Just steps off The Strand in Covent Garden is this lovely French Cafe. We came here based on reviews and it didn't disappoint. Staff was very friendly and the right level of attentive. Had an amazing experience here with my little girls for tea time. They were attentive while giving us space to enjoy the experience. We got lucky to come by on a slow day so were able to sit by a beautiful window with a great view of the town/ we got to enjoy delicious treats and finger foods while getting to drink some of the best tea. This is a lovely and quick French Bistro. We thought that the service was above average for Europe (yes i am american and i expect to be checked in with and they did) This was interesting as the waiter was French and guessing he had some sensitivity training stateside. It's got the whole French Bistro vibe (yep, i have been to Paris and know what that is). Very much a continental style restaurant with all the typical French options. We did the prix fixe menu which is fair value for the convenience of being close to theatres. The citrus salmon appetiser and boeuf bourgignon were both delicious though the salmon would benefit from less mustard and more citrus. The bread is good and does not have a strong sourdough flavour despite being labelled as such. Service is quirky. Our waiter was slow but mostly because he was serving three tables all of whom were seated at the same time. (Other restaurants would have sent someone to assist him.) But he was aware of the delay and made a joke of it. Ultimately the food came out in plenty of time for us to make our show. The restaurant is split over 3 relatively intimate levels with steep stairs between them. If you can't do stairs, make sure you are on the main level when making a reservation. And the men's room requires going up stairs, plus the hot water is scalding hot, so I can imagine any infirm older guys struggling! Overall it's a solid option for the area and not too touristy. I was looking for an affordable afternoon tea and stumbled across this. They have good selection of teas and a variety of sandwiches and sweets, and of course scones. My kid fell in love with afternoon tea because of this place. Their staff was very accommodating and friendly. The restaurant is perfect for a pre-theatre meal. Situated in the heart of theatreland, it offers exquisite brasserie meals at a reasonable price. Service was fast, but delivered by staff with character. Seating was not cramped, and perfectly sat two people without any claustrophobia. We came here while visiting with a local friend. The place was cozy but was easy to navigate. The host and wait staff where polite, friendly, engaging and very personable. We started with of course the Bread, butter and tamponade and our friend has the steak tartar. They came out of the kitchen promptly as did our drinks. For my main I had Steak and Frites and the steak cooked to my specifications. It was a tender steak that I was able to cut with the provided butter knife with ease even thou I had a steak knife. It was a great steak to have with catch up conversation between new and old friends. I had the crème brûlée for dessert and it was rich and the shell of caramelized sugar was perfect. My wife had the coq au vin with haricots verts and brown rice cooked in a floral? Infused broth. She enjoyed her meal and was pleased that her taking an adventurous culinary risk paid out. We were able to get reservations just an hour earlier at 7 on Saturday night. We needed them. The place was full. We had been out in the cold and it was a warm, cozy place that was perfect. We were really pleased with the selection. We were too late to try the Set Menu. We tried the COq Au Vin, pork chop, and tuna. The Coq Au Vin was too much work to get the chicken off the bones. Maybe this is an English thing, but service seems to be slow, or at least not particularly quick in lot of restaurants in the UK. We made a reservation for 6 pm on a Wednesday. At 5:55 I called to let them know we might be 5 minute late, but there is typically a 15 minute grace period so I figured we'd be fine: when we arrived, our table wasn't ready, even though we actually arrived right at 6 pm. The host even gave me a seemingly somewhat joking yet not joking hard time about calling to say we'd be a bit late, even though again, we were on time. After we were sat at a tight little table in the corner upstairs, our waiter came about 6 or 7 minutes later to take our order. The baguette was cold and came without butter. The starters took about 20 more minutes to come out, and by 7:05 we finally had our mains, after having to tell the waiter we had theater tickets for 7:30 and needed to be out by 7:15. Food was so so. Flavor wasn't bad on the pancetta wrapped chicken, but it was bacon, over salted, and the chicken was cooked to death. Beef bourguignon was ok, but lacked the wine flavor. If I lived here, not sure I'd go back, but since I don't, I won't! read more

The CLUE to my stupidity was in the 'Sunday special' choice! T'was crap. In truth - I walked in. (60% full at 5:40pm) - selected the solo table on the street, reviewed the menu, found a bottle of Spanish plonk, and ordered in less than 3 minutes. Lazy f&$cker. Ok. Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. Difficult to mess around with this staple British food item. Even my blind mute grandmother can make a near-Gordon-Ramsey equivalent. BUT not tonight ... There was ONE roast potato - as crispy as it was soggy (it was soggy). Half the plate was shredded cabbage. The Yorky was 'fine' BUT it's difficult to mess up some eggs / flower / milk - touch of salt - and a hot oven! The beef was one slice that looked and tasted like a grey African elephant (the elephant with bigger ears) ear including toughness. The gravy was akin to a broth located in the waste disposal of a sink under the kitchen window of a Chicago summer heat. I did stupid repeating business and on my Todd. My friend booked a table for 10 through Top Table and we were given the option to get 50% off our food bill if everyone ordered 2+ dishes from the a la carte menu. BARGAIN! I ordered the Fois Gras & Chicken Liver parfait. Was nice, nothing amazing. Then I ordered the Moules & Frites. Since it is Lent, I've given up cream & cheese (yes, I know how absurd that is), I requested the cream be taken out, which they did accordingly. It was quite mundane (compared to Belgo's). There was barely any jus and it was just quite salty. Maybe due to the lack of cream? The mussels themselves were quite small, not as beefy as Belgo's... I know if I want Moules & Frites Belgo's is the only place to go. I ate my giant cauldron of mussels, again it was nice. Nothing spectacular. I like this place and I'd probably go there again. It has a nice relaxed atmosphere. The table was booked for 2pm, we did not leave till about 5.30pm and never felt rushed to leave. I might have offered 3 stars, but our servers were so entertaining, I cannot offer anything less than 4. They were hilarious, even taking time to teach us an amusing trick involving a fork, a toothpick, and a salt shaker. Oh, and they provided good service, too! On arrival, we thought we would have a wait, however, there are several floors. We sat downstairs in a very cozy room, that I really enjoyed. As for the food, it was very good but with a little room for improvement. My husband and I started with the baguette and black olive tapenade. It was a very small portion, however, it was really inexpensive. We should have ordered two. The mash served with the beef bourguignon was lacking seasoning. Although it was fine with the stew over it, I would have preferred it could stand alone. The bourguignon was incredibly rich and flavorful. Fantastic with the exception that some pieces of meat were quite tough, while others were very tender. The inconsistency detracted from the dish. For desert we shared the chocolate tart with mint chantily. I liked it, but it was nothing special. I wished we had ordered the sticky toffee pudding that got rave reviews from our companions! Quaint and intimate French brasserie in the heart of Covent Garden - romantically lit (obvi not great for photos, as evidenced by the quality of my sticky toffee pudding pic, but makes for a great date spot). Came here for dinner on a Sat evening, timed to miss the pre-theatre and post-theatre crowds and walked into a half empty restaurant, mostly filled with couples on dates. My friend booked the reservation with Opentable's 50% off deal with the purchase of 2 courses (starter and main or main and dessert). Worked out to be an amazing deal. The house red was a Bordeaux blend that was on point. I opted for the wild mushroom penne with Parmesan cream sauce. A filling portion, not overly saucy and served with a healthy serving of arugula so you feel like you're getting some greens in. Had the sticky toffee pudding to finish. The caramel sauce was divine, the cake part was a tad dry and perhaps not the freshest it could have been. Neither of those things kept me from polishing off the entire thing however, so I wouldn't be swayed away from this dessert choice. read more

However the 2-course deal must be starter and main, it cannot be a main and dessert, which means to have dessert on this set menu you have no choice but to have the 3-course option for £22.50 which seems quite silly. Since my friend and I were short of time as we had an event to attend after dinner, this rigid ordering system meant that we could only have the starter and main despite us wanting the dessert, which is a real shame for both us and the restaurant. Anyways, there's not much to highlight in terms of quality other than the portions being of decent size, reasonably tasty and the decor of the restaurant being nicely charismatic like a throw-back to the hustle and bustle of Parisian style dining in the Moulin-Rouge era. In short the meal is dignified and pleasant enough but just short of extraordinary. read more

A return trip to Boulevard Brasserie and still quite consistentent in dishing up generous portions of good quality classic French dishes. The only thing that has changed is their front of house team which are more friendly and approachable. Rabbit and pork terrine. Very well composed. The bouncy texture gave it a satisfying bite, light seasoning to allow the sweetness of the meat to pull through. A lovely side of crunchy pickled carrots to add a refreshing touch and a contrast in texture. Duck liver parfait This was lovely and rich with the port jelly giving it a subtle sweetness and the taste of wine. It was incredibly creamy as if it's melting when spreading it across the toast. The grilled fig accentuated another level of sweetness as well as adding moisture. Delicious and good quality. Potted smoked salmon rillettes This was okay. creamy and chunky but lacking the sweetness of the salmon due to overpowering flavour of dill and capers. Was nice but wish I could taste the salmon more. A fine petite casserole of clams, mussels and chorizo. The tomato flavoured broth was lovely and well spiced, mainly from the chorizo which gave it strong notes of paprika and a good punch of heat. Nice herbs added for depth and flavour. Mussels aren't in season yet so they were a bit small but even so, they remained soft and plump and same goes for the clams although half of them had fallen out the shells and some into the broth. Seafood linguine A fantastic dish. A generous amount of mussels and clams. It also came with two large prawns that were incredibly fresh and bouncy. Linguine was cooked perfectly so dente in a lovely herby olive oil sauce. It was all seasoned nicely with good burst of zesty flavours from the uncooked cherry tomatoes and refreshing textures from the fresh spinach leaves Boeuf bourguignon & mash. This was a very comforting dish. Generous amount of braised beef that was nice and tender with complex flavousr coming from the shallots and mushrooms although the latter were slightly overcooked it lost its bounce. The added lardons added depth and a richer flavour to the broth which itself was perfectly seasoned Beer battered cod and chips Quite a scam as it was definitely not cod and probably whiting instead. The meat was not as firm and a more mushy texture although fresh and the batter was not crisped enough. Fries however were nice and fluffy, crisp exterior and greaseless. Leg of duck confit This was slightly overcooked becoming dry around the outside and losing a lot of the softer tender meat that it had in the inside. Luckily the lost of moisture was filled by the nice soft stew of lentils and mushrooms and nice addition of lardons added extra flavour. Seasoning was on the salty side though. Roasted vegetables These were lovely and herby, seasoned nicely, sweet whilst remaining its crunchy texture for those who like a nice bite from their vegetables like us. Even went we went in a group of four, service and food was still on par. It's nice for them to have a menu suitable for everyone with good vegetarian options as well as an afternoon tea menu too. The place looks pretty fancy but if you book it via Opentable you can usually get 50% off food which makes it a great place for group dining without suffering the high cost to impress. The single star is not for the food, that was perfectly fine. It's for the flippant attitude of the waiter who served us, if you can even call what we received service. Our table was treated like we were pariahs, while tables around us received attentive service from the same waiter. Our Server interacted with us 3 times: to take our order, to remove our app plates and to deliver us a final cheese plate. Our apps arrived in short order and then we proceeded to wait nearly an hour for our mains to arrive. Not once did our server check in on us or apologize for the wait. Meanwhile the tables immediately to the left and right of us were visited by the same waiter no less than 3 times each. The table to the left of us was seated after we arrived, their apps cam before ours and then while we sat patiently and waited, we watched as they were served their mains, THEN dessert. Finished their dinner and left. Eventually the maitre d came to "apologize" for the long wait and assured us the food would be arriving shortly and advised that it would be reflected on our bill. We were finally served, ate and then served a cheese course in decent time. After our waiter cleared our table and we told him we were done, we waited another 20 minutes for the check as the same waiter continued to serve and give attention to the tables around us (mind you new diners had since been seated at both tables next to us and were receiving their food) we finally had to get up and find some one to get us our check. At no point during all of this did our waiter ever acknowledge the delays, provide any sort of apology or give us any indication they cared about the poor service. We could only come to the conclusion that our particular waiter was homophobic and choose not to engage with us as he clearly was making an effort to avoid out table best he could. It was such a dour experience and has put us completely off from ever dining here again. In the end they offered us 50% off the bill total, but even that wasn't enough to make up for the horrible service our waiter provided. This waiter should be ashamed of his attitude and his ignorance of a table. Its's completely unacceptable. read more

We enjoyed oysters, moules frites, and fish & chips and licked our plates clean. The beer/cider selection is a bit lacking (just one of each) and the service was absent (we wanted another round but didn't see anyone until we were done with our meal and ready to go) but the food was good and we'd do it again. Two drinks, two entrees, and an appetiser plus 12.5% service charge all totalled less than £45. If we'd ordered dessert we would've qualified for 50% off our food bill, which no one told us about, but we enjoyed ourselves and it was totally worth £45. read more

Took a table upstairs, where you can sit by the window overlooking the street if you like. At night the tables have tablecloths and candles - feels more upscale than the street level front room. Hubby and I split a Proscuitto, Fig, Rocket, and Cheese Salad. It had a honey dressing that was cloying. Perhaps they forgot to add any Balsamic vinegar? The dressing ruined the salad as there was no balance to the sweet, which completely overpowered the ham. My Main dish was Mussels in Garlic with touch of cream. I have used this venue on a few occasions and find it to be friendly, with good service. Have only had the set menu which is limited and you need to order sides of vegetables as these are not included, neither is bread and butter. The food is good, nicely presented and reasonably priced. Boulevard is tucked away behind the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and just to the side of the busy Covent Garden Piazza. It's a cute little place and can probably be best described as simple and safe. Nothing on the menu will surprise you. It's the usual French fare: mussels and frites, steak and frites, basic sandwiches, burgers, I think veal was probably the most unusual thing on the menu. But simple doesn't exactly mean bad, and Boulevard has always delivered on service and quality whenever I've been. My last visit was for a civilised stag do, late on a Saturday night, around 10pm. They quickly accommodated around seven of us and we ordered starters and mains that came quickly and were on the whole pretty good. My deep fried Camembert was a little on the small size for a starter but I soon filled up on the mussels and frites for main course. The chips were a bit limp and a little too oily, but they were ok.. Boulevard Brassiere isn't going to set the culinary world alight anytime soon. But it can definitely be relied upon for safe, simple food and some good quality wine. A good place to eat after some shopping or maybe pre or post theatre. Worth a visit, pleasant, but won't blow you away anytime soon. read more

As average restaurants in London's busy Covent Garden district go, Boulevard is probably as average as it gets. It's not bad, but certainly nothing special either. With a supposedly French menu (although some things look remarkably british or from further afield) Boulevard offers a really safe choice for a safe price. Food we ordered included sea bass (good, recommendable), steak and frites (average, wouldn't bother) and for deserts creme brulee (ok) and chocolate tart (average again, wouldn't bother). As you may have gathered by now, I'm not the biggest fan of the restaurant. This may be caused by the fact they forgot my reservation last time I went and made me wait outside for half an hour. They did make up for it by a free glass of kir royale but by then the damage was already done. The restaurant features on cheap deals websites with 50% offers. This implies that the food isn't anything special but at least gives you a cheap deal. For that reason I would come back. As I said, Boulevard certainly isn't bad, it's just too bad they cannot offer something a bit more exciting in the crowded London restaurant scene. read more

We knew we weren't going to get any type of culinary delight and we got what we expected: Average food. That's ok though since the ambiance was great and so was the service. It was a romantic little place with candles and all that jazz. The waiters were French and friendly. My napkin must have fallen off of my lap four times and the guy kept picking it up. Good times. Probably a good place to go before or after theater or perhaps right after you land in this country. The lady at the table next to us spilled her wine all over her 350 pound date. The food was cooked well but nothing spectacular or extravagant. For example, I had the filet steak with dauphinois potato and peppercorn sauce. It wasn't beautifully presented for the £19.95 price tag, and I personally found the sauce and the potato too salty. However, the steak was cooked to perfection as I had ordered. I do highly recommend the dessert. I had the fruit crumble with creme anglaise (seasonal), my partner had ther petit au chocolat, and our friends shared the sticky toffee pudding. We couldn't resist but to have a taste of each other's choices as they all looked so good (and tasted just as good as they looked). The French waitress who served us was very energetic, bubbly, and friendly, although service was slow at times as she seemed to be the only one covering the downstairs area. This is a "safe" restaurant to go to if you are in the area and don't know where to eat. The food is cooked well and the staff very friendly. When you meet up with a friend for a pre-theatre dinner, you're looking for a few things - quick but friendly service, a decent pre-theatre menu and a good deal for 2 or 3 courses. Boulevard Brasserie had all of these... Well the service was a touch slow. But once seated we enjoyed a kir royal and 2 courses for £18. Can't moan at that! I had some lovely pate to start and beef bourgignon for main. The pate was forgettable but the beef was tender, warm and filling. A perfect main meal for that time of year.. August. Yes I though this weird too that they had this on the menu in August (ever heard of a lighter summer menu guys?!) but on this particular day when it was lashing down with rain and particularly freezing as you'd expect the choice suddenly seemed pretty inspired! Couple of issues - the tables were small and squeezed together so everything was perched perilously on the tables when the main meals arrived. You also ended up squeezing past every other diner to get to your table and knocking over a few bits of cutlery in the process. I went for a pre-theatre dinner with a friend, and it was a great experience. I ordered the mussels, and my friend ordered the pre-theatre menu of salmon and beef bourguignon. All of our dishes hit the spot, and we left feeling very but happily filled. Ambience was that of a cute, local French type of place. Nothing fancy, but efficient and sophisticated. Lastly, service was good as well. At times, they needed a little reminding, but overall, things ran very smoothly and we made it well on time for our show after a great meal. There is NO WAY this is a 4-star worthy restaurant experience. The food is totally marginal. Needs salt and seasoning. Not good. I should not have been surprised when we were able to get a last minute reservation that the boulevard dining experience would be So-so. Also there was a special in open table with 50% off everything but steak and alcohol. They must be doing whatever they can to compete in busy covent garden. Onion soup-- onions needs more carmelization. Broth was lifeless. Cheese on top and crouton weed good thank goodness. But if you want great onion soup, do not order it here. Mushroom risotto on waitress recommendation was dull and lifeless. Moules FRites was simple and fine but not special. Spinach salad simple and fine also. Prices good but this was like checking the box on eating something. Service was delightful. Marina was very sweet. Skip Boulevard and go somewhere else. read more

My mom and I were looking for a relatively low key (read: not London expensive) restaurant to have dinner and found Boulevard Brasserie through Trip Advisor. It's easy to find, has a warm, cozy interior and was the perfect ticket. We tried the baked brie and the beef bourguignon, which came in its own little Staub cast iron dutch oven. I would go back and it was nice to have something other than British food for a change! read more
