Tables needed wiped, floor needed swept, no ice in soda fountain, behind the counter was disorganized 2 We ordered chips and salsa and burritos. Servers and owners are friendly and easy to chat with. The medium sized restaurant has tables for 2 and 4. 6 inch taco wrappers, so the tacos are big and packed full. Most of the food is prepared on a barbecue grill. You can see the smoke rising behind the restaurant. My favorite menu items are the Carnitas Taco and Shrimp Taco. The Carnitas is so juicy and flavorful. While dining in, I'd ask customers what their favorite usual order is. Two have told me the Shrimp Plate. You can order the tacos a la carte. The $4 Charro Beans are tasty, but I thought the portion was small. PRO TIP: You can order the Steak Taco with Bone Marrow melted on top. During my last visit, the grilled veggies was butternut squash. The server Justin was recommending that with the bone marrow melted on top. Went there on a Friday night and ate in. The vibe was ok and it's obvious they thrive in pick up orders. Steak tacos were ok, could have had more flavor and felt overcooked. My friend took me to this hole in the wall. She said the food is great here. We came on a Saturday and there was a lot of parking. I think there was only one car in the lot. It was lunch time. I entered and there was a couple of guys sitting in the back. It is a small place. They BBQ the meat outside in the back. I asked what should I try since I have never been here. He said that the tacos were the best and the nachos. I got the taco plate with one chicken and one steak. It came with rice and beans. Hello Hello! Truly just found myself a GEM! At entry I was greeted by a nice gentleman, the music they had going fit the location and definitely had me locked in. I had actually found them on Yelp & luckily they were less than a mile away. I ordered myself the Char Nachos (Steak) w/ the crema on the side, w/a coke to pair it up nicely. My goodness! These are by far my favorite nachos I have ever ordered at any restaurant. The steak was so tender and not fatty whatsoever and I loved that they put a plentiful serving given it is a bit pricey but very worth it. He kindly brought us a habanero salsa once we asked for a little bit of spice, the salsa was delicious and offered the kick I needed to these nachos. My girl ordered the Char Taco Plate (Shrimp) which included a delicious side of rice and char beans. The rice was some form of a cilantro lime rice but had an extra flair to the taste, meanwhile the beans were complimented w/meat and cheese. The shrimp taco was cooked to perfection and the seasoning was very flavorful, adding the habanero salsa was definitely the cherry on top. I was pleasantly surprised that we found this location and it being so close to my girlfriends house makes that PERFECT. Char Market is located in a non descript strip mall on Whitney Avenue. You likely would never really notice it when driving by. We typically do online ordering for pick up and it has always been ready when I arrive. We've ordered delivery once and the tacos were still warm when they arrived! We typically get some variation of the tacos - the chicken are my favorite. The shrimp, steak, and carnitas are also really good but I always end up wishing I had ordered the chicken. Our friends catered a birthday party with the good truck and we ordered the nachos which were huge and absolutely amazing, but I have never seen them on the menu at the restaurant. We happened to be in the area one evening and of course, had to stop at Char (we were lucky to have tried them during a Yelp event previously). As had been the case last year. My wife and I both ordered their 'CharTaco plate' and went with steak for our protein. This includes two tacos, rice, and charro beans. As I remembered from the Elite event, they bring out food FAST here. I'm talking within five or so minutes! When our meals were brought I made sure to SAVOR each bite. I'm a notoriously quick eater, but I "slowed" myself down to really enjoy that "char" flavor. I've never seen tacos "charred" like at this restaurant. The tortillas ALONE would be fantastic to eat, let alone blanketing the perfect amount of steak, lettuce, and cheese. Their steak bangs and is incredibly tender! I have no idea how they season it but 'Char Market' should lock their recipe book in Fort Knox! P.S. I've been DREAMING about these tacos since Tuesday... yes they are THAT good. Incredibly unique! Great neighborhood spot to eat a good meal. We have tried everything on the menu and our favorites are the chicken plate and the marrow plate. I love the flavor of the chicken and the tortillas they serve with the plates are really good. The portions are plentiful and the sauce drizzled on the plates is flavorful without overtaking the dish. They have my favorite flavor of Jarritos (guava) which is a huge plus. My family and I tried this place on a Sunday afternoon. Food was tasty. I ordered the Shrimp Char Plate which was cooked great. We also got chips and guac to share. The chips had a seasoning that I enjoyed and chips tasted homemade. The guac had very large chunks of tomatoes and lacked some flavor. My husband raved about the beans and said they were delicious! Despite the food being great this establishment needs some attention. The plates were chipped and everywhere was dirty. Maybe they were short staffed? My intern was actually the first person who told me about the Char Market and it was such a great recommendation. This small restaurant could be easily missed if you aren't looking for it. It's located off Whitney Avenue between Mission Ave and Foster Way in Carmichael and the small business strip they're in has parking available. It is on the smaller side with a few tables that are good for couple or small groups of maybe 4-6. It does fill up fast during peak hours though and they do a lot of takeout business. You can tell they've become a neighborhood favorite. I've made smalltalk with people in line and there are a lot of regulars and they all have opinions on their favorite items. They offer plate meals, tacos, kids options, and some desserts. One of the items people rave about is the Bone Marrow ($27) that is very unique and delicious. The taco plates are also very popular and they offer chicken, steak and shrimp. Their house rice is unique and flavorful and the charro beans have pieces on meat in them. I have enjoyed meals dining in as well as for takeout and the quality is always there. I also always order a Jarritos to pair with my meals. From the cup of incredible beans to the scoop of green chile rice topped with a tasty sauce, we were purring. The rice and beans are unique to this restaurant, not your typical recipe. We love Mexican food and the rice and beans tend to be interchangeable from place to place. Not here. The Char Market gives you an equally yummy but different experience. The tacos were the same. Unique to them and a stand out in flavor. I was a hands down Chicken taco as my favorite. Moist, flavorful with a wonderful texture. It was a toss up between the two for my husband. Overall, I personally don't plan to return for a 3rd visit and I don't get the hype. I give it a solid 3.5 stars. We enjoyed our meal at the Char Market, but I don't get exactly why it's so popular/highly ranked on Yelp. We've been twice now, the first time they were still working out their kinks and we were a bit disappointed so wanted to give it another go. The second time we found our meals to be pretty good, but I wouldn't say the greatest ever. The food was zesty and refreshing, not as heavy as Mexican food can frequently be. I thought the meat was seasoned OK, but again not sure what the hype is about. The place itself is very small and in a rundown area. It's fairly barebones inside with just a few tables and seating was uncomfortable in our opinion. I wouldn't plan to sit and chat here, more of a grab-and-go or scarf your food down quickly then leave type place. Food didn't take very long to come out once ordered thankfully. Bone Marrow Plate 5/5* The Bone Marrow had extra chunks of charred beef on top, drizzled with spicy mayo looking sauce to cut the fattiness. This dish had it all.. so flavorful, fatty, and delicious! The rice was overcooked and mushy, but the flavor was good and strong of tomato based chicken broth. The charbroiled squash was so juicy, and had that over-the-grill smokiness..really good if you like grilled veggies. The orange tortilla came aesthetically pleasing AND delicious, cut out in pointy artsy design, super soft, lardy and pliable. Perfect vessel to load all the bone marrow, meaty chunks, rice and squash. Shrimp Tacos 4/5* Where was all this juice coming from?! When I bit into the taco, so much juices spilled out the other end. The shrimps were nicely salted and plump. The same spicy mayo was drizzled on top, add some lime and salsa verde, and this taco had a perfect balance of flavors. Elote 5/5* I'm not a fan of corn on the cob or shall I say corn in the teeth. But these were cut into manageable eating sizes. This one is a yellow corn vs white, and grilled so the kernels aren't as plump and juicy. The slather of crema and cotija was on the slim side, but it was enough to let the smokey paprika shine. I tend to like a creamier elote, but these were a different spin, showcasing the smokiness of the spices and was more enjoyable than expected. Steak Taco 2/5* My least favorite out of the entire meal. We didn't even know al la carte was an option until we asked. The menu doesn't indicate they sell individual tacos. Glad we asked. The tortilla was also grilled, but was too dry to my liking. The meat was nicely charred, but other than that, it was kind of basic and not much other flavor. The bone marrow definitely stole the thunder. Meatier than most places, it offers more than your typical chunks of fat and greasy oil that'd you get from other restaurants. We just left and I couldn't wait to tell you all about it. This is one of those way off the beaten track in a crappy strip mall places that will bring you to your knees it's so good. Their ratings truly reflect what's going on here. We were warmly greeted and placed our order at the counter. We noticed they were checking in regularly to make sure the place was full of happy campers. Not a lot of beverage options at the moment but fingers crossed that will change. Seating is also not abundant but we snagged a seat by the door. I would imagine that as word gets out they're gonna need a bigger space. The food came out quickly and is really the star of the show here. The menu is simple and they are happy to make Substitutions. Came here (finally!) After seeing SO MANY videos about how amazing it was. Nothing but compliments. I was excited to try everything. We ordered the elote, steak plate, the chicken nachos, and the shrimp tacos. We also had the watermelon and horchata Agua frescas. Everything was chosen based on the cashier's recommendations. I'm gonna be completely honest. The 40 minute drive to get here was a complete waste of my time. The steak wasn't steak, it was braised beef chunks that were overly tough and chewy. The zucchini and tortilla on the plate were good, but the tortilla was cut into zig zags, making all the filling I put inside fall out. So annoying! The chicken nachos were on the STALEST store bought chips. They were so stale I couldn't eat them, we tossed them. Hubs and I went last week after months of driving by this little place. Small space, but plenty of seating if you wanted to sit and eat. The menu is pretty straight forward and it is cafe style (order at counter and food is brought to your table). We ordered the street elote, loaded potato with carne asada, chicken and carne taco plate, and shrimp plate. Yes it was way too much food for the two of us but everything was delicious. The corn comes with two pieces and is well seasoned with all the fixings. The potato was truly loaded and they did not skip out on the meat. Now the main dishes. The shrimp plate was soo good. It was seasoned so good and even the vegetables that came with it soaked up the juices and was so so good. The tacos were fresh and they had this crema sauce that was gave everything a perfect balance. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Sunday October 26th, 2025 at 12:30 p.m. I met a friend here for lunch. I had high hopes for this place being it was "voted #3 best Mexican restaurant in the country". My friend arrived before me and went ahead and ordered and was seated at the table with his food when I arrived. I had looked at the menu online and also on doordash before I had gotten there so I pretty much knew what I wanted. I looked up at the menu board hanging above the cash register and noticed that there were no prices on anything. They had gone ahead and used post-it notes to write other messages like they had birria and carnitas now, but couldn't be bothered with prices. I was helped by a teenage boy at the register and it seemed that just he and one other person in the kitchen were working. Normally I would have walked out of a place that didn't post its prices anywhere, but being that my friend had already ordered and had his food, I went ahead and ordered one carnitas taco ala carte, two chicken tacos a la carte, a side order of beans and chips and salsa. The total was $29 and some change before tax and tip. I was a little dismayed that it was so expensive but did not check the receipt until I sat down at the table. There I saw that I was charged $6 for the carnitas taco, and $5ea. for the chicken tacos. Their website states that à la carte tacos are $4. Doordash has them listed at $4.60. My food came out and it looked good but smelled burned. Not outdoor grilled charred but acrid. I tried the carnitas taco and it was quite good. Yay! Then the charro beans, very good, indeed and were proper charro beans for those of you that have no idea what they are and refer to them as soupy and need to be drained, they are exactly how they are supposed to be. The chips were fine by the way and the salsa was quite good. Those are the good things. The chicken tacos are another story. Well my friend said they were very good. Remember, he got his a while before I got mine (maybe 20 mins had lapsed) so maybe he had different chicken in his. This is where the acrid smell was coming from. They indeed tasted burned but not as I said like from the grill. And it took me a little while to put my finger on it. Grilled chicken, as this place advertises its food is, this chicken was shredded. Grilled chicken doesn't shred, braised or boiled chicken shreds. This chicken had been put in water and left to scorch on the stove when the water boiled off. That was the acrid taste and smell. Even if you pick out the burn stuff the entire pot takes on that flavor and smell. You can't get rid of it. This is what they served me. My theory is they took their leftover grilled chicken from days gone by and stuck it in a pot with water to heat it up and shred it for the Sunday service. But it scorched. And the still sent it out. Voted third best Mexican restaurant in the country B. S.! They must have a very large family that voted for them because the lack of care that they show does not warrant that kind of standing. California Burrito serves better food, free chips and salsa bar instead of the $8 they charge you here for chips and salsa that most people say the chips are stale. Worth the drive from wherever you are! We saw this place had great reviews so we made the drive out from Folsom. Absolutely made the right decision. Don't be scared off by the weird little strip of dead businesses this place is located next to, once you're inside it's nice and clean. Owner was super friendly and detailed when explaining the menu and ingredients to us. We shared the steak plate, bone marrow plate, and elote. Bone marrow looked a little pricey at first but worth every penny, they top it with meat and you get zucchini rice and tortillas to make a well rounded meal. My steak plate was also really good, super tender, nice char, very flavorful. Elote was decent, good flavor, but maybe the corn was a little overcooked/soggy.
