My first appointment with Dr. Kim was great. She actually did the cleaning herself, not the hygienist. She showed me pictures of some old fillings, and said they needed to be replaced. She also said I *might* have a cavity between two back teeth, and recommended another appointment to address these things. Support staff were very warm and welcoming.
I called and got a Saturday appointment about a week later. What I wasn't told was that the appointment was with another dentist. In fact, I literally never heard anything about this other dentist until he walked through the door (not when I made the appt, not in a confirmation text, not when I checked in). And things didn't go well with him.
First, I wasn't properly numbed for the Novocaine? shot. In the past, I've actually never felt the shot, or just minimally felt a pinch. When he gave the injection on the right side, it was incredibly painful, and when he was done I mentioned that seemed unexpectedly painful. He then proceeded to the left side. Then he hit a nerve. I'm talking shooting pain up my face. I felt it instantly in my sinuses (my nose started running), my eye got suddenly painful, I literally screamed the eff word out of shock and pain. And what did the dentist do? Literally nothing at all-no explanation, no apology, just silence. I wanted to walk out at this point (and should have), but I couldn't imagine going through this again. When the dentist left the room, the hygienist was like "man, I'm so sorry that happened to you".
After the injections he applied more topical numbing agent. Well that worked! My mouth, tongue, and face (including eyelids!) were totally numb for 9 hours! Having the back of your tongue numb is no good-it feels like it's cutting off your airway. For the first time ever, I thought I might have a panic attack (I don't get those). I couldn't properly close my mouth, eat, or drink the entire day. He also used a dental dam (I had never heard of this). Google it if you don't know what it is. It felt like I was being suffocated, which maybe if things hadn't been so scary up until that point, I wouldn't have felt so panicky and would have had some trust in the process. I honestly had the thought "maybe I'm complying in my own murder". I had pain in one of these teeth for nearly a year after the appointment, and it is STILL sensitive. I had NO pain at all before this appointment. I'm wondering if I even needed this procedure. Remember that cavity was supposedly a "maybe"!
I'm not new to dental care. I had 6 years of orthodontics with head gear, lip bumpers, all kinds of indignities, I've had wisdom teeth out, I've had fillings before. I don't love going to the dentist, but I'm not phobic. This wasn't normal. I picked this office because of the great reviews. I didn't expect to have an experience like this here. I honestly feel traumatized and I'm not using that word lightly. I was scared. I emailed the clinic after it happened, hoping to avoid a yelp review (I really don't enjoy leaving negative reviews-I always give the business a chance to explain), but I never got a reply. Now a year later they are leaving me messages telling me to schedule and that they will try to only schedule me with Dr. Kim ONLY (so they got my message, they just never followed up.)
To summarize, either find another clinic, or make sure you schedule with Dr. Kim (they won't tell you if you're not). Good luck. read more
