I'll admit, I did not plan to visit a pet shop today and am fully stocked on my cat's food, litter and toys, however walking by Little Creatures on Columbus Ave on the Upper West Side I spotted a beautiful black and white cat (Luigi) with a harness and leash lounging in the sun. I had to stop in and ask if I could pet the cat. The shop keepers at Little Creatures were SO friendly and kind. They let me pet Luigi for a solid 10 minutes. I tried to ask if I could buy a treat for Luigi, they nicely laughed and gestured to all his treats on the counter-" he's pretty well stocked". I did end up browsing and the store was immaculate- very clean and organized. I purchased a toy and they said "Luigi has the same one and loves it". I was mostly focused on the cat stuff- plenty of cat treats, food, toys, grooming supplies etc., but a few dog owners came in while I was there as well. I have found my new pet store! read more

I walked into Little Creatures with allot of questions and anxiety about my cats care and left with great solutions! I have been feeding my cat premium dry food because of the high cost and environmental impact of canned wet food. I was lectured by a friend about the need for moisture in my cats life and Little Creatures pointed me in the right direction with an idea I would of never thought of! I've only recently started coming here in the last few months because they are closest to home, and the walk to my preferred store is quite a aways and sadly, rife with drug addicts and many not wearing masks. Because I only come here for the bare essentials such as treats and a can or two of wet food for my foster pups, I never cared about the fact that both locations have one very disgruntled millennial that is *sometimes* available, but mostly somewhere in the back or downstairs, out of sight. This review however, is regarding the Columbus Avenue location where earlier this week a dog with a very aggressive temperament lunged and tried to bite my two dogs as I waited in the aisle -they do not enforce social distancing, only wear masks- at a safe distance, for the owner who had no reaction, nor any correction or command to calm his dog, to exit the store. Since there was no objection from the owner against this dangerous behavior -which could have a dog put down!- I stood in front of my dogs, hands behind me holding their leashes and told the dog he or she was bad in a tone they understood enough to avoid me, but still lunged to try to get to my dogs behind me. The owner still did nothing, and so I can only assume he didn't care, nor would he have taken responsibility if something had happened. The staff member, a male millennial, did nothing, said nothing, while I informed him of the consequences of allowing this sort of thing to occur in the shop, and the fact that had the dog bitten me, that goes on its record and thus in danger of being euthanized. It's a jaded time, which may likely cause a deficit for compassion. So what do we do? Continue to give them the bare minimum of our business when we really need it. Le sigh. read more

There's a good selection of quality dog products here. However, for the premium they charge a little customer service/engagement wouldn't hurt. Every time I go in there's a woman with curly, dark hair and she couldn't be less interested in being helpful if she tried. I've gone in twice asking for recommendations for products that could act as an alternative to what I currently have. This is a SALES OPPORTUNITY to turn me into a fan of whatever brand they might have in house and yet she barely points to a new product, let alone engage in a conversation about it and why it's worth it. The last two times I went in I made purchases despite her lack of help and neither time did she say, "Thank you" upon completion of sale. I wanted to message the owner privately but they don't make contact information (email) available on their sites. Service with a smile goes a long way. read more

My dogs know the route to Little Creatures. They would walk there themselves if they are not on leash. The guy who works there (i am ashamed to say i don't know his name) always knows me and my dogs. Even over the phone, he knows who I am without having to introduce myself (and no, I don't have caller-ID available on my number). But to talk about above and beyond: My dogs eats special formula for their sensitive stomach. The food deliver to the store has been delayed because of the recent storm. I was literally down to the last 3 kibbles after feeding them dinner tonight. I called (the third time today) and he promised me the food will be here tonight. but by 11 pm, I didn't get anything and so started getting panicked and decided to start making them food for breakfast with whatever I had in the pantry/fridge (rice+eggs). by 11:50pm, the doorman called to tell me the Little Creatures guy is coming up. So he brought me a whole bag of similar (but not their favorite foods) because the delivery never showed up to the store and he knew my dogs had nothing left. I bought merchandise online for pick up the next day. At the store, the saleswoman said she couldn't give it to me without confirmation from her manager because she can't access online orders. She made a phone call, then waited on another customer. I asked about my order and she said she needed confirmation. It seems the call was only to request confirmation. I waited about 15 minutes in the store, which was hot and cramped. After finishing with the other customer, the saleswoman checked her email and got my merchandise. As I was leaving, I said, "Just as a point going forward, it shouldn't be this difficult to pick up a paid online order." While I was speaking, she talked over me repeatedly saying, "Have a good day," in other words, get out. read more

I've been shopping at Little Creatures for forever (like, probably since the late 1980s or early 1990s). As other reviewers have noted, the staff is very knowledgeable, albeit sometimes harried. I've always found them willing to correct their errors--and I've had some mix-ups with deliveries over the years, it's worth noting. As for prices, I've found Little Creatures to be somewhat on the high side, BUT HEY: They deliver, and they are a small business (so no economies of scale), and I feel an obligation to support small businesses when I can. Little Creatures also has a location on 525 Amsterdam Avenue (btw 85th & 86th Streets). I was in the area working with a client and stopped in there afterwards. I was pleasantly surprised. They carry a great assortment of high value food for dogs and cats. Many of the products I recommend to my training and dog walking clients are sold here, including the Easy Walk Harness, Mushers Wax, Wellness Treats and more. I've never actually been into the store, but several months ago when I discovered my German Shepherd had a food allergy- this store was the ONLY store in Manhattan that I could find that carried Royal Canin dry rabbit food for dogs. So I've been ordering deliveries of this food with Stella & Chewy's rabbit food (which we use as treats) from Little Creatures for almost a year now. They are always pleasant and knowledgable. Our deliveries are always on time and they actually have some pretty good sales on the Stella & Chewy's stuff sometimes, which is always nice. The staff is great very informative, they also have great high quality products. My thing is the actual working conditions that Gregory has his staff enduring. There hasnt been air conditioning in any of the stores in years, at times I would go into the stores and see the actual misery in the employees faces, I feel so bad going in there. Also I've noticed the turnover rate with this company is pretty high, I've seen numerous employees leave and go. I've also heard the reason for Gregory cutting store hours is due to the fact that he wanted to keep more money in his pocket( since minimum wage was boosted), he also fired staff as well at short notice. Another way he keeps money in his pocket is by scratching off expiration dates off expired food, so please be careful with that. Honestly I don't reccomend shopping here, the staff is great but the actual owner is pretty much a capitalist, he's so focused on profit that he will do or tell anything to his customers & employees in order to make money, I do not support this at all! read more

I have a lot to choose from in a small area--whole foods, 2 petcos and several small pet supply stores within a few blocks of me. I started out all excited about whole foods, but.....I'm back to this long time survivor (I remember when they were on east 9th st or something). They offer patient advice. They know the products. If they screw up, which is very seldom, they deal with it. They deliver within a day, which works for me (if you want something THAT minute, it might, as one person said, be a few hours. Why? Because they have one old but strong man and a van and he can only make a couple runs/day. You get him before a run, or it has to be the next day, They've made deliveries at 9 o clock at night. I always give him at least 3 dollars because even though we have an elevator, he humps those big bags of kitty litter to the door. They said things are very slow these days, that they do have a lot of competition, and they're not sure the store at 98th will last. I'll still use them if they;re open at 86th ir whatever it is, but I don't envy them there, either, with Petco a few blocks away. The store is crowded, it's a little dusty, there are no bargains on the prices, but they are really good people who know and care about the products, and they are always patient and take the time with customers. And...they have a store cat, which may account for the smell of cat. But it's the real deal, not a one size fits all, take a number kinda place. I hope they survive. read more

Little Creatures is moderately more expensive than PETCO, but they offer free delivery (and PETCO does not). So the day that PETCO starts delivering is the day Little Creatures goes out of business. Unfortunately, delivery TAKES FOREVER (think: hours), so plan ahead. They've also delivered dog treats which were covered with worms (disgusting), so you might want to skip those. Love This Place! Jimmy is great and can answer most questions and order any weird item you might need. I love going in there because it feels like the cool music store we all hung out in in college. They get busy but Jimmy handles it all pretty good. They also deliver all over manhattan but it's best if you are north of 50th st. Best pet supply store ever. Recently moved into the neighborhood and they made me feel warmly welcomed. The staff is extremely kind, caring and generous and very helpful and accommodating. They will special order things for you and are open quite late, until 10 on many nights which is a lifesaver. They run a generous sampling program, offering several different high-end treats each day which is very customer friendly and smart. The dogs go bonkers when they get near the store, and since my Birdie is a certified therapy dog, they help me reinforce her training by working with me to get her settled before she gets her treat. They even lent me a leash when I could not find any of mine during unpacking! Daniel, Hilario and every single staff member truly understand the meaning of customer satisfaction. I ran into Little Creatures to buy my cat some more Halo dry food about a month ago. Tonight when I was feeding her, I noticed that the food expired in Sept. 2013! I'm not overly concerned because she doesn't eat a lot of it and hasn't been sick, but I'm still tossing it. Halo is expensive food too - around $20 a bag! Had a really crappy experience. Went on Saturday night because it was convenient and we're new to the neighborhood (though it says on Yelp that it closes at 7PM, it's open 'til 8PM). The guy who was manning the store was as unhelpful as one could be. Didn't greet us, didn't get up to help until he absolutely had to, had the most apathetic attitude every (maybe normal for NYC). Example: when I asked him if they sold ponchos, he looked up from his phone, pointed and said "yah over there". Not helpful because "over there" was the entire front of the store. Selection of dog clothes was terrible - they carried great brands like RC Pets, but only had size 18 in stock. Also - mad expensive prices for the things we needed - $20 for a normal cheap-looking leash (bad selection there as well), $25 for a poncho that looked like a garbage bag, and $10 for a poop bag dispenser (which we found the next day for $3.99 at Home Goods). I plan to go back and return everything. Would not waste your time there unless you're really in a pinch. read more

It's always mind blowing to me when stores in uptown Manhattan after triple over charging on everything tell the customer "I'm doing you a favor"!!! I've ordered raw cat food from this store for about $80 a week for months now. My kitty's vet suggested that I try a different protein due to his health reasons. I called this location and spoke to the manager and he was supposed to get me small sizes of 3 other brands who carry other proteins. When the time came to send the trial sizes with my weekly delivery, they were not ready. So as an understanding, loyal customer, I said no problem, delays happen with shipments and just bering it when it arrives. When it was ready, they brought 4 identical bags of just one brand instead of all the 3 brands that we talked about. I reminded to them that I just want one trial size of each to see if my cat likes the taste or not. The delivery guy said that he is not comfortable giving me just one bag when he was given 4 to deliver and he'll be back with the one bag by 5 pm. Again I said no problem. 3 days later, he had not come back so I called the store and the same manager told me that one trial size bag does not meet their minimum of $25 delivery. I was confused since it was supposed to be derived with my weekly $80 purchase and they didn't have it. He told me that he would "DO ME A FAVOR JUST THIS ONCE" and will deliver it tomorrow. That' just right there rubbed me the wrong way. His arrogance not to appreciate that I'm the one who: 1) is over paying for their product 2) been patient and had no problem with the several day delay 3) been loyal enough to keep going back to them and try to work with them and he is doing me a favor???????????????? I got upset and he ended up calling me stupid and hung up on me. I called "Aladio" at their 97th street store who is store manager's supervisor. I feel lucky today. This is my first review at Yelp. The reason is a pet store called Little Creatures. I run into this little store with so much stuff inside a couple of days ago. I went for dinner with some friends at Café Frida (great food by the way) which is right next to Little Creatures. It was after 8pm and it was closed. I went back the next day to check it out with my beautiful black lab. As soon as we arrived we were greeted with a smile from this guy behind the counter, like he had seen us before. He was friendly and gave treats to my dog. I was impressed. I felt like he is not from around here. I found him very polite and knowledgeable. I was very happy to see that they are carrying my dog food, Wysong. And to top it all, the best price in town with free home delivery. I should not mention the price, however, please compare prices with other local stores and you will see for yourself. They have all the supplements and vitamins that my black lab needs. I give my dog the K-9 glucosamine-Chondroitin and MSM. They have it at very good price. I will surely keep going back for the doggie treat on my daily walks plus to get my Wysong. He also offered me to buy the second toy at half the price. Negative: Not a wide variety on leashes. I hope they bring more leashes and collars as I am looking for something nice for my doggie. read more

I have been shopping at the 86th and Amsterdam store since it opened, and I used to really like it, but in the last few weeks there has been a sharp decline. The people who work there are unfriendly, they don't answer when you speak to them, and over all just seem much less knowledgeable. Most recently I made a purchase for a friend, and then found out she had already purchased the items. I brought them back in 2 weeks later to the day and was told they only give store credit. I looked at my receipt and all around the register and no signs indicated this. SO I asked if they are supposed to tell people this, or if it is written anywhere and the cashier didn't respond he just stared at his computer screen. Then he asks for my phone number and first name, and then he tells me the next time I come in to ask for him and he will give me the store credit... So I said, "OK so I am giving you back all the items I purchased, my receipt, and you are giving me nothing in return? Except that I should ask for you?" He was like "oh don't worry I'm always here...." I told him it made me feel very uncomfortable and it didn't seem like a smart decision on my part to leave with nothing at all and if the store always only offered store credit they should certainly have a more legitimate way to handle exchanges. The whole situation made me think that I won't be back. I took my items and walked! I might go back to speak to the owner, who I have met before, but honestly I just might never go back because it left me with such a bad feeling. read more
