As another part of my Valentine's Day surprise, we went to Lindey's this morning for brunch. I'd been wanting to try this restaurant for a while, and I always love going out for brunch.
I was excited for Lindey's - a cute little brick building in German Village. It looks like the style of many other brick buildings in the area and is found on a brick street.
But right off the bat we made a mistake. We got up, got ready and drove over to Lindey's. We went inside, only to be greeted by the host who informed us that they didn't open until 11. Aaaaand it was 10:30. Our fault! So we went for a Sunday morning drive (no longer unthinkable since gas prices are reasonable again) and came back at 11. That was totally our fault, but I will say that it annoyed me that they weren't open a little earlier for brunch on a Sunday.
Anyway, parking wasn't a problem and we found a spot on the street, both the first and second times in the same spot. By the time we made our way back to Lindey's, it was about 11:05 and there were already a few tables inside. I guess it fills up fast. But we were still there early and had no problem getting a table. They seated us at this little corner booth.
We were given glasses of water and menus. Then someone came by and gave us the brunch menus, which is what we wanted in the first place. The brunch menus were on these separate little cards. The tablecloths and napkins were fabric yet the menus were cardstock. Whatever. I liked the atmosphere - it was fresh but quaint. For example, the old brick walls contrasted with the modern artwork hanging here and there. I couldn't exactly tell how big it was in here. It seemed like the dining room went back into another section, but we were seated right behind the hostess station so we couldn't tell. So all we got to see was the front part of the restaurant. At the very front side was a big bar and we could see down a bit of a hallway that I believe led to the kitchen.
It didn't take us long to decide what we wanted. I ordered the Stuffed French Toast and Jeff got the Eggs Rancheros. While we were waiting we were served a bread basket with a plate of butter. The bread was good, but it was just your basic sourdough. The butter was cold and hard to spread on the bread. It wasn't a very exciting bread bowl, however, there were some crispy wedges in there that had baked cheese and sesame seeds on top. I tried it and it was alright but I definitely wasn't in the mood for that in the morning.
As far as the other diners went, we didn't seem to fit in. It was a lot of older wealthy people who looked as if they came here every Sunday after church.
Luckily we didn't have to wait very long for our food and we were pretty hungry. Both of our meals looked great. But they were both served on these big white plates that said Lindey's on the top rim. It sort of reminded me of Perkins, if you remember that place. Jeff said his breakfast (or brunch, sorry) was good, but not necessarily anything special, but the portion size was right. He finished it all. It was two eggs sunny side up over ham with sides of salsa, sour cream, refried beans and guacamole and it came with tortilla triangles. Honestly, it looked like something he could get anywhere else and he said it tasted as such. And for $12, it didn't seem like a good deal.
My food was filling and rich but it was a real treat. I had six triangles of French toast, and between each pair of triangles was a mix of cream cheese, bananas pecans and cinnamon. It was topped with sliced strawberries and powdered sugar. Then two slices of bacon were laid on top and I had a tiny pitcher of syrup on the side. It was very good, but in all reality quite similar to things I've had at IHOP. But the quality was definitely better. I was happy with my brunch, but it was so rich and sweet that I couldn't eat all that much. My meal was about $9, which wasn't bad at all considering that I couldn't eat it all in one sitting. I had to get a box to take half of it home. We'll see how that holds up for tomorrow's breakfast. When one of the servers came to clear our table he also took my plate and boxed my leftovers for me in a little box and put it in a paper bag.
Lindey's was a good experience but there was certainly nothing exceptional about it. I'm not sure if we'll be back. I think that if we are, we'll have to give lunch or dinner a try, but based on this experience we weren't too impressed. Maybe we had been spoiled by Bexley Monk the night before or maybe we just ordered the wrong meals. I'd give it a chance again, but I think for brunch I'll stick to cheap First Watch or delicious Mimi's. read more
