Bowl of veggies... Only a few shrimp, this was overkill...

The carry out itself was kept well and it was empty and quiet. I was not nervous to place an order there which was exciting. The gentleman at the register was pleasant and allowed me time to check out the menu and place my order which took about 10-15 minutes for Kung pao shrimp and crab rangoons. The food left much to be desired there were so many vegetables to the shrimp portion it was outrageous and the crab rangoons we're very sweet. I wouldn't return.

A "hole in the wall" kind of place. Dejected, dirty, disorganized, no smile. A very sad place in an otherwise beautiful neighborhood. They seem to focus on take out an delivery. We came here because Momo Cafe next door was too full and we couldn't wait that long. No one was here. After we sat down, a few people also arrived, clearly coming from Momo Cafe next door (same fate). We ordered the safest dishes (dishes they couldn't mess up): pork fried rice (not bad, standard American Chinese fare) and shrimps in black bean sauce (nice bamboo shoots, nice green beans, shrimps are not fresh though). There was a guy (buzz cut, very typically mainland Chinese) and a boy (again buzz cut) at the counter. No smile. Giving the whole place a gangster den vibe. Short words. No full sentences. When they brought out the food to our table, not a single word, no smile. Just like that.

I was impressed by the size of the dumplings but they seemed a little old, not fresh. The crispy tofu was great, I would definitely get it again.

This has been a local carry out favorite of mine for years. The food is delicious, the delivery is speedy, and the staff is really nice.

However, my opinion changed when my wife and I dined in the restaurant for the first time. It will not be our last. What drove me to dine in was the ambience I observed when I picked up a previous takeout order. It was a really nice place, with neat décor, plenty of seating, and a serving staff that was obviously attentive. This remained my impression when we came here for the first time recently. Contrary to our takeout orders, the food blew us away when it was fresh from the kitchen. Perhaps this was because we ordered different things, or perhaps because what we ordered to-go (e.g., fried eggplant, Szechuan chicken) did not travel well. Whatever the case, but this was some of the best Chinese food we have eaten in a long time. For appetizers we ordered the puffy scallion pancake, which was fun to tear and share, and came with some very nice curry sauce or dipping. We also ordered the pork soup dumplings, which were everything you could want in a soup dumpling - piping hot with a warm, soul-soothing broth inside (but which does not travel particularly well in takeout orders). For our entrees, my wife ordered the duck fried rice. I am not the biggest fan of fried rice, but this was some of the best I ever had. The duck favor was prominent but not overwhelming and the pineapple was the best integrated I have ever experienced in a savory dish. I had leftover for lunch today and it was still quite good. I ordered the fish in chili oil, a bubbling, soupy dish covered in peppers. This was phenomenal, an excellent balance of heat, numbing, and flavor. And there was plenty of fish in the dish, as well. I will be hard pressed not to order this every time we come here in the future. We split the fried green beans (solid - crisp and well spiced), which I ate for breakfast over rice with some of the leftover fish. Again, it was still good. As my previous comments imply, serving sizes are large.

In person we ordered Mongolian beef, chili fish, cumin lamb, Szechuan chicken, a crispy pork belly dish that I can't remember the exact name, and kids broccoli fried shrimp. Loved everything but especially pleasantly surprised by the crispy pork belly dish. These dishes were way too spicy for me, should have heeded the warning when there are 3 chili symbols on the menu: chili fish, szechuan chicken.

I hadn't visited since 2021, but I recently stopped in to order the wonderful steamed dumplings I used to enjoy. Instead, I paid $2.00 each for small, flavorless dumplings, and even the dipping sauce was disappointingly bland. I can honestly find better dumplings in the frozen food aisle of a grocery store. According to an article I found online, Mrs. Ann Troung owned and ran Peking Pavilion until it was sold to her nephew. It may be time for Mrs. Troung to return and offer guidance to the new owner, because the restaurant is unlikely to survive if it continues to serve overpriced, uninspired food.

Noodle dish portions are big and good for sharing so you can get the other side dishes like the eggplant and the kebabs (YUM). The eggplant is juicy, garlicky, and beautifully charred. If a place delivers strong execution, quality flavors, and exceeds expectations for what it is trying to be, that earns a top rating from me. Chili Wok did exactly that. We recently visited Alexandria and had an excellent meal from start to finish. Everything we ordered was flavorful, well prepared, and arrived tasting fresh and intentional. The soup dumplings were a standout. The wrappers held together nicely, the filling was savory and juicy, and each bite had that satisfying burst of broth you hope for when ordering them. The fried rice was also very well done. It had great wok flavor, proper texture, and did not feel greasy or heavy, which is where many places miss the mark. The sweet and sour ribs were another highlight. They had a great balance of sweetness and tang, with tender meat and enough texture to keep them interesting. A dish that can sometimes feel one note was handled really well here. Beyond the food, the overall experience was strong. When every dish lands and nothing disappoints, that says a lot about the consistency of the kitchen. Overall, Chili Wok delivered exactly what I hope for in this category: flavorful food, solid technique, and an enjoyable dining experience. Easy 5 stars, and I would gladly return.
