All good meals start with the ingredients First timers... hubby and I have not been to Li's Mongolian BBQ before. I really should refrain from going to all-you-can-eat places because they are so good and too often my eyes are bigger than my stomach. I started to build my dream meal and filled my bowl enough with protein, veggies, sauces and dry spices. A box of clear plastic gloves were provided at the start of the line. They have an abundance of choices for the ingredients and since there are so many choices they can be cumbersome. Here was my not so exciting (but delicious!) meal: the ingredients starts with noodles... PROTEIN: beef, pork, crab VEGETABLE: broccoli, mushroom, baby corn, water chestnut SAUCES: garlic, sesame, teriyaki (almost everything that wasn't spicy) DRY SPICES: sesame seed, peanuts After crafting my meal a cook employee cooked it on a large solid iron griddle at a very high temperature. Came here for dinner and it is something we highly regret. Walked in and the place was hotter and more humid inside than it was outside. They only had a big fan to blow around the hot humid air, it was so hot that the frozen sliced meat was dethawing quickly cause their cooling station for the meat doesn't seem to be working that well competing with how hot it is in the restaurant. They had one cook which caused a huge back up in the line. They don't do fountain drinks anymore and charge you for each soda. You used to get rice, a salad and fruit bar but that is long gone also but yet your paying the same price. Both my husband and I got home and started feeling like crap and have been in and out of the bathroom since and now confirmed we got food poisoning. Just one thing is that it's really hot and humid inside there's no real air flow so just be mindful of that. But all and all really cool little spot. It was my first time eating here. One lunch bowl to go is $14.55. The first thing I noticed was that their bowls are smaller than their competitor Hulas. But I was still able to stack veggies and noodles. The restaurant was clean and there wasn't any line so I was able to get in and out pretty quickly! I poured a bunch of different sauces on top but it still turned out a little bland. I was expecting more of a punch with the flavors but overall it still tasted decent. Let's start with the disclaimer : You go in w/ Mongolian BBQ expectations... your basically throwing all your picks in the bowl, if your not satisfied, you basically return back for a second chance . lol that's about it. I'm here many times and I have never been disappointed with their food or service. Li's Mongolian BBQ doesn't have a nice dining room or beautiful decorations. But they have good food, good service, and a very reasonable price. I remember at about 15-20 years ago. Mongolian BBQ restaurants are opened all over Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area. Some are pretty good but more of the Mongolian BBQs are very badly operated. They're all gone in the last 10 years. Only the good ones stay in business. Li's Mongolian BBQ is one of them. They have chicken, pork, beef, and lamb. Also shrimp, a lot of veggies and noodles. All good quality and fresh. You can add your seasoning and sauces after you load up your bowl. The chefs are cooking the food in front of you on an oversize round iron plate. How delicious the foods depend on how fresh the ingredients are and how good the seasoning and sauces you selected. They don't water down the sauces as much as same of the Mongolian BBQs in the area. The sauces are still very tasty. Li's Mongolian BBQ has a good size parking lot shared with another restaurant and other businesses in a little strip mall. But they have enough parking for all their customers. Li's is the best Mongolian BBQ place I have ever gone to. I go to Mongolian BBQ pretty regularly, different places in Sacramento or even when I am out of town I try a new place. But, none of them have ever compared to Li's. I love the variety of meats, toppings and oils they have. They are very affordable and always have great service. They move pretty quickly with getting customers checked out and food cooked. The place from the outside looks like a little hole in a wall but it is nice inside. They work efficiently during the rushes and even have a to go option. I was craving some really good Asian stir fry noodles and this little spot is down the street from my office. It's a fairly open space with plenty of seating. Upon walking one of the ladies directed me to make my $6.99 to-go box. They have plenty of veggie options and a few meat options for lunch. I noticed they offer shrimp and lamb during dinner time. I opted for the beef and plenty of broccoli. I threw in the Li's special sauce and hot oil and watched my dish sizzle on the pan in front of me. First off, their bowls are fairly small compared to other Mongolian restaurants. If you really wanna get your moneys worth, you have to smash everything down or pile items high. I added plenty of sauce, about 5 servings, but the noodles were still bland...so I had to drizzle lots of siracha on top. The beef was a bit dry and tough too. Veggies were fresh and crunchy though. They also give you soup and rice! However, I do wish I had a crunchy element like a wonton or eggroll. I got a fairly good amount of food for $6.99, but also it was super bland and I felt like if I drove a little further down to Blue Sky...I could've had an entree & side dish for the same price. Haven't had Mongolian BBQ in forever, whether it meant the crappy one near the Natomas Regal Cinemas, the sad one in Elk Grove near Sprouts, or the good old Tercero Dining Commons' signature Mongolian Wok at UC Davis campus dorms (Go Aggies!). A Wednesday evening party of 7, where 5 of us had never been to Li's before but the other 2 told us how it's been there a long time and remains the best in the Sacramento area for Mongolian BBQ, located on Manzanita Ave in Carmichael. We came in for weeknight so dinner prices were $12.99 for All You Can Eat (no leftovers, no to-go boxes), I was rang up for $14 even at the front register. Drinks brought to table, utensils hit or miss (napkin and fork near the cashier, but chopsticks at the end of the wok line). Kids price for dinner (ages 3-10) is $6.99. There is a To-Go option (one bowl only) which is $8.50 for weekday lunch, and $11.50 for dinner/weekends/holidays -- I saw quite a few people avail of those to-go boxes! We did dine-in, in the room to the left of the entrance and not the main dining area in front of the line. Older style furnishings/decor but to me that adds charm and nostalgic authenticity. Quite an extensive selection! Customers were mask-optional, but clear plastic gloves were provided at the start of the line so you could serve yourself the fixins. Start with one bowl (or two if that's your approach to AYCE). There is no soup or rice at this time, or salad bar, but the starting carb is noodles -- I'd say they were about as thick as Chinese chowmein, pretty stuck together. For meats/proteins, they had white meat chicken, dark meat chicken, beef, pork, lamb, shrimp, crab, tofu. The veggies to pick from included green bell pepper, cabbage, jalapenos, cilantro, baby corn, carrots, mushrooms, water chestnuts, onions, broccoli, zucchini, pineapple, tomato, beansprouts...then they have a variety of oils/sauces before your bowl hits the big wok. I recall cooking wine, soy, garlic, sesame oil, chili oil, Li's special, oyster sauce, hoisin maybe, etc. Finishing touches include sesame seeds, peanuts, or sriracha. My first round, I made the supreme mistake of TOO MUCH NOODLES. One in my group was so wise that he made one bowl of just meats and one bowl of just veggies and combined it into a mountain of food for his first round. So, I did make it to my own second round but just did the meat and veggies only in the single bowl (without the noodle bed, they barely reached the rim of the bowl!). I mean, it is AYCE so you've gotta have more than one serving for your money. A few of the ladies in the group only managed one bowl but I must uphold my reputation for being able to put it away. It was a bit of a struggle (poor planning) as I did not come as hungry as necessary for AYCE -- that afternoon I tried a 3-piece combo from Thighstop (crispy thighs from Wingstop) which was good but didn't leave as much room for noods, meat and veg. Anyway, for the dinner price it is a great deal and the food was cooked well and so filling. Maybe avoid some of the thicker cuts of broccoli, carrots, or zucchini as they might not cook all the way through. Definitely be generous with the meat as it does cook down too. With the price of lunch going up throughout the valley, Li's stays still as an affordable place for lunch. My favorite part is the quality of meat ( beef, pork, chicken) which stands out over the other places in town. They have plenty of sauce, garlic, spices, and seasoning you need to customize your plate. I like it very spicy with jalapeño peppers and Sriracha Sauce and a bit of pineapple chunks to add some sweetness. They always have plenty of space, with a clean atmosphere. Their employee have been doing this for a long time and provide excellent service. We went to dinner and they had chicken, beef, shrimp, lamb and imitation crab. The price 10.99 all you can eat can't beat that. The restaurant was very busy and about 15 minute wait to build your bowl and 10 minute line to cook. Parking is ok, but come early and it get loud in the restaurant. It's been about 5+ years since I've last been to a place like this so I had to ask the hostess how it works and she was so kind and walked me through the process. They have a great selection of meat and veggies. My plate was packed with great flavors, the sauces gave it that extra touch, and I topped it off with peanuts for more crunch. You can either get takeout or eat at the restaurant. If you eat at the restaurant, it's all you can eat for a VERY reasonable price. I wasn't going to pass up on getting a second plate when I went.
