Went here for a Saturday dinner with another couple. The atmosphere is light, airy, and comfortable. We sat inside, but there were several outdoor tables as well with a view of the river. Our table of four ordered the crab bruschetta app and Parmesan and artichoke fritters. Was a bit underwhelmed with the bruschetta. Doubting the crab was fresh. But the fritters were tasty and really liked liked the outer coating which was crisp and kind slight doughy (like a think funnel cake?). I had the sea bass which was cooked nicely and in this delicious tomato broth. The beans were slight undercooked in my opinion but still good. My husband got the flank steak and enjoyed that. They have a nice drink menu and thought the prices were reasonable for craft cocktails. They were out of the dessert I wanted, so we skipped out on that. Service was very good. Overall enjoyed and look forward to going back. read more

Linear is a really remarkable restaurant. I love it here! What a beautiful setting, Linear overlooks the river and has a nice patio for when the weather is nice. There's a parking lot adjacent to it with free (after 5pm) parking. A rare occurrence in downtown GR. The menu changes a lot, the culinary team always keeps things fresh. I love the tempura sugar snap peas. Crispy, salty, and just the right amount of spice. I'll order that again no doubt. I also like the beet gnocchi. It's a beautiful, colorful dish. The best part about linear is probably the super knowledgeable bar staff. They literally can make everything and I've had some amazing drinks here. Pro tip: ask for the (shhhhh) secret tiki menu for an amazing tiki style drink in a fun glass! Keep up the good work Linear! read more

The food here is fantastic! The sweet pea gnocchi is personally my favorite dish. The spinach coconut salad is a great starter, as well. We had really good service. A storm was rolling in and the workers hustled to get everyone a spot inside before it was too late. Cocktail fave: it had de Muertos in the name, but I can't remember it exactly. It had Tequila and poblano liqueur. Linear Restaurant - Caesar Salad with chicken - New American Near Me - Grand Rapids, Michigan

I went to Linear Restaurant thinking I was taking my mom to a nice restaurant for Mother's Day. The restaurant is very cute and it's on the water which is a plus; however, I'm not sure how this restaurant has a 4.6 rating. If I could go less than a 1 star I would. My mom ordered a garden salad. It looked like it was lettuce thrown onto a plate. She also order the Baja sea bass. The top layer of the fish had scales that she has to remove before consumption. The fish came served on cranberry beans which were hard. Physically too hard to eat. I know how beans are supposed to be eaten, after all I am Spanish. The assortment of food did not look pretty or presentable for $26. When my mom received her plate I thought it must have been a mistake. I ordered order blueberry BBQ half chicken (a daily special). The chicken was so tough it was hard to cut with a fork and knife. It was served over cold (like refrigerated cold) what I think was polenta (I could be wrong on whether it was polenta or not). The polenta had vegetables in it but, the freezing cold polenta was a terrible combination with hot chicken and braised kale. The corn bread was the only thing I ate. I had to give the waitress my full uneaten plate because it was so terrible. I tried to stomach my plate the best I could but then could no longer pretend. My mother ordered rhubarb galette for dessert which was less than impressive. I ordered the dark chocolate mousse for dessert which would have been great without the fruity filling. I feel terrible that I brought my mom to an expensive restaurant to leave hungry. It was an expensive mistake. I will say the best thing about the whole night was the waitress, Christina F. She was very sweet and kind. I am so disappointed in our experience at this restaurant. I wish I didn't have to write a novel about how awful everything was, but for my own sanity I am. I feel a bit tricked and scammed . read more

Linear Restaurant - Receipt for proof - New American Near Me - Grand Rapids, Michigan

Went to Linear for a much needed girls night with two friends. It was a great environment for conversation with a nice view of the park and water. The artichoke fritters (3 in an order) were probably my favorite thing, crispy in the outside and creamy interior . The king crab bruschetta (3 pieces per order) was "missing" something for me seasoning wise, it was just OK. My friends ordered the spring pea gnocchi and waygu flank and were very happy with their meals. My risotto was creamy and had al dente veggies as expected, but either needed more parmesan or salt in the finishing stage. I ended up asking for one of their salt grinders (not on the tables due to covid) and gave it 2-3 grinds to balance it off, but what it really needed was a good dusting of parm for the saltiness/nuttiness that the cheese provides. Side note: I appreciated that they have an Amaro list of 12 options. I just finished reading a book about Amaro and liked the option of ordering a flight of them! Since it's a niche liqueur, it would be really cool if they added a few words description for each to help guide novices. read more

Linear was just okay. We were greeted warmly at the host stand and were seated right away. We were then greeted by our server within a few minutes. Good customer service and great front-of-house staff! The only thing lacking from a customer service perspective was the food runner. The runner didn't say anything to us other than the names of the dishes. Unfortunately, the food felt lacking in flavor for the price. The potato starter was okay, but the potatoes needed more salt, and they needed way more of the (very yummy) sauce to really be a complete dish. The most upsetting course of the night was the caesar salad. We were served the center of a head of romaine, so it was quite bitter and we had to eat around the core. Plus, it just seems silly to make the customer do the work of cutting and cleaning the lettuce. The dressing on the salad was just okay, and we were befuddled by the random raw red onion on the side of the plate - didn't seem to go with the other flavors at all. The entrees were very good. We had the poulet rouge chicken and the spring pea gnocchi. The chicken was perfectly salted and the polenta was good. The spring pea gnocchi was delightful, but lacking in (very yummy) sauce, just like the potatoes. We were planning to order dessert until we saw the desserts going to other tables. They were so small and seemed more about presentation than quantity. Based on the taste of the rest of the meal, we decided to get dessert elsewhere rather than spending another $9-13 on food we weren't sure we'd enjoy. Linear is just not worth the price for me - there are better restaurants in GR for less cost. read more

My husband and I first tried Linear during Restaurant Week, not long after they first opened. First impressions were really strong. The atmosphere was really bright, with lots of great natural light. We were seated on the side to the right of the entrance, where the high top tables are. It was just the two of us, so a high top was fine. I didn't love being at a table so close to the restrooms, and very close to the entrance. It's a slightly awkward layout in that respect. The food made up for it though. Every course we had was delicious! The portions were small, being Restaurant Week, but it was five courses, and everything we ate was incredible! (photos attached, with descriptions) My second visit was for a post-workout drink with a few friends, and most of us ended up eating as well. It's so nice that their drink list is extensive enough to offer something for all tastes. A few of my friends had wine, a couple had mixed drinks, and I had a beer. We were seated at one of the larger tables in the main dining side this time. It was much darker lighting, since it seems the majority of their light is natural and it was night time in the fall. Michigan obviously doesn't get much sunlight that time of year. I ordered the full size portion of the farro dish I'd had my previous visit, and was again blown away at how delicious it was! The portion was also large enough to bring home leftovers, which I love. My most recent visit was not as satisfying. My husband and I chose the restaurant to have dinner with my parents for Christmas, and we picked Linear since we'd had such great previous experiences. I was able to get a reservation through OpenTable easily, at a time we wanted. I really appreciate when restaurants offer OpenTable reservations. That was maybe the highlight this visit. Our table was fine, but it was VERY dark. We were seated a back corner table at the far end of the dining room. It was nice to be far from the door, since it was really cold out, but the lighting is a little strange; it's just so dark. Our server was not the friendliest we'd had, and didn't seem entirely familiar with the menu or drink list. Maybe she was just having a bad day, or was burned out since it was near the holidays. I can look past that, since overall she was fine. My first main disappointment is that the farro dish I love so much was no longer on the menu. I ordered a fish dish instead, and it was just ok. My husband ordered an entree with steak on it, cooked medium. It was pretty much well done. My stepmom is gluten intolerant, and there were not nearly as many GF items on the menu from what I remembered. She basically ended up with a salad. My dad said his food was fine. Nothing was really bad enough to say anything to a manager, it was just disappointing after two previously great experiences. Based on the most recent experience I know my parents will not be returning. Since I had two good experiences I'll at least give it one more shot. 4 stars instead of 5 due to the most recent experience. If I was only going off of my first two visits I probably would have rated 5 stars. read more

Have eaten here twice now and both times were excellent. I had the roast chicken, I never order chicken in restaurants because I cook it myself all the time. Well I do not cook it as well as Linear, and I will be ordering it there again! Also their bar choices are expansive, and their specialty drink selections are creative and delicious. Like everyone else in the country they tend to be running short staffed, so I won't dock them a star for that. Be nice to the waitstaff, the ones we have had have all been great. read more

Atmosphere: Made a reservation at linear through resy which was really easy. You can choose between indoor and outdoor dining which is great because you should absolutely go here for outdoor dining. The river view is incredible. We sat close to the restaurant rather than right up against the river and still had a good view. This might not be obvious, but it's a good place to watch the sunset. Food : I had the avocado margarita, crab bruschetta, cheddar focaccia, and the spinach coconut salad. It was like 50% amazing to die for and about 50% a strike out. I would highly recommend the focaccia which I think anyone would like. It's a loaf of bread with a huge amount of melty cheese baked inside almost bread bowl style. The outside was so perfectly crispy and the bread was very soft and herby inside. The spinach salad was also amazing. There was a nice interplay between spicy and crunchy and then sweet cool creamy elements. I felt the crab bruschetta did not highlight its ingredients well and then the balsamic sauce was too overpowering and soggy. Cocktails: Where I felt linear could have done much better was the drinks. Reading the menu they have clearly had someone think hard about the cocktail menu and they looked so good but when we ordered both my drink and my partner's drink were clearly watery and light in color. Not to the point of being mixed improperly that day because the alcohol strength was appropriate but where I felt perhaps it had been designed this way, a bit on the light end flavor wise. I personally feel that people ordering a craft cocktail are looking for a strong and interesting flavor. Unless I saw an obvious change there, next time we would stick to wine! read more

This might be my new favorite restaurant in Grand Rapids. I stopped here on a Sunday evening prior to a musical at Devos Hall. Perfect distance from the theater for drinks and dinner. I ordered a #10 to drink and my mom ordered a # 6. The 10 was a strawberry infused cola, basil and lemonade. It was very good--perfect for warm days. My mom got a 6: ginger beer, fernet, gin, lemon and cucumber. It was surprising very good. Extremely unique, but I'd totally get one next time. The atmosphere was very modern and clean with beautiful views of downtown and the river. The place was airy and inviting. You can make reservations online, I did not, but would recommend on a fri or sat night. We got a the Brussels sprouts appetizer, the sweet potato gnocchi and the squash Bolognese. I LOVED the gnocchi! I'm craving it again. It was just perfect! The flavors and texture of the apples and sweet potatoes were perfect. I tried my moms bolognese and liked that as well. She really enjoyed it and was surprised the noodles were so "light". I'm not a Brussels sprout fan, but my mom is and said the appetizer was just ok. She would not order it again. read more

This was an enjoyable place to have a really nice dinner. We came here tonight with our two kids and each shared a plate and two appetizers. We had two glasses of white wine each. Silver Ridge Chardonnay-CA (my favorite) Michel Picard Vouvray-France. We started with the Roasted Fig Fondue... soooo tasty. I ordered the Charred Citrus Salad. Also very tasty! A very enjoyable meal in a part of town I hadn't frequented. My only negatives would be that I had to stuff coins in a parking meter in the parking lot. Kinda lame. Additionally, the atmosphere seemed disjointed. The menu was somewhat of a French inspired cuisine, while the interior ambiance seemed like a garden cafe, and the music was classic Reggae. Could really tie it all together with a common denominator... read more

A lot of art, not a lot of substance. Very simple menu, most dishes consist of just few basic ingredients. Food was artful but not filling. What a great new place! We visited Linear on a Thursday evening for dinner - it was a very cute, new, clean restaurant inside of a cool new building on Monroe. There isn't a lot specifically for them, but the Park lot is right next to them. They also have a patio, right on the river side of the building. The service was really good - we were seated and promptly greeted by our server. She did a good job the entire night, being attentive to us without smothering us. She even took care of me when I didn't like my drink that I had ordered by giving me a new one. All of the staff seemed very friendly. We ordered from the Signature cocktail menu, and all enjoyed the drinks (#3 was especially good). We ordered the cornbread from the shareables to eat ahead of our dinner. It came out as one little tiny cake, and we poorly managed to cut it into thirds, and each had a bite. The flavor was okay, but honestly, it was black on the bottom and hard as hell. Not sure if that is the norm, or if we got a bad serving of it. But I definitely wouldn't recommend it. For dinner, we ordered the Waygu Flank Steak, the Beet Gnocchi, and the Steelhead Salmon. The portions were a little smaller than we expected, but they were all exceptionally good. Initially, the prices seemed lower than we expected, until we received our portions, and then it made sense. It's a very nice place with good food, and with portion size factored in, the price does reflect that. It makes it an affordable meal. We decided to order dessert since we needed a bit more food, and I am so glad we did. My friend ordered the baklava, but I ordered the cherry bread pudding (comes with a little scoop of vanilla ice cream) and it was PHENOMENAL. If you come here and don't eat anything else, get the bread pudding! I would love to go back again just to get that! Overall, I would totally recommend dining at this restaurant! Nice little place! read more

Came here on a quiet Sunday while the lunch menu was out. After walking in, the place was empty but that was probably for the best since it was a large party and we were THAT party somehow. Kudos to the poor souls working that day. What started as a party of 6 grew to 14 then dropped to 8. They didn't miss a beat and were very accommodating. The atmosphere of the space is great. There's a great outdoor seating area (that I have yet to experience) with a view of the water. The interior is very well, linear, but is broken up well with a wonderful array of plants that really plays up the amount of windows in the place. Restrooms are well above average also. Now to the food. There was a mix up with the food and it was handled swiftly. I had what the server described as a 'gourmet grilled cheese' it was a wonderful play on apples and brie. Just about the entire menu was ordered and everyone got nice and quiet once the food came. That is generally a great sign, right? I'd definitely be all for going back. read more

When we heard that chef Chris from Vivant was going to be the chef at a new place we already knew it would be good. We came in on a Saturday night with 4 friends. We loved that there was plenty of parking and that the restaurant is on the river (outside seating coming soon). Even from outside the decor and branding of the restaurant looks great. A lot of attention clearly went into every detail. We especially loved the whimsical fonts on the menu. The first thing you will notice is how small the menu is. This is something we really appreciated that is missing from many places in GR. We love a menu where the chef directs you to only a few choices - all of which are amazing. For drinks I started with a smoked bourbon cocktail that was not only fantastic but only $8. To start for food we had the carrot purée with scallops and onions. It was delicate and rich with flavor. The bread it came with was light and airy and perfect for dipping. For entrees we ordered almost one of everything. I personally had the quail- it had a good stuffing and a honey type sauce that gave a good amount of sweetness. My wife did the veggie risotto which she said was fantastic. Our friend ordered the beet gnocchi which was the perfect portion size for gnocchi and had a good flavor. For desert my wife and I both ordered the cherry bread pudding- it was almost like a slice of pie. Great flavor and texture. We will definitely be back!! read more

So we finally decided to come back after our initial visit when it was first opened. The menu has changed but it is still very good, perhaps even a little bit better now that they've worked out the kinks. Although it isn't really near the downtown hub (as far as being walkable if you're headed out to a concert or something and you parked in one of the parking structures) it still has a great location with relaxing views of the river. When the weather permits you can sit in their outdoor area right by the water. read more

We came here once and it was delicious! We are here again and it's terrible, almost inedible. The braised beef in the pasta tasted funky, and had a bad texture, I was having a hard time swallowing it. Maybe they got a new chef? I hate leaving 1 star reviews but there wasn't many redeeming qualities of my meal at all. Not to mention it's sooo expensive. My soupy pasta was $27, and that's one of the cheaper menu items. The location is nice though, disappointing that this restaurant takes up a spot on the river. I am SO happy Linear exists! Went with my friend for his birthday. First impression was how nicely spaced out seating is, not too cramped but still inviting. Decorations are great (bonus for no edison bulbs yay!) and bathroom had the best smelling soap ever. Were greeted with water by a supremely nice woman then our server helped us pick drinks, because they have a ton of options! We ordered the vegan tamale, wagyu steak, and the michigan guinea hens which were a dinner special, followed by the chocolate mouse and yogurt cake. I can't exaggerate how TASTY everything was! The prices were lower than most new places so I was expecting small servings, but was pleasantly surprised by being full by the end of our meal with perfect portions. My friend and I shared all of our food which y'all should absolutely do too. This is my second time leaving a review for Linear because I truly can not express what an awesome experience this place provides. Especially considering the times and the craziness of all things COVID related, this staff was responsible, safe, helpful, and still as kind and efficient as ever! Having had such a great experience the first time we came here for our anniversary, I was excited to come back for a date night a few months later. Our experience this time was just as good, if not better than the first time we came to Linear. And not only is the staff friendly, helpful, and welcoming, the food is JUST WOW! Seriously, definitely one of the best in GR. My boyfriend got the Wagyu Steak and I had one of the salads with salmon, and it could not have been made any better! And considering the atmosphere, the food presentation, and the flavor of the food, the prices are incredibly reasonable. Great food and service, fantastic ambience. Always wonderful vegetarian options and knowledgeable staff.

My wife and I have eaten dinner at Linear probably 6-7 times the last couple of years for during all different seasons. Every time we go, I'm continually impressed by the chef and the changing menu. I have never had a dish twice, and each dish I've had has been superb. Most recently we went for Valentines Day and I got the Duck Manicotti (which I've never seen on the menu and was probably a rotation for winter) and it was off the charts. Contrary to myself, my wife gets the same thing almost every time, the Wagyu Flank Steak, which is reliable and consistently fantastic. For the quality of food, atmosphere, and price points of the food, it's probably unmatched in downtown Grand Rapids. We have never been disappointed. read more

I came here with a friend for dinner in the middle of the week. We were one of three tables and had excellent service. The menu was smaller than most, but everything sounded good. We had the cucumber quinoa salad and carrot and scallop pot de creme. The pot de creme was almost like a dip or spread that was served with focaccia bread. I absolutely loved it. The flavors complimented each other really well and I would have never thought that scallops would be perfect for it. The salad was plated beautifully. I was excited because it had some of my favorite things: cucumber, tzatziki, and swiss chard. My only complaint is that it was a little bland and I couldn't cut or chew the swiss chard. With that being said, the setting of the restaurant was beautiful and it was nice being able to see the water while we ate. The back bar was a great focal point for the restaurant and I liked the design. This would be a great place for dinner with friends or family. read more

So will start off with the Owner Himself is very rude. First bad experience started with the Chef or kitchen person, we ordered the Waygu and someone in our party had food allergies which was stated to the server. The chef or someone who worked in the kitchen came out and said who doesn't like blue cheese, we told him someone had allergy and he proceeded to say well that's the point of the dish if you don't eat it with the blue cheese then you're eating it wrong. We got the point but still refused it then he said I'll just put it on the side so you can try it. They really ignored the fact of the allergy. I will say food at this location is very good, enjoyed it very much, had the octopus and the waygu also got the pork belly. Our server was extremely friendly and very nice. We ordered a second round of drinks and waited at least 40 mins not a big deal we were cool with that. The server very nicely apologized and said I will take care of your drinks for you guys cause she's providing excellent customer service. The owner himself comes over and says to on of the girls oh I hope you enjoy that wine that I paid for you. In a non joking way. We were shocked with this response cause never had anything like it. Who does that? Definitely ruined the night. Cute location, good food, but owner is not a pleasant person, not what you want for a restaurant reputation amongst your guest and staff. read more

Was in town for work and stumbled across this restaurant with the team. We decided to make a reservation for dinner, and were not disappointed! The space is absolutely beautiful. Our server promptly took our drink order and we each had a glass of wine to go along with our charcuterie plate and puff pastry app. I will say, the appetizers were a bit underwhelming, but on to the mains. The server explained the specials for that evening and we were intrigued. There was a wagyu beef special that was melt-in-your-mouth amazing. I also tried the duck, which was yummy -- though it's quite fatty and the flavor may be a little sweet for some. 2 at our table got the crab special, which takes time to cook and delayed our meal quite a bit, but they said it was spicy and delicious (though be prepared to work for that meat!) Wish they would have warned us before ordering of any cook time outliers, but that's ok. The chef and co-owner (I think?) came out to chat with us and explain what was going on behind the scenes and that made such a big difference in our dining experience. He is truly passionate about what he does and it shows! We even got to try a new (yummy and unique) ice cream recipe he recently came up with. Great personal touch. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the GR area. read more

I wanted to give Linear a second chance for brunch after a disappointing dinner in October. The menu seems very appealing but unfortunately the food both times we dined came out lukewarm at best. A little bit lackluster in flavor as well. We had a table of 7 and 2 of the orders arrived a good 10 minutes after the others. There was no offer for discount or compensation of our hefty bill. The service was flat . Really not a lot of attention to the table in a moderately busy section of tables. The ambiance is cute and really the place has potential. Sadly we won't return. read more
