This is a really nice cafe but, in my book, not a "real cafe". I was a fan of the old Good Cup but it really needed an up-do....and it really got one! For one, it is no longer the Good Cup ( but they do have some of the same great baristas). It is now all white walls and seats, and that spare, open, new look that is so...well, contrived to the point of boring. What I do love here now is the natural curved wood communal table in the center space, their loose leaf tea, local pastries, and super nice baristas. If you want a good espresso drink, go somewhere else. I'm not sure how a place can start with such good beans, and have a finished product that sucks so bad. I ordered 2 oatmilk cappuccinos. They were terrible. I think the girls making the coffee were too interested in socializing to pay attention to what they were making. The milk was burned. The espresso was blah. How do you fuck up Handlebar coffee?? But they did. I want my money back damn it. But I got them to go and by the time I drank them it was too late. My friend and I came here to study because we heard great things about it but I'm not really sure why. I never write reviews but I felt strongly about this one lol. We both ordered matcha lattes and after taking the first sip we were shocked. They were so powdery, grainy, and didn't even taste like matcha. We went back to ask to have our drinks remade and the guy we talked to was super nice and more than willing. Unfortunately, once we got the remade drinks they were still incredibly grainy, especially the one with soy milk, and they somehow tasted even less of matcha?? It just tasted like warmed up milk? The one star was for the nice service but honestly their drinks are just way overpriced and not even worth it. If you are going to have matcha on your menu, maybe learn how to properly prepare it so it doesn't come out grainy and flavorless. Can't speak on the coffees they have on their menu but the matcha was enough for us to decide to never come back. read more

Best. coffee. ever. IF I could give this 7/5 stars I would. This place was so adorably cute and the design of the coffee house resembled the name of the place so it definitely gave that "homey feel". I tend to like to do my work at coffee shops and the only negative side is that others seem to also enjoy this place as well, making it hard to find a table with enough room. The place was not too loud, but also allowed people to talk freely to one another without disturbing others. Now onto the most important thing, the coffee was AMAZING. I got the dirty chai (which I 100% recommend), and I still think about how good it was and have cravings for it. I even got my friends hooked onto it so maybe that proves how good it is. This place has some great coffee if/when they get your order correct. Three days in a row they managed to get my drink wrong. Today I asked them to remake it and the barista said "they probably weren't paying attention when I ordered!" Literally their only responsibility is to listen and they can even do that. I am not sure if they have trouble understanding my order when I'm wearing a mask but three days in a row is kind of a red flag hence why I am even taking the time to write this damn review. Now I usually get the dump drink I like from Starbucks a caramel macchiato. However any chance I get to actually have good roasted beans is appreciated and I'd like to not go to Starbucks. Yet I walk in ask for a caramel macchiato and wait almost 2 minutes and boom there's my "macchiato" it came to me cold, no caramel, tasting like luke warm bean juice. nothing could fix it. I paid 4.75 and I tipped. I will sound petty but I wish I did not tip or ever try to swill. There were two baristas back there who were giggling and making fun of his name saying I don't know how to pronounce this and laughing at how it should be pronounced very loudly in front of his face. I've loved every version of this place. I even worked here summer before college so I've been going to this place since it was Mesa Coffee and I can't remember what else. It's a small coffee shop and it's nice to support local. But it's turned into a mess. The male barista is rude and incredibly slow. He can't be bothered. No one needs the constant muttered comments. You're in the service industry. Maybe go work in insurance claims denial or something to better suit you. No one is particularly friendly anymore. They don't want to be there? I'm trying to think of a less friendly coffee shop or restaurant and I just can't. It takes 30 min to get a kids hot chocolate even without the morning rush. The place actually puts me in a bad mood after I leave, which is too bad because coffee should be mood lifting. 5 stars for staff, coffee, and clean, new, fresh environment. The thing I've been having trouble with though, is that with SBCC nearby, sometimes 3/4 of the place is filled with students who camp out for hours, taking individual tables even when they are all together (3 friends = 3 tables) and at least half of them don't even purchase anything from the coffee shop. Tough one for the owners... I wouldn't enjoy being the coffee police if it were my place. But I have walked into Lighthouse several times recently and walked right back out again because there is nowhere to sit, with half the place occupied by people with no purchases in front of them. I hopeful they'll figure out a way to discourage non-purchasing squatters so that paying customers can continue to enjoy going there. read more

i love lighthouse!! as a ucsb student, it's a bit out of the way (taking bus to downtown and then to lighthouse/sbcc area) but super worth the trip!! the drinks are very affordable compared to other cafes i go to in the area, there's charging outlets and kind workers, and they even gave out their delicious-looking baked goods for 50% off before closing. i do wish that they did the latte art for our drinks, but they were SO yum with a sweet vanilla aroma, it was honestly fine!! will definitely be back!! read more
