When I take my mother to visit my brother in the capital he has the unenviable task of deciding where to take her for lunch in the city (fussy is an understatement). After a successful trip to French restaurant Brasserie Zédel earlier in the year, he decided to stay with the French theme and booked a table at Jason Atherton's Little Social. Little Social (as well as it's bigger, Michelin-starred older brother) is located on Pollen Street in Mayfair, and like you would expect from a Jason Atherton venture the outside is understated but sophisticated. The interior decor, however, is slightly less understated (though no less elegant). Ox-blood banquettes, dark wooden chairs and tables, vintage pictures, and map adorned walls are the order of the day. The website states that the food is a nod towards French plates, but using the best of British produce. The decor, however, could only have been more French if Juliette Binoche had taken our order, and Vincent Cassel had poured the wine. We decided to order from the prix fixe menu (2 courses for £21 or 3 courses for £25) as my mum was paying and it would have been poor form to make her pay for 3 courses from the a la carte menu. A basket of bread was placed on the table for us to nibble on whilst examining the menu. Three sourdough slices were earthy, doughy and delicious, and the baguette even better. The smoked and generously salted butter was also perfect. To begin I decided to order the violino pumpkin soup, slow-cooked egg, pepper cured bacon, parmesan, girolles, and croutons. The pumpkin liquid perfectly sweet and seasoned; the croutons adding a lovely crunch; the peppery bacon was a salty chewy delight, and the slow-cooked egg added richness. The girolles were the only slight disappointment as they were lost in the other flavours and didn't seem to offer anything apart from a slightly different texture. I had both heard exceptional things about the burger from Little Social, so upon seeing it on the prix fixe menu my mind was made up. Often, when you build up something in your mind the reality is a colossal disappointment, this wasn't the case. The burger was served with french fries (obviously), a garden salad, and on a beautifully bouncy toasted sesame seed bun. The French fries were acceptable; crisp and golden on the outside, fluffy and flavoursome in the middle, however given the level of cooking on show in the starters they felt a little...meh. Although this could be due to the fact that I now struggle to eat any chips that are not cooked in truffle oil and served with parmesan! Luckily, however, the patty was as good as it gets. The pink minced meat was cooked without fault and was full of flavour with subtle herb additions. Additionally, the accompaniments (pickle, mild cheddar, smokey streaked bacon, and caramalised onions) worked in perfect harmony. To finish I ordered the cheese selection that comprised of Vacherin Mont-d'Or, Stichelton and Comté. This was a delicious selection of cheeses, and the accompanying fig chutney was particularly pleasant, but when the desserts arrived I suffered from enormous food envy at what everyone else on the table had ordered. Pretty much everyone else on the table ordered the maple glazed, apple filled doughnuts, cinnamon sugar and Crème Anglaise. When they arrived I couldnt believe I hadn't ordered them. Fortunately, my mother's appetitie isnt quite what it used to be so I managed to bag myself one. The amply sized square doughnuts were covered with a sticky sweet maple glaze and were accompanied by a pot of cinnamon sugar and Crème Anglaise. On their own the doughnuts were good, but when dipped in the two pots they were elevated to a whole new level of sweet and creamy dessert heaven. The apple in the middle of the doughnuts provided the necessary sharpness to balance out the sugar and custard. Despite their size, I could easily have eaten a whole bag of them. To accompany the meal we ordered the Pollen Street Social Sélection, from Anjou in the Loire Valley, which the whole table drank with gusto despite our 1pm booking! There is no reason I can think of not to visit Little Social if you're in the city; good food and expertly chosen wine at terrific value with excellent and attentive service (they were especially good at accommodating my 2-year-old niece). This is an extremely well run and well thought out operation that knows exactly what it's doing, and does it with consummate skill and ease. Bravo!

Little Social Burger
Burger Guide D.

Little Social is an upscale dining establishment perfect for impressing your dinner companions. It's well suited to a bottle of wine and date night, or a business gathering. I stumbled upon Little Social from a rumor that the "new" best burger in London may be here. The aged Scottish beef burger at Little Social is served with bacon, cheese, caramelized onions, and pickle. The standout ingredient on the burger is definitely the very flavorful Scottish beef. The caramelized onions are also quite good and their flavors melt right in with the cheese. Add in some premium bacon and the winning combination of flavor continues. However, a somewhat neutral pickle and very sweet croissant-like bun throw off the entire palette. The bun overwhelmed the production, and the entire time I was eating the burger I couldn't get its distracting flavors away. Overall, Little Social makes a pretty good burger. Swap out the bun and add a little more seasoning to the beef and they'd be amongst the best in London.

I started with the Camembert Frit (Camembert cheese coated in breadcrumbs, fried, and served with redcurrant and raspberry coulis). This was delicious! The cheese paired so well with the raspberry coulis and it was no greasy at all (perfectly fried). For my main course, I got the Steak d'Agneau au Romarin Grilled lamb steak with red wine & rosemary sauce (served with sautéed potatoes). This was delicious as well! The lamb steak was so tender and flavorful and the sauce went so well with it. The potatoes also went very well with the lamb. I have also had their Filets de Cabillaud Rôti (baked cod fillets with sun-dried tomato and cream sauce), served with leek and potato mash. This was excellent! The cod was so fresh and the sauce was to-die-for! I could have licked all of the sauce off of my plate (if it were socially acceptable haha). The sauce was so fresh and paired so well with the fish. The potato mash was also fantastic--perfect texture. For dessert, I had a rhubarb tart. This was delicious! I loved how the tart wasn't too sweet and I could really taste the rhubarb. The service was also excellent. The servers and managers were very attentive and considerate of my husband's allergies. They were super accommodating, which is the reason we came back again! The have a great price for their prixe fixe menu. I would definitely recommend this restaurant! In a nut shell, great service, excellent food, fair prices and great ambience!

The Food: We did the Valentine's set menu, and a fair warning: it creeps up on you! Every course is delicious, but by the time dessert arrived, we were absolutely stuffed. Even if you aren't typically a seafood fan, give it a chance here. The dishes are incredibly approachable, well-balanced, and clearly had a lot of thought put into the flavors. The Vibe & Dress Code: The atmosphere is unmatched, but learn from our mistake! We spent the day exploring Covent Garden and didn't have time to head back and change. You definitely want to dress smart-professional to match the elegance of the restaurant. We felt a little underdressed for the level of experience they provide! Summary: Romantic, delicious, and worth every penny. Just dress up and come hungry!

Given how difficult it was to get a seat, I would have liked to have been seated in the main dining room with the more impressive array of decorations, but my tiny table tucked away in a corner near the entrance wasn't all bad; decorations were still plentiful, and I didn't feel in the way of passing traffic. With the food, you get what you pay for; which may not be as much as you might think given the "poshness" of the place. Without booze, you shouldn't end up paying more than £50pp. The menu has an array of seasonal favorites like Hertfordshire Beef with a red wine jus, roast chicken with leeks and girolle mushrooms, and seasbass with Autumn vegetables. Seasonal desserts are also available and the booze is seemingly never-ending. You can never go wrong with the chicken here, regardless of season, and with a seasoned sommelier always on-hand, rest assured all your wine pairing needs will be met. The beef and venison dishes are also superb, with both light and hearty sides to compliment them perfectly. Dessert can be a hit or miss. I didn't like my first experience here with the Delice, but my second experience was a delicious poached pear with a superb buckwheat ice cream and buckwheat-infused biscuit. I paired mine with the recommended Bordeaux wine to wash down the sweetness, and let me tell you, it was an extra £14 well spent. Overall, this isn't the type of place you visit every week, or even every month, but it's definitely worth planning months in advance to come during the hholiday season. Reservations are a MUST.

We did this over the more pricey high tea, but that certainly looked like a good time as well. That dining room was gorgeous. The food was pretty good. Nothing that absolutely blew my socks off, except for the strawberry dessert. Everything was certainly well done, though. Mushroom arancini with carrot ginger coconut broth was well balanced and craveable. Cod brandade was delicious as well but a bit heavy, could only eat half.
