Stopped by for ice cream with my family this evening and was glad I did. Loard's has plenty of parking in the surrounding area, and the shop has a ton of indoor and outdoor seating. The interior has that old-school ice cream parlor vibe. Our server was super friendly, offering us plenty of samples. She was patient and didn't rush us either, which was greatly appreciated. I ended up getting the Maple Walnut in a sugar cone and that was delicious, it reminded me of a maple donut in the best way possible. I had caught on the phone wanted to know if they had black walnut in stock they did I drove down there. It was crazy traffic because there was a rodeo parade in Castro Valley that particular day but hey, I still got my ice cream. The price went up the tub went up to 1850 wow that's gas and then the Quart went up to $11.20 but maybe I should've went to the factory in San leandro but hey I got my ice cream that's all that matters I'm beyond there was nice. I like the remodel in the Castro Valley store and I would like to thank the young lady that answered the phone and assisted me and made sure they had the black walnut ice cream in stock before driving all the way down there so big up to the staff at Castro Valley Loards. can't forget the atmosphere the ambience nice music. Loard's Ice Cream has been in this location for decades. Since it's founding in 1950, the owners are the same, still using the same recipe. This location is the biggest i've seen so far in their mini-chain. They also sell chocolates, candies, the usual ice creamery menu. There's table service too. Ice cream is good, I can't complain about that. Service at this location not so good. Got there at about 840, and there was a line out the door they close at 9 PM. I was to be serviced and they decided to ring up the lady behind me who was buying some self-serve pints. They then proceeded to make her ice cream cones I had of mine, which was kind of rude and unappreciated. As we sat down and ate at 8:55 PM I'm guessing the owner is who she was, basically made announcement that they were closed and everybody had to get out. At least that's how we interpreted it. We only went here because we are in the area and we always stay loyal to the great service and they will stay open until the last customer is served. read more

This was my fist time here. The ice cream was good. I tried the Ube flavor and it was delightful. Texture was creamy and tasted homemade. I arrived about 25 mins before closing and it seemed like the Asian lady behind the counter was already cleaning up and getting ready to close up shop. I asked for a taste of the ice cream before making a decision to purchase and was given a questioning look and asked "You want to try it?"....almost as if it would be a slight inconvenience for her to serve me a taste. Eventually, she handed me a small spoonful to try and I did make the purchase, but I thought the service was so-so. I don't know if it was because it was late in the evening or if the server just isn't happy with her job, but whatever the case is.... I think if customer service was better, it would make customers feel more welcomed. Overall, I think the shop appears to be clean with ample seating. They carry a wide variety of flavors of ice cream, which is great. But this isn't one of those places that has left me craving for more. I don't think I would make a special trip here to get ice cream...but if I happen to be in the neighborhood, I'd give it another shot. read more

Great local business with such an old school ice cream parlor feel. Everything is pink and white with some outdated graphics on the walls. It wasn't busy but there was only one older Asian lady working so it took a little while. All ice creams are covered which is a nice change from other ice stores... Their menu is extensive so it's hard to choose what to go with. It's also affordable too. I ordered their seasonal brownie nut fudge and it hit just the spot! The person who helped us wasn't very friendly and wanted to be somewhere else. My wife had to ask the counter person twice to sample a flavor. I had a bad experience at this location in 2022. Just bad customer service from a older clerk. Well today 10/17/2025 I decided to give them another try. I walked into this location to order two scoops of black walnut ice cream. The clerk pulled out a very small cone to put the scoops on. As I a waiting another lady flew from the backroom of the store and snatch about 6 dollars worth of one dollars bills out of the tip jar. I am thinking what the hell is all of that about. I hope she did not think I was going to take the money. I thought that jester was weird. I was going to leave a tip for the over priced ice cream on the baby cone. Located in the Castro Valley village, Loard's is the perfect place to grab an after dinner cone or a post bowling sundae. They have a very whimsical setup that reminds me of an old ice cream parlour. Walking in, you're greeted by tons custom Loard's chocolates, gummies and assorted candies. The old school diner setup is a nice touch, with the white tables and chairs with the pink cushions. This place gives me all the childhood feels. I had the pumpkin ice cream on a sugar cone, which took me back to the holidays. We came here after a grueling, stressful, and competitive game of golf....mini golf. Where it was the adults took on the kids and the adult with the lowest score would be the one to buy everyone's ice cream.
