Gnudi
Natalie B.

Before an Edinburgh Fringe event, we enjoyed a lovely modern meal at this neighbourhood bistro. I loved the aubergine app with mint pesto - bright colours and flavours and a rich mouth feel. Roast aubergine, apricot chutney, feta & pine nuts. Heavenly. I also enjoyed a gnudi dish, which packed a lot of veggies and flavour. Very good service and a decent drink selection made this experience even better!

Describes itself as a quality neighbourhood bistro, but this undersells it a little. Good food in comfortable setting.

A lot of people don't actually know that there is a large outdoor area in between the bar and…read morehotel which is good for summertime. I sat at the bar area which is usually not too overcrowded. The waiters were very polite and attentive. I ordered the liver, mushroom and bacon as starter. Delicately and perfectly cooked liver. Most of livers I have tried are just overcooked. My main dish was lamb cutlet. Lamb is usually cooked medium / pink but I think this time they have overcooked it slightly. The crust was also not as flavourful as some of the lamb cutler I have tried. However, the beans and potatoes that came with it were perfectly cooked and flavourful. My dessert was the rice pudding. I think the ingredients were excellent when paired with the mandarin oranges. The way they prepare the rice pudding was like creme brûlée with melted sugar at the top of the moulded rice pudding. However, the rice was on a slightly on the dryer and harder texture. Can't really fault this place much but maybe some improvement can be done to further enhance the quality of the food. Wouldn't mind coming again to try the other food on their menu.

I don't think he was very impressed with the shrimp and scallop skewer he added on, and seemed disappointed his chips were just average (though, I don't know why he wanted chips when they had other side options). However, my roast dinner was perfection. Everything on my plate was cooked expertly and the portion size was just right. I also appreciated that they offer mocktails, as I do not drink alcohol. I had one that was a very tasty mix of perfectly ripened fruits such as strawberry and kiwi with lemonade. I definitely plan on coming back for drinks on the sidewalk seating, if not for Sunday dinner again. It was a lovely evening. The only thing that I was not 100% on was the decor. It was a little plain/random and not in a chic minimalist kind of way. Still nice in the old building, though. There were stairs/a lift down to the restrooms.

As the bells and whistles of the evening were organized by someone else, I didn't have any say over the hosting venue.... which can be a bit nerve wracking when you're a little ocd event planner. When Harry's Bar & Grill was mentioned, I immediately took to Google and... proceeded to have a minor panic attack. My Google search brought up the former Harry's Bar and the reviews/photos were about as polar opposite as I'd want for a swanky steak event... I knew they had renovated, but really... how much different could it be? Very. Very freaking different. COMPLETELY different. Thank the event gods! I'm not sure if the staff noticed my audible sigh and not so subtle happy dance when I walked through the door but walking into this beautiful, contemporary room was like Christmas. The space is lovely, polished and a complete 180 from its former inhabitant. They have a great bar space, good outdoor seating and a swanky atmosphere, without being stuffy. Plus: they have wifi. *Happy Dance* So we settled into our evening, where the Harry's Bar team were in charge of grilling up the steaks for our table. No problem there, they happen to have a Josper oven. Read: fancy pants charcoal oven. *Happy Dance* Not to mention, really damn fine chips and a decent whisky selection behind the bar. *Happy Dance* It's also a ten minute walk from my house, is open at lunch... and did I mention the solid wifi? *Happy Happy Happy Dance* Needless to say, what I imagined might be a total train wreck of an evening, turned into one of my most pleasant event surprises. I should be more trusting... especially when steak and chips are involved.

I was one of the lucky few that attended the Yelp event at Harry's which featured a butchery demonstration from Gilmour Butchers. (see all the fab reviews here http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/yelp-workshop-john-gilmour-edinburgh ). We were all blown away by the setting, the atmosphere, the food, the Josper grill but before rushing to review Harry's Bar and Grill, I wanted to come back when it wasn't an event so that I could get a feel for the menu and the service. My husband was so jealous that he couldn't come to the event so we went right back this weekend. Harry's Bar and Grill was relaunched only 2 months ago. I was never there before but rumour has it this refurb is an epic improvement! Well, whoever they hired to do the design totally nailed it. When you head down the stairs off of Randolph place and enter Harry's you instantly feel comfortable and relaxed. All the elements are in balance. Although it is long and thin, it still feels spacious especially at the bar area. As you get to the back, the big booths, exposed stone and brick and rough sawn wood floors and tables are both contemporary and cosy. My hubby instantly declared that he could hang out there all day. (good thing they weren't showing cycling on the big screen Telly or he may just do that!). Now, I already knew that they had the amazing 400C Josper charcoal grill and served prime dry aged Scottish beef from Gilmour Butchers and seafood from my favourite local fishmonger - Welch's; but I also discovered the chefs were Italian. Most people think Italian food is all about the pasta and pizza but Italians seriously know how to work a grill - I've had the best grilled meat and seafood in Italy so I was ready to put the full menu to test. During our event we sampled every single cut of beef and I was ready for more but then I saw the menu. BEST MENU I HAVE SEEN IN AGES! We wanted EVERYTHING. This was a menu put together by people who really wanted to serve the best in local produce and to totally do it justice. I love seafood and this menu had it all - calamari, scallops, seabass, lobster, langoustines....There were only 2 of us and a dozen things we wanted to try. With the help of the smiliest, sweetest waitress we chose: Calamari and crispy seabass fillets for me; Scallops and Rib-eye for the hubby. Sides were the chunky chips that wowed us at the event and the crispy, buttery green veg (which I tried to make at home last night). Everything was cooked to perfection. It was the best calamari I have ever had - I even teased the waiter that I was having more for dessert (in the end I was swayed by chocolate). Don't tell Harry's but it was a really generous portion - I did share a couple pieces with the hubby and still feel like I had plenty. It was big pieces (not skinny rings), lightly dusted with flour and fried to be a little crispy on the outside but the white meat was soft and tender - better than lobster! I only had one set of tentacles which were crispy and salty and tender. The scallops were so fresh that they melted as soon as they hit my tongue. The rest of the meal continued in the same fashion. Fresh, simply cooked, full of flavour. Desserts were basic - but I would say fill up on the fab food and finish with a coffee and a shortbread (also melt in the mouth). The best thing was that this was simple, good food and a reasonable price (3 courses, coffee, Innis and Gunn beer - yes even the beer is local!) for under £80. This is food you can eat on a fairly regular basis. This is a space that you want to hang out in on a regular basis. These were people you want to hang out with on a regular basis. On our way home we reminisced about what might have been one of the best meals we've had in Edinburgh and we hatched a plan - keep coming back until we try the whole menu. See you next week Harry's :D

Really liked it a lot!…read more Came here on a 5pm deal and figured that if it wasn't great then at least there wasn't much lost. Hotel restaurants can be really hit and miss but not here. Nira Caledonia is a boutique hotel in Stockbridge so not somewhere I'd find myself attending usually but a deal is a deal so off I went. I've just realised I was about to score this 4* but actually, when I think through what I'm about to write then I have to give it 5*'s. Not treated like deal scum - little amuse bouche of potato salad with trout and roe - yum, yes please and I don't even like potato salad, but I LOVE it here. Little bread sacks - evil, non GF bread for the friend, plenty of GF bread for me with chive, truffle and ordinary French butter - oh, go on then. Yum, yum. Portions are big, struggled to finish my main - 1/2 pheasant with mash after starter and little extras as mentioned above. Absolutely couldn't do dessert although the plates going passed us looked amazing. If GF, the kitchen can amend dishes to accomodate to let the server know. And what tipped this into 5 stars? The wine. We ordered a Pinot Grigio - I have to confess this is not a favourite of mine as I consider it somewhat bland but yum. Zesty and fresh it worked well with everything we ate. I'd return for this wine alone. So the service was fab, the food, the wine and even on the cheap deal, the food was outstanding. So I'll go back and I'd love to try their steaks which are meant to be amazing!

Inside is a mix of low ceiling, cozy booth areas, long tables great for parties, and a mezzanine that mezzanine with seating that overlooks a high ceilinged bar. Indoors has an elegant rustic feel, with lots of lovely wood and metal touches. Every single member of the staff we interacted with was SO nice and friendly, and they went above and beyond to accommodate our large group! Although our group only gave us a few menu options to choose from, my husband and I also ordered cocktails and their haggis scotch eggs with brown sauce. Their scotch eggs has haggis around them, and the brown sauce wasn't a gravy sauce like I was expecting, but a salty sweet surprise with an eel sauce consistency. These were my favorite! Our starter was the Sweet Potato, Chilli, and Coconut soup. I wasn't a big fan of this. I got no taste of sweet potatoes or coconut, the chilli overwhelmed everything. My husband and I ordered the King Prawn chilli Linguine with a ginger pesto. What we received was a major disappointment- these were by no stretch or the imagination king prawns. They were medium sized at best. Again, the linguine was overwhelmed by the chilli- so much my eyes watered and my nose ran before I gave up. Other diners voiced the same complaints. Dessert was great! Sticky toffee pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream- so delicious! I had a cocktail called Kissing in the rain, a flip containing gin, rhubarb, raspberry, and lemon with an egg white, shaken to perfection. It was delightful- I only with there was more of it! I also had the house white which was tasty, and my husband enjoyed his house ale. All in all, not bad, just lay off the chilli next time!
