I had not seriously been back to this conspicuous standalone kiosk in Civic Center since Bi-Rite Cafe closed over a year ago. Well, there was one early evening when Jamie W and I stopped for a sweet treat before heading to dinner elsewhere. We shared the $5.99 Single Scoop of Mint Chip Gelato which provided us with genuine creamy satisfaction (Photo 8). I came back months later because lucky me, I was picked for a jury at Superior Court. Lunch breaks were quite liberal, and this was a quick stroll away with plenty of outdoor seating, especially for solitary diners like myself. I first tried the $14.95 Beets Salad, a pretty standard but fresh-tasting mix of arugula, mixed greens, melon radish, roasted pecans, goat cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette (Photo 9). It was good, though I have to admit I know Limoncello's original Sutter St location for their hearty, Italian-style deli sandwiches. On my most recent visit, I finally went for the $16.95 Petto di Pollo Sandwich which showcases their Mediterranean chicken breast layered with Swiss cheese, organic greens, peperoncini, tomato, black pepper, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar (Photo 10). It was tasty and satisfying though I wouldn't have minded some fries or even a bag of chips on the side. Well, it took the city's judicial system to get me to come here, but hey, it worked. The owner of this place needs to talk to their staff because the staff may be short changing him and customers may be getting scammed Their posted hours on Google and their own website say they close at 6 pm. I ordered a sandwich around 5 PM from their website and they said pickup time would be around 525 PM. Well before their posted closure time. I get to the place around 530... AND NOBODY IS INSIDE. The place looks like it closed up shop already. I walk around looking for an employee. I see a single person cleaning tables and ask if they're an employee. He confirmed he is and I asked if they had my sandwich. He looked at me with confusion. I show him my phone with the order confirmation. He goes back in and says they never received the order... BUT then he said, his manager told him to close at 530. That doesn't explain why my sandwich that I ordered at 5 PM wasn't made before the pickup time of 525 PM. It's like the workers of this place are deliberately closing early to not work anymore. I asked for a refund since my sandwich wasn't made or ready. But the employee said he didn't know how to do that. Eventually he made my sandwich but at that point it was close to 6 pm. Well past the pick up time. Owner needs to look into this. Limoncello is offering a 20% discount this week (8/18/25 - 8/22/25) for government employees. So I had to take advantage of the opportunity to try more sandwiches off their menu. I got the Toscana sandwich, which came with Italian dry salami, Swiss cheese, mixed greens, tomatoes, peperoncini, Dijon mustard, black pepper, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar on a Dutch crunch. I thought I could eat the whole thing because I hadn't eaten breakfast, but I could only eat half. I saved the other half for dinner, and it held up well. This sandwich had some heat to it! It might've been both the black pepper and mustard. But I enjoyed it. The salami was salty, and was balanced with the tangy balsamic and mellow Swiss cheese. I hadn't tried their gelato yet, so I actually came back a few hours later. I got the balsamic caramel gelato and it was interesting. It was a tad heavy on the vinegar to the point that it felt more savory. I think either having more caramel or fresh strawberries would be a good contrast. Hot days are ahead, so I'm definitely going to come back to try more flavors. And they now have a dessert menu, and a picture of what looks like cheesecake labeled "Ricotta Pistachio" caught my eye. So I'm gonna have to make some decisions the next time I come back. It's outdoor seating only, and they recently updated their patio to include umbrellas and greenery to fence the area. On a frosty day, you go for a walk. You want a gigantic sandwich. I got the goodfella. Prosciutto, pastrami , and salami. Best part is the fresh basil. Think Italiano. The sandwich was huge. I ate my half. Two hours later I ate the other half. It was calling me to finish it. The after effects is downing lots of liquids. I'm not sure it is the salt content. I'm not sure if you have to special request the bread because I wasn't asked, though they do have different bread selection you can pick from. Oh, it felt like eating in the open-air patios with outdoor seating in Europe! It was pleasant with sunny weather next to a nice, green park. The umbrellas give a fine, Mediterranean touch with its yellow color choice. It was a no-frills stand that was super popular, I can imagine, for lunch during the weekdays. Limoncello has a new location at Civic Center! It was a perfect place to get lunch during jury duty. They have great sandwiches and other things like salad, pizza, lasagna, gelato, and coffee. It's a booth at Civic Center Plaza, they do takeout and have outdoor seating only. On a nice day, it's a good place to have lunch. Despite being a smaller location, their food tastes the same as the larger Limoncello locations. I got the mafioso which had prosciutto, turkey, mortadella, and bacon! I saw that Limoncello opened their third location at Civic Center Plaza near work. It was my first time visiting a Limoncello location but I know they're hyped and one of the most highly rated sandwich shops in the city (their other two locations have 4.8 stars). Given the hype, the Rompiballe was disappointing. While there was a good amount of meatballs, they were either overworked and/or had too much binder because they were on the dry, dense side. Nice tang from the sauce (not spicy) but def needed more sauce for flavor and moisture. One tiny floss string cheese pull. The soft ciabatta roll was untoasted resulting in the lack of a textural element. I ate the meatballs and tossed the bread. I later found out that they'll only toast the bread if you request it. Good to know! OTHER NOTES: * Array of sandwiches ($14.95-$16.95), salads ($13.95 + $3 for protein), whole pizza ($18.95), and lasagna or eggplant parm ($14.95). By happenstance was starving and popped in to the Civic Center/Grove location. While the menu was a bit overwhelming I ordered the Alpino sandwich. I am a light eater. I thought it was a bit pricey, but this sandwich was MASSIVE and DELICIOUS. It must have been hella fresh because the bread and greens held up for three meals over three days. Definitely worth the spend. And if you are sharing with a friend, you'll be all set. They do take their time so I would go before or after the lunch rush. However, the service was excellent! I gave Mattia the cashier a $2 tip for his nice smile and good service from previous visits. I'm so glad a new business opened here. They have a massive sandwich menu! I tried their Caesar salad and added grilled chicken ($3) and it's a decent size. From their menu- organic romaine hearts, herb garlic crouton, shaved parmesan with Caesar dressing. Everything was good, especially the grilled chicken and the only complaint I have is the croutons were too big and not toasted enough. Nice outdoor seating but that's always reliant on weather (lol) or not it's cold outside and it is more or less cold in the area. Reason I'm hesitant to recommend is solely the price. Got Bay Area money ? Then go for it. I paid $8 for a "medium" and their medium was in a small cup. The coffee is not bad it's just not what I expected for the price. We came to Limoncello for a quick dinner before a show at the Orpheum. My autistic son mainly eats sandwiches so this was perfect. They advertised outdoor seating and I thought we would have enough time to snag a seat before the show. I was out with a few coworkers to participate jn the local return to office promotions happening around the civic center. We decided to get a sandwich at Limoncello. One of my coworkers order her sandwiches and about 1-2 seconds after paying, she remembered she did not show her badge and attempted to plea with the cashier to participate in the promotional pricing. I clearly saw the cashier just shrugged his shoulders and did a hand gesture as if it's no big deal and just go away. When it was finally my turn to order, I asked to speak with the manager to help my coworker only for him to just say will he just left and there's nothing he can do. I may not work in restaurants but I've been to enough to know there is a way to cancel an order and redo one. That would have taken about 30 seconds at most. He was unwilling to help customers, unwilling to get the manager. I asked for him to give his manager a call and he coldly just said he doesn't have it. Again, I've worked enough to know that you always have a supervisor on deal should anything happens. I even offered a compromised, the 2 sandwiches combine is about $32, with the current 20% discount it would be about $6 off. I asked if he is willing to give a scoop of gelato ($6 on the menu) so there is no refunds what so ever and it would show good faith customer service for future returning of purchases and word of mouth. Again he just said no, he will give 20% discount on the scoop and nothing else. I ended up ordering a sandwich, while it was decent in size, it was not that great either, the bread could be warmed or toasted to give better texture. I made a promise to my self. As soon as I return to the office building I work in. I will tell every coworker I see that limoncello isn't friendly and food is ok at best and absolutely not worth it. I love sandwiches and in my weekly rotation are Turner's Kitchen, Rhea's, Salty's, Deliboard, Outta Sight, Ted's and Wrap & Roll. I got the Mafioso for my first Limoncello sandwich and it was terrific! Good size, on good bread and the flavors mixed well and it was filling but not overly large. I was excited to see that businesses around the Civic Center were offering these promotions. Customer service is part of my daily job. So when I experience bad customer service I am taken aback. So to give detail of the situation. I approached the counter to place my order the cashier blankly stared at me without greeting nor asked if I I would like to place an order. So I greeted him and said hello I would like to place an order for a couple sandwiches. He took my order. But he didn't confirm my order or said my total cost. I asked if they took apple pay for payment and he nodded his head. I realized that I forgot to show my badge after the transaction was completed. So I asked if he can apply the discount, but he didn't answer and just shrugged his shoulders. The experience left a terrible taste in my mouth.
