The two chefs running the party were awesome--funny, super interactive with the kids, and on top of every detail. They handled things I didn't even realize I didn't have to do--like setting up the goodie bags, cutting and serving the cake, packing leftovers--which meant I actually got to relax and enjoy the party. The kids had a blast making their own pizzas and decorating cupcakes, and the fact that the place comes already decorated with birthday banners and permanent balloons made it even easier. Plus, being able to bring in our own food and drinks (including alcohol!) for the adults was a huge bonus. Everyone kept commenting on what a fun and unique party it was. If you're planning to do goodie bags, I recommend ordering aprons on Amazon instead of buying them from the venue--it's cheaper and makes for a cute party favor. Also, I suggest putting a balloon on the directional signs in the shopping center by Dunkin' Donuts so your guests don't get lost, since it's a bit tricky to get there. My kids love this place. They do 3 hr per day camps in the summer, M-F. We did the baking ones, so the kids made bread and cookies. They came out really well, and my kids came back stuffed from basically eating for 3 hrs. Kids said the older kids level was better for them; at that time they were aged 8,9, and 13. I'm comparing price, customer service, logistics, communication, and professionalism to the kids cooking classes we've attended at Sur La Table in Costa Mesa. PRICE: Lil Chef for today's Parent's Night Out is $192 for 3 kids ($62 per kid) with the sibling discount. We picked this place because our 4-year-old could finally cook with her older siblings that are 7 and 9. They were placed in a group of 7 kids, so my kids didn't get to participate in some of the steps since the group was so large. Sur La Table starts at $69 but you have to be 7 or older to participate, and you're only grouped in clusters of 3 or 4 people max. Instead of fresh ingredients, the kids were provided with frozen items and they were given plastic utensils to cut them, instead of being taught any knife skills or how to cook over an open flame. For a few extra dollars more, your kids could learn essential cooking skills, and fundamental knife handling at Sur La Table - as long as your kids are 7 or older. Customer Service & Logistics: Since it's our first time, we came in at 5:15 to sign any necessary paperwork, sign them in, fill out a name tag, help the kids familiarize where the bathrooms were, etc. Hannah told us to wait outside because she needed more time to set up and that she'd open the doors at 5:30. We're standing around while other people are walking right in. Maybe those kids paid extra for early drop off at 5pm, but it's literally 5:20 already. By 5:30 she still hadn't opened the doors, so we just walked in. I expected her to check my confirmation email or sign in to verify we're present, but she didn't. She didn't even introduce herself or the other cook until I asked. There were 14 kids and 2 teenagers / young adults trying to manage them all. My two older kids said the entire event was "CHAOTIC". Berry smoothies were frozen which I can understand, but the kids didn't even get to work with the blender. When I went to pick them up, I asked if I needed to sign them out, how the event went, but Hannah didn't give me any feedback. Communication: The website AND confirmation email I received said they'd be making FROM SCRATCH "Eggs in A Basket (egg inside a hollowed piece of toast), IHOP cheesecake pancakes, and very berry smoothies". Instead, they made toasted french fries with sprinkled cheese on top. I asked if they peeled fresh potatoes and cut them and my kids said no, they were previously frozen. What happened to the Eggs in A Basket? Fine, you'll substitute but can you at least please pick something where the cooking technique is similar to what they should be learning? I asked about the pancakes and my kid said she accidentally put ham in the pancake batter but Hannah said it was fine to eat. What if I was Jewish or Muslim or any religion that doesn't eat pork? Why wasn't it communicated that would be on the menu? And who serves cheesecake pancakes with ham bits mixed in? Why didn't Hannah just throw it out and start a new batch? Luckily my kids eat pork, but they said their cheesecake pancakes tasted weird. Professionalism: On the drive home my 4-year-old would repeat "What the hell?!" I asked her where she learned it from and she said from Hannah's brother, the other teenager / young adult that facilitated the event. Apparently, Hannah and her brother were play fighting a lot to the point where the kids were learning to chant at them "FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!" Boys were hitting girls, and there was a young boy with rainbow hair that took off his shoe during the class to hit a girl on the arm with it. He put back on his shoe and continued touching all the utensils without washing his hands. I'm giving Lil Chef 1 star because my kids said they'd want to come back just so they can play "hide and seek" again. That was their favorite part of the class - the free time. This place is NOT a Chef School, it's a babysitting facility. For a few extra dollars more, seriously go to Sur La Table if you want them to actually learn anything cooking-related in a professional environment. read more

Long overdue review since we celebrated my daughter's 7th birthday here back in January. Tracey was easy to communicate with via email, and setup was a breeze. They do make it easy for you to host a party here in that sense. Even though they have the space here to host a larger party, I don't recommend it. We had 16 guests total, and the party would have worked better with a smaller group (I'd say less than 10 would be ideal). We chose the cupcake baking party because it was better suited for the age ranges in my daughter's party (6 and up, but doable for 4-5 year olds with some parental guidance). However, it took about 30 minutes to even get going with the "mixing" portion of the class. The first 30 minutes consisted of the chefs introducing themselves, asking the kids questions, giving them instructions, and hyping them up for the class. The kids also got a chef's hat that they were able to personalize and decorate. Once the mixing/baking portion started... the mixing of ingredients was really just one large bowl being passed from kid to kid instead of each child getting their own with their own sets of ingredients to mix. I could tell some of the kids were getting restless and bored during this time while they were waiting their turn, and their turn was a little lame with just the stirring of a spatula or dumping in some flour. I didn't think this "class" was really teaching them anything. In the interest of time, they had already pre-made cupcakes that were ready and cooled. This part was where the kids really got to make their own individual creations because they each did get their own giant-sized cupcake to pipe and decorate to their hearts desires. They also automatically tack on a 13% gratuity charge to your party total, which I wasn't aware of beforehand. Not a fan of surprises like this and hidden, un-disclosed fees. Oh my gosh such a great place for birthday parties!I had my five year old daughter's birthday party here for a pizza and cupcake decorating add on and was such an easy experience for me as a mom. All I had to do was entertain the parents and watch my daughter and her 20 classmates have fun. We were even allowed to bring in our own booze which was a total hit! We are so in love with these classes and Chef Piper has such a great vibe and connection with the children. My 2 kids started coming years ago for the summer camps, and last year, we also tried the weekly classes for 12 weeks. The staff is caring, attentive, and encouraging. My kids have gained a lot of confidence in the kitchen and will regularly cook meals at home, even making pasta from scratch. The kids work in teams (based on age or skill level), so while each kid may not have their own mixing bowl/ingredients, the kids do learn how to cook well with others. I saw that some reviewers marked Lil Chefs down for this, but I appreciate my kids being able to work as a team. This not only helps my kids unite in the kitchen when preparing meals for the family, but also gives them an opportunity to learn what good team leadership looks like. Recently, my 9 year old competed in a Scouts cooking competition. She needed to place members into teams, delegate tasks to teams, then teach individuals how to do their roles. She took on the harder jobs, while tasting and oversreing each ingredient. All of the cooking was done outdoors, and parents were not allowed to assist. She confidently executed the meal, plating up a delicious garlic noodles with sauteed shrimp and bok choy, and took 2nd place in the competition. Other parents were shocked and amazed at her cooking and leadership skills. Part of the reason why she did so well was due to the technical skills she has learned from Lil Chef's, as well as the team leadership she has observed week after week in class. Additionally, Lil Chef's has fostered a love and passion for cooking in both of my children. My 9 and 11 year olds were recently recognized by our school district with an award given to 12 students (out of 11,000 studebts). The nominator noted the way they have been growing ingredients at home, and cooking for the family and the community. Just last week they baked two pies to gift to others: a greiving widow, as well a peer's birthday. We were told both pies were absolutely delicious. Fostering a love of cooking is just as important as learning technical skills. They will need to cook at least 3 meals a day for the rest of their lives so they mught as well learn to enjoy it. The facilities are clean and my kids have learned good kitchen sanitation skills. I like how they stress the importance of clean hands, and how they have the kids clean up together at the end when they're done. In my home we have a saying, "make a mess...clean the mess". I like that Lil Chef's is consistent with this. If there is one thing I'd like to see more of, it's cooking with whole foods like vegetables, fish, and chicken in the weekly classes. I want the kids to develop the habit of regularly cooking more heart healthy, nutritious whole foods. I'd love to see more roasting, more vegetables, and Mediterranean style cooking, and less desserts. That said, we will definitely be back in 2024 for more classes. We have reached out to the owner Tracy by email and phone to discuss our issues but ever since paying in full for the party, she hasn't returned any of our communications. ***This review is strictly related to hosting Birthday Parties at Lil'Chef.*** We recently had our child's birthday party at this place and although we've been students before for camps and classes (both which we've enjoyed), the party experience left a lot to be desired. We chose the Pasta-licious party package for 8+ year olds at a rate of $525. We also added the decorate cupcake option for $5/child. The majority of our guests were 10 year olds with a sprinkling of 8 year olds. From the children waiting their turn to stir one bowl of flour, to only being able to cut two ingredients for a marinara sauce that was advertised as a 16 ingredient fresh sauce, the children were left feeling bored and disappointed. At 10 years old they are fully aware that if they aren't at the stove stirring the contents of the sauce or the breadstick dough arrives already made, they aren't really the ones "cooking". There was very little for the children to do during the 2 hrs we were there. Also, the cupcakes ($5/each) were in such rough shape that the children rightfully asked "why are they burnt" and "is this under cooked?". They were only offered a very limited amount of icing, and a tiny sprinkling of sprinkles to use. It was as if the sprinkles were being rationed due to the war or something. Very strange. **DO NOT RECOMMEND CUPCAKE ADD ON** There was no water or juice offered for the kids when they were sampling their overcooked pasta and undercooked breadsticks. The parents of my guests had to drag in our cooler to serve our kids beverages. We're not sure what went wrong this weekend. We like Tracy (owner) and have been here for classes in the past. I adore Lil' Chef School. I always sign my son up for their summer camps and mini camps during thanksgiving or Christmas. He always had so much fun and won't stop sharing what he learned from the class on our way home. They gave out recipes at the end of the day and they are very professional. I also want to mention that my son is a picky eater(he usually won't eat cheese or meat), but he would eat everything he made at Lil Chef and told me how delicious they were. I'm not sure what kind of magic they do here, but I know Tracey and the chefs here are super friendly and caring that my son always look forward to going. My kid had a birthday party at Lil' Chef School. I was hesitant to have a birthday here because of the not so positive reviews about this place. The pictures showed that decor was cheap, and it was actually. But, I have decided to go ahead because I couldn't find other cooking schools that offer birthday parties in Irvine. Overall, we were very disappointed with this place. Whenever I called this place to speak with the owner about the birthday party plans, she didn't sound too friendly nor accommodating and hurriedly hang up the phone. She said that spots were filling up and I needed to reserve the party soon. I had a feeling that she seemed most interested in selling her "product" but didn't seem interested in making my daughter party work well. I understand that she may have been busy but I expected her to pay more attention to us because we were spending hundreds of dollars and it was a special day for my kid. On the birthday, there were two staff who led the party. We (other parents and I) expected the staff to be enthusiastic and entertaining for kids and to make the party fun and engaging because it's usually the case for kid's birthday parties like "Pump It Up" or "My Gym." But unfortunately both of the staff seemed act like novices and boring. The party was slow, boring, and quiet. There was no excitement at all. I realized the night before camp that I booked my girls for the wrong week. I brought them the next morning anyways to see what our options were. The owner was wonderful! She was able to fit them in that morning and was so kind and gracious about the whole thing, even though it was my mistake. I learned about Lil Chef School at my son's elementary school. Lil Chef School offers an incredible after school program geared toward teaching kids to cook and experiment with a variety of fun foods and vegetables. My kindergartner continually wants to enroll in Lil Chef School's programs. Each 6 to 8 week session offers different menus and they send their students home with their deliciously fresh menu item as well as an easy to follow recipe. We've made several of these at home and my son "talks the talk" of a lil chef! He sounds like a Jr Bobby Flay. It's awesome! It was through these after school classes that I explored Lil Chef School's Irvine campus and discovered their AMAZING cooking seminars and camps for kids. My 13 year old daughter and 6 year old son equally enjoy attending these seminars and camps. They've made everything from fresh chicken noodle soup (where they even made fresh noodles for the soup). They've made Sushi (3 different kinds!), they've done an appetizer session featuring Super Bowl appetizers, did a super fun cake pop session where they made 4 or 5 different types of cake pops. We celebrated my daughter's 7th birthday party at Lil Chef School. Chef Piper was extremely funny and entertaining during the 2 hour event. She had all the kids laughing and participating (ages 4-8), even the parents were giggling. Chef Piper and Chef Dominique also went above and beyond by helping us decorate the room prior to the party, getting balloons ready, hanging decorations and welcoming all the guests as they arrived. I stayed for the whole class and was very disappointed. Pros: The place is clean and the 1 instructor tries to be funny with the kids. Cons: The kids take turn in sifting flour and pinching salt into the mix; so the kids do not get their own bowl and dough, etc. Instructor went over rules of washing hands after touching hair, face, etc but doesn't always enforce it; he himself sneezed without covering up; didn't wash after; and touched foods; although he did enforce that rule once with the kids. Instructor would tell the kids to mind their own business and stop talking (a positive and negative depending if you prefer disciplining; I didn't like the shortness and tone when telling the kids to stop talking) Kids were so bored they were trying to entertain themselves with asking silly questions to one another; Instructor did 90% of the work and didn't seem enthusiastic about being there. I signed up for the pasta cooking night for my family. The 2 instructors were very nice and had fun personalities. This class is a good introduction to pasta making with kiddos to measure wet and dry ingredients, and knife skills. However, I think the price of over $50/pp was high for what we experienced. We made handmade pasta and chopped onions/garlic for the marinara Sauce. The rest of the marinara sauce was cooked by the instructors. Maybe have each table cook their own pasta and marina sauce over a portable stand or at the stove, better breadstick recipe, and BYOB for the parents! The pasta was overcooked and soggy. However, we know this is an intro class for kids. Note that it is carbs, no protein in the recipes made. Not a bad class, could be better with the suggestions above and with time flow. Located in the back of the lot, it's a bit hard to find, but there is parking right outside if you drive around the back of the building. What a fun place to experiment with cooking! My co-workers and I took a few teenage girls here for a summer outing and we had a great time. Chef Piper was a joy and her energy and great attitude was contagious. We broke up into 2 teams for a friendly cooking competition using a dumpling recipe. The directions were that you could create anything you wanted using the ingredients, so it was a lot of fun to see everyone get creative. The reason I am giving them 3 stars is because I think for what it is, our experience wasn't so much a learning experience as it was just exposure in a kitchen. The format wasn't to teach new skills and relied heavily on students asking for help. Maybe because there were a few adults in the class, the chef didn't think it was necessary, but I know a few of the younger girls probably could have benefited from more direction. The price was steep for what it was. Otherwise, I can see how multiple sessions could be fun and useful. Horrible.. I would not waste your money.. I am very surprised parents just drop off their kids... I guess 2 hours to yourself might sound amazing.. But if you actually stayed to see what you are paying for you would think twice.. Sadly this place wasn't anything we expected. We did the recent Candy Cane Cookie one. After spending as much as we did for this class for our kids they each made ONE COOKIE . Ridiculous! Not to mention the GROSS hot coco they made... These ladies talk about cleaning hands etc after each thing, but NOPE the kids in the class were licking fingers ( which is expected) but I mean you had kids putting their fingers in bowls etc. Not to mention when you think of a cooking class you picture your child having their own bowl and ingredients. I kid you not each kid was able to put a CUP of flour into a bowl! That's it! One person was allowed to turn on the oven. Seriously this place is a joke. Very disappointed. My daughter and her friends (total of 6 kids) attended the cooking class today (Fruit juice fizz with sugar cookies). The description of the class said "holiday cutouts to decorate". All throughout the class different kids were asking if they'd be able to decorate the cookies. The teacher said no they were just making them today. My friends and I thought they'd be able to decorate but we stupidly didn't check until after we left so we read and saw the class clearly said they would be allowed to decorate (refer to picture posted). If not then why would me and my friends sign up for a class just to make fizz and 2 plain cookies. The kids were disappointed and so were we! read more

Great cooking school for kids. The chef instructors were very nice and informative. They teach the kids step by step instructions.

My kids have come here for a couple birthday parties. They had a great time and the staff were super good at entertaining the kids and making the birthday kid feel special. The parents can feel safe dropping their kids off and getting a little break and "me" time. The host does not have to help the kids with any of the cooking as it's well planned and run by the staff there. They can just stand aside and enjoy watching the kids have a blast. It's definitely an easy and fun birthday party to throw. I think our next birthday party will be here!! read more

Super disappointed! I signed my girls up for the Kids Night Out class tonight (11/27/15). I paid additional monies to have them arrive at 5pm ($85 total). Nobody ever showed up. There were 4 other parents waiting as well. We waited for 1 hour after calling and emailing repeatedly, without any response. This is very unprofessional. My kids have been waiting for this class for weeks. They were heartbroken. Update 12/19/15: my girls finally got a chance to attend a class this morning. They had a wonderful time and Tracy was super apologetic about what happened a few weeks ago. My daughters will be attending more classes very soon. read more
