I feel like I'm always on the hunt for awesome Mongolian BBQ. Since I'm hella fat I love going to places where I can eat non stop. Today we gave this place a try after reading the Yelp reviews and realizing it may be the most legit Mongolian bbq in the area. Walked in and were immediately seated. We were asked what kind of soup we wanted. Egg flour or hot and sour. We were offered drinks as well. White rice was served. Since we were starving and wanted to get home to watch the giants game, we went up and got food right after being seated. There was a decent variety of meats and for the first time I saw crab as an option. Noodles and lots of fresh veggies to choose from as well. The only place I've seen seafood at a Mongolian BBQ type of place is fire and ice in south Lake Tahoe. Although I stuck with mostly veggies, my husband did enjoy the beef. We did pour a lot of sauce on our bowls before cooking. The sesame seeds and peanuts were and nice to put on after it was cooked. By the time we left the place got pretty busy. I love this place. The food is very fresh you have a salad bar two types of noodles 4 to 6 different types of meat. THey add shrimp and crab meat at dinner and have several different kinds of vegetables that you could choose from... plus they have many different kind of sauces that you can add. I like to add extra sauce just so they use less water...and the flavor is richer... and after they cook it...they have sesame seeds...peanuts or hot sauce that you can add on top of it. I'm updating my review as it appears someone else has taken over/ownership of this establishment. The lady with the short black bob was EXTREMELY rude and hostile toward me from the moment I walked in. The service was trash!!!! I asked her a question about the soup of the day and she ignored me, I asked for a straw and she pointed in the direction for me to get it myself (when she saw I wasn't going to get it she got the straw and dropped it in my table). She didn't count my change back to me, and even when I held my hand out she placed it on the table. I will not step one foot in this place again after being a long time customer! I was so excited to see such a highly rated Mongolian BBQ in Carmichael, but my experience was not that exciting. Li's Mongolian BBQ is a traditional Mongolian BBQ style restaurant along Manzanita across the street from the Save Mart. There is parking in the rear if the front area is packed, but getting out may be tough. The interior appears to be an old diner converted to Asian duty. It is a bit run down, but it has large windows making the inside open and full of light. The layout is simple with a large seating area and the buffet. I was impressed by the selection of meats available on the weekend including lamb, shrimp, and imitation crab. You can choose between the thick egg noodles or smaller wheat noodles or just go commando. The overall effect was rather muted as the sauces lacked a distinct flavor. Other places have recommended combinations of sauce for a specific effect. The process was very slow especially with a crowded room with the cooking time taking a bit longer. The meat was very good with a wide variety of vegetables. Li's is a popular neighborhood Mongolian BBQ serving affordable AYCE for those willing to wait. It was packed with young families and teenagers who are the target market. I am probably past my Mongolian phase in life, but this one is a solid three star option in the region. read more

Li's doesn't look like much from the outside, nor inside really for that matter but when me and my wife arrived we were pleased to see the place quite busy. The to go option is very reasonably priced at $12, the all you can eat version I believe was $14. Love to see that you can still build your own bowl in the wake of Covid as well. The food all seemed fresh and well maintained, there was somebody changing out trays pretty consistently and keeping the areas clean. The quality of the meat and veggies was good (I don't think one should expect exceptional from a $12 buffet). The sauce options were what you would expect and the cooks gladly filled up very large to go containers from our overflowing bowls. Rice was a free add on as well. The food was pretty pretty good and we had enough for a second meal. All in all Li's might not be something to write home about but what it does it does very well. After trying a few MG BBQ spots around Sacramento we will be coming back to Li's next time we want our fix. It really pains me to write this review because I've been going to this place since 2015, but I have to write this because I feel so frustrated with the customer service. I remember when I first started going here there was an owner(?) or person that served me every time and she was very nice, welcoming, attentive, and we even shared our own stories together. Ever since I left for college I missed this place because it reminded me of home. When I visited again during break the person I was with had kids and I was happy for her, but that also meant new management and a server who would welcome me. This new server is infuriating. I don't know her name, but I come here pretty often and she's the only one to serve me after COVID and the management switch(?). Anyways, I love their egg flower soup and would always ask for extras (as I always get the all you can eat option, so I'm just getting what I paid for). For about 2-3 years now she's been consistently rude to me whenever I ask for egg soup; she would lightly slam the egg soup in front of my friends and I, take the mini bowl off my hands with aggression, sometimes would make comments that were hard to hear but the attitude was definitely there, and one time she even gave me a big bowl (5-6x the normal size of the usual bowl) of egg soup (albeit it was funny af when she did it, my friends and I had a good laugh). Keep in mind that I love this place and I tried my best to be very soft with my words with her. When I ask, it's always a polite tone and I'm always smiles when I see her. To be honest, I didn't even mind the rude behavior until my friends and even my family mentioned that I should say something. Even then I just let it slide because at the end of the day I was still getting what I paid for, and I was still getting served. That was until a year ago when I noticed that she was actively avoiding going near my table (maybe because she knew I was going to ask for egg soup) and had stopped serving me and whoever I brought to the restaurant. It was very noticeable, my friends and family made comments on it, and we even waited an hour one time to see if she would come to at least refill waters. She didn't. But even through all of that I didn't write a review. Until today. Today she was especially rude to me. We do the usual check in, pay, find a table and eat. I was with my brother. She asks us what soup we want, and gives us the egg soup. After we had finished our egg soup, food and my water, I waited until she was done with her tasks until I can catch her attention. Keep in mind the restaurant isn't busy; there might've been 2 more tables occupied besides ours. There was one point when I was even turned around from my seat and made eye contact with her, yet she didn't come up. But maybe she just missed it, and it's not like I asked for her or anything, so of course maybe she just didn't know, so I get up with the 2 bowls of finished egg soup and my water cup to get a refill. The minute I got up I noticed she went to the back. Okay, I'll just wait at the front. She comes out after 2-3 minutes and I ask her if we can please have some more egg soup. She tells me that she'll check to see the back, and just takes the bowls and my water cup fast. I didn't even get to ask for a water refill, but maybe she knew what I wanted. She comes back out with just one egg soup and a sweet and sour soup (which we didn't ask for), she tells us they don't have anymore egg soup, and tries to walk away quickly after saying her piece. I stop her and ask if I can have my water refill. She rudely tells me "you gave me your cup" then as I was about to explain myself, she gives me a dirty look and goes to give me a water. I mean, does it matter in the first place? It wasn't busy, she wasn't in a rush, I just wanted more water? I didn't see the problem, or why she gave me attitude or why it keeps being a frequent thing. And yes, my brother commented on it. Sorry this was a long write, I just feel very disrespected. I've been nice, have always gave a smile, and even when she was rude I would say thank you for her service. She doesn't have to do the same; I've worked service before I know how rough it can be. She doesn't owe me a smile, but I definitely don't deserve the rudeness. read more

I'm currently on a quest to find a new Mongolian barbecue restaurant. I can only really grade them on their vegetables as that's primarily what I get. I can say that the vegetables were crispy and they cooked up perfectly. The hot and sour soup was the spiciest I have ever had but I absolutely loved it! The rice was kind of sticky rice, but that made it a lot easier to hold on the chopsticks so I wasn't mad about that at all. I came to Li's Mongolian BBQ for lunch mid week because I had driven by it quite a few times, and I saw Bridget W's stellar review. Sold! When I pulled up there was only one family eating inside and me. For $6.99 I decided to make my own bowl and take it back to the office. "All you can eat" doesn't work as well for me as it does for most people because one bowl IS all I can eat with leftovers for the next day. If you stay in the restaurant to eat you have access to their nice fresh salad bar which I thought was a great idea to go with your otherwise carb filled feast. Since I was getting mine to go, I got some white rice and a bowl of hot and sour soup. Nice! Note: Both the hot and sour soup and the egg drop soup are Vegetarian. For my main course they had a great selection of fresh veggies and TOFU to choose from. They also had meat (for the carnivores) and two types of noodles. I chose the bigger noodles with broccoli, tofu and mushrooms. They also had 10 sauces to choose from which I loved! The chef's suggestion is to use one scoop of each in your bowl, so I chose 10 assorted scoops of what I thought sounded good and it turned out great! Service was amazing, the hostess/cashier was so freakin friendly you can tell she loved being there. I felt very welcome and the food was fresh and tasted great.
