Black fig dessert
Tiffany A.

This was my husband and my first Michelin star dining experience and boy did it live up to the hype. Starting with the ambiance, the restaurant was (aptly named) in an old Timberyard. The ceilings were high, the decor was very minimalist, and the lighting was cozy and dimmed. The wait staff was all super attentive and it was unique in that there wasn't one waiter servicing your table the whole night, but rather different waiters would come and give your various tasting courses. The food itself was superb - there were flavors I never tasted/tasted together. My husband and I each got the five course menu for £95, which I thought was pretty reasonable. The meal started with a delightful charcuterie spread featuring delicious sourdough, broth, meat and cheese and this delicious mini loaf. We then had three appetizers - my absolute favorite was the "Girolles" - the broth was umami and delicious, and had some tart black currents and smoky bacon. Left me wanting more for sure. My husband and I each then got a different main to split, I the cod and him the beef. Both had delicious sauces. We finished the meal with a light black fig tart and vanilla ice cream. Overall the experience lasted about three hours and I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh!

It's hard to find the words to describe the care and intent of the food served here. Staff is amazing and it is so obvious that everyone loves what they are serving- and for good reason.

Tasting menus only so it's small plates best done with the paired wine. The serving sizes are small but that's the way this works everywhere on the planet so enjoy each bite and sip. The setting somehow blends sterile walls with warm wood, which removes unnecessary distractions and allows you to focus on the gallery of delicious sculptures the kitchen creates. Inclusive-hipster vibes abound ... everyone is welcome, with or without your black turtleneck. If I had one wish for this restaurant it would be to see it again soon.

What a wonderful addition to the Edinburgh dining scene! Came here with my husband for his birthday and the evening was lovely all around. We ordered the 6 course tasting menu (also added on were 2 amouse bouches as well as a tiny cake for my husband and petit fours at the end) with drinks pairings and the meal was one of the best we've had this year. Started off with a cocktail from the small but interesting list. My trout main was so moist and delicious, gently cooked and incredibly flavorful. My husband's lamb main was also gently cooked to perfection and not heacy or gamey like poorly sourced and prepared lamb can sometimes be. Other standout dishes included a wee tarragon and wild mushroom chowder that we both could've easily downed by the gallon, it was just too good. Torched mackerel with buttermilk and sorrel... A giant duck egg cooked low and slow with foraged mushrooms and shaved truffles. Creamy, satisfying and packed with flavor. The only blip was the pigeon course, which was kind of tough. Took a bit of elbow grease to slice through it. We were both full and happy after the 6 courses, although we thought about going for the 8 earlier. The drinks pairings were very well thought out. Mostly small batch wines from France, Italy and Germany. A lovely fizzy mead from London was paired with dessert. Most of the wines would be fine to drink on their own, but they paired beautifully with their respective courses. The wee cake they gave my husband was a beautiful pleasant surprise. Delicious too! The vanilla sponge was somehow dense but incredibly light at the same time. The interior is airy and relaxed. You're having a premium dining experience with outstanding food and knowledgeable staff that seem to very much appreciate good food and drink themselves. Can't wait to come back!

The MENU!

I so glad they kept the big doors from the original Lawson's Timber just adds charm to the place. Firstly the food is devine. Secondly the service is friendly, relaxed and very knowledgable. Thirdly I will come back for more. To start we ordered a sauvigion blanc, which came from Marlborough, New Zealand. Tis was delicious on the palate. It went well with all 4 courses I had choosen from the menu. The little bite was a lobster broth. Starters was a crab, creme fraiche, horseradish, spiced bread. I choose smoked pork loin, belly, onion, artichoke for the mains and to finish was Marshmallows, chocolate, spiced oats, fig, milk. The serving are quite small but I was quite full by the end - quite full and happy! I'm chuffed to say we have something like this in Ediburgh and I've finally now experienced it!

I havn't dined at that many high end restaurant so Im certainly unable to give a proper connoisseur-like review. I doubt they would be on yelp anyway. To my untrained taste buds, everything was simply amazing. The pairings of spices, sauces, and ingredients were unconventional and unique. Same goes for the cocktails and there was a long list of whisky choices (no surprise there) as well as local brewery beers. The menu was sectioned into Bite, Small, Large, Sweet, it was perfectly filling to have all four courses per person. The interior was extremely stylish, down to the restroom area (with a soundtrack of thunderstorm that is oddly soothing). The music in the main dining hall was a mix of typical indie but was played at a minimum level and will not disturb conversations. The staff were well trained, attentive but not overbearing.

On a Friday evening the place was packed and we had to book pretty far in advance so needless to say the atmosphere was buzzing. Its in an old timberyard obviously and has a lovely rustic charm, floor to ceiling wine rack and a wood burning stove. What more do you need?! The staff were lovely - knowledgeable and enthusiastic and very helpful. Make sure you order the shrub cocktail its amazing with or without an oyster or two! They have a 4 course set menu (you can have less if you want although you would have to be mad!) The idea is that you have a bite, then a starter, your main and a dessert. For £22 its pretty darn good value I think. All the dishes we had were tasty and delicious and with some opting for the a la carte we tried quite a few. My favourite was the soused mackerel and the venison. The place has loads of locally sourced, home smoked or cured and exciting dishes to tempt you. I love this place, its a bit more expensive than some places but is perfect for a celebration or romantic dinner...

Great food and awesome atmosphere! We were there for my brothers wedding reception and the service and food was on point! The atmosphere is so cool with the lighting and outdoor area! Easy to fine! Look for the big red door!

Nice location but the chef is trying too hard in my opinion. Al dente cuisine is too Al dente. Promised so much but rather disappointing.

We were able to be seated upstairs. This place is busy (much busier when we were finished for sure). So if you can, I'd suggest reserving a spot. It's a bit loud in here. Not out of the ordinary for a busy place. We started with the pressed pork belly app. Perfect crisp. Could've used more of the celeriac puree bed. The confit shallots were so good and nicely sweet. Black pudding cubes (small. More of these!). Candied pears. Mmm. Great start. Wife got the char grilled venison on a butternut squash purée and spicy daikon planks (I didn't find the heat, she did tho!). It was excellent and perfectly prepared. Not gamey at all. I got the 35 day aged hangar steak. This is hands down one of the best steaks I have had out in a very long time. So well seasoned! Which was such a pleasant surprise as it left me wanting for nothing to add flavor. The hand cut fries were good but did need some salt. No dessert as, well, our server was scattered a bit all night. We asked for the dessert menu. She brought us dinner menus and we didn't see her for 10 minutes. So we opted to leave, a bit disappointed at the end. We would come back tho. Thats for sure.

When our food arrived we finally asked to move spots but the back of the restaurant was just as bad. I can't believe other families weren't complaining. We came in excited about this place, and the restaurant had open tables at about 6:50pm on a Friday ... we had just walked all day and were starving with a 2-year old and an elderly after walking all over town and sightseeing all day long. However, was told by this girl that they didn't have a seat for us. Although there was no wait, no one ahead of us and empty tables. I told her she could seat us in that booth, we didn't mind since our 2 year old wouldn't be eating. However, she cut me off and said that would not work. I thought that was weird but that should have been That it would take them about 30 minutes to get us a table. We walk around in the cold, come back to the restaurant ... there are plenty of open tables. My husband takes my 2-year old inside to wait so she is not in the freezing rainy cold (especially since she was sniffling). The hostess then says it's going to take longer and that we must wait outside the restaurant. We tell her it's cold, and we've been waiting. She then says ... "This isn't going to work, I'm not serving you. You guys can leave." She did not want to serve of us this entire time! She could have told us when we first walked in, but made us wait and walk around outside in the cold rain with a 2-year old and an 88-year old ... then decides she doesn't want to serve us. We walked in at 6:50pm, came back at 7:30pm, waited until 7:45pm when she told us she wouldn't serve us. By this time all the other restaurants were fully reserved or with 1-2 hour waits. We ended up not able to have dinner that night, and got snacks from the grocery store. DO NOT COME HERE UNLESS YOU WANT HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! NEVER TREATED THIS BADLY BY A RESTAURANT!

I said for the size of our group can we get the other tables towards the back. There were other tables available and all right behind us. The hostess said no absolutely not guests were to be assigned to their tables. There were people behind us but they were after us; plus they were of smaller size than ours, clearly our skin color is the main issue. They sat us down, and quite a few minutes pass, others trickle in and promptly everyone bumps into me. At which point I told the hostess this is not acceptable. They sat 2 people at a table for 4, in the back while this table of 4 is really too small for 4 people. One thing stood out to me, we were the only non whites. When the last group again bumped into me, I asked to be moved; she then said due to short of staff they cannot change the seating but seeing seriously everyone is bumping into me, she begrudgingly moved us to a corner table with no lights - and not surprisingly no service. I understand the importance of trying to make the white people feel comfortable about not being seen with non whites - the best way is tuck the non whites away - but this is 2022. I am from California and no, this is absolutely unacceptable.
