What a quirky hotel space! We stayed here for a week during our stay and we loved the location. It was so easy to get to central Amsterdam on train and it was close enough to most spaces we went to that it was an easy walk for us. The train station itself is right outside the hotel. The check-in process was seamless and all the workers at the desk were very helpful. The hotel itself has cards laid out that give you recommendations for the city! The rooftop is super cute. The hot tubs aren't huge and not super warm/they don't have jets, but it's a nice space. There's always events happening throughout the week and you can find these events on a flyer or from their newspaper. There's even a nightclub in the downstairs. The elevators and floors with rooms are very strictly locked by the key cards in order to make sure outside visitors don't wander in private spaces. In the morning, we would grab some fresh tea or coffee. Typically their "lobby" would fill up with people who work from home. There's more than enough space with couches, conference rooms, and books for those who wanted a new scenery for WFH. In the evening yoh can grab a cocktail here and enjoy it while sitting inside or outside. We grabbed a cocktail on a Friday night when a DJ was playing. Highly recommend staying here!

LOVE this. QR codes on the back of each card for specific destinations. Restaurants, shopping, parks, etc. Brilliant!

Love the vibe at this hotel. Rooftop spa, 1st floor coffee shop & shared workspace, very creative design. Cocktails & food on the roof as well with an amazing view. Room was tiny (smaller than expected) and the AC did not work properly (could not lower the temp even though the instructions are on the wall). Great location too.

My latest search for accommodations in Amsterdam took me to Volkshotel where my buddy and I stayed for three nights. Having booked this months in advance (with no cancellation), it ended up being maybe $50 more overall than an Airbnb. I'm so glad we made this decision because this ended up being one of our favorite spots we've stayed at during our recent Euro trip. Volkshotel prides itself on being hip, clean, and very travel friendly. It oozes like a nice hostel but functions like a hotel with its restaurants, open work areas, and rooftop hot tubs for those chilly nights. Their rooms are very creatively designed with a lot of intentionality and comfort. We stayed in their cheapest room which contained an incredibly soft queen sized bed. The bathroom was clean with newspaper covering up a majority of the glass. At first it may seem to lack some privacy but it works very well in the end. Plus the shower is overhead so it's definitely a comfortable wash at the end of your day. Privacy and security is key here as well. Your room key will literally grant you access to all the appropriate spaces so you shouldn't have random strangers just walking around the hallways. Your room's electricity will only function with a key card locked in place so the hotel is big on conserving energy as well. For the value and comfort, I would absolutely recommend staying at Volks. Even if the city center isn't super close if you're walking, it's not outrageously far where it feels like a lifetime away. With a transit pass, the hotel becomes easily accessible via metro to Centraal Station so you'll have access to AMS or your next destination afterwards. A great place overall for our stay in Amsterdam and one I look forward to checking out again someday.

    Cauliflower soup. Delicious!

Stayed here for two nights in January. This is an awesome place to stay! Staff was friendly and had no language barriers (I speak only English). They are accommodating and are happy to give recommendations. Downstairs there is a modern study/work lounge along with a cafe/bar/restaurant. I tried the cauliflower soup there for lunch and it was some of the best cauliflower soup, if not the best, I've ever had! 5/5 Boyfriend tried the cheeseburger and it was just average. Rooms were trendy and warm. Only issue was that the walls are pretty thin so you can hear your neighbors clearly if they speak loudly. This might bother you if you are a light sleeper or sensitive to noise. The hotel also had yoga classes, massages to make appts for and nightly activities such as DJs in the bar area. I didn't get a chance to check any of them out, but it's nice to have as an option if you just want to stay nearby. The location is great because it's right next to the metro. I highly recommend staying here and can see myself booking here again if I ever come back to Amsterdam!

I bloody loved this place - in fact if I make it in life and go slightly mad like Howard Hughes then I think I'll stay here living permanently on the top floor! Amsterdam kicks ass for unique/cool/hipster anyway but this hotel where every room is themed differently really shows off all this. The terrace upstairs is great, the outside coffee and smoking area is full of interesting peeps to chat to and the bar downstairs always had something interesting going on any time of the day. Last night there was a killer jazz band on. I believe there's a club in the basement for weekends too. I'll definitely be putting this place at the top of my list for next return, the only thing I'd improve is making the fruit a lot more ripe at breakfast - it's all as solid as a rock!

Dutch craft beer is available at both bars.

Very fun place near the city center! The Wibautstraat metro station is very close to the hotel, so getting to the Amsterdam Centraal station is very easy and only takes about 10 - 15 minutes. The hotel is in an old newspaper office building, and you can see how they tried to incorporate a kind of industrial style while re-purposing it to be a hotel. There are bars on the ground and 7th floors. The bar on the 7th is also a restaurant called Canvas where they serve breakfast until 11:00 on weekdays and 12:00 (noon) on weekends. I ate at Canvas for dinner twice, and while the menu is fairly small, the food was still quite good! Both bars also have a wide selection of Dutch and Belgian craft beer as well as fine wines. The staff were all courteous and spoke English clearly. The room itself was specially designed for three people, with one person sleeping in a loft-style bunk bed. The room was spacious and comfortable, but the one wish I had was that there was a refrigerator for us to put groceries - just a minor inconvenience. Security is taken seriously here. You need to scan your room key to open doors that lead to hallways where the rooms are and even scan your key to go up in the elevator. If you do not mind having to take the metro or a cab to reach the center of Amsterdam and you are looking for a hotel where you can go for a drink and have fun without going far away from your room, Volkshotel is worth recommending.

We stayed here for 3 nights, at one of those themed rooms. The bathing bikou. It was AMAZING. The hotel is so beautiful, it's hard to wrap your head around. Its like a 20 min walk to the city center but so worth it! The area is filled with good golden spots. The staff was helpfull and the stay was so pleasant! The only thing that might be a minus is the breakfast, it's not as high standard as you thought it would be!

    Amazing view from the restaurant

It hadn't changed since Mata Hari (First World War female spy) had stayed there. As we were visiting Amsterdam again I decided, on this trip, to spoil us a little. On booking I was a little concerned that the Hard Rock organisation had taken this hotel over. So with trepidation I took the chance. OK, remember, we are oldies so can be hard to please some tell us. On arrival, the outside hadn't changed other than the bar now stretched out a little and there was service from the restaurant outside. Reception was so swift by a fantastic bubbly young lady who sorted out a room although we were three hours before the normal signing in. I wish I could remember her name. Walking to our room I noticed the architecture hadn't changed but the decoration was wonderful with so much rock music memorabilia. We LOVED it. The room, overlooking the canal, was a lot smaller than years ago but, shrug, space has to be filled. The room was more than adequate with a wonderful bathroom with walk-in shower. Breakfast was in the dining hall which was a high-light years ago. I was so pleased to see that none of the wonderful art deco had been lost. The President Hotel in Prague had ripped it all out there, sob. Here, there was modernisation, but the windows, walls and lights remained. Obviously the designer had looked and thought 'wow, we can't get rid of this'. Good on him/her. A fantastic stay and on our next visit we know where to stay. Really wish I could remember that young ladies name because she made that day for us. Hi

As soon as my cab stopped in front, a man immediately came down the stairs to help me with my bag and escort me to the check in area. They asked if I wanted anything to drink and I said of course champagne! They gave me two! I checked in with Lisa who was amazing! She had me pick out a scent for my room. What? I didn't know that existed! Super fun! My room wasn't ready because I had booked late even though it was 3pm but I didn't mind waiting, especially when they gave me that 2nd glass of champagne. When I got my room, Lisa and Fae escorted me to the room to make sure I liked it and it was beautiful. I loved how the light came into the bathroom. On that note the bathtub was so nice I almost fell asleep in it! You receive welcome chocolates in the shape of Amsterdam shoes which were so cute and delicious! I ordered room service as the bar only served snacks and did not want to go to the restaurant by myself as it was really open. I got the Waldorf Astoria Burger which was amazing and so good! I'd go back to this hotel just for that burger itself. The next day I also had the breakfast and was able to get the whole tray of assortments and all the juices and coffee I wanted PLUS another dish! All complimentary with my Hilton Diamond status. I ordered the French toast and everything was delicious! Obviously I couldn't eat it all but was able to take some left to the room for later. I also had a spa appointment while here. Massage was great and the masseuse mentioned to see a physical therapist to help my lower back pain that I was complaining about as she said it was coming from my glutes, legs, knees. I've seen a couple of masseuses in the last two years in the states and one in Canada and NONE had ever even mentioned that that could help. I love this! Very professional staff. The spa also very serene with sauna, jacuzzi, and pool. They have a door to the garden which I'm assuming is beautiful in summer but I was here in February so it was freezing! When I checked out it was with Lisa again and she was great as usual and the guys helped me with my bags again when my uber came. They let me sit in the other room and said they'd let me know when it was here. Very nice. I did not want to leave. Haha!

You Get What You Pay For…read more I bartended for Hard Rock Cafe for 12 years. I love rock and roll, so when I saw this hotel it definitely jumped out at me. I will list the positives first since there are not that many: 1. The dayshift employee (cannot remember his name) was a very nice man. He recommended great vegan restaurants and was super cool. We actually ate at his recommendations for the remainder of our stay. He booked our taxi for us the night before our departure and was very hospitable. 2. The hotel lobby is set up like a bar/lounge with a pool table and it's cozy. 3. I liked the use of musical instruments such as a drum stool for a chair in the room and the drum light fixtures in the room. It adds to the theme of the hotel. 4. It was walking distance to a lot of cool places. Negatives: 1. Amsterdam is an old city with cute old buildings. I get it. We stayed at another hotel which was also an old building (and had a very slow elevator; but still had an elevator). This hotel had nearly 90-degree stairs to carry 50 lb. luggage up four flights of stairs (we called them ladders). I could not imagine anyone with a disability or elderly ever staying there for their safety. Literally, the stairs were about 4 inches wide. I slipped on them. sober. 2. The clients mostly consisted of younger hipsters that we could hear stumbling in at night after drinks and the walls are paper thin. We even heard someone fart in the next room. 3. To drown out the noise of the other clients, my partner and I used a rain app on our smartphone so that we could get some sleep (let me add that it was currently pouring outside). We get a loud knock on our door, waking us at two o'clock in the morning by the nightshift employee, telling us to turn the rain sound down. This woke us up and we were literally trying to book a room at two o'clock in the morning at a different hotel due to his unprofessionalism. It's like, how about telling the clients that are actually making the noise to be more quiet? If you are a young and do not mind the paper-thin walls and the ladder stairs, the disgruntled night shift employee that patrols the halls for noise, and have minimal luggage, then I would recommend this place for the location. Otherwise, stay somewhere else.
