Patio of our room. Note the rusted table, mismatched chairs, view of the hedge.

I'm one of those folks that really, really hesitate to leave a negative review. But, alas... We arrived after New Year's Eve so perhaps everyone was exhausted. We got the vibe our person at the front desk was just not happy. We were put in a room in the addition, I don't recall the room number, but it's the last room down a flight of stairs into a subterranean level, down the hall - last room on the left. I assume it's up against the laundry because of the staff conversations and noise coming through the wall. I'll attach a photo of the porch with a "garden view." We walked down to Pasteis de Belem for the world's best Pastel de Nata and I thought about it. On return a more cordial staff complied with my request to relocate. The second room was much better, but not stellar. Probably a bad day, but we were treated poorly.

The chef and staff were absolutely amazing! The swordfish grilled and smoked with a passion fruit coulis was superb, a perfect balance of flavors!

Very nice hotel. Be sure to read the fine print of your rooms when you register. There seems to be quite a difference in room size and amenities. Some have coffee makers. Some don't. Some have balconies or porches and others do not. Our room ended up being quite dark and gloomy. Has very nice indoor and outdoor pools. Not quite big enough for lap swims but can do in a pinch. Has gym and on site spa for massages. Pool area also includes hot tub, sauna and steam bath. Breakfast bar is very nice. Lots of breads, fruits, cheeses and meats to choose from. Different styles of eggs, pastries, yogurts in cereals. Coffee, tea, juices, and mimosas available too. Really wish we could have such nice breakfast spreads in the states but hey, that's one of the things that makes Europe special. Location is close to Belem and the Conference Center. Quite far from the down town tourist sites though.

I usually don't like staying in hotels, but of the grand hotels I have stayed in and spent considerable time, my favorite two have been the Oriental in Bangkok and Raffels in Singapore, so I'm now more than thrilled to add a third, Pestana Palace, to my favorites list. When I first arrived and saw it, I almost flipped. It really was a palace, gorgeous, really sumptuous and classic in every way, ultra immaculate in every detail, totally breath taking in beauty along with the surrounding garden grounds, pools, gym areas and their newer room additions in which I stayed. Better yet, a staff that was more than helpful, charmingly friendly without any pretentiousness who really made me feel totally at home yet at the same time as if I were king of the place. I really can't say enough about how well I was treated, or how nice are the grounds and general environment. In addition, the meals, drinks, everything in every way and in every detail, truly superlative. It's really such a nice place, that my pictures unfortunately hardly do it the justice it deserves. Would I look forward to returning to Pestana Palace? You bet I would, and within heartbeat!!!

Hard to get a picture but this place is architecturally stunning!

Wow! This was a wonderful place to stay. The staff were fantastic. They provided me with an adapter to help since I had forgotten mine at home. The doorman gave me a tour of the property and helped me to understand a bit more about the history of Lisbon, which I quite enjoyed! The room was nice with a pretty view of the garden and pool. I did not use most of the amenities like the pool, or the spa, or the bar or breakfast, but I did use the sitting room to sit and read. One thing that is inescapable at this hotel is that they have wonderful period furniture that makes you feel like royalty. Honestly staying in this place made me feel like I was returning to my castle each night or living like a movie star. Overall everything was great, and I really am enamored with the architecture, the decor, and the service!

WOW. Probably one of the nicest places we've ever stayed. The grounds are spectacular and we actually used our last day of vacation just to laze around the hotel. Spent a great deal of time in the hot tub and indoor pool (weather was rainy/ cloudy) which was just perfect. If you want further proof of how beautiful this place is, they were filming episodes of Top Model while we were staying there. The room itself was pretty spacious. I think we got the "cheapest" room but it was very nice by leaps and bounds. There are fluffy robes and slippers to use, and at night for turn down they put a little mat next to the bed to wipe your feet off on. Wifi in the rooms was very fast. Included in the room is breakfast. a buffet from 6:30-10:30. They have just about everything you could imagine, and if they do not you can always request something. Service here is spot on. We felt very attended to and everyone was very friendly. Several time were were able to ask the front desk for information we could not find readily available on the internet. I will give them five stars, but there are some things I think they could change. They should perhaps look into getting those bed joiner things. The beds were very comfy, but still spaced apart a few times when I was trying to cuddle in bed. They also keep a fire going (I'm not sure where) during they day that is very strong and gave me a screaming headache. Maybe it's the type of wood they use? You're not going to find a meal under $25 there. I guess if you're at a 5 star hotel you can theoretically afford it, but it was the end of our vacation and we definitely shared a few meals to keep cost down. Another downfall out of their control is their location. It's about a 7EU cab ride to just about anywhere. They do offer shuttles at 9:30 and 11 I think, but we never had a chance to catch them. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Lisbon, and will look back fondly on our time there.

I stayed here for two nights. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the service was pretty quick from the bell boy to the room service. The room service food was great, I liked it better than the food in the restaurant downstairs. The room was beautiful, we had one of the suites with a balcony. You have tk search for the bed pillows in the top of the cabinets and make sure to really check fot all your things before leaving because the maid had put my pillow that I brought with me and was black and obviously not one of theres locked up in one of the cabinets. I would have forgotten it if I hadnt looked. The bathroom was nice and spacious as well. My biggest complaint would be the wifi, it barely worked at all. It was a pretty long and confusing walk to get to the gym/spa but it was a nice and had two pools as well.

Our room had a water view and we slept with the windows open each night to bask in the ocean smells and the nighttime ambience. The room itself was gigantic and the automated buttons around the room were super convenient so we could get into bed and turn off the lights, or open the blackout curtains, etc. The staff was lovely, attentive and so accommodating. We had breakfast, lunch and drinks there and each time the service was top notch. European style but more engaged than the servers in other European countries - they even smiled! Now let's talk about the building. It is super modern and cleverly designed so each part of the hotel has a view of the water. It sounds like each room has an individual feel and layout so that is also intriguing. Not a cookie cutter hotel by any stretch of the imagination. We have never been blown away by this level of design, location and service with such affordable prices. We have stayed in hotels twice the cost in the states and were treated like dirt (nyc, San Fran, California). We will definitely be coming back to Lisbon and when we do, we will book here immediately. Don't hesitate, it is the best hotel we have experienced in all of Europe.

We booked though booking.com and we paid less than $100 for one night. There weren't any unexpected fees or anything which I like because when we checked out, we just paid a flat rate of $89 for that one night. Super affordable. Our room was on the 4th floor facing the street and where you can see Ponte de Abril and the Monastery. Our room had a balcony with the view and it was amazing to have fresh air and opening the balcony door! The bed was really comfortable and there were enough outlets for us. There was a tv and a mini fridge and a closet. Bathroom was clean and sufficient and came with toiletries. The only issue that I can see people having is that you have to go up one set of stairs to get to the main desk to check in. However, after that, there are elevators to go up to your rooms. Since it's an overnight layover, our bags were at the airport and we only had backpacks. They were super accommodating because we were running late and check out was at noon. We were late because we got engaged lol and so we called to ask if our stuff can stay in the room until we got back at 1:30 pm. They were so helpful and let us keep the room while we were on our way back! I would stay here again when I come to lisbon!

As you'll see below, your mileage may vary depending on where you are expecting to go to and what you consider noisy, but I think it's a great stay. Pros: +Check-in was super smooth / friendly. The elevator was never overly crowded or took too long to get to. +There was nata and port wine available every afternoon in the lobby. Loved it. +I personally love the design of the room. Loved the art style and the design. The restroom in particular was cool / super modern and had a nice contrast against the more classic style of the hotel. The bed too was comfy and all the amenities were there from locks to hangers. Yes, water is like 2.5 euros but for the huge bottle, that's not bad at all to me. +I personally love where this is located at. It's a quick walk to the Tagus and a lot of the coastal sights, restaurants and not too far from other metros. Also easy to hail a taxi. Also, if you like to party/go to Pink Street, its so close and easy to get to. Pro/Con: +/- Noise-wise, I was placed in a room on the 2nd floor near the alleyway. I heard a tiny bit of noise from the busy Pink Street area below, so it wasn't that bad. Would just check in with the lobby to see if you can be placed higher if you think the noise is going to be an issue. Also, if you're not going to be going to Pink Street at all, you may run into both drunken party patrons or the 'drug dealers' accidentally as you try to get elsewhere. Wasn't a big deal and can just ignore them, but just as a FYI. +/- The rooms have a slightly weird card system in which you have to keep your card near the key reader in order to open. The trick (as someone in the lobby taught me) was just to press up the higher part of the card against the reader and hold it there. Cons: -There was only one plug that I could find in the room, so if you need a few items that need charging, you will just have to make sure to change things out. -Super small desk. So if you need to work or want to read/write at a desk, it'll be a bit tough. Love that it was so close to Time Out Market and the metro/train station to some of the other cities. Would def. go back!

The location is perfect - quick access to Cais do Sodre and Baixa-Chiado stations. The bed and room were both comfortable. Unfortunately our "Classic" room's view had of the backside of another building but we did appreciate the balcony. Breakfast was not included in our rate. Coffee is not available in the rooms or lobby in the early morning and the breakfast seemed to have a late start. Thankfully, there's a pastelaria across the street on the corner. The bathroom was very sleek and modern, but the entire wall and floor (including inside the step-in shower) is covered in some strange fabric. I cannot imagine what the actual floor beneath that fabric in the shower looks like in regard to hair and soap residue. The shower had a traditional European wand option and a ceiling-mounted head, not making it convenient for women who don't want to get their hair wet to shower.

Pros and cons with luxury hotels- there's no loud and gaudy signs to alert itself; just a small subtle golden sign outside. Hahaha! The hotel blends so well with the area around it that it was honestly hard to find the hotel. We went around the square like 3 times; even the locals and the workers working around the area weren't sure where it was despite showing them the address. Nonetheless, I truly appreciate it when designers respect the surrounding areas and try to maintain the original parts and history of the place; choosing to inconspicuously blend instead of obnoxiously standing out. Walking into this beautiful hotel is like walking into a museum. I love the old things they choose to display and showcase. I commend the designers who try to mantain the beauty of old buildings and incorporate to meld history instead of choosing to modernize things. Our stay here was literally and figuratively on a whole 'nother level. Our room was in one of their mezzanine rooms- so it felt like we were in like a mini townhouse since it was a 2 level room. One is greeted with a small foyer and then stairs that lead to the bathroom and then the topmost landing to the sleeping area. We loved how it felt like we weren't in a hotel. Upon the arrival to our bedroom, we were greeted with a nice amuse-bouche of Lisbon's quintessential dessert, pastel de nata and a souvenir of the iconic azulejos. The attention to detail is apparent in every corner. While the impeccable accommodations were stellar, there was some thing that made our stay inhospitable. Unfortunately, the people in the front desk left quite an unpalatable impression on us. Most would consider it wise to put a friendlier face at the front end of such an establishment. A welcoming face and an affable and understanding demeanor to weary and confused travelers would be a wonderful warm welcome!! However, this was not the case. The front desk people need some refresher course on their pleasantries and welcoming skills. Good thing this was not the first hotel we stayed upon arriving to the country!! We immediately wished that we had gone back to The Lumiares Hotel & Spa in Barrio Alto. Despite that place being busy and at the center of Barrio Alto, the staff there truly were hospitable and engaging; night and day difference compared to this one. I understand that the hotel could be busy but there's a difference with attentive staff on busy hours and just plain aloof. There were 2 gentleman and a lady who were in their desks. I observed all 3 of them sitting coldly in there while they were ent about their routine. There was another elderly couple standing with us when we were waiting for our turn to get checked in, and the guy on the other desk just sat there while his other colleagues were going about their work. Let's give him the benefit of a doubt... He could be busy or maybe not able to check any of us in, but one could argue that it's still not hard to provide some friendly support or maybe asked the other guests if there was anything that he could help with while we stand there. I mean offer the poor lady with a cane a chair perhaps while her poor husband was trying to coral their luggage's, the guy could've called a bellhop to help them. Regardless, the lady who checked us in was business as usual; all cold and quite unwelcoming that she couldn't even be bothered to try and work up a mere smile so she could appear acutely affable. After all, you are in the hospitality business and the face of the establishment being situated in the front. Thankfully, interacting with the front desk was a short one. Despite all that, I hate to highlight that debacle because the rest of the staff were wonderful! They were welcoming and friendly. Whenever we had our breakfasts, we were always pleasantly greeted. The servers and the kitchen staff were attentive. Despite being busy, they took their time to answer and explain some of our questions and sincerely asked us about our stay. Our server was delightful & genuinely curious about our trip and was kind to give us ideas and suggestions. We heard her have the same pleasant interactions with the other guests and impressively in other languages. Overall, besides our front desk fiasco, we still enjoyed our stay here. Fortunately, our interactions with the rest of the staff thankfully overshadowed the unpalatable experience we had with the front. Shout out to the security, our bellhop and the servers at breakfast.
