Can't say enough good things about this place; there really aren't any other good Tex-Mex places in Brooklyn (this end of Brooklyn, at least). The place is very spacious (second floor is huge and there's an outdoor garden), the margaritas are delicious, and the food always comes out in huge portions -- a welcome relief given that surrounding restaurants charge the same price but give you half the portion. I usually come in towards the end of the week and hang out at the bar which is really an excellent centerpiece when you walk in: a great, big wooden bar with the Texas longhorn hanging in the middle of it. They have only one TV in the place (at the end of the bar) as far as I know, but the bartenders are nice enough to put on any game you want, so that's a big plus. It's just a friendly, welcoming place. I don't know if some of these reviewers are paid by neighboring restaurants to write dour reviews about this place or if those other reviewers just wanted to test their creative writing skills (I think there are writing studios for that!), but I can't think of a single downside to this place . . . one reviewer said that they were disappointed that the cash-only mandate wasn't stated more specifically upfront, and, on that one point, I can commiserate; I was a bit surprised when I first learned that, as well. Massively disappointing. i grew up eating good Tex Mex and real Mexican food. This was literally a plate full of spicy slop. They used American cheese on the enchiladas for god sake. There is a lot to like about Lobo. The service is exceptional and nonintrusive. The prices are non offensive and you get a lot of food. The drinks are big and tasty. We ordered the Diablo Sol Food to go with our huge basket of homemade tortilla chips. It's excellent with a surprising amount of chili instead of just a bit at the top. However, that's where most of the positives end. The main entrees-- I ordered the Pancho Villa Especial and my love ordered Molly's Chicken and Cheese. Again for $14 you get a huge plate with rice and actually tasty refried beans. But the tacos and enchiladas leave a lot to be desired. I found the meat bland and slightly chewy. The tacos were kind of loosely together. None of the tastes, spices or sauces were strong. It felt like something I could have made at home and that's not why we go out. Lobo's is one of the few genuine restaurants where you can just go by yourself and chill. The staff is really funny and laid back and dont bug you too much. The food is ok thus the 4 and not 5 stars. Ask Jett the bartender for their signature margarita. I was given a sip to taste and it was delicious. The crowd there are regulars who come by to hang out... not to pick up dates, not to look cool or anything else but just to hang out because it is a chill neighborhood bar where everyone wants to relax and have a drink. Lobo is such a solid spot. We need to up this average to at least 4 stars. Casual date night? Lobo. Friends in town? Lobo. Hangover brunch? Lobo. Huge portions, authentic and good food, quirky yet cozy atmosphere, and solid prices. An added plus, I've not once felt rushed while dining here. Sat with girlfriends laughing and chatting for probably 30 minutes after we paid (nobody was waiting for a table, promise!) and our server kept refilling our waters with a smile. I used to visit the Park Slope location all the time and miss it dearly, so I occasionally hop over here. The owner is the same, and some of the staff moved over when the other location closed. The service at both locations was always great. The bartenders were great at reading you; occasionally I would come alone and they were chatty if I felt chatty and would let me be if I just wanted to read (a lesson some bartenders need to learn). I love their margaritas (I get the blood orange with a tiny splash of raspberry). They'll give you as many chips as you can eat. My friends have always been happy with their food, and it's very reasonably priced. This applies to both brunch and dinner. Met up w/ some friends here after work one day. One of those days were you want a meal that isn't fussy and a good drink. I definitely got that here. The had the sangre de lobo drink...recommended by the cute waiter. It was definitely a different drink...but very good... cinnamon tequila margarita... I know.. different, but a great choice. Finding a legit Tex-Mex place is hard. And all my southern friends yell when you don't bring them to a legit Tex-Mex spot. You gotta have those chips and salsa when you sit down, or it ain't Tex-Mex. During this Covid-19 lockdown period, restaurants that can offer take out meals have the luxury of still being able to conduct business. An intelligently run establishment would thus make sure that it had the ability to give its contact info and menu details to any potential patrons, and ensure friendly customer service regarding any inquiries. Clearly, these are features that have escaped the management and staff of Lobo. For a place with adequate, but hardly rave worthy offerings, they act as if they are a hot, secret underground club. When asking for a menu, you are told to take a picture of the one hanging in the window - which is limited and eliminates over half of the website listings. Orders can only be given in person or by phone, not online. Since these are the only options, someone with a brain at Lobo might hit upon the idea to post the phone number with the menu, instead of rudely telling people, "to go Google it." For a venue that is barely distinguishable from your average Chipotle at higher prices, one can find much better Tex Mex restaurants in the vicinity. read more

My wife and I visited Lobo restaurant Monday and we were glad we did! We loved it! The chicken enchiladas and the beef Chalupa's were very delicious! better than what we expected. The ambience was very very nice... very cozy and comfortable. We sat upstairs which was even more better. Lobo has a moderate amount of Mexican nostalgia which gave it a nice feel as well. (Not over done). They also have downstairs seating but it's a small area and has a professional bar. The service was very very friendly & professional. Our waitress was Celia. First of all, the place looks very cute. It was insanely hot yesterday so I don't even blame them for being too hot inside. I have never had to just order drink and appetizers and leave. They brought the chips (best thing we had actually) and salsa (free). The salsa was SO spicy that not even drinking water would make it better. Not even my husband, who likes spicy food, could handle that. Next we had the guacamole, which had huge chunks of jalapeño and was also very spicy. Not to mention it was almost liquid. We couldn't finish that either. For drinks we ordered sangria, which seems like a safe choice. It had WAY too much cinnamon... we ended up just getting the check and leaving. I got sick from the beef and contacted them immediately the next day. While I was eating it and noticed the raw beef I told my server it didn't look cooked (it came out 5 minutes after we ordered it as well) and she said it looks like that to a lot of people but it's their seasoning that turns it red. My photo is being uploaded. I know what raw beef looks like. Especially since I got physically sick. The manager called me and said they cook the meat in batches and use the same meat over several days. It gets heated multiple times and he even tried to say my intake of their margarita probably had something to do with me being sick. They weren't the slightest bit interested in making sure their meat was properly cooked. This is a very serious issue and they should take responsibility for their food. Just left this place. First of all we walked in and immediately felt the vibe of a dying institution. A few people at the bar getting drinks. Sort of a hanging misery in the air. We should have turned around but were hungry and determined. Let me describe the walk back to the garden patio. As we passed the kitchen I made eyes with the kitchen staff. Those guys did not look happy to be there. Activity was at a bare minimum. I think the last guy stuck in the back part of the kitchen closest to the patio mouthed the words "Help us." We made it outside and there were two or three other tables there. They made eyes at us too. It reminded me of when you're seated near the back of a plane next to the toilets and you and the other customers exchange a look of mutual doom. As if to underline this we were seated next to another table despite numerous other free tables. We asked to be moved and it seemed like a chore for the staff. Then it seemed like a chore to have to wipe this vacant table down for us. We ordered loaded nachos and veggie fajitas. I can describe the food as such: I could envision a long plastic tray full of canned pickled jalapeños (Jesus is it that hard to chop some fresh jalapeños??they are dirt cheap and taste better!) chopped tomatoes also possibly out of a can, premade guacamole and cheese possibly out of jars and plastic bags. All these shoveled on top of microwaved tortilla chips with a side of prepackaged sour cream. The fajita tortillas were store bought, clearly, and stale. It was gross. The atmosphere outside was oppressive despite a sunny day. No music, nothing to distract you from the food and sloppy presentation and sporadic service. We weren't checked up on often despite having a child with us. The margarita with house made (shocked) tequila was surprisingly good. That has to be the only reason this place can afford to keep its doors open. Also "cash only" is annoying, but not at all surprising considering the quality of enterprise this place appears to be. The first time I went to Lobo I had their battered fish 'n chips which was so good, I was left licking my lips. I thought the fish seemed slightly wet inside but, kept eating as the flavor was amazing. After several hours however, I had a very runny stomach and realized the fish had been undercooked as, my boyfriend had had the fish too and experienced the same symptoms. I did however give Lobo a second, third and fourth try and have never been disappointed again. I highly recommend their burgers as they are flame-grilled and taste utterly amazing. Their flavored margaritas are also to die for and is part of the reason I keep going back (they do them virgin too, which I discovered when I was pregnant). The only suggestions I'd make is: 1) Don't take a vegetarian there as options will be limited. 2) If you have the fish, be sure to ask them to cook it well. Lame. In a hood with so many great restaurants, I'm suprised this one has survived. The free chips and salsa were the tastiest part of the meal. the "guacamole" was just mushed up avocado. Not that I don't love mushed avocado, but I don't call it guac - that's like calling a boy a man. The veggie tacos were barely heated corn tortillas with grilled peppers and musrhooms in them - nothing else! no salsa, no sour cream, no beans, no nada! Folks, that's not a taco. If the entirety of my experience had been to come to this place, described to me as really good Mexican food, and have sangria, chips and salsa out back, it might have been a four-star review. There's nothing wrong here, per se, as the back patio is fantastic when the weather's nice and no one really came out to bother us to come back inside because it was too late. The sangria, red especially, is absolutely tasty (it was strongly orange-flavored, of which I'm a big fan) and the obligatory complimentary chips were big and crispy and the salsa, though not chunky, was sufficiently spicy and tasty. Food, however, was bland and not particularly great, and had we not ordered main courses, that probably would have been fine. The fajita chalupa was ordered with beef, but came veggie only and the quesadilla was nothing special, and particularly soggy by the end. Both came with a heaping helping of sour cream, which just seems unnecessary if you're making really good Mexican food. Service was adequate, though we lost our server for a bit in the middle I can kind of chalk that up to watching us talking, and probably not interrupting. There's a ton of seating, way more than I noticed upon walking in, and the ones next to the front windows seem to be the most coveted. I was already hungry when we went to Cobble Hill Theater to check out a post-work flick, so I was STARVING afterward. I had already scoped out Lobo as an option for our movie-and-a-dinner date, but I won't make that same mistake again. We were seated right away, but waited an inordinate amount of time to get any sort of attention from anyone. When we were finally able to order, we each picked enchilada dishes, and were uniquely disappointed by each of our meals. Megan said her "sassy mama" enchilada's tasted like spicy Hamburger Helper if you swapped out stale corn tortillas for the noodles. My "chipotle shrimp" enchiladas were super fishy and featured chopped up shrimp that had been poorly deveined (or not deveined at all). Two stars for the food. Add one star for the drinks. FOOD: Karim used to live in south Los Angeles and then Little El Salvador in VA, so Karim knows Latin food. Chips and salsa are apparently the staple of every tex-mex joint nowadays, and the salsa here wasn't bad. But the "Over-stuffed Burrito" I ordered was stuffed with mediocrity. Beer and vodka are my usual drinks of choice, but I couldn't pass up the massive margaritas this joint was serving. I went with the sangre de lobo, which was a blood orange base mixed with cinnamon-infused tequila. It was good to go, and after a second one, I was good to go. What is it with Okies and Brooklyn? (I mean, besides Woody Guthrie.) :) They make a damn fine margarita on the rocks (with salt please), which really hit the spot after a long workday. I could, and have, stuffed myself on the complimentary chips and salsa. The guacamole is up to lisa standards (and I have high ones. Okay, fine, I'm a snob), and as I have mentioned in my other Lobo review, the fried okra is also a must. I usually get the veggie tacos and can never finish all three which are stuffed with portabello mushrooms, onions and peppers. I've been a semi-regular here for 5 years, so I was surprised to find the average-3-star rating for this place. Then I read the reviews. OK, I get it. The service is reliably bad. If your restaurant has the balls to claim itself as the "best Tex Mex" and then put on its menu cover a map that shows ... from Austin to Brooklyn ... you BETTER DAMN SERVE REAL TEX MEX. First of all: THE QUESO: Man, I've been dying for queso. Anyone I tell about queso here in NYC has no idea what it is. So when I came to Lobo and ordered queso, I expected to get... real queso. What our queso looked like to me was a huge pot of melted Velveeta and a huge chunk of ground beef. There was WAY too much beef in there, not to mention it was dry and flavorless. The cheese was way too cheesy, too thick, and once again ... flavorless. Maybe if you added some guacamole in there or SOMETHING. God, it was horrible. THE NACHOS: Wow. Wow. I don't think I can even call these nachos. First of all, the chips in nachos should be CRISPY, not completely soggy. You couldn't even pick up a chip without it ripping. Second, all of the ingredients should be baked in the oven together on top of the chips so they all melt together. It looked like they just piled some ground beef on one corner, some sour cream and guac on another corner, some lettuce and tomato on another corner, and cheese and beans on another corner. No. THE QUESADILLAS: Now, I don't know how you can mess these up. First of all, they were as flat as a pancake and TINY. They tasted okay but it's only because there are like... what, 2 ingredients in there? --- Finally, the service was horrible. We told our waitress that we needed to hurry because we were trying to catch a movie. We sat at our table w/ our empty basket of chips and queso for 10 minutes before she came to refill it. Then, the table next to us received their food before us even though they sat down after us. They offered to give us our appetizer for free, but who gives a crap about that? It was pure shit anyway! I saw they offer breakfast tacos and migas on their breakfast menu. I give them kudos for putting those on there for "authenticity" purposes, but I sure am scared to try them. All I have to say is... Don't mess with Texas. If you're going to have a Tex-Mex restaurant, use real and fresh ingredients. Take your time in making the dishes. Don't have horrible service. Maybe hire someone who knows what the hell he's doing. And don't charge so much if you know your food is shit. read more

Rude, rude, rude. Its been a very long time since I walked out of a restaurant. But i walked out of this one. Waitress was SO RUDE!! I'm not sure what was even wrong with her. But she was livid the whole time she served me. I stopped in after a spa treatment to enjoy a calm, solitary dinner. I sat in the bar area to keep it simple & quick. Boy was that a mistake. She was really angry, like boiling over...and she took it out on me for some reason. Eventually she abandoned my table and a busser took over. And although all of the registers have swiping mechanisms, they claim to be cash only. What a joke! My spa is across the street so I'll just take my credit card & business to the myriad other restaurants on Court Street. read more
