The Lloyd Hotel is worth a visit not only for its interior designed by different artists but it's also a lovely place to have breakfast/lunch/dinner outside on a sunny day. The staff is very friendly and mostly attentive, as you would expect it for a pricey location like that. The breakfast is good but some of the served dishes are bad value for money (e.g. a piece of bread with humus spread, a bush of rocket salad but only some crumbs of goat's cheese). We decided to go to Amsterdam at the last minute for the bank holiday weekend. We looked at different hotels and chose The Lloyd Hotel based upon price, availability, and that its dog friendly. Plus, the Lloyd Hotel was an old prison turned into an art project and 1-5 star hotel - who wouldn't want to stay there? Location: The hotel is located in east Amsterdam in the docklands. This area is an up and coming area. There's not much other than a couple of grocery stores, other household stores and a couple of restaurants. Arrival: It's a very simple arrival process. The hotel entrance is very non-descript and could be missed if you're paying attention. There's no place to park your car in front of the hotel except for the street. Bellman: There are no bellmen at the hotel to help you. So be sure you can carry your own luggage. Parking: There is a parking garage separate from the hotel. You have to push the "Lloyd Hotel" button upon entrance for your ticket since they share the garage with other offices in the area. Follow the "Lloyd Hotel" signs all the way down to the end of the garage to park. There's a stairwell that leads up to the ground level and the backside of the hotel across from the restaurant terrace. You have to pay for your parking at the hotel reception. Reception/Front Desk: It's a very small front desk which has two people. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Lobby: The "lobby" area is small, long and narrow with some couches spread out in a couple of areas. You can sit in the restaurant/cafe which is right across the reception. Room: There are 117 rooms which range from 1-5 star rooms and every room is different. We decided to go with a 4-star room and ended up with room 217. The room was long and rectangular at the end of the building. You walked into a small entry room with a table for two and a couch. You then walked into the bathroom and then into the bedroom. View: We had massive grand windows in the bedroom which looked upon a walkway. Bed: There were two twin beds which were pushed together to make a queen. The bed was comfortable. Bathroom: The bathroom was big and simple with a shower which had good pressure, sink and a toilet. Hair dryer: The dryer wasn't very strong. I'm particular about hair dryers because I have a lot of hair. Products: They had their own products and only had two bottles of shampoo and a small bar of soap. If you're staying in a 4-star room you should at least receive the basic toiletries of shower gel, conditioner, q-tips, etc. Closet: There wasn't a traditional closet in the room, but along the wall of the bathroom there were hooks with hangers you could hang your stuff. Safe: There was no safe in the room. Control Panel: N/A. Just a remote for the TV. Minibar: There was no minibar in the room. Mirrors: There were two small mirrors in the bathroom. Housekeeping: Poor. This is where I had the most complaints. 1) They didn't change the sheets and 2) They only have us one bath towel on day two. When I asked for another one they said they ran out, but very rudely said "we gave you one big towel and two small ones" and 3) We had an empty bag of potato chips and they left of on the floor. Wifi: The wifi was free and the speed was ok. Dining: We tried all three meals at the hotel restaurant cafe which were all fine. Please see my separate review of the restaurant. Spa: There was no spa at the hotel. Concierge: There isn't a traditional concierge at the hotel, but reception/front desk is very helpful and can answer any and all questions you may have. Style: The hotel is very quirky and artsy. Pet friendly: Dogs are welcome at no cost. This is the first hotel we've stayed at where our dog wasn't charged a fee. There is no bed, bowls, etc for the dog in the room, but you can't expect that since you don't have to pay. One thing though, dogs are not allowed in the room unattended which is good and bad. Good because your dog is allowed everywhere in the hotel, but bad because you have to find dog friendly places to go (other restaurants, cafes, etc) to on your trip. Luckily if you go to Amsterdam when the weather is good there are plenty of places with outside seating. Service: Overall the service is excellent (minus housekeeping) at the hotel. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Two instances: 1) Robin from reception was not only super helpful with all of our Amsterdam questions, but also found us another bath towel and delivered it personally after I shared the information I received from housekeeping. 2) Ann from the restaurant tracked me down before checking out and found a t-shirt I wanted to purchase from the hotel store when we thought they were sold out. Would I go back? Yes, depending on the price since the pricing of the rooms fluctuate. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay, but I do think it depends on your room and whether you're ok with the range of clientele in the hotel. read more

This hotel is a historic building from a big merchant marine company, located in a neighborhood where once warehouses connected with ships to and from South America. It has a fascinating history. The atmosphere is a bit odd. Huge space with modern furniture that to me resembles Ikea. No music is playing which makes the space feel bigger. Light design is non existing. No intimacy no warmth. Like a canteen. This brings 4 stars to three. Food was good. The steak was soft fatless and well cooked. The melon starter small but very tasty. Staff was friendly but didn't check mid course if everything is okay. The bathroom smelled awfully strong of piss. Which is plain killing when you go during your dinner. read more

Fun hotel. My room had this nautical theme that was fun, and had a great view of a canal, and location next to train stops, bars, a coffee shop, and a grocery store is fantastic. The check in and check out experience was slow, due mostly to the size of their front desk, but the staff were very friendly and helpful. Other folks I knew had rooms that were more interesting in terms of layout than mine. The vibe of the place is great, and the weird rooms are great. Recommend. read more

I guess this is the first English review. Man them Dutch use a lot of Vowels! I stayed at the Lloyd in 2006 while I was shooting a film in and around Amsterdam called "Tulips for Daisy" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mupONp74FuY). I shot several scenes in the actual hotel. It was one of the coolest, nicest, most chill hotels I've ever stayed in. The staff was super nice and the rooms and architecture throughout were stunning and modern. It one of those perfect memories when I look back. I long for it actually. They have a restaurant that was white with hints of pale colors and full of light. I normally stay away from the restaurants in hotels, but the food was so good that we ate most meals here. If I get back to Amsterdam I wouldn't stay anywhere other than the Lloyd. _____ read more

Had a lovely stay at this establishment for three nights in August. The weather in Amsterdam was mild, so the lack of air conditioning went mostly unnoticed. The hotel provides "hot water" closets in the hallways where you can make yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee whenever. We enjoyed a nice cup of tea on our final night at the hotel before bed. The location is a bit away from the touristy part of town, but bike rental at the hotel and the bike friendly city created a perfect pairing for transportation just about anywhere. There are two wonderful restaurants within a very short waking distance of the hotel. The better of the two, Odessa (actually on a boat), is just across the way on the water. We enjoyed our stay at this gem of a hotel with a wide range of rooms and a very "artsy" feel. read more

The rooms are unique at this hotel. The one I had was spacious and not too quirky such that I was comfortable and happy. I know that some rooms are a little crazy so you can be uncomfortable. For example, at least one room has your shower in the middle of it -- out in the open. Be prepared for this if you choose this hotel. We booked a room at the Lloyd Hotel because it was affordable and seemed recently renovated. I didn't realize that it was formerly a prison, though I'm not sure that would have affected our reservation. Things we liked: the building is beautiful, the restaurant is actually pretty good, the common areas in the hotel are extremely well-designed. Things we didn't like: the walls were very thin so we could easily hear noises from other rooms (most notably a drunken German man singing in the wee hours of the morning). The room was small, though knowing that it used to be a prison, the room size makes a lot more sense in hindsight. The location is definitely off the beaten path ... though there is a train stop right behind the hotel which makes it more manageable. Lloyd Hotel is a very pared down, modern-ish hotel with not a lot of amenities. It was a fine place to stay, and it felt like it was a real piece of Amsterdam history, but it was by no means luxurious. I think it is on par with its pricing - there is a reason that it was the cheapest hotels available - and it was pretty clean. If you book here, expect a more dorm-like/hostel feel versus a full-service, pampering hotel. If that's what you're looking for, then it is a fine place to stay. read more

The place is good is your view of an hotel is an experience. It is actually called "Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy" and has public space where you can enjoy the time or read a book. The rooms have different level of comfort (and prices) and range from 1 to 5 stars. I had a 2 star room which was basic but included in-room toilet and shower. Now what I must specify is that the shower was actually in the room proper! I mean right there in plain sight with no curtains and no borders on the floor. There is a whole in the floor to evacuate the water and they provide a broom so that you can push the water back towards that whole after you are done. That's manageable, just don't share the room if you like your privacy while you shower (I know that not all 2 star room are like that, but mine was). The hotel is in the east docklands in an area where not much happen. read more

My friends and I stayed in this hotel for three nights in August 2013. When we first walked in we had no idea what to expect. There was definitely a great view of the water across from the hotel. Since there were two males and one female in this room, we asked for a room that could fit an extra bed. The room they gave us was 3 stars on paper. It had an interesting decor with medicine bottles in the cabinet. The main bed was built into the cubby hole with a tv inside hanging above. The bathroom was large, but with the common shared floor shower frequently seen in Europe where the water can get all over the place. The extra bed was comfortable along the edge of the room. We were a bit lucky with weather, but one night was hot without air conditioning available. We kept our windows open, but unfortunately the restaurant below and bars nearby kept things loud all night on a Friday night into Sunday morning. The restaurant in the hotel had GREAT food and beers. The overall decor of the building was eclectic and cool. I thought this place could be haunted! We enjoyed being able to get hot water for tea right outside our room. BEST things about this hotel: We were able to purchae tram passes at the desk for the stop just behind the hotel. We were able to purchase passes for many of the museums that are in Amsterdam allowing us to bypass long lines. One should DEFINITELY take advantage of this. Free wifi was a plus. With the offerings listed above, I would recommend this place for someone looking for a reasonable stay. read more

Really cool and arty hotel this. It's situated in the former eastern docklands of Amsterdam, quite an interesting part of town with impressive architecture all around the harbours. The hotel's rooms are all uniquely designed by a variety of artists and designers. We stayed in a very roomy romantic loft one, just under the roof. It has a fantastic bath and a swing even! I kid you not. We also like the restaurant a lot. They serve dinner till 01 in the morning! All fresh, all organic. Even if you are not staying in the hotel the restaurant is worth a visit. The hotel is very unique. I have never stayed at a place so bright and unique. My bedroom is pretty nice, standard everything. Tap water for drinking is awesome. No bad taste. View is great and the outside air coming into the room is refreshing. My room looks like it should be in a modern furniture magazine. The bed is super soft and comfortable. I ordered some burger and fries off the jet lag menu, 14.50 euros, and I decided to order it again because it was just that good. It's usually 7 euros to bring it up to the room, so I didn't have enough money so they said they would call my room for me to pick up my food. Apparently the called multiple times and I later found out that my phone wasn't working. But out of the kindness of his heart and respect for the food, Jonathan brought it up and no charge. I stayed at the Lloyd for close to 3 weeks at the start of my recent move to Amsterdam from Colorado. We were booked in one of the hotel's 4-star rooms for the duration of our stay. HIGHS - The staff was friendly, remembering random details about me and my significant other that popped up periodically and made us feel like we were being looked after. - Bedding was comfortable, nice. We had a down comforter on the bed, which was something that not all hotels include. Very sumptuous to the maximus. - Quirky and charming, a fun taste of Amsterdam. The hotel bills itself as a cultural embassy as well as a hotel. Very, very unique. LOWS - The bathroom amenities weren't great. Two days out of the 3 weeks we were there, they gave us shower gel. I'm not sure if they ran out or if they just forgot, but we never saw any again. There was no conditioner, no moisturizer. Just soap. - Doesn't have the usual hotel extras, such as an ice machine, fitness center, office center. While these could be interpreted as luxuries, it was very surprising not to see at least one of them. - The aforementioned quirks can be a little lousy. Case in point, our room didn't have a shower -- it had a bathtub with a handheld shower. With no bracket in the wall to hang it from. So showering meant having to wave the handheld shower around you in a big bathtub that lacked a shower curtain. Water ended up all over the floor on almost every occasion. While this was mildly amusing the first couple days, we were *dying* for a proper shower after weeks of this. SUMMARY The Lloyd Hotel is likely unlike any American hotel you've stayed at. It marches to the beat of a different drummer, though there's a good chance that drummer hasn't had a good shower in a very long time. ;-) read more

Just stayed here 5 nights. Moved to different rooms a few times as a couple rooms were weird, but that is part of the experience. The staff at the front desk was always helpful and friendly. Lotte was great. Hotel restaurant has tasty lattes and the poached eggs with Serrano ham became a staple of mine for breakfast. Do yourself a favor and get a transit pass (2 days for 12 euros). Takes about 5-7 minutes to get to Amsterdam central station. read more

my wife and I where in Amsterdam to join an ocean cruise. We wanted to stay in downtown Amsterdam but because a National Convention all hotels where sold out under $700 a night. So we ended up at the Lloyd Hotel. It was a very clean hotel with an excellent breakfast included in the price. It was a short and convenient 7 minute rail ride to downtown Amsterdam. The help was very accommodating and polite. Just keep in mind that the Hotel isn't rated like most hotels. The rooms are rated individually. So you can go from a room rated at a 2 with the bathroom and shower down the hall way up to a room rated at a 4 with your own bathroom and shower. The pricing was reasonable and the area was clean, safe and up & coming. I would definitely stay there again. read more

This hotel is actually a renovated youth detention center.... and they have pictures of that in the hallways.... oook...? Other then that, I wasn't crazy about the room. For one, I wasn't able to control the temperature, and it got pretty hot in there. So it got pretty hot in there. Even with the windows open. Also, the shades in my room did not prevent light from coming in my room, so it got pretty bright in my room very early in the morning, keeping me from actually getting good rest. The bathroom has a shower that is kind of a traditional Scandinavian shower. Meaning there's no separation from the toilet and the shower. So when you shower, your floor will get wet, your toilet will get wet.... everything will get wet. And you'll have to use a squeegee to push the water down the drain. I just wasn't feeling it. If you have to stay here, don't pay 17 euro for the buffet. Order off of the menu instead. The buffet can not compare to the great breakfast items you can get individually. Plus it's cheaper to do it this way. read more

We stayed at the Lloyd Hotel during our visit to Amsterdam because our hotel arrangements were made by our conference host. Based on the reviews I'd read here we probably wouldn't have selected it, but we had no choice.I agree with most of the other reviews (in English) that say this is quirky but basic place to stay. The staff were friendly, travel into the heart of the city was easy (you can buy a tram pass at the hotel) and bed was super comfortable. However, I think your experience here will really depend on what room you have and how well it suits you. The design of ours (#014, I think) was non-traditional but not a problem. Except that the room is basically right at street level and there was a quite a bit of street noise every night and in the morning as people were going to work. The last night we were there it was terrible--loud disco music from somewhere and when the party stopped around 3:00 there was loud yelling for about an hour. And you're basically right in the middle of it. Our room was also at the end of the corridor which was also the service corridor for the hotel. So there were almost always housekeeping supplies parked in the hallway. So I highly recommend if you have a choice make sure you're not staying on the basement level. We ate several times at the restaurant, which was perfectly fine. Some things we liked better than others. The pasta dishes and salads were great. As others have said, it's a mixed bag. You may really like it if you have a better room than we did, but it's hard for me to recommend it after our sleep-deprived experience! read more

Everything about this place screams DISCOMFORT. There are no separate showers in the room so you are trying to perch underneath the faucet as you are showering-- completely out in the open of the room. They don't provide shampoo or conditioner in the room let alone sell it in the store. When they told me this predicament they did not seem at all phased when they suggested I go to the city center (20 minute bickered, it was 9:30 at night and I had just gotten off the plane) to buy the shampoo or conditioner. Horrible location in the middle of nowhere. Staff was so incredibly rude it was as if they were trying to pick a fight at everything I said. Guy got mad at me when I was asking about how the locks on the bikes work because he failed to explain. It's too bad because the dining room food is quite good but the hotel makes me feel like I am in the Shining (aesthetically it might have been the actual location, no joke, but the service and lack of manners was truly out of a horror movie). Horrible Horrible Horrible. Don't let this place ruin your experience of Amsterdam! Go somewhere far far away. read more
