We stayed at volkshotel for 3 nights during our stay in Amsterdam. The location was great, just a uber ride away from all the main spots. There is a supermarket nearby too. The hotel is very bougie and edgy. They have a cafe downstairs where a lot of people work from. They have grey offer and breakfast items. At night, the cafe turns into a resto/bar. They have a nightclub downstairs so you don't even have to leave your hotel if you are in the mood to party. The rooms were a bit smaller in my opinion and the bathroom had all glass. Something to kite if you are traveling with friends and value your privacy. Otherwise, we liked our stay overall and would definitely choose this hotel again. The prices were reasonable even though we booked last minute. This hotel is super popular btw, so you will always see a good crowd at the bar and the nightclub downstairs. read more

Overall ok. A few things to note: I reserved a room with two twin beds. The cons: The room is tiny, no place to sit except the bed platform / stairs. Tiniest tv with one channel, the hotel's channel was the only one I could get to work. The 3 hot tubs were all filled with people for too long so we gave up. Lovely half hotel half hostel located in Amsterdam. I arrived during the worst 4 days because every hotel was booked full and prices were almost 4 times normal. The place was nice when we walked into the lobby and saw the huge bar and all kinds of different seating. We got our room and my wife was mad at me because she didn't want to stay in a hostel. Let me explain the problem as this place has a hostel setup with private rooms but shared bathroom areas. So we headed to see the room and found the shared bathrooms are in a private lobby for 8 private rooms. As we walked into the private lobby some guy got out of share and no towel. We then entered our room and when I say enter I mean the gap between bed and wall is 2x8ft enough for two people standing and a bag and our bed was on floor. It was so hard to get in and out of bed. On the fourth day, I was able to change our room to a bike-themed room and it had a projector screen that lowered from the ceiling. A bed in the very middle of the room and private bathroom and a jacuzzi tub. There is a restaurant on the roof of the building that gives a great view of the city while eating. the hotel has three train stations and one was less than 100ft from entrance so city access is so easy. If you are staying for a few days make sure you buy a train pass makes getting around city so easy and no need to do taxi. I would recommend this place as it is really nice and city center is 5 min ride on train and it was nicer than a lot of hotels I saw in city center. read more

What a quirky hotel space! We stayed here for a week during our stay and we loved the location. It was so easy to get to central Amsterdam on train and it was close enough to most spaces we went to that it was an easy walk for us. The train station itself is right outside the hotel. The check-in process was seamless and all the workers at the desk were very helpful. The hotel itself has cards laid out that give you recommendations for the city! The rooftop is super cute. The hot tubs aren't huge and not super warm/they don't have jets, but it's a nice space. There's always events happening throughout the week and you can find these events on a flyer or from their newspaper. There's even a nightclub in the downstairs. The elevators and floors with rooms are very strictly locked by the key cards in order to make sure outside visitors don't wander in private spaces. In the morning, we would grab some fresh tea or coffee. Typically their "lobby" would fill up with people who work from home. There's more than enough space with couches, conference rooms, and books for those who wanted a new scenery for WFH. In the evening yoh can grab a cocktail here and enjoy it while sitting inside or outside. We grabbed a cocktail on a Friday night when a DJ was playing. Highly recommend staying here! read more

My latest search for accommodations in Amsterdam took me to Volkshotel where my buddy and I stayed for three nights. Having booked this months in advance (with no cancellation), it ended up being maybe $50 more overall than an Airbnb. I'm so glad we made this decision because this ended up being one of our favorite spots we've stayed at during our recent Euro trip. Volkshotel prides itself on being hip, clean, and very travel friendly. It oozes like a nice hostel but functions like a hotel with its restaurants, open work areas, and rooftop hot tubs for those chilly nights. Their rooms are very creatively designed with a lot of intentionality and comfort. We stayed in their cheapest room which contained an incredibly soft queen sized bed. The bathroom was clean with newspaper covering up a majority of the glass. At first it may seem to lack some privacy but it works very well in the end. Plus the shower is overhead so it's definitely a comfortable wash at the end of your day. Privacy and security is key here as well. Your room key will literally grant you access to all the appropriate spaces so you shouldn't have random strangers just walking around the hallways. Your room's electricity will only function with a key card locked in place so the hotel is big on conserving energy as well. For the value and comfort, I would absolutely recommend staying at Volks. Even if the city center isn't super close if you're walking, it's not outrageously far where it feels like a lifetime away. With a transit pass, the hotel becomes easily accessible via metro to Centraal Station so you'll have access to AMS or your next destination afterwards. A great place overall for our stay in Amsterdam and one I look forward to checking out again someday. read more

Stayed here for two nights in January. This is an awesome place to stay! Staff was friendly and had no language barriers (I speak only English). They are accommodating and are happy to give recommendations. Downstairs there is a modern study/work lounge along with a cafe/bar/restaurant. I tried the cauliflower soup there for lunch and it was some of the best cauliflower soup, if not the best, I've ever had! 5/5 Boyfriend tried the cheeseburger and it was just average. Rooms were trendy and warm. Only issue was that the walls are pretty thin so you can hear your neighbors clearly if they speak loudly. This might bother you if you are a light sleeper or sensitive to noise. The hotel also had yoga classes, massages to make appts for and nightly activities such as DJs in the bar area. I didn't get a chance to check any of them out, but it's nice to have as an option if you just want to stay nearby. The location is great because it's right next to the metro. I highly recommend staying here and can see myself booking here again if I ever come back to Amsterdam! read more

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this hotel very much because I just checked out today and found bed bug bites all over my neck and arms. This is extremely disturbing. I booked this upon recommendation of a colleague for a work trip, and was put into a room that was probably made for 4 people as the whole hotel is very hostel style, but I was the only occupant of the room. This part was fine with me, but the room was not very clean. The floors often produced used contacts that someone had improperly thrown away, and random pieces of hair everywhere. Regardless, since I brought my own flip flops, I did not care and just went about my business. I slept on one of the beds and for the most part the sheets and the blankets looked clean. However, upon waking up this morning to an excessive amount of bites, I now know that this room and bed was filled with bed bugs! Now I am extremely concerned about having them in my luggage and will be traveling for some time to come, but when I get home I am afraid I don't know how I will even bring my luggage in, perhaps just have to throw it all away? This is terrible. I would not recommend staying here at all. read more

I bloody loved this place - in fact if I make it in life and go slightly mad like Howard Hughes then I think I'll stay here living permanently on the top floor! Amsterdam kicks ass for unique/cool/hipster anyway but this hotel where every room is themed differently really shows off all this. The terrace upstairs is great, the outside coffee and smoking area is full of interesting peeps to chat to and the bar downstairs always had something interesting going on any time of the day. Last night there was a killer jazz band on. I believe there's a club in the basement for weekends too. I'll definitely be putting this place at the top of my list for next return, the only thing I'd improve is making the fruit a lot more ripe at breakfast - it's all as solid as a rock! read more

Very fun place near the city center! The Wibautstraat metro station is very close to the hotel, so getting to the Amsterdam Centraal station is very easy and only takes about 10 - 15 minutes. The hotel is in an old newspaper office building, and you can see how they tried to incorporate a kind of industrial style while re-purposing it to be a hotel. There are bars on the ground and 7th floors. The bar on the 7th is also a restaurant called Canvas where they serve breakfast until 11:00 on weekdays and 12:00 (noon) on weekends. I ate at Canvas for dinner twice, and while the menu is fairly small, the food was still quite good! Both bars also have a wide selection of Dutch and Belgian craft beer as well as fine wines. The staff were all courteous and spoke English clearly. The room itself was specially designed for three people, with one person sleeping in a loft-style bunk bed. The room was spacious and comfortable, but the one wish I had was that there was a refrigerator for us to put groceries - just a minor inconvenience. Security is taken seriously here. You need to scan your room key to open doors that lead to hallways where the rooms are and even scan your key to go up in the elevator. If you do not mind having to take the metro or a cab to reach the center of Amsterdam and you are looking for a hotel where you can go for a drink and have fun without going far away from your room, Volkshotel is worth recommending. read more

My review is for two separate things: the Volkshotel experience as a visitor and one as an actual hotel guest. As a visitor, I thought this place was great. There's a bar/cafe in the lobby with good food and drinks that stays open quite late every night. There is a full bar on the top floor of the hotel, and then also one open late at night on the weekends. Tons of seating in the lobby for the bar/cafe half, and then another half dedicated as a work/study place. As a guest, I thought the experience was a little more underwhelming. This place was converted from an old office that housed a newspaper, and it shows in the layout of the rooms (although the hotel is very upfront about this). Many rooms have a giant concrete column running right through the middle, which makes things pretty awkward. Due to the layout and size of the standard rooms, there is nowhere to sit except on the bed. My two big gripes were 1) the bathroom and 2) hearing everything going on next door. The bathroom was not at all ideal and our room had it so there was a see-through window directly next to the bed. It's "covered" by newspapers to obscure the lower half of the view through the window, but there are random patches where you could just look right through. Guess they assume couples are comfortable enough with each other, but I like a little privacy when I go to the bathroom. We could pretty much hear everything from our neighbors next door since their bed was opposite ours. Let's just say we were very *intimate* with what was going on with this young couple who liked to return to their room in the wee hours of the morning. But we could also hear more ordinary sounds from next door like them opening and closing their electronic blinds. Just kind of annoying. I think I'd still recommend this place, though. It's not close to the city center, but it's one block from the metro and it's in a much, much less touristy part of town. It's a short bike ride to surrounding neighborhoods, and only like a 10-minute bike ride to the city center. Also only about a minute from the Amstel. Staff is very friendly, but they are all pretty young and not up to the level of professionalism you'd expect at a "real" hotel. read more

I didn't actually stay here, so I can't vouch for the hotel rooms, but Volkshotel was a life saver as a co-working space during my trip to Amsterdam. The entire lobby is dedicated to working, studying, interneting, etc etc etc, with a variety of spaces for your needs. There's a full-blown cafe (with a great cappuccino); a variety of booths, couches, and small tables; an elevated smoking room (if you're into lung cancer), big communal tables; and even small conference rooms that you can rent out! I didn't have a problem getting a small table/outlet to myself early in the morning, but it definitely filled up later on. They also have a bar and a restaurant in the lobby, which I didn't try. The staff was also super friendly and didn't even ask if I was staying there. And the best part, the wifi is FAST! I was able to get done all of my work while enjoying the hipster/industrial atmosphere and enjoying some great coffee. read more

We stayed here for 3 nights, at one of those themed rooms. The bathing bikou. It was AMAZING. The hotel is so beautiful, it's hard to wrap your head around. Its like a 20 min walk to the city center but so worth it! The area is filled with good golden spots. The staff was helpfull and the stay was so pleasant! 3.5 for sure. I'll round to 4. This is a nice, solid, modern yet hipstery hotel. The standard room (while small) is efficient and comfortable. In comparison to the other hotels in Amsterdam, Volkshotel is a great price. For what you get, it's very affordable. The location is a bit far from the city center; it's definitely not walking distance on a regular basis. Lobby was a bit disorganized; as was a lot of staff responsibility. For example, one night we requested more towels but they gave us a hard time because the cleaning staff had left... that was odd. The front desk staff was typically pleasant enough, though - so that made up for the few flukes. Not that it affected us much, but I thought it was strange that there was a very anti-weed vibe for Amsterdam (which seemed a bit out of character). The food available in the lobby is a nice touch - and the burgers were awesomely good. The breakfast upstairs was very pricey for what it was, so we opted to eat elsewhere. read more

The most hipster hotel I have ever seen. Apparently the east side of Amsterdam is the new young, hip area and it looks like this is the mecca. The rooms are industrial/mid century modern, have quirky toiletries and tags everywhere (ie the standard do not disturb sign = "Shhh I am writing my first novel"). An upgrade from a hostel, but still retains the fun environment - there's lots of space to work downstairs in an open-air coffee shop area, and equally enough space for a bar. Thursday and Friday night were buzzing with a mishmash of travelers.There was even a speakeasy downstairs (avoided bc they were charging for coat check) and lots of little areas to lounge. They also offer yoga and other fun classes throughout the week, and there was even a hair-cutting station in the lobby set up for a couple hours (for 25 euro)! More perks: FAST wifi, free breakfast upstairs with standard Dutch fair -- delicious croissants, shave-your-own gouda, fruit, deli meats and of course, chocolate sprinkles. There's even HOT TUBS on the rooftop (8th floor, elevator on the right). 3 "Bad Plaats" that were largely unoccupied, and showers/towels/lockers provided. Water was warm but wish it was hotter (I like to be boiled alive, thanks). There's a sauna too but couldn't figure out how to unlock the door... & was in a bikini in 4C weather, so I didn't stay to figure it out. ALSO there's a Albert Heijn next door! I was able to buy 11 bags of stroopwafels within a 3 minute walk. Note: FWP but the industrial style unfinished floor was cold & uncomfortable in December, even with the room heated. Luckily I had fuzzy socks! Also, although fellow travelers were able to use their hair appliances with a converter, mine blew out the power in my whole room. Luckily the front staff fixed it immediately! Random: No phones at all. Imagine my surprise when I got a lovely hand-written letter from the front desk. How romantic! Friendly staff, great amenities, super clean and had a great time. Can't ask for more! read more

Where to start? The architectural appeal is awesome. Very contemporary and visually appealing. The first thing I noticed checking in is that this place will make the executive, hipster, sophisticated and surfer types happy - its trendy but down to earth. I'm on vacation from California and spent 4 nights. I enjoyed the coffee bar downstairs and the rooftop breakfast buffet filled with fresh healthy food. The room my son and I shared was very comfortable. One neighbor chose to smoke in their room and the smell came in to our room. After speaking with the desk they immediately addressed the other occupant and it stopped - I really appreciated their fast action. Best deal = rent one of the hotel bikes for the day. There is so much to see and take in. What a fantastic city!! Overall - 5 stars for me. Not It isn't some posh uppity place that over charges - it is just a great value. Volkshotel a fantastic price point and is within minutes bike ride of the heart of Amsterdam. I am looking forward to another stay in the future. Cheers! read more

It is a very nice looking hotel, interior is dark theme with colourful and raw elements. Young people will feel directly at home. There is a great space at reception where you can have drink, work a little or enjoy a small snack. The rooms are clean but not big. I had the standard room and the bed was just big enough for me (I'm 1,84m). Don't be too wild in your room, because I had a big concrete pillar in the middel of the room (old buildings tend to have a way with concrete pillars). They have a great roof top terrace with an amazing view, there is also a sauna and jacuzzi on said roof that you can use. Check for the opening hours of the "spa" on the site, they scrub it down on specific days. There is a subway station 2min walk that can get you to the center of Amsterdam, and an Albert Heijn supermarket, same 3min walk, (open from 8 until 22) if you want to get some food or drinks. Good hotel if you're passing through on a visit in Amsterdam. read more

This is not just a hotel... it's a world on its own! A creative hotspot where the Amsterdamians as well as the tourists go hand in hand. The entourage of the Volkshotel has an alternative / modern / vintage blend, which also comes back in the rooms that can be booked. What's also cool, is the bar on the top floor, called 'Canvas at 7'. The bar offers a magnificent view over the city (they even have a hot tub and sauna on the rooftop!) and here they also organize cool events every weekend, which you should definitely check out. As a location independent online marketing professional I'm always on the look out for nice co-working spaces and also for this the Volkshotel is a very convenient location. The ground floor has a 'Werkplaats' section for freelancers, where you can find a comfortable desk and chair and also use WiFi... free of charge! And on Fridays they even offer massages for those who could use a tention-tamer :) The Volkshotel creates a smile upon my face in every way possible! Super nice and unconventional hotel for its price point in Amsterdam. I stayed in the miss petite (good for 1 or 2 people who are close and comfortable being in a small space together) room during ADE for around €130 a night. Amazing view from the third floor, huge glass window and a possibility of blacking it all out with curtains. Nice lighting and an amazing shower. In the rooftop there are 2 hot tubs (that could have been hotter) and a wooden sauna. The 3 times I went there there was barely anyone else and the hotel was packed. I wish they stayed open for longer hours though (9am-9pm). The restaurant is quite pleasant and the breakfast is great with house baked breads and other tasty treats. Not included in the room Charge tho (extra 10€). There are nice cruiser bikes for rent (9€ a day), a great bar/ coffee shop and no room Service or telephone in the rooms - the want to Invite you to come down and to be social instead of hiding in your room. Nice concept. And the best part - late checkout at 3pm For 15€ extra - definitely the best I've ever seen! Hope to be back next year! read more

I stayed at Volkshotel for 6 nights along with 31 of my Washington Scandals Rugby teammates as a part of Bingham Cup 2018. We have traveled together as a team many times, and we've had experiences that ranged from smooth to nightmarish. Volkshotel was as smooth as the butter served with the croissants up in Canvas. I provided the hotel with the names for each room, and everyone was able to check themselves in without hassle. We have stayed in other hotels where this was not the case, and it really makes the trip stressful. Most of us stayed in "L" (large) rooms, with two twin beds and one double. This allowed us to put 3 or 4 men in each room, pretty uncommon for Europe, and that kept our costs down. Half of the bed space is lofted, which leaves plenty of floor space making the room feel spacious even for 4 people. Some of the rooms have the double lofted, others have the two twins lofted. Volkshotel accommodated our requests for particular configurations at check-in. If you get the lofted double, there are stairs up to the bed and just one bathroom with a toilet and shower. If you get the lofted twins, you get two bathrooms, one with toilet/shower, the other with a bathtub and a sink/vanity. However, in the lofted twins room, access to the twin beds is by hard metal ladder. The ladder rungs are pipe-shaped and extremely uncomfortable to climb in bare feet. This is the sole reason I have taken one star off of my rating. (Really, I would like to leave a 4.5 but Yelp doesn't allow it.) With a day full of rugby and walking putting major strain on our feet, this was not a pleasant way to end the day. I hope Volkshotel can put in ladders with flatter rungs, or perhaps add some padding to the ladders as they are. The beds themselves are foam (not memory foam) and are decently comfortable. The room does not have a clock or a phone of any kind, so be ready to use your smartphone for an alarm. Power outlets were available at bedside, even in the lofts. There are some great amenities within the hotel. The cafe on the ground floor served some of the best espresso I've had anywhere. The front desk can sell you passes for the Metro. (Wibautstraat station is a 1 minute walk from the front door. Very convenient!) The breakfast on the 7th floor was a bit pricey, but worth it for the convenience. The food selection is what we would call "continental" in the US, consisting mainly of fruit, cereal, yogurt, and breakfast breads. (The breads are all fantastic and fresh.) The only cooked items were bacon, sausage, and scrambled eggs that I didn't much care for. The hotel encouraged us to include breakfast in our rate (12 EUR per person per day) but you can pay the same price each morning. I say decline the offer and keep your options open. On the 8th floor is the "bad plaats" spa. There are three barrel-style hot tubs and a sauna. The view up here is just beautiful. It was a nice way to relax after a long day of rugby, and it felt like a very premium amenity worthy of a much more expensive hotel. All of these things offered great opportunity for us to socialize with other hotel guests, many of whom were from other rugby teams. All-in-all, Volkshotel took great care of us during Bingham Cup. There was never any stress about our accommodations, we were able to rest up and focus on what we were there to do, play rugby. If they can just make the ladders more comfortable, I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade this review to 5 stars. When I head back to Amsterdam, I will definitely be looking at Volkshotel again. read more

I am so glad that I found Volkshotel! I stayed for two nights, one night in a standard room and the other in the special 'Cinema Boudoir' room. What I loved about the hotel was how customized every single detail was, even in the standard rooms. The hand painted light fixtures and keyhole cut-out card sleeves made me especially happy. The first employee I dealt with was a little brusque, but all of the others were very friendly and helpful. The location is extremely convenient for the metro, if you could find a reason to leave that is. read more

Absolutely love this hotel. It's the perfect distance from the city centre as it's not too far nor too close to the city centre. The metro is literally outside the hotel and it is no hassle to get to from Schipol. Everything is really cool and laid back and there is no falseness about the place. Beds are super comfy and the rooms are of industrial design interior - along with he rest of the hotel. If you're not a party goer I would suggest to stay on a middle to high floor away from the noise of the ground floor ( but it is not excessive noise in anyway) there is a bar/club in the basement that does amazing cocktail and stays open till the really mornings on the weekends. Also keep an eye out for what gigs are going on. There are also HOTTUBS on the top floor. Very cool!! read more
