    Foie Gras brûlée

This was one of those dinners that I will never forget, not just because of the food but the event itself which included the service, setting, wine and the people that I was dining with. The bar is incredibly cozy, and service is relaxed but attentive. I was meeting 4 additional people but arrived early. Olivier, the maitre'd, approached me to introduce himself while offering me a beverage. Being a French restaurant with a French waitstaff, I expected some level of reticence - that was not the case. Upon learning that it was my first trip to London, he provided me with a well thought out list of recommended places to visit and kept me company while I waited for the rest of the party. My friends reserved the chef's table downstairs -a tiny table located in the kitchen, right next to all of the culinary action. We were introduced to the entire cooking staff which included Pierre, the head chef and all of his assistants. After ascertaining that nobody had any food restrictions, we were off to the races. Dinner consisted of the following: - Foie gras brulee served with toasted bread - this is on of their specialties and I can see why - rich whipped foie gras "custard" in a small cast iron pot topped with granulated sugar which had been toasted - Halibut and sea scallop appetizer - two separate portions, served on a slate tray. The sea scallop was on a smearing of something delicious and the halibut served with fennel and a finger lime which was not as tart as you would expect a lime to be and paired very well with the fish - Rabbit stuffed with cranberries and duck liver served on a beautiful plate of purple colored potatoes - at this point, I regretted the slice of bread that I had eaten earlier as I was beginning to feel full! - Clementine Soufflé with dark chocolate ice cream (although the ice cream had the consistency of mousse) It is hard to pick a favorite dish but I think if forced to, it would be the halibut. Wine service was also excellent but as I was not selecting the wine, I did not peruse the entire wine list. We had a wonderful Trimbach Riesling, followed by a St Aubin white burgundy before going on to an Italian IGT which we had brought with us (2007 Lodovico - amazing!). The final wine was a French dessert wine. All were excellent. Anyway, I look forward to returning to London to experience another meal at Angelus. .

French food still the best (or my fav) even in London. Went there for a work function. Ordered smoked salmon and crab meat, Parmesan with avocado purée to start, pan speared sea bass for main course and finished with lychee and passion fruit bavarois with red fruit coulis. Everything was delicious, well made, great presentation to fine detail. It is not budget eating place, but worth every penny.

Paddington and Lancaster Gate are not areas known for their food and Angelus may start to change this. In a little dead-end street, a former manager of Aubergine has started an excellent French Bistrot with superb food, impeccable service and great atmosphere. He managed to import a sous-chef from Le Scribe in Paris who was attracted by the challenge of starting a place from scratch and a smaller kitchen. Since the place opened it became quite hot and busy but still this is, probably because of its location, a relatively well preserved secret. There is a nice room that can be rented for spacial occasions in the basement with a pretty cool view on the cellar. But the best table is in the kitchen. Small with 5-6 seats only but quite a unique experience with the view on the ballet of the cooks in this small kitchen working real hard to cope with the orders coming from upstairs. So to do something really different with friends I suggest you try the chef's table as the menu is conceived on the fly by the chef and if you want him to do something different you can ask for it too. Note that there is a very elegant and comfortable bar at the back with a few tables and sofas. Worth trying (especially the Chef's table!). Oct 08: Just been back there and tried eating at the back of the restaurant in the lounge area, great atmosphere, dim light and fantastic food. This is now officially my favourite restaurant in London!

Love this place! Outstanding service, amazing food, excellent wine list! First time visiting and I will surely be back.

Service was excellent, food outstanding! Steamed asparagus with poached egg hollandaise. Warmed bread with French butter. Main courses delish. I had the baked Aubergine and my fellow diners both had the Dover sole meuniere. They were happy to leave one fish on the bone and one off respective of the diners wishes. Not a single bone on the filet was found. We enjoyed all of this while sipping a 2014 Vincent Girardin Les Vielles Vignet Bourgogne (White Burgundy). Our host knew that the wine needed time to open up, and he was extremely attentive while we waited. Everything was delicious! I travel through London a few times a year and like to stay close to Hyde Park. I happened across this restaurant by accident this year but will go back for every visit from now on. Our entire experience was superior. Don't pass this place up if you can help it. We went on early a Saturday evening which is not a busy time for them which I'm sure further ensured a delightful experience.

This is the best restaurant of its type in London. If you want a quick, boring French meal, don't go here.

I started with the Camembert Frit (Camembert cheese coated in breadcrumbs, fried, and served with redcurrant and raspberry coulis). This was delicious! The cheese paired so well with the raspberry coulis and it was no greasy at all (perfectly fried). For my main course, I got the Steak d'Agneau au Romarin Grilled lamb steak with red wine & rosemary sauce (served with sautéed potatoes). This was delicious as well! The lamb steak was so tender and flavorful and the sauce went so well with it. The potatoes also went very well with the lamb. I have also had their Filets de Cabillaud Rôti (baked cod fillets with sun-dried tomato and cream sauce), served with leek and potato mash. This was excellent! The cod was so fresh and the sauce was to-die-for! I could have licked all of the sauce off of my plate (if it were socially acceptable haha). The sauce was so fresh and paired so well with the fish. The potato mash was also fantastic--perfect texture. For dessert, I had a rhubarb tart. This was delicious! I loved how the tart wasn't too sweet and I could really taste the rhubarb. The service was also excellent. The servers and managers were very attentive and considerate of my husband's allergies. They were super accommodating, which is the reason we came back again! The have a great price for their prixe fixe menu. I would definitely recommend this restaurant! In a nut shell, great service, excellent food, fair prices and great ambience!

The Food: We did the Valentine's set menu, and a fair warning: it creeps up on you! Every course is delicious, but by the time dessert arrived, we were absolutely stuffed. Even if you aren't typically a seafood fan, give it a chance here. The dishes are incredibly approachable, well-balanced, and clearly had a lot of thought put into the flavors. The Vibe & Dress Code: The atmosphere is unmatched, but learn from our mistake! We spent the day exploring Covent Garden and didn't have time to head back and change. You definitely want to dress smart-professional to match the elegance of the restaurant. We felt a little underdressed for the level of experience they provide! Summary: Romantic, delicious, and worth every penny. Just dress up and come hungry!

Given how difficult it was to get a seat, I would have liked to have been seated in the main dining room with the more impressive array of decorations, but my tiny table tucked away in a corner near the entrance wasn't all bad; decorations were still plentiful, and I didn't feel in the way of passing traffic. With the food, you get what you pay for; which may not be as much as you might think given the "poshness" of the place. Without booze, you shouldn't end up paying more than £50pp. The menu has an array of seasonal favorites like Hertfordshire Beef with a red wine jus, roast chicken with leeks and girolle mushrooms, and seasbass with Autumn vegetables. Seasonal desserts are also available and the booze is seemingly never-ending. You can never go wrong with the chicken here, regardless of season, and with a seasoned sommelier always on-hand, rest assured all your wine pairing needs will be met. The beef and venison dishes are also superb, with both light and hearty sides to compliment them perfectly. Dessert can be a hit or miss. I didn't like my first experience here with the Delice, but my second experience was a delicious poached pear with a superb buckwheat ice cream and buckwheat-infused biscuit. I paired mine with the recommended Bordeaux wine to wash down the sweetness, and let me tell you, it was an extra £14 well spent. Overall, this isn't the type of place you visit every week, or even every month, but it's definitely worth planning months in advance to come during the hholiday season. Reservations are a MUST.
