The Inveralmond Brewery (who do beers such as Lia Fail and Ossian) which justified the bar being about 60-70p more expensive than the others we visited.
