Before we departed he bought us espressos that we drank together at the counter like locals. We visited two beautiful vineyards/wineries with tastings of a nice variety of red and white (and one "green"!) wines. Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly. We also stopped into Óbidos for a little stroll and lunch. He bought us some traditional chorizo bread on a little whim. Lunch had a nice atmosphere and good service, but the prices were drastically higher than other places we ate on our trip, and the food was a bit plain. Started the holiday in Lisbon with a great guided bike tour by Filipe de Palma…read more Lisbon with its hills is not the ideal town for cycling but the tour starts on the top of the hill in Parque Eduardo and goes mainly downhill till reaching the Douro. From there it is along the river untill reaching Belem. So easy downhill ! :) The bikes that Filipe provides are in good shape and suited for the trip. The 3 1/2 tour showed the heart of historical Lisbon, Praça Marquês do Pombal, Restauradores, Rossio, Praça da Figueira, Praça do Comércio and the Docas Area. After the Docas it is onto Belem where the tour ends. After that there went on to discover Belem and visited LX Factory area. With 3 full days to explore Lisbon, we started with a 3 1/2 hour tour on the first afternoon focusing on the Jewish history of the city. Here are the pros and cons: Pros: - We met our guide, Daniel, in the Principe Real section of Lisbon and walked a couple miles toward the Baixa and Chiado neighborhoods. He was more knowledgeable than an encyclopedia...as personable as an entertainer and tied lots of historical loose ends together. - Daniel included many of his own personal views which, depending on your outlook, could add or subtract from the experience. For us, it cut both ways. - All in all, a comprehensive and, at times, intense yet enjoyable 3 1/2 hour walking tour with insight into the Jewish past of Lisbon and Europe at large. - Price seemed reasonable.....100 Euros per person. Cons: - As noted above, Daniel included many of his own personal views which, depending on your outlook, could add or subtract from the experience. For us, it cut both ways. - There was quite a bit of walking up and down hills on cobblestone streets, but it's Lisbon, of course...so that's something to keep in mind. When we got back we realized the only thing we would've done differently was stop & see the Freemason site. When we got to the Pena Palace there was a huge line, which Luis had us skip by collecting our money & returning immediately with our tickets. Highly recommended!!
