The Sunrise Special...A huge breakfast sandwich somewhere under that blanket of rich gravy. Yum

I've been back a few times in a short time span and the food is still tip top, the service is top notch, and I'm loving the diner vibe. I also love that they open super early which works well when I'm hungry and exhausted from a late shift and dont feel like cooking and doing dishes. The prices are within reason as well. They can also accommodate some of the lunch items for breakfast which is awesome cuz sometimes you just need a burger at 6 AM. Special shout out to the fully dressed hot dog ornament hanging on the well decked out Christmas tree. I don't know why but I admire it's presence. It makes me happy. UPDATE: Came back the next morning and decided to push the chefs limits. I ordered a DOUBLE BREAKFAST BURGER. The man was up to the task. It was beautifully plated and perfectly balanced in flavor. He must've known that the salt of the bacon would be just enough to where he would need to just lightly season the burger patties. The bacon was perfectly to my liking where it had crispiness to it as well as some chewiness. He let the bacon hang over the sides of the burger in a spectacular way. I enjoyed ripping off the bacon as a little appetizer. A perfect amount of egg yolk was running off the side which I love to see and sop off with some tater tots. I'm impressed. The dude knows his burgers. Mad props to the dude and the owner for hiring talent. I found a gourmet burger at a comfy diner helmed by people passionate about serving great food at a fair price. I have to mention that with all that bacon and burger patty, the burger wasn't dripping with grease. The burger patties weren't dry either. It was perfectly moist. I held my burger up and didn't get grease running everywhere. It was a great meal.

This is the 2-2-2 +side of gravy.

What a delicious and filling breakfast! My plate was a 2-2-2 plus an order of gravy. Service was rockstar level. Christa, was friendly and efficient. There are plenty of daily specials to choose from for lunches too. I'll definitely be back.

Oh what a find! This place was recommended by a local and although I'd passed by many times, the…read morerec is what tipped my foot through the door at last. What a pleasant experience. The master of sandwiches who took my order recommended the smokehouse grilled cheese. It was a perfect suggestion It had beautiful texture, the perfect balance of meats to cheese to bread, and sauce. It was piping hot and every bite of this sandwich was enjoyed. I usually enjoy the middle of a sandwich but this one was nice from end to end. I actually took my time to enjoy this in little bites rather than scarfing it down. They were also kind enough to let me sample a slice of their bread which was really good. They have a variety of flavored butters and a good amount of loaves, cookies, and things that looked good. The vibe of this place is pretty cool. It is clean and the music is chill, and I super appreciate that they take good care of the restrooms. I've already lined up my next meal here. It'll be a tomato bisque soup with a grilled cheese sandwich. But of course you knew this. You were probably going to order the same and I dont blame ya. It'll be fantastic. I already know!

Old Hickory BBQ in Owensboro, Kentucky, delivers exactly what its reputation promises--and then…read moresome. I'd heard more than once, from both my girlfriend and coworkers, that Owensboro is a barbecue town through and through, so when she pointed me toward Old Hickory, expectations were high. Walking in, I was immediately charmed. The space feels like a cozy old cottage infused with unmistakable local pride. Awards and accolades from magazines and even the Food Network line the walls, setting the stage for something special before you ever open the menu. One of the most endearing details, though, is how deeply rooted this place is in the community. The tabletops themselves double as a kind of hometown directory, showcasing local Owensboro businesses. It's a thoughtful, almost nostalgic touch that reinforces the sense that Old Hickory isn't just in Owensboro--it belongs to it. To fully experience what they do best, I ordered the combination platter, a barbecue lover's dream designed for indecision. My lineup included brisket, baby back ribs, and a quarter of white-meat BBQ chicken, with baked beans and mashed potatoes with gravy on the side. The platter arrived surprisingly fast, and the portion size was nothing short of impressive--this is serious, no-nonsense barbecue. The brisket was a standout: fork-tender with generous pieces of that deeply flavorful, smoky bark that true BBQ fans crave. The baby back ribs struck the perfect balance--tender but still offering a satisfying bite off the bone, never mushy or overdone. The chicken was juicy and well-seasoned, cooked just right overall, with only a couple slightly drier bites near the edge of the breast--hardly enough to detract from an otherwise excellent showing. The mashed potatoes and gravy were rich, comforting, and clearly made with care. The baked beans leaned more vinegary than I personally prefer, but they were still good enough that I cleaned the plate without hesitation--a testament to their overall quality. I couldn't help overhearing a nearby table raving about the mac and cheese, and honestly, that might be my biggest regret of the visit. An elderly woman at the table--easily in her 80s--declared, "This mac and cheese kicks ass!" I laughed, briefly considered ordering my own, then accepted defeat--I was already completely full. One small surprise was the classic slices of white and wheat bread served alongside the platter. When I asked about it, the waitress explained that many customers use it to build their own BBQ sandwiches. While I would've loved a square of cornbread instead, the tradition makes sense--and fits the no-frills authenticity of the place. I tried their original vinegar-based sauce, which was tangy, bright, and perfectly suited to the meats. I do wish I'd had the chance to sample their other sauces, but that just gives me an excuse to return. Could I nitpick and mention the limited napkins? Sure--but at a place this good, I ended up licking my fingers clean anyway. Old Hickory BBQ isn't just a meal; it's an Owensboro experience--hearty, genuine, and absolutely delicious.
