I took an exceptionally weird vehicle to Darrell at Lloyd's eight years ago and, after a bit of laughter, he did a lot of research on my differential. That was followed by some mechanical magic and a few very nice welds, all of which sent me on my way with some newfound automotive superpowers. So I have been trying to have this shop take my money for a long time and they jost will not. I have an 88.5 Suzuki Samurai project car that has been sitting for over 16 years. I thought I was having some transmission issues but it was diagnosed as a bad cable and I should also do a fluid swap. They walked me through the process and encouraged me to wrench on my own ride. It was really easy and after was all said and done I probably saved over 1k changing all the fluids and installing the lift and new clutch cable. What I found is the cable was frayed in a hidden spot so the clutch was always engaged. If you are looking for an honest shop that specializes in Jeeps, transmissions, clutches, and powertrain upgrades this is the place. I went on a trip to visit my family over in the Tucson area and found Lloyd's. I'm really happy I did!! Darrell and his father Lloyd took the time and helped me with some minor problems I was having with my Toyota and saved me tons of money and were upfront and honest(which rarely happens these days)! I liked them so much they even helped me find a new lift kit for my 4 runner since I had been wanting to go bigger and the one I had was causing me some issues. Lisa(his wife) was on top of everything too and made my life easier and went above and beyond and shop I have ever been too has done for me! After having less luck at other shops, I finally took my Jeep to Lloyd's and was instantly relieved to find someone who took as much pride in their work as I do. I simply stopped by to ask about getting it in, and after an hour, he had taken a jack to the parking lot, and test drove my vehicle (while he clearly was booked solid). After talking to him, I knew we thought on the same level when it came to doing things correctly, and knew I could trust him 100%. Yes, Lloyd's is definitely as good as it gets! Short summary: They are honest, skilled, and totally reasonably priced. Now for the details... Darrell is the owner and Lloyd's son. They've been in business for 30+ years without advertising and only rely on word of mouth (Note: If your business survives only on word of mouth, then you must be pretty durn good at what you do!) About 13 years ago, Darrell bought the business from Dad and now Dad works for Darrell. They love their job. And they are really good at it. And if you don't watch out, they will talk your ear off because they are so friendly. They only work on manual transmissions. They can do other stuff, too. If they can't, they have reliable friends (like in AC or electrical stuff) that are right across the street that are just as reliable and honest that they can send you to. I thought my tranny went out on my Toyota. I had it towed here due to the singular review here on this business which also sent me researching the Car Talk website reviews on this place. This is the real deal. Turns out it was a CV axle that was broken. Turns out that two motor mounts are completely shot. Turns out that they probably contributed to the axle breaking. Why didn't my last garage tell me about the motor mounts' problems and what they could cause? Turns out that the bad motor mounts probably contributed to the exhaust manifold cracking, too. Something we've been putting up with for the last year or so. Repaired everything efficiently and very reasonably priced. Got problems with your car? Call them and see if they can help. If they can't, they will tell you. And they will tell you who to call, too. read more

The manual transmission on my 2009 Toyota Matrix stopped working last month. Since I could no longer shift gears while the engine was running I assumed that my clutch would have to be replaced. I checked out a few repair shops and was quoted between $1500 and $2000 for the repair. Finally drove a friend's car to Lloyd's, and Darrell questioned me about the problem I was experiencing. After going over the symptoms, he explained that since my clutch had not been slipping, the problem was most likely caused by the simpler (and much less expensive) failure of the clutch slave cylinder. This is a simple $70 mechanism, in a separate hydraulic system, that makes the clutch release when you step on the clutch pedal. After talking with Darrell, he convinced me that I could make this relatively simple repair before possibly paying big bucks to replace a perfectly good clutch. A few days later my old transmission was working like new. As mentioned in other reviews, this business is run by a family of the highest integrity that seem ultimately motivated by making sure that every one of their customers is happy to have met them. This place is a hidden gem. They do suspension lifts, transmissions, axles, and more. I took my 2021 Jeep Gladiator to them for a re gear (ring and pinion) and could not be happier with the end result. The genuine customer first attitude and experience cannot be beat, at least in Tucson. Before you consider taking your vehicle to any other place, go give this place a visit. I took my car to Lloyds to get differential work done on my vehicle and dealt with Darell throughout the whole experience. Before bringing my car to Lloyds, I had it at a different mechanic in town that was trying to squeeze money out of me. I was frustrated by the quotes this other mechanic was giving me. When I spoke to Darrell, he knew exactly what had to be done to fix my vehicle without even looking at it in person! He went over the previous quote I had been given over the phone with me and showed me exactly where the other mechanic was trying to pull the wool over my eyes and get me to pay more money. You could tell Darrell knew what he was talking about and was honest in his speech. Eventually I decided to just bring my vehicle to Lloyds and have them do the work (for less than half the price of my original quote!). You can tell the people at Lloyds are hard working, honest, and intelligent people that sincerely want to help you get your vehicle in tip top shape. I appreciate their passion and friendliness they showed me throughout the whole experience. Got a transmission type problem? Bring it here if you can. They've been around forever, they have good reviews on the cartalk website, and apparently my Dad went there about 20 years ago with a problem of his own. Why are they so awesome? My dad's story first: He had Maaco or some similar chain transmission store do a transmission rebuild for him, but it wasn't working right. He took it to Lloyd's.Turned out they had put in the wrong fluid, and installed an external valve the wrong way around. Cost to fix: $5. Why? "You already paid enough to have it done wrong, shouldn't have to pay much to get it done right." And mine: My truck had suddenly developed a chattering clutch. Armed with cartalk reviews, I headed down there. An older fellow came out when I came in, said that the shop was word of mouth and just him and his son. I mentioned my problems, and he said "Better check your fluids!" Clutch and brake fluids were both low. He went inside, grabbed a can of brake fluid, filled them both up. Drove the truck around a bit with me to confirm the noise and told me to call back on Monday if driving it around over the weekend didn't take care of it. Cost:$0. Not only do they know what they're doing, they don't try to screw around and upsell you like some places. (Oh yeah, the two brakemaster's locations I took it to for some other problems early in the week? Didn't figure out that my brake fluid was low. Really, who would expect brake fluid to be checked at a place called brakemasters?) read more

THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!!! THEY WERE THE FIRST PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY EXPLAIN TO ME HOW IT ALL WORKED, HOW IT COULD BE BROKEN, HOW IT COULD BE FIXED. After taking my '97 Tacoma to multiple places, no one could give me an exact diagnosis that was wrong with the truck. It has been making a clicking noise for while and every person I took it to told me I needed a new transmission but could not give me an explanation of the problem. I honesty felt like I was getting scammed and continued to drive the truck. I was visiting my parents in Tucson when the truck started to sound worse. Lloyd's transmission was recommended to us by another mechanic. I called them and spoke to Darrell and he told me to bring it down and he'd look at it really quick. As soon as I pulled into the parking lot they knew what was wrong with the truck. Darrell pulled me inside to explain to me how the gears works, literally showed me with spare parts, explained what they thought the problem was, what the other problems could be and immediately told me how they could fix it, explaining every single step. THEY WERE THE FIRST PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY EXPLAIN TO ME HOW IT ALL WORKED, HOW IT COULD BE BROKEN, HOW IT COULD BE FIXED. I was in. Even with the Christmas and New Years, they got it fixed so quickly and it runs great. They even checked all of my fluids, replaces other parts, put in the new clutch, did an oil change and checked and rechecked it before I came to get it. I found Lloyd's Transmission on the Car Talk web site. I was looking for an experienced shop to diagnose my 5 speed manual Toyota 4Runner- the clutch was sticking and I was worried about an expensive repair. They really know drivetrains and Toyotas! It was a deteriorated plastic shifter grommet gumming up the works. Quick, inexpensive repair. Darrell and his father take the time to figure out what is wrong and they don't start with the MOST expensive solution. How refreshing. I have returned several times during the life of my Toyota always receiving great service and amazing, thoughtful diagnostic work from a couple of real gentlemen. Had new AMC 20 and D30 ring and pinion put in a 35 year old CJ that made it drive like it was new off the lot.
