French fish soup with cheese, bread, and amazing garlicky spread.
    Daniel C.

A cute French dinner spot across the street from a bunch of Lebanese and Persian restaurants. It's a bit tiny inside - low ceilings, narrow walkways, and maybe three stories high. Kitchen and dish washing on the top floor, hidden from the public. Daily specials written in French on chalkboards but menus fortunately have English too. Waitstaff were also French and very efficient with their service. Our group of six ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir and Merlot, which went well with half the group ordering meat and the other fish. Both went down smooth and had little aftertaste. Shared appetizers include snails (a dozen for the table) with strong garlic and a green (pesto?) butter sauce, amazing mussels in garlic wine sauce, and a bit of grilled yellowfin with quinoa. My favorites were the mussels by far. Their free bread was pretty amazing too by the way - firm outside and chewy inside. For my own starter I ordered the fish soup, which reminded me of bisque. Very savory and hearty - must be the broth. The shredded cheese melted quickly and added more richness. Bread slices came with this yellow sauce that looked like mustard but tasted like roasted garlic - divine. For entree, I ordered the duck confit, which arrived in a cute little cast iron pot. It was cooked in beans and pork sausage - a cassoulet. Duck meat had wonderful charred skin and the meat was well seasoned, enhanced by the sweet sauce they offered on the side. Beans were a bit too much so I finished maybe half only. Desert was chocolate fondant with praline ice cream. It's similar to a lava cake, but based on a flour less shell filled with hot fudge that oozed out when cut open. Very rich and decadent - having a side of black coffee is a must. Overall a nice, reasonably price French place in London that I would highly recommend. I haven't been to France yet but could sense they are probably authentic. One of our group members don't eat pork products so the wait staff will not make substitutions as it would alter the main dishes. Luckily they have nice beef options without pork too.

I love Shepherds Market and Le Boudin Blanc has been at this corner for as long as I remember. So grateful to have friends who book the cosy private room for a beautiful celebratory dinner. We chose from a set menu and every item was simply delicious. The beetroots in the goats cheese salad was so delectable they outshone the main ingredient, the pork terrine was obviously home made and smelled and tasted delicious. I opted for the salmon main but also had a taste of the mushroom risotto (not a lame vegetarian option - wild mushrooms with a gentle hint of truffle oil). Lemon tart to finish off the meal and we all left happy ...

First time having escargot and will not be the last. Yum!

I love, love, love this place! Their escargot was so good! You just want to keep having more! Wine had good selections. We were so hungry and wanted to order everything. Our waitress was kind enough to inform us that it was. Alot of food and she made her recommendations. Glad she did. They were great recommendations and I would be back to try the rest. Great food, great service!

Quaint, historic restaurant. The dishes authentic French cuisine. I had the steak tartare and hubby had the filet which was cooked to perfection (rare). Along with a Pinot noir from a very tiny estate, couldn't have asked for a better meal. The wait staff attentive, gracious and welcoming.

    French onion soup

This was a cozy restaurant and the wait staff were friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the ambiance very much *but* all of the dishes lacked seasoning. I started with the french onion soup and it tasted fine but needed a pinch or three of salt. My friend had escargot, which is not something I'm super familiar with but I thought it tasted okay. My entree was the pork belly and it was properly cooked and very nice looking, but (again) didn't have enough salt. The same was true of the lamb shank. It's too bad because the restaurant is cute but the food didn't do it for me.

I started with the Camembert Frit (Camembert cheese coated in breadcrumbs, fried, and served with redcurrant and raspberry coulis). This was delicious! The cheese paired so well with the raspberry coulis and it was no greasy at all (perfectly fried). For my main course, I got the Steak d'Agneau au Romarin Grilled lamb steak with red wine & rosemary sauce (served with sautéed potatoes). This was delicious as well! The lamb steak was so tender and flavorful and the sauce went so well with it. The potatoes also went very well with the lamb. I have also had their Filets de Cabillaud Rôti (baked cod fillets with sun-dried tomato and cream sauce), served with leek and potato mash. This was excellent! The cod was so fresh and the sauce was to-die-for! I could have licked all of the sauce off of my plate (if it were socially acceptable haha). The sauce was so fresh and paired so well with the fish. The potato mash was also fantastic--perfect texture. For dessert, I had a rhubarb tart. This was delicious! I loved how the tart wasn't too sweet and I could really taste the rhubarb. The service was also excellent. The servers and managers were very attentive and considerate of my husband's allergies. They were super accommodating, which is the reason we came back again! The have a great price for their prixe fixe menu. I would definitely recommend this restaurant! In a nut shell, great service, excellent food, fair prices and great ambience!

The Food: We did the Valentine's set menu, and a fair warning: it creeps up on you! Every course is delicious, but by the time dessert arrived, we were absolutely stuffed. Even if you aren't typically a seafood fan, give it a chance here. The dishes are incredibly approachable, well-balanced, and clearly had a lot of thought put into the flavors. The Vibe & Dress Code: The atmosphere is unmatched, but learn from our mistake! We spent the day exploring Covent Garden and didn't have time to head back and change. You definitely want to dress smart-professional to match the elegance of the restaurant. We felt a little underdressed for the level of experience they provide! Given how difficult it was to get a seat, I would have liked to have been seated in the main dining room with the more impressive array of decorations, but my tiny table tucked away in a corner near the entrance wasn't all bad; decorations were still plentiful, and I didn't feel in the way of passing traffic. With the food, you get what you pay for; which may not be as much as you might think given the "poshness" of the place. Without booze, you shouldn't end up paying more than £50pp. The menu has an array of seasonal favorites like Hertfordshire Beef with a red wine jus, roast chicken with leeks and girolle mushrooms, and seasbass with Autumn vegetables. Seasonal desserts are also available and the booze is seemingly never-ending. You can never go wrong with the chicken here, regardless of season, and with a seasoned sommelier always on-hand, rest assured all your wine pairing needs will be met. The beef and venison dishes are also superb, with both light and hearty sides to compliment them perfectly. Dessert can be a hit or miss. I didn't like my first experience here with the Delice, but my second experience was a delicious poached pear with a superb buckwheat ice cream and buckwheat-infused biscuit. I paired mine with the recommended Bordeaux wine to wash down the sweetness, and let me tell you, it was an extra £14 well spent. Overall, this isn't the type of place you visit every week, or even every month, but it's definitely worth planning months in advance to come during the hholiday season. Reservations are a MUST.

My sister-in-law wanted to go to Sketch while we were in London, so I booked a table for us (plus…read moremy husband and brother) on our last night in town. When I looked it up, I learned that it had three Michelin stars, and that I had been once before, on a random date in 2009. Sketch, it turns out, is about five bars and restaurants in one. The part I remembered was the East Bar & Pods, with the giant egg-shaped bathrooms. Dinner was in the Lecture Room & Library, a completely different space with a completely different feel. It was spectacular, the decor bright and over the top, an opulent Wonderland fantasy. We sat in giant armchairs in muppet colors, surrounded by expensive upholstery and crystal. Service was impeccable, warm and attentive, well deserving of those Michelin stars. We drank well, starting with a round of cocktails. I liked my Manhattan, with bourbon, pineapple rum, sweet vermouth, crème de cacao, muscovado, and chocolate mole and Creole bitters. The Champs-Élysées was great, too, with Henessy VSOP, green Chartreuse, lemon, sugar, and peach bitters. I was also impressed with the mint-green Grasshopper, a dangerously drinkable mix of two rums, Briottet menthe verte and cacao blanc, Velvet Falernum, and cream. Once dinner started in earnest, we enjoyed the wine pairing, seven thoughtfully selected wines to go with our tasting menu. They were all lovely, and added a lot to the experience. We opted for the tasting menu over the a la carte, which offered more choice but actually cost £10 more. This was the right choice, no decisions and a stream of surprising delights, starting with a spread of welcome bites. There was cured sea bass with strawberry and a foam of green peas, a mussel with green curry, a tiny tartlet of parmesan and chorizo. Compressed watermelon with Campari, mozzarella rolled in zucchini, a sandwich of shiso, green apple, and lime. Two little jellies came served on ice: a burst of tomato and olive, and another of dirty martini. Bread service brought butter brioche, fennel focaccia, and a brown bread with candied walnut and currant. A trio of butters, too, salted, caramel, and citrus. Then, the first course of the tasting menu. Cornish mackerel and shellfish mariniere with leek and Dijon mustard, as well as duck foie gras Chantilly with confit red bell peppers and nasturtium leaf ice cream. Superb. Course two was all about lobster. Native lobster tail coated in carrot reduction with lemon, with borlotti beans, smoked aubergine, green strawberry, and zucchini. Then a lettuce roll stuffed tight with claw meat, along with fromage blanc, mint, and sweet corn. The third course was built around tomato. Tomato foam emulsified with olive oil, topped with tapenade and pistachio, and dried tomato leaf with oregano; a sort of tostada with tomato, grilled spinach leaves, onion, caper, and shortcrust; tomato pan-fried with chickpea flower on a Montgomery cheddar mousse with pink pepper; a cool, intense clarified consommé with tarragon. Next, a unique blue fin tuna tartare, with Japanese rice, Oscietra caviar, vodka pearls, and smoked eel sauce infused with pinecones. Then, a wild sea bass fillet cooked in demi-sel butter and wrapped in cabbage, served over squid with anchovy, tomatillo, and scallion with chorizo. Our last savory course was French black leg chicken with Perrier-Jouët Brut "sauce ivoire," summer leaves fondue, fresh almonds, and apricot coulis; as well as confit chicken thigh with potato crystalline and sorrel with raspberry. Dinner ended with a dessert extravaganza. If my notes are to be trusted, we had poached strawberry and rhubarb with pineapple granita, wasabi, and finger lime; orange yogurt foam with hazelnuts; an il flotante with peach and sangria jelly; rhum baba with orange foam and pink grapefruit marmalade; a Chartreuse parfait with white chocolate, celery, and verjus; and a chocolate tart with layers of pastry dough and crispy capers. Finally, a few mignardises, which I failed to document. It was 11:30 by the time we settled up, but we asked to see the rest of Sketch and ended up staying until one in the morning. We skipped the East Bar, which was too loud, but used the egg pods. Less impressive this time around, reminiscent of airplane bathrooms. The Lecture Room bathroom, on the other hand, was a Vegased out infinity room. We had a nightcap in the Glade, a stunningly beautiful lounge with excellent cocktails. I had the Glade twist on the Kingston Negroni, with pineapple rum, cachaça, Campari, vermouth, strawberry, and tomato water. My husband had a Gin Basil Smash with yuzu liqueur, basil, and citrus. I believe my brother and sister-in-law had a Gimlet with sake, Belvedere, tutti-frutti, and olive brine, and a Porn Star Martini with Belvedere, passion fruit, citrus, sugar, vanilla, and Champagne. A+ all around. If you want to treat yourself in London, Sketch is a truly marvelous destination. Splurge on dinner, or just grab a drink and use the loo.
