There is a nice variety of seafood on offer on the menu but the better choice is to select your fish from tonight's specials on the wall. That's what we did and we were very satisfied. The wine menu is limited. We chose a Pouilly Fuse that was unfortunately not drinkable. The staff were kind enough to take it back. I then chose the IPA that was much better. The appetizer recommended by our server was the mussels. These were best mussels I've ever enjoyed. It was served with a sauce made with garlic, butter, milk, and onion. It's good enough to be a soup! Our sides included brocholini and halumi. Both were excellent. The brocholini was flavorful and crunchy with a nice sauce-though know that the sauce has ham in it. The cheese, lightly fried is served with a spicy sauce that I really enjoyed, bit was too much for my wife. It was superb. We selected the monkfish and sea bass for our mains. Both were excellent, moist and flavorful fish-generous portions of each. This was an extremely satisfying and enjoyable meal. It was I've of our best in Scotland. We were frankly unable to eat more and we didn't have dessert.

So I went back the next day by myself, I did rsvp for 1 for 3pm, which was't necessary. After looking at the menu, went with: - Haddock & Chips with mushy peas. One thing I do like about this place was that, they offer different fish options, but no cod, thus I went with haddock. They do better job with frying their fish. The fish and the batter did not fall apart. The mushy peas was not my cup of joe :) When you walk in, to your right is the kitchen, where you can order for take out, walk towards the left to go to the dining room. The service was mediocre, thus only three stars. The wait staff rarely stopped by to check on you or refill your water, you had to hunt them down to get more water.

When I buy seafood - it makes a big impression that I can actually see the sea and boats from the store. Now add in years of experience, a super clean and shiny shop, great variety, friendly staff and of course fresh FISH. Whole fish, fillets, 'steaks', shellfish - langoustines with the whiskers still twitching, a giant tank of lobster, piles of mussels and loads of extras. They have smokies, smoked haddock, cold smoked salmon and my favourite - their own Hot Smoked Salmon. You can even get slices of these vac packed (well - they can vac pack anything for you) to keep in the fridge for a few days. Soft, flaky, smoky, delicate - great cold or gently warmed up. All this is set at the quaint Newhaven harbour - completely with picturesque lighthouse, dock with seats to sit and watch the boats from and a couple of restaurants. Makes it all worth the trip!

Live crayfish in huge tanks adorn a wall, filleted & whole fish, shellfish, prawns, you name it, they'll most likely have it. The most endearing point to make is the fact that rather than reside behind a counter, the fishmongers mix amongst the patrons and take an active interest in showing their produce in best light. Tesco, Morrisons, ASDA and the like, take note...this is seafood and that is service at it's best! Bravo!

I have never seen a fishmongers so busy; on saturday mornings you can see people actually queuing outside just to pick up some prawns or whatever. I mean how many places can you say that about. And the fish is incredible. Having bought the aforementioned prawns (didn't queue though - not because they're not worth it, just because I'm really lazy) I can safely say they're the best in Edinburgh. They are absolutely huge, really fresh and tasted amazing. The rest of the food is awesome as well, even if you're just picking up a piece of haddock or something then it is the best place around. Admittedly slightly more expensive than the supermarkets, but when you're getting fish of this quality that is fresh every day then you can't really complain.

Although it's right in the middle of student-ville, Eddie's is well-known all over the city and once you've bought from here it's easy to see why. The staff are not only friendly but also really knowledgeable. When I went in I needed things to make a fish pie, although I didn't know which fish would be best for it. Rather than simply trying to flog me the most expensive fish they had, the guy was very patient with me and showed me loads of different options. When I used to live in Marchmont I used to see the new deiliveries coming in every day (on the rare occasions I was up early enough, that is!), so you can always be confident that the stuff they have is fresh.

The place has very limited seating inside, they have a large picnic table and few tables out by the street, but the place does get busy. Most of the folks coming here were getting their orders to go. WARNING, they only have one register, you order first and if you are dining in, they will bring you the food. What the cashier won't ask you, is if you need tartar sauce, etc, it's assumed you know how to order. On top of that, the young lady working the registered looked beyond flustered and overwhelmed working. We waited about 5 minutes before we ordered (everything is a la carte, so if you forget to order something, you need to get back in line and order them). We got the following: - Battered Haddock with chips special (comes with a drink) x 2 - Calamari - Onion Rings - Chicken tender salad We got our food, then realized we had to order the tartar sauce, etc. So go back in line, by this time I had to wait 10 minutes to get: - Tartar sauce x 3 - Ketchup (yes they charge you for ketchup) - side order of curry The haddock - first time experiencing fish & chips in Scotland, I walked away from here very disappointed. The fish is NOT seasoned, very bland and the batter fell off the fish. It seemed like there was no binding agent between the fish and the wet batter. The onion ring was too greasy and calamari was decent. The saving grace was the gravy, definitely get the gravy to dip your chips in. Why two stars? - staffing - the cashier could have asked if this was our first time or not... and if it was, then explain that everything is a la carte. Don't assume that folks coming here knows how to order and force them to get back in line to get the condiments. tables - tables with eaten plates everywhere. It seems they foregone the cleaning the tables to take orders and get the lines moving. I think we would walked away with a lot better experience if things were explained to us. Was it worth spending 90 pounds with tip? No.
